TheRev.W.Buckley, addressingtheyouth,said thattheyhaveaverylarge parttoplayinthesalvation oftheworld.Heinstanced theoccurrenceofghastly crimeorgiesinNewZealand,andsaidthatitwas unknowntohimifthesame sortofthingwashappen- inginWesternAustralia.

However,hesaid,itwas awonderfulthingtosee thatsomanygirlsandboys weremakinganeffortto bringChristintotheirown lives.Hewarnedthem thatitwasnecessaryfor themtorememberthatthey mustalsohelpothersto recogniseChrist.

TheCommunionbreakfast,whichfollowedthe Mass,wasattendedbythe Rev.J.Depiazzi,thediocesandirectorofCatholic Action,andthreemembers oftheexecutiveofthe N.C.G.M.,MissesColleran, CollopyandHickey.

Depiazzi,saying thatCatholicActionwas Catholiclife,tracedth.s growthofCatholicismin Australia.HepointedoutthatAustralia,bythedesignofProvidence,hadnot beencolonisedbythePortuguese,whofirstdiscoveredit,butbytheEnglish- andsobecameaProtestant countryinsteadofaCatholiccountry,asitwould havebeenhadthePortuguesesettledhere.

Thiswasthemessage broughtherebyMgr.GiuseppeSensi,officialobserveroftheHolySeetothe UnitedNationsEducational, ScientificandCulturalOrganisation(UNESCO),ata Massprecedingtheopeningoftheeighthgeneral conferenceofthespecialisedUNagency.

Theconference,thefirst heldbyUNESCOinSouth America,wasexpectedto dealmainlywiththeorganisation'sworksinceits lastgeneralget-together twoyearsago.Sessions werescheduledtolastfour weeks.

Recallingthephrasefrom theconstitutionofUNESCO thatwarsbegininthe mindsofmen,MonsignorSensiremindedthedelegatesthatpeaceisnotonly aworkofilluminingtheintelligence,butalsoofgood willinspiredbycharityand justice.Thismeansthat theheartmustbechanged, hesaid.

MonsignorSensideclared thatthepresenceofthe delegatesattheMassshowedtheyfelttheneed,not onlyofmakingintelligent useofscientificandtechnicalresources,butalsoof consideringwithintheir consciencesthemoraland spiritualaspectsoftheserioustaskbeforethemand ofimploringtheblessingof Heavenuponit."Beassured,"hetoldthem,"that yourpreoccupations'and yourprayersarealsoours."

Theultimatebasisofthe aimsofUNESCOandthe justificationofthevalueson whichitsactivitiesare based,MonsignorSensitold thedelegates,istobefound intheGospels,intheteachingsofChrist,Whoisthe PrinceofPeaceparexcel- lence.

TheChurch,whichreceivedthemissiontobringthis teachingtoallnations,he said,ispleasedwithallthat istrueandgoodandbeau-

tifulintheobjectivesand programmesoftheorganisation.

"Toreconcilemenone withanother,togivethem aneffectivesenseofthe unityofthehumanfamily, tobringharmonyamong themindsandheartsof men,"theobserverofthe HolySeecontinued,"formedoneofthefundamental aspectsofthemissionof Christ.Theotheraspectof thismissionwasandremainstoreconcilemenwith God.

DecadesOfStruggle

Thefirst20yearsofthe ociety'sexistencewerea periodofstruggleandtrial. Intheyear1924,despite theuntiringeffortsofthe executive,thesociety"was indebttosuchanextent thattherewasseriousfeat' lestthesocietymighttr compelledtosuspendits postolicwork."

However,underthecounselandguidanceofthe president,ArchbishopMannix,Rev.Dr.Beovich initiatedasuccessfulforwardmovement,whichconsolidatedthesociety'swork.

Asharpupwardtrendin A.C.T.S.salesoccurredin themiddlethirties,aperiod whichconcidedwiththe beginningsofCatholic ActioninAustralia.Over amillionandahalfpamphletsweresoldinthefive years,1935-1940.
