Thegoldenadorned sanctuarypresentedascene oflovelinessforthecelebrationofthejubileeMass ofthanksgivingduringwhichthePapalBlessing wasreceivedbythejubilarians.DomMoreno'stwopartMasswasrenderedby thenuns'choir.

Intheunadoivableabsence ofHisGracetheArchbishop (whosentcongratulatory messages)theRev.J. Murphywasthecelebrant. Inthesanctuarywithhim wereRev.FatherWilliams, S.J.,theRev.M.McKeon andRev.P.Casey.TheoccasionalsermonwaspreachedbytheRev.G.O'CallaghanP.P.,EastFremantle, whotookforhistext:"The Masterhascomeandcallethforthee."

Inauniqueexpositionof thelifeworkofanun, FatherO'Callaghanlikened thegrowthofplantlifeto theplanting,germinating andgrowthofvirtuessown byanuninthereceptive soulsofthosechildrencommittedtohercare.Hewent ontosaythateverypriest knowsonlytoowellthat hesimplyputsouthishand andgathersthefruitproducedbythespiritualsap ofprayerandself-sacrifice ofanun'slife.

Hemuchappreciated beinginvitedtospeakon thatimportantoccasionfor asafriendoflongstanding,itgavehimanopportunitytoexpresshisadmirationnotonlyfortheeducationalservicesrendered bythecommunitybutalso forthenamegenerallywon inextendingawarmwelcomeandageneroushospitality,inparticulartothose youngpriestsjustleaving theshelteringcareofhome, landorseminary.

TheRev.ThomasO'Connor,C.Ss.R., passedawayatWellington,N.Z.,onJan. 16.HewasthedoyenRedemptoristpriest oftheAustralasianProvince,being85 yearsoldandinthe60thyearofhispriesthood.

BorninWexford,Father O'Connorwasoneofa largeanddistinguished family.OnebrotherbecameLordChiefJusticeof IrelandundertheFree State.Anotherbrother,who surviveshim,Captain O'Connor,wasinchargeof theEucharisticbargefrom ManlytoCircularQuayin theSydneyCongressof 1928.AnephewisFather D.O'Connor,S.J.,editorof the"MessengeroftheSacredHeart."

FatherO'Connorwasan alumusofMaynoothduring thepresidencyofHisGrace ArchbishopMannix.After hisordinationhewasfor 10yearsbursaratSt. Peter'sCollege,Wexford. Whilstworkinginthe dioceseofFernshefoundedtheConfraternityofthe HolyFamilyatEnniscorthy whereitcontinuestoflourishafter50years.Hewas keenlyinterestedinsport, anddidmuchtopopularise rugbyinIrelandinthose pre-waryears.

After16fruitfulyearsas adiocesanpriestinFerns,

heappliedtobereceived intotheRedemptoristCongregationandwasprofessed in1912.Withtheoutbreak oftheGreatWarhewas sentasachaplainwithIrish troopstoFrance,andduringfourstrenuousyears wontheheartsofofficers andmenbyhiscourageand zeal.

Whenthewarendedhe wasassignedtotheIrish vice-provinceofhisOrder inthePhilippineIslands, whereheremainedtillhe cametoAustraliain1925. Hisfirsthomeherewasat NorthPerthMonastery,and helabouredinmanyparts ofWestAustraliagiving missionsandretreats. Hewasattachedtoother Australianhousesbefore beingtransferredtoMt.St. Gerard's,Wellington,N.Z. Ill-health,andoftendangerofdeath,doggedhim foryears,butsickness neverdampenedhisspirit. Thegreatmassoftheworkingpeopleinthis countryhavetheirweeklyincomedecidedforthem bytheArbitrationCourts.Initsoriginalconception,thebasicwagewasanattempttoassessthe minimumneedsofaman.wifeandtwochildren. Inquiterecenttimes,however,theCourtshave retrogressedintothepolicyofpayingwhatparticularindustries,orthenationaleconomyasa wholecouldafford.

Thistemerariousattemptismadewithoutadequatestatisticaloreconomicknowledge.Butmost seriouslyItismadebymenwhosepracticalacquaintancewiththetypeofworkinvolvedandthefamily necessitiesoftheworkingmanmust,atbest,be fragmentary.Whenthegovernmentincreasesthe salariesofthesejudges,itwidensagapwhich alreadyyawnsandplacesthearbitratorsofworkingclasslifeatanevenmoreremotedistancefromthe objectsoftheirjudgment.

PLEAFORORDERINSOCIALJUSTICE

Inthenatureofthingsaworkingman'sneeds arenotalleconomic.Thereareeducational,cultural,relaxativerequirementsaswell.Buttoday theseareofnoaccount.Butevenonthegross economicalplane,theremustbeaccountofthese thingsbecausetheyallcostmoney.Butitisone thingtohaveacold,objective,intellectualknowledgeofsuch"needs"andtheircostandquite anothertohaveawarm,practical,humanunderstandingofhowtheydopropupandenterintohis familylife.Butitwouldseemthatfinancialconsiderationsalonebindtheoutlookofbothworker andjudge.

Idonotknowwhattestsareappliedinthis matterofgivingmoretohimwhoalreadyhath. ButIdonotforonemomentbelievethatthe capacityoftaxpayerstopayistakenintoaccount except,perhapswithwithacalloushumour.On thegroundsof"needs"Idonotthinkthat,onprevioussalaryscales,theirWorshipshavesuffered anyrealhardshipsthroughthelossofvaluein money. Inthematterofcharitytheologiansdistinguish an"order,"wherebythevirtueinitspractical effectsisappliedingraduatedfashionfirstlytothose whohavethegreaterclaims,andthentothose whohavelesserclaimsornone.Soitseemstome thatthereshouldbesome"ordering"inthedispensationofsocialjusticesothatthe"have-nots"take precedenceoverthe"haves"inorderthatthegreat disparitiesbetweenthetwoclassesshouldbe lessenedappreciably.Suchaprocedure,endorsed alikebyreason,justiceandcharity,wouldrubdown theroughedgesoftheclasswar.

PENSIONERSHAVEPRIORCLAIMS

Inanycasesomereasonshouldbeshownby governmentforthehugeincreasesinsalarytothose alreadyreceivingadequateremuneration.Couldit honestlybecontendedthatjudges,seniorcivilservantsorarmyofficershavebeenlanguishingina noblesilenceinfinancialstringency?Ratherit wouldseem,theythinkbecauseworkerswhohover withinafewpoundsofthebasicwagereceive increasestheyshouldautomaticallygetpreferment also.Thatisillogicalbecausetheiroriginalsalaries weresetarbitrarilywithoutreferenceeithertotheir "needs"ortothecountry'sfinancialcapacities.

Meanwhilethatgreatandgrowingsectionofthe community-pensionersandothersonfixedincome-reallydofellthepinch.Itseemstome elementarythat,ifthegovernmenthasfundswith whichtobeprodigal,thesepeopleshouldbethe firsttobenefit.Sincenaturalaffectionscountfor solittletodaythatmanyelderlypeoplearevirtually abandonedbytheirchildrenandthrownbackon theStateforsupport,theStateshouldshoulder itsresponsibilities.Evenifahandfulofjudges havetobattlealongbravelyon£5,000ayearfora furthersmallperioditwouldbeworthittoimprove thescandalouspositionofthepensioners.

Historyisintheprocessofpointinganironical moralaboutthemaintenanceofanimperialsystem baseduponslavery.Aftertheinaugurationofthe SovietStateinRussiatheclassicwayofdealing withopponents,realorimaginary,wasbywayof "liquidation."Astimeadvanced,however,thenew ProgressiveState,havingcutthepainterfromthe traditionalvaluesuponwhichWesterncivilisation rested,gotfullstrideintoreactionandreactivated theancientinstitutionofslavery.

TheordinarySovietcitizen,havingnorights inherentinhisnaturebutonlythosewhichthe new'imperialistsoftheKremlinchosetoconfer uponhim,wasineffectaslave.Thespecialclassof slaves,enemiesoftheState,whogrewtonumber 14,000,000inhundredsofforcedlabourcamps differedfromtheSovietcitizenonlyinthedegree ofservility.

RUININGEUROPEATANYCOST

TheSoviet,ofcourse,attemptedtoconcealfrom theworldatlargethatsuchagrotesquelyreactionarystateofaffairsexistedintheWorkers'Paradise. Butthethingwasasighttoolargetoremaina secretandcertainlysincethepastwarnations becamepainfullyawarethatthousandsoftheir soldierswerebeingheldunwarrantedlybythe Soviet.

Thediscoveryanddevelopmentofatomicpower inthepastfewyearshas,despiteSovietvauntsof equality,ifnotofsuperiority,driventheKremlin ontothedefensive.Nomorestrikingproofofthis isavailablethanthefrenziedeffortsofMoscowto preventtheunificationofEuropeandthere-arming ofGermany.TheSovietisseeminglypreparedto wreckEuropeanintegrationatanycostwhatever.

Withoutchangingoneiotaofherbasicprinciples, Russiaisintentuponenlargingliberty.Sheseeks tocurryfavourwithherchiefenemy,theCatholic Church,byreleasingafewofthethousandpriests fromherslavecamps.Sheseekspoliticaladvantage bytheholdingofahandfulofAmericanhostages.

Butintheveryprocessofliberalisationshehas cookedherowngoose.Forthefreeingofsome slavesgivesthelietotheSovietdenialofher maintenanceofslavelabourcampsonagigantic scale.And,ofcourse,theslaveswilltalk.Every freedmancantellofathousandstilllanguishing inthosehell-holesinSiberiaandahundredother places.Moreover,hecantellofinhumanityand crueltywhichmaketheNazisseemtheveriesttyros inthescienceofsadism.

TESTFORTHE"PARLOURPINKS"

Thereisgrimironyinthereflectionthatwhen theSovietattemptstobekinditonlysucceedsin leavinganimpressionofitsabominablecruelty. Itwarnsthefreeworldinthemostvividfashionof whatCommunistdominancewillmeanforfreemen. ItillumineswithablindinglightwhattheSoviet talkof"people'sdemocracies,"freedomandpeaceis worth.

Never,inthenear-40yearsofitsexistencehas theSovietmadesuchanexposureofitsrealnature andmethods.TherevelationswillnotaffectCommunists,fortheyarecase-hardened.Butitshould haveaprofoundimpactuponthesillyintellectuals whoaffectsanarchismasafad.Thecontinuing disclosureswillproveatestcaseofthesincerityof the"parlourPinks."

TroublesomeTimes

TheReliionsOrderknownastheUrsu-andmoreSisterswere soughtfromItaly.Thecall wasquicklyansweredand eightmissionariesarrived byairtoworkinthemissionfield.

linesoftheSacredHeartwasinstitutedin 1575throughthegoodofficesoftheJesuit FatherswhogavetheFoundress,Vittoria Masie,thesamerulesasthoseofSt.IgnatuisfortheChristianeducationofyoung girlsandwomen.

Wonderfulresultswere achievedrightfromthe start,andnewhouseswere openedinthemaincitiesof Italy.Afterthreecenturies someoftheruleswere changedinkeepingwiththe times.

TheactivitiesoftheUrsulineSistersnowincluded therunningofkindergartens,primaryandsecondary schools,schoolsofneedleworkanddomesticscience

hadtheirshareofhardship, privationandmartyrdom.

MotherLucreziawasindeedagreatsoul,butby comparisonwithallher achievementsherownprofoundhumilitywasoutstanding.Herlastwords were:"Itismyferventdesirethattheeducationof theyoungshouldflourish."

However,theirworkwas nottolast.Chinawaseve!runbytheCommunistsand Sistersandchildrenwere dispersed.Theschoolwas closedandtheSisterswere notallowedtocarryonthe worktowhichtheyhad givenuptheirlives.

Stilltheirdetermination wastostayinChinauntil theywereputout,andduringthedarkanddifficult daysthatlayahead,thebehaviouroftheSistersand theCatholicsaroundthem wasexemplary.

In1953theSistersstartedanapostolateofwork amongItaliansinWest Perth,andtwooftheSisters areattheSt.Josephs orphanage,Subiaco,learningEnglish.

TheAgradeinterclub competitionwasnotheld duetotheStatetrialsand interestfocussedonthe13 gradecompetition.Inthis grade,Y.C.W.holdsthelead bysome60pointsbutthe teamhassufferedtheloss ofpointsfortwoweeksdue toathletesbeingawayon holidays.

Easilythemostoutstandingperformanceinthe gradewasbythe16-yea:oldHerbElliott,whoran the880yardsingustyconditionsinlmin.57.2sec.It wasElliott'sfirstclashwith University'sDonDyerwho finishedinsecondplace, some25yardsbehind Elliott. TheW.A.sub-junior recordbeforelastSaturday was2min.1.5sec.byTregenza,reducednowby4.3 sec.byElliott.Thisperformancebythe16-year-old

MurrayWarddidwell overthe220yardshurdles withafirst-uprunof28.9 sec.Whenitisconsidered thatMurrayhitthelast hurdlebadlyandslowed downpracticallytoawalk, hewouldbewelladvisedto concentrateonthisevent.
