Marchingsixabreastand ,arryingcandlesinshades ofvarious,colours,theprocessionwasanarresting sightfromtheRoyalPerth Hospital.Thecandlesflickeredinthedarknessofthe squarearoundtheCathedral Iike Pentecostal tongues.

Redcloakedflowergirls precededitcarryingdelicateposieswhichthey eventuallyplacedatOur Lady'sfeetintheCathedral.

12-MileMotorcadeToNewShrine

Onthedayafterhisappointmentas BishopofSunbury,theMostRev.L.J. Goodyattendedafunctioninhisnewdiocesewhichhedescribedasmagnificent.It wasthepublicclosingoftheMarianYear andtheblessinganddedicationofanew shrine.

Thefunctiontookplace Dardanupwherethe ChurchoftheImmaculate Conceptionwasdedicated underthattitlepriortothe denitionofthedogma.

Amotorcadetwomiles longandcomprising250 privatecarsmadethejourneyfromBunburytoDardanup.Ledbyahuge crucifixinadecorated utility,12beautifullydeckd floats,contributadbymostoftheparishes 7,ftheSouth-West,were thecentralfeatureofthe motorcade.

Everyparishofthe South-Westwasrepresentedatthefunction.TheoccasionwasinitiallyadistrictrallyofHolyName societymembers.

AgeneralCommunionof allparishionerstookplace andat11o'clockthemen fromalltheparishesbreakCastedinbuffetfashionat Dardanup.Mr.PaulBrenaangaveamagnificentadtress(tobepublishedin ,urnextissue).

HisLordship,Dr.Goody, andtheRt.Rev.Mgr.J. Wallacetravelledwiththe motorcadeofcarsandfloats whichreachedDardanupin three-quartersofanhour.

Therebetween2,000-3,000 peopleassembledinfront ofthenewshrineoutside thechurch.BishopGoody dedicated the shrine, preachedandimparted PontificalBenedictionof theBlessedSacrament.

HisLordshipsaidthatthe lastcenturyorsohadbeen outstandinglyMarian,with twoPapaldefinitionsand fourextraordinarymanifestationsapprovedbythe Church-theMiraculous Medalin1830,LaSalettein 1846,Lourdesin1858and Fatimain1917.

ItwasobviousthatDivine Providenceintendedthat weshouldpaymoreattentiontoandusemorethe intercessionoftheBlessed Virgin.Themessageof eachofthefourMarian apparitionshadbeenprayerandpenance.

Neverbeforeinthehistoryoftheparish ofPalmyrahastherebeenwitnessedascene ofsuchawe-inspiringsplendourasthat whichunfoldeditselfbeforethegazeofwell nigh2,000peopleonDec.5.

Itwastomarktheclos-Onewhoevervisited ingoftheMarianYear.Lourdesandwitnessedthe Beforethecurtainfellontorchlightprocessionsin thatyearofgracethepar-thegrottoofBernadette ishionersofPalmyraandcouldnotbutimaginethat surroundingparishes(not-onceagainhewasbackin ableamongstthembeingRosarySquarejoiningwith BeaconsfieldandKensing-thethousandsofpilgrimsin ton)weredeterminedthatthathallowedspotnestling afittingceremonyshouldatthefootofthePyrenees. markthecloseofthat grace-ladenyear. Punctuallyat8o'clock behindtheirrespectivebannersmarchedthemembers ofthedifferentsodalities.

TheLourdesscenewas morevividlybroughtbefore one'seyeswhentheprocessionenteredthegrounds andbecauseofitsdimensionsitmovedinazig-zag formationupanddownthe schoolgrounds,eventually arrivingattheshrine.

Theprocessionpassed throughthestreetssurroundingthechurch grounds.Thesurrounding darknesswasilluminedbyHereaninspiringadthelightofmanyhundredsdresswasdeliveredbythe ofmulti-colouredtorches,Rev.T.W.Purcell,O.M.I. whilstthestillnesswasSolemnBenedictionandthe brokenbyhundredsofrecitationofthePope's voicespayingtributetotheMarianYearprayerbrought QueenofHeaven,astheytoafittingconclusiona recitedherRosaryandgreatyearofuntoldblesssangherbeautifulhymns.ingsfortheworldatlarge.

Itwaswithgreatsolemnityanddevotion andfaiththatOurLadywascrownedon Dec.5inSt.John'sChurchatToodyayfor thelasttimeduringtheMarianYear.

TheprocessionformedlastdayoftheMarianYear, outsidethechurch:crossbearerswithacolytes,ChildrenofMary,aspirants, HolyAngels,theRev.R. O'Reilly,fiveChildrenof MarycarryingOurLady's statue(onagoldandsilver biersurmountedwitha bowerofmaidenhairfern andcarnations).thelittle queenandattendants.

At3p.m.theprocession movedintothechurchto thestrainsof"Thisisthe ImageofOurQueen."As theroyalgroupsettledin thesanctuary,thequeenat thepropertimeduringthe singingofthecrowning hymnplacedacrownof creamrosesonthestatueof theQueenoftheMarian Year.

ThelargestgatheringofpeopleeverassembledinSt.Brigid'schurch,Midland Junction,filledittocapacitylastWednesdaynight,whenCatholicsfromallpartsof theparishgatheredtotakepartintheclosingceremoniesoftheMarianYear.

Owingtothefactthatso manyworkersleavehome atanearlyhourinthe morning,permissionwas grantedbytheArchbishop foraneveningMass,which wascelebratedat7.30p.m.

TheMasswasfollowedby acandle-lightprocessionin honourofOurLadyofthe ImmaculateConception.

Thewholecongregation tookpartintheprocession whichcircledtheentire groundsbeforere-entering thechurch.Eachmember tarriedalightedcandleand alljoinedinthesingingof hymnsinhonourofthe VirginMary.

ThestatueofOurLady, beautifullydecoratedwith dowersandilluminatedby

myriadsofcolouredlights wasbornealoftbyfourmen informaleveningdressand surroundedbyChildrenof Maryintheirblueand whiteregalia.

Precedingthestatuewere tinyflowergirlscarrying basketsofflowersand strewingtheroutewith rosepetals.

IncludedintheprocessionandledbytheirbannerbearerswerethemembersoftheSacredHeart sodality,theChildrenof MaryandtheHolyName society.

Theinspiringceremony wastheculminationofa triduuminhonourofOur LadyoftheImmaculate

Theparishpriestthen feelinglyaddressedacongregationofoverthree hundredonthedoctrineof theImmaculateConception stressingthegreatloveof OurBlessedLadyandour needtokeepinherfavour bythedailyfamilyRosary.

TheBlessedSacrament wasthenexposedandthe processionformedbehind thecross-bearertwodeep. TheBlessedSacramentwas carriedunderacanopyof whitesilkbyfourmenof theparish.ItwasimmediatelyprecededbythethurifersandtheimageofOur Lady.AsthesolemnprocessionmovedtotheconventgrasstheRosarywas recitedandinterspersed withappropriatehymns.

Itmovedthroughan avenueofcolouredflagsto anoutsidealtarwherethe adIarianYearprayerswere recitedandBenediction concludedtheafternoon.

MOTIVEMARKSTHEDIFFERENCE

Forthereareotherandlesserwaysoflosing oneselfwhichdonotreallytranscendthelimitsof thepersonalego,oranyway,ofone'sownkind. Foronemayfindsomethingbiggerandbetterthan self,butstillonthehumanandnaturalplane. Thereisnothinghereinwhichtoloseselfina radicalway,thoughonemaybeallthebetterfor gettingoutsideofselfevenwhenonecannotgel abovethenatureofthebeast.

Thisispreciselythelinewhichdividesoil numanitarianismfromsupernaturalcharity.The externalactinbothcasesmaybeidentical,butin thematterofmeritandinthedevelopmentof characterthereareworldsbetween.Foritisthe questionofmotivewhichmakesChristianityunique andsetsitapartfromnaturalreligionormere idealism.Inthefieldofbehaviouritdistinguishes itbasicallyfrommereconventionalformsbasedon goodorder,convenienceorthewelfareofsociety.

Ifthesettingdownofallthisseemsawindy process,itisatthesametimeanecessaryprelude inconsideringtheviewsexpressedrecentlybynonCatholicchurchmenonthequestionsofmarriage andadultery.Theyhavesaidinsubstancethat adulteryisnotanunforgivablesinandthatwhere itsoccurrenceisnothabitualthewrongedpartner inmarriageshouldbereadytoforgiveitandnot makeitthereasonofbreakingthemarriagebond. Formyself,Ifeelthatsuchopinionsaremorehighmindedthanpractical.

FAILUREOFNATURALISM

Whathasnotbeenmentionedinthesedisculsions isthatadulteryisasin.Foradultery,considered asabreachofconventionandofsocialetiquetteis vastlydifferentmatterfromadulteryconsidereda, agraveoffenceagainstthelawsofGod.Clearly therearetwoutterlydistinctpropositions,which nightcalltheChristianandthenaturalistviews ItisimmenselyregrettablethatChristianchurchmenappeartoconcentrateexclusivelyonthelatter.

TOPERVERSIONOFMINDS

ThosewhobelieveinreligioninRussiaorinthe satellitenationsbehindtheIronorBamboocurtains will,ofcourse,havenodelusionsforthey'have ,alreadyexperiencedthepsychologicalattackson faith.Butitissurelyofmajorsignificancethat, afterthreedecadesofindoctrinationingodless materialism,religionshouldnotonlyhavesurvived, butbeabletoreviveintheSoviet,particularly amongyoungpeople.

ItisallpartofthehorribleclarityofMarxist realismthat,havingusedeverythingofarepressive naturetostampoutreligiontheyhavecometo realisethatsuchmethodsboomerangbywayof intensifyingratherthanoferadicatingfaith.So fromthetortureofbodiestheyturnnaivelytothe perversionofminds.

Butthereisgreatperilinsuchanadventure.For thegreatheresiesofthepastsucceededbecausethey tooksomeelementofthetotaltruth,distortedthe parttillitgrewgreaterthanthewholeandpresenteditasasimplifiedversionoftheentiresystem. ButCommunismhastakethewholeandinverted itutterly.Itisthecosmicdenialandhencelacks thatairofplausibilitywhichtheretentionofeven smalfragmentsofreligioustruthmightlendit.

NOFREE,OBJECTIVEENQUIRY

Butthesoulofman,hydropticwithsacredthirst, cannotbesatisfiedwiththeersatzrefreshment Marxismhastooffer.Ithasnosubstituteonthe intellectual,emotionalormoralplanestomakefor theUniversalThingithastornoutbytheroots. Itismoreconcernedtoexplainawaythantoexplainandifleftonabasisofscientificenquirywould certainlyfailandfailquickly.

BishopLemairehasjust spent31monthsvisitinghis priestsinKorea,Japanand Formosa.Aged54,he labouredfor16yearsin Manchuria,wherehewas CoadjutorBishopofKirin whenhewasnamedsuperiorgeneralofhissocietyin 1946.

ItwasinOctober,1942. justasonaccountofhis failingsightFatherPace wasleavingforSt.Johnof GodHospitalandFather Caseytakingchargeofthe parish,thatanacreanda halfoflandwasbought fromMrs.Lee.

Thefirststepwasto raisethemoneytopayfor thisland.Thattookjust ontwoyears.Thenastart wasmadeonafundfor buildingachurch.With onlyahandfulofparishionersprogressinthoseearly yearswasnecessarilyslow. Bytheendof1945,£500 wasinhand.

Thesecondcollectionat MasseverySundayslowly butsurelykeptaddingup and,thankstoanoccasional entertainmentand(inrecentyears,especially)to thegardenfete£2,500was inhandwheninMaythis yearitwasthoughtsafeto goonwiththebuilding.

Eachmonthsincethen hasbroughtthechurch nearerandthisweekshould seeitcompletedandready fortheopeningat3o'clock nextSundaybyHisLordshipBishopGoodyofBunbury.

Wehadpicturedabuildingneatandstrong,but notelaborate,forfundsdid notpermitthat.However, Mr.Costelloandhismen havegivenusachurchfar beyondourrosiestexpectations.
