Next,agentleman-Ithinkitisaman fromthewriting-whochoosesaspen-name thetorridtitle,"Timbuctoo,"Perth,asks whatisthemeaningof"sevenyearsand sevenquarantines,"atermsometimesfound inprayer-booksaftercertainprayers.
R.:Asyouhaveprobably surmised,theword"quarantine"inthiscontexthas nothingtodowiththeisolationimposedonshipswhen theyarriveatFremantle withpeoplesufferingfrom infectiousdiseases.Inboth cases,however,quarantine comesfromtheLatinword for"forty."
Inyourprayerbookthe termmeansthattheChurch hasattachedtothesaying ofthisprayer,undercertainconditions,anIndulgenceofsevenyearsand seventimesfortydays.
Icanimaginesomelistenersmilingsuperiorlyand thinkingtohimself:"There youare,theR.C.Churchis justasbadasIhavesuspected.ThisIndulgence businessmeansthattheold boywhosaysthisprayeris givenafreehandtosinfor sevenyearsandsevenquarantines!"
Wrongagain,Cuthbert; youareverywideofthe mark.NeithertheCatholicChurch,norevenGod Himself,couldgiveany manpermissiontocommit evenonesin.Indulgences onnoaccountgiveaperson leavetocommitsin.Anotherwidespreadmisconceptionamongnon-CatholicsisthatanIndulgence meanspardonforpastsins: gainanIndulgenceandyour sinsareforgiven!Again, thisisgrosslyuntrue.
Sincanbeforgiven, only throughrepentanceandthe SacramentofPenance.Unlesstheguiltofsinhas firstbeenforgiventherecan benoquestionofgainingan Indulgence.
Whatthen,isanIndulgence?Whenasinnerrepentsandconfessesagrave sin,hereceivespardonfor theguiltofthatsin,pardon alsofortheeternalpunishmentwhichthatsinentailed.Butthoughtheeternal punishmenthasbeenremitted,theremaystillremain whatis"temporalpunishment?!viz.,somepenalties tobepaid,eitherinthislife
orinPurgatory,inorderto atonefortheself-indulgence whichsininvolves.
Now,thesepenaltieswe canpaybyprayer,byearnestlyreceivingtheSacraments,byvariousgood worksandbyself-denial. Butinmakingamendsto Godforpastsinswhichhave beensubstantiallyforgiven wearenotalone.Arewe not,asSt.Paulsays,one withChristandHisSaints; asinalivingbody,each partofwhichwheninneed candrawstrengthandnourishmentfromotherparts ormemberswhichhave somethinginreserve.So we,thesicklymembersof Christ'sMysticalBody,can drawontheinexhaustible reservoirofgoodthings donebytheinfiniteChrist whenHelivedanddiedfor us.
Andthedispenserofthis treasureis, ofcourse, the ChurchwhichChristsetup tocontinueHisworkof lookingafterthespiritual welfareofHischildren, and towhichHegaveallthe authoritynecessaryforthis purpose.ThisIdonothave toprove;itisindeedevident.
ForifChristgavegreater powertoHisChurchtoforgivetheguiltofgravesin withitseternalpunishment-anditisclearfromSt MatthewthatHedid-He includedthelesserpowerto remittemporalpunishment whichmayremainaftersin isforgiven.

Inthefirstcenturiesof theChristianerathosewho receivedforgivenessfor gravesinhadtodolengthy, severeandpublicpenance. Graduallytheseveryseverepenancesweremitigatedandlaterabolished. Butsincetheverymild penancesthattooktheir placewerenotconsidered
sufficientatonementforsin, theChurchbecamemore liberalinaddingtothepersonaleffortsofthesinner bydrawingmoreandmore fromthetreasurythatwas inherkeeping,i.e.,theinexhaustibleover-abundant meritsofChristandthe saints.Thusthesystemof Indulgencescameintobeing.
Tosumup:anIndulgence isaremission, throughthe poweroftheChurch,of someorallofthetemporal punishmentwhichmaystill bedueforsinafterthesin itselfhasbeenforgiven. The sevenyearsandsevenquarantines, towhichyourefer, meanthatfordoingcertain goodworksorsayingcertainprayerstheChurch grantsaremissionoftemporalpunishmentroughly equivalenttothatlengthof publicpenanceintheearly daysofChristianity.
Isayroughlyequivalent; wecannotsaypreciselyhow muchofthedebtforsin suchpartialindulgenceswill pay.Buttheexpressionof timeattachedtovariousindulgencestellsustheirrelativevalue.Thusanindulgenceof300daysismore valuableinitselfthanone of100days.Butonthe fervourwithwhichwe carryouttheprescribed goodworkswilldepend whetherthatindulgenceis forusasvaluableaswould havebeenoneorthreehundreddaysoftheearlier penance.
Thenumbers,therefore, mustnotbetakentooliterally,and-needweaddthespiritinwhichthese prayersorgoodworksare carriedoutismoreimportantthantheirliteralfulfilment.Indulgencesarenot apenny-in-the-slotmachine,assomemayimagine.
