Thedemocracies,however,hadfoundacompromise.ItwastheWelfareState.Thisdevouring notionretainedtheessenceofthesystemofcapitalisteconomics(strippedofthesocialirritantof personalaggrandisement)andthecoreofthetotalitariandictatorships(divorcedfromterrorandopen coercion).Buttheconcentrationofpoliticalpower remainedandgrewwithmight.Thenations, spirituallysapped,wearyofwarandriddenwithall kindsoffears,werereadyvictimsforaplotWhich proceededalongthelinesofbenevolenceand security.Thedeprivationoflibertywas,afterall, nonewthing.Thepeopleshadbeenfilchedoftheir economicfreedomoveraperiodof400years;the processwasessentiallycomplete.Societyeverywherewasheavywiththeatmosphereofproletarianismandnovoicewasraisedagainstit.It wasacceptedasinevitableandpermanent.The onlychangeinmoderntimeswastheexchangeof capitalists-thesubstitutionofthekindly,impersonal,paternalStatefortheavid,ruthlessand anonymousprivategroups. Shetookherbeadsand forseveraldecadestheapparitionaccompaniedher inprayer,thenwithabeckoninggestureinvitedherto comeoutside.Marietteattemptedtoobey,butwas stoppedbyhermotherwho, withafeelingnowthat something extraordinary wastakingplace,thought itprudenttoboltthedoor.

When,shortlyafterwards, Mariette'sbrotherreturned, therewasnosignoftheapparition.Nothingwassaid toanyoneaboutMariette's experienceuntilnextday. ThenewsreachedtheAbbe shortlyaftertheconclusion ofhisnovenaforguidance concerningBeauraing!

Atfirstitseemedtohim thatconfusionwasbeing addedtoconfusion.He said:"Onedoesn'tseeOur Ladyaseasilyasthat."

HavingsearchinglyquestionedMariette,hewarned heragainstimagining things;butheknewher foranhonestchildnot giventotellinglies,and herotherwiseunexplainableattendanceatmornine Massandherdetermined effortstolearnhercatechism,deeplyimpressed him.Hebegantomakea carefulrecordofeverythingshetoldhim.

OnJanuary18,as7 o'clockapproached,Marietteranoutofherparents' homebeforeshecouldbe stopped.Herfatherdiscoveredherkneelingbythe gate,inthedark,freezing night,flingingoutherarms

parition'srequest,Marlette plungedherhandsinthe water."Thisspringis,set apartforme,"theapparitionsaid,andthenfaded intothedistance.

Nextevening,atthesame hour,Mariettebeheldthe apparitionagain:aspreviously,abeautifulyoung lady,garmentedinwhite, withabluegirdle,anda roseatherfootandarosaryinherhand.Mariette hadbeeninstructedtoask theapparitionWhoshewas. Theanswercame:"Iam theVirginofthePoor."

TheseappearancesofOur Lady,eightinall,alwaysat theeveninghourofseven o'clock,continueduntil March2.Duringthem,it wasexplainedtoMariette thatthespringwasforall peoples,allnations,forthe reliefofsicknessandsuffering.

OurLadysaidshedesiredalittlechapel;exhortedMarietteseveral timesto"prayearnestly, prayhard";andasthough in Abbe'sdirectresponsetothe novenaandsomany otherprayers,shesaid: "Havetrustinme,Ishall havetrustinyou."

Againsheconfidedasecret,whichnothinghasinducedMarlettetodivulge. Herfinalwordswere:"Iam theMotheroftheSaviour, MotherofGod.Praya greatdeal.Farewell."Thus culminatedtheprayersof theBelgianpeopleforenlightenmentonBeauraing!

There,thefivechidren stooduptothemostgruel-lingexaminations,asdid MarietteBecoatBanneux: andatbothplacescuresof theillsofbodyandsoul soonbegantotakeplace.
