Twothingshavestruckmeparticularlyin readingthesearticles:first,eachshowedthewriter beingattractedtotheChurchbyadifferentroute, byadifferentappealandsecond,howlittle,inmost cases,otherCatholicshelpedtomaketheirentry intotheChurchmoreeasy.

DifficultiesHedge Convert-Making

Atthepresentrateofconversions,theoretically,itwilltakealmostfivehundredyearstosee thewholeofAustraliaCatholic.Butisnotthisour hope?Isnotthiswhatweallsaywedesireand whichweallprayforsoregularly?Itis;butthe mostvitalquestionofalliswhatarewedoing aboutit?Inpracticeforthegreatmajorityof Catholics,theanswermustbe-absolutelynothing.

NotonlyaremostCatholicpeople,whobelieve, allofthem,thattheyaremembersoftheonetrue Church,doingnothingactivelytobringnon-CatholicsintotheFoldbutverymanyofthem,sometimesbyoutrighttreacherytotheirprinciples, sometimesbycarelessbadexampleormoreoften byjustindolentinactivityaredoingmuchtodiscourageandtodissuadehonestanduprightnon-Catholicsfromevenenquiringintothetremendous claimsoftheCatholicChurch.

Thisisnotanacademicproblem.Itisnotjusta matterofunattainedhighideals,whicheventhe moderatelycynicalman-of-the-worldwillinsist areneverreachedexceptbythefew.Itisamatter oflifeanddeathtotheCatholicChurchinAustralia. Ifwedonotgrowweshallbecomeoldanddie.Is thisnotbutascareheadline?Idon'tthinkso.

SLOWERDEFAULTISNOTVICTORY

Manyofourloyalfaithfulwillsaythatthe CatholicChurchinAustraliaisthemostunited, cohesiveandinfluentialbodyofChristiansinthe countrytoday.Thismayormaynotbetrue.Ifitis, itissayinglittlefor,theotherreligiousbodiesand againifittrue,itiscoldcomforttoclaimasavictorythatweareslippingbehindmoreslowlythan therest,whenitshouldbeamatterforprofound dismaythatwearenottakinggiantforwardstrides asistheCatholicChurchinmanymissionary countriesoftheworldinourtime.

Ah!'missionarycountries'!Here,Ithink,isthe veryheartofthematter.Missionarycountries,we imagine,areoverseas,nothereathome.Theexpansivemissionaryzealofpriests,Brothers,Sisters, catechistsandlay-folkisnecessaryandtobeexpectedinAfrica,IndiaandChina;inAustraliasuch zealfortheHouseofGodneednoteatusup.

Weareestablished;wemustmaintain;wemust holdwhatwehave;wemustbeentirelypreoccupied withthesheepwhichhasperishedfromtheHouse ofIsraelandforgetthatthereareothersheepnot ofthisfoldandthattheyalsomustbecalledsothat thereshallbeoneFoldandoneShepherd!

INITIATIVELACKINGINACTIVEZEAL

Ofthepresenceofalargevolumeofineffective good-will,Ihavenodoubtwhatsoever.Toutilize thislatentfundofactivityistherealproblemthat isconfrontingus.

Whatisessentiallythefirstobstacletobe surmountedisthecorrectionofanattitude.Before anypracticalplanofcampaigncanbeconsidered, notonlymustthetroopsbepreparedandtrained fortheimplementationbothoftheimmediatetacticsandtheoverallstrategy,butthegeneralmass ofourCatholicpeoplemustbeconvincedofthe needofthecampaign,lesttheysabotageitby apathy,indifferenceormisguidedoppositionbehind thelines.

Nothingcanbemoredemoralizingforanarmy thantherealization,oreventhefearfulsuspicion, thattheirownpeoplearenotloyallyandenergeticallybehindthem.Thatiswhatwasmeantby theneedofachangeofattitude.

TheaverageCatholicAustralianisnot,interestedinhisfellownon-CatholicAustraliansfroma religiouspointofview.Throughighoranceoften hehasnosympathyatallfortheirprejudicesand heterodoxbeliefs.Helittlerealizesthehonestyand sinceritythatinspiremillionsofthem.

Heistooapttostigmatizeas`wowsers'and argotsthosewhoseoppositiontotheChurcharises fromthefactthattheydonotknowher;theignoranceofthesenon-Catholicsgenerallybeing foundedinculpablyonacompletelydifferentoutlookarisingfromunquestionedprejudicesingrained overfourcenturies.

DISTRUSTMUSTBEDISSIPATED

Aplanofcampaignisneededinmanyplaces andinothers,plansofcampaign,thatwouldbe hardtoimprove,arealreadyinoperation.However,whilecharityandkindlyappreciationofnonCatholicdifficultiesarelackinginmany,thegood thatisbeingdoneatconference,lectureorinstructionisonlytoofrequentlybroughttonoughtby theclashbetweenprincipleandpracticewhich oftenwillbeonlytoobbvioustotheenquiringnonCatholic.

TheunreasoningandoftenunreasonabledistrustwhichsofrequentlyexistsbetweenCatholics andnon-Catholicsonthereligiousplanemustbe dissipated.TheacceptanceoftheCatholicFaithwill notbringwithitmedievalismandquasi-feudal constraint;neitheristheordinarynon-Catholic tryingtoruintheChurchofRome.

AbriefhistoricalreviewofthefourProtestant qenturiesintheEnglish-speakingworldmay,by showingtheoriginsofdistrust,helptodispelthe prejudiceswhichremainsostronglyevenafterthe causesnolongerexist.

TheschismandheresyofHenryVIIIand EdwardVItookthesubservientandtimorousEnglishChurchbysurpriseandonlyfourbishopsof theEnglishdiocesesrefusedtheoathoftheKing's Supremacy:St.JohnFisherofRochester;aSpaniard,deAthequa,whoheldaSeeinWales(hehad beenachaplaintoQueenCatherine);Cardinal Campeggio,whowasabsenteeBishopofSalisbury andGhinucci,absenteeBishopofWorcester.Abbots, monks,friarsanddiocesanclergyfollowedtheir leaders,naturallyenough,almosttoaman.(There were,ofcourse,afewnotableexceptions).

Practicallythesamehappenedinthosedistricts ofIrelandwheretheKinghadanyrealauthority. ArchbishopBrownofDublininthePalewasa loyalandsubservienthenchmanoftheKing.ArchbishopCronierofArmaghintheO'Neillcountry hadthecouragetobeloyaltotheHolySee.

Whatisoftenforgottenbyustodayisthe literallyreligiousvenerationinwhichKingship washeldinthesixteenthandseventeenthcenturies. TheKing,theLord'sAnointed,partakingofmany ofthepowersandprivilegesofboththesecular andtheclericalstate,wassacred.

Thefirstimpulseofeveryonewastoobeythe Kingwithoutquestion.Thesecond,inEnglanda', least,aidedforthefirsttimebyskilfulpropaganda onanationalscale,wastoapproveanymeasure whichcurbedtheinterferenceofforeignpotentatesincludingthePope.

Don'ttellmeIamtoosevere.Imeanthiscriticismasmuchandmoreformyselfasforothers. Iamnotminimisingnordecryingthemagnificent andsucaessfuleffortsofmanygrou\psandindividualsthoughoutAustralia.Iammerelyasserting withsomeemphasis,becauseIbelieveittobetrue, thatthevastmajorityofCatholicsinthiscountry takenoinitiativewhateverfortheconversionof otherstotheTrueChurch.Ifpeoplecometothem, anddesirehelp,encouragementorinstructionthey, almostinvariably,getitwillinglyandconscientiously.Butgoaftertheminclub,factory,workshoporplayingfield?Rarely.

ThereislittleoftheactivezealthatlandedSt. FaulinthescepticalrostrumoftheAreopagus; thatdraggedFrancisandDominicandtheir,thousandsofordinaryfollowersfromcomfortablehomes orcanonriestorepairtheChurchoftheirtime,which wasravagedbyheresyandindifference(itsounds like20thcenturyAustralia);thatsentFrancis XaviertothewaterfrontsoftheComorinCoastand ofKyushu,(somuchlessChristianthanourown waterfronts?).

Andtogetawayfromcanonizedsaints,who ^mayseemtooremote,thereisamongstusinAusOahelittleofthatactivezealwhichisdriving thousandsofordinaryfolkto-daytosweatandtoil andtoovercomepaganismsosuccessfullyinthe manyregionsofthe'missionfields'.

Thereisnothingtobegainedfrompublicly makingthesecomplaintsunlessthosewhofeelthat theyareconcernedarepreparedtomakesomereal efforttoremedytheposition.Thereislittlepoint inmourningthatofeveryhundredAustralians eightyLonearenon-Catholicsunless,(eachaccordingtohisopportunities),agreatmanymoreCatholicsarewillingtobecomemoreapostolic.

onlytotheNewmansandChestertonofthisworld withtheirphenomenal,Grace-aidedvision.Others mustuseinstruments.Iftheseinstrumentsare faultytheimageoftheCatholicChurchwillbe distortedandevenrepulsive.Rememberthatthey oftenhavenoundistortingmeansattheirdisposal. Ifonlywecouldoffertomorepeoplethemeansof seeingtheChurchtrueandasShereallyis!

IamtryingtoemphasisethatanessentialprerequisiteforanycampaigntobringmorenonCatholicsintotheChurchisagreaterappreciation oftheirdifficulties;moretolerantunderstanding ofthestrengthoftheirprejudices.Theaverage non-Catholicisnotabiggerfoolthantheaverage Catholic-andheisoftenabetterman!

NON-CATHOLICSINCERITY

Theaveragenon-Catholicministerisnotan insincerecharlatan;heisoftendoingaverygood jobwithverypoortoolsathisdisposal.Thezeal ofamanwhocanministerandpreachSunday afterSundaytoamerehandfulofpeoplewithout fallingintothemostdespondentdiscouragementis averywonderfulthing.Somenon-Catholicchurches arecrowdedeverySunday;ifpersonalityandeloquencewereprerequisitesofafruitfulministryin theCatholicChurch,wouldallourchurchesbeso thronged?

Thewriterhasanon-Catholicrelativewho prayseverydayforthereunionofChristians throughouttheworld.Sheisdismayedbythe frequentevidenceofStatecontrolwithinthe ChurchofEnglandbutquitehonestlysheconsiders thisanabusethatshouldbereformedratherthan avalidreasonforleavingaChurchsheconsiders tobeabranchoftheTrueChurch.Sheisoneof manythousands.

ManyAnglicanprestsprayforthePopein thecanonoftheir'Mass'andafewgosofarasto prayalsoforthe'Roman'CatholicBishopoftheir districtratherthanfortheAnglicanOrdinary. Thismayseemunintelligiblymuddle-headedtous

BlindedbytheinstincttoobeytheKing,flatteredintheirnewnationalisticspiritbytheexclusionofforeignpower,theEnglishnationawoke fromitstorportofinditselfseparatedfromthe unityofChristendomandapreytoeveryheresy thathaddisturbedtheChurchforthepastfifty years. Theunletteredmultitudewascontenttoaccept whateveritwasoffered.Themorelearnedleaders, havingoncecravenlysoldthepassbytheirfirst betrayal,foundthemselvesforcedagainsttheir consciencestoaccepteverysubsequentchangeto whichtheirinitialfatefulconcessioninexorablyled.

Thencamethereaction.Theactiveandsuccessfuloppositionwhich,aftertwentyyearsof retreat,wasledbythegrowingnumbersofmissionaryprieststrainedinthenewseminariesand JesuithousesoftheContinent.Thesuccessful, heroicandoftenfantasticallyromanticactivitiesof thesepriestsledtothebringingbackofthousands oflapsedandsecretCatholicstothepracticeoftheir Faith;itled,too,totheviolentpersecutionofCatholicsingeneralandofthesemissionarypriestsin particular,byaProtestantGovernmentreallyfearful thatitmightbeoverturned.

Thispromisingcounter-attackfailedinthelong runmorebecauseoftheslowattritionofheavyfines, sequestrationofpropertyandexclusionfromhonourableofficeandemploymentthanbecauseofthe torturesandexecutions.Aftertheseventylongyears ofElizabethIandJamesI,(Elizabeth48,James 22,)theCatholicsfoundthemselvesahatedminority,suspectedoflatentdisloyaltyatalltimes.They retreatedintothemselves,resentfuloftheirexclusion frompublicoffice,evermoreandmoreimpoverished bytheimplacablefinesforrecusancy.

Theywitnessedthecontinual,terriblescandal offamilyafterfamily"goingtoChurchandreceivingtheSacrament"inreturnforprosperityandpromotion.TheypractisedtheirFaithinsecretandeven duringtherelativelylongperiodsofnegativepersecution,viewedtheirProtestantneighbourswith reserve,suspicionand,nodoubtsometimes,witn envy. VerymuchthesamewasthecaseinIrelanc. True,aftertheinitialnumerousbetrayalsunderthe firstsurpriseattackbyHenryVIII,thevastmajority oftheordinarypeoplebravelykepttheiroldfaith. Manyofthenaturalleaders,thenobles,however succumbedtothelureofaffluenceandofficeand becameProtestants;thosewhodidnotwereeither exiledorbytheforfeitureoftheirestates,were graduallyreducedtothestatusofthepeasantry.

SoonceagaintheProtestantswereseenasthe privileged,thefortunateandtherichandnotpeople tobepitiedandhelped.Therewas,ofcourse,the powerfuladdedfactthatthenon-Catholicswerefor themostparteitheranaliengoverningclassora plantedlegionofland-owners,unjustlyintruded, who,allofthem,weretryingquiteopenlytodestroy thenationalinstitutionsandthenationalidentity atogetherwiththenationalCatholicreligion.Their publiclyavowedpurposewastomakethecountry anintegralandcohesivepartofGreatBritain.

ANTAGONISMHASBEENCHIEFBAR

Thewholepurposeofthislongandapparently irrelevantdigressionintothepastisanendeavour toexplainwhyamongsttheCatholicsoftheEnglishspeakingworldtodaythereissolittlerealeffort Iletoinfluencethenon-Catholic.

TheenthusiasmofeverysincereChristianfor theconversionoftheheathenandtheinfidelisbased uponaconvictionthat,whatevermaybetheirviolenceandhostilitytotheFaith,theyareunfortunate, ignorantandoftenunder-privilegedandprimitive people,whodeservetobehelped,taughtandencouraged.Averydifferentattitudefromthatofthe CatholicminorityinEnglandorofthesuppressed majorityinIrelandforthreewholecenturies!

Duringthefirstfewdecadesoftheestablishment oftheProtestantreligioninEnglandandIrelandthe non-Catholicswereconsideredbythesupportersof theOldFaithascontemptibletime-serversandas materialisticagnosticstobedespisedforrejecting, abandoningandthrowingawaytheirancientCatholicheritageinreturnforRoyalfavourandsocial aadvancementandfinancialprofit.

Inlatertimes,nodoubt,thecontemptwould havedisappearedbutthehigh,mighty,prosperous governingclasseswerecertainlynot,fromaworldly pointofview,under-privilegedtobehelpedor ignoranttobetaught.Allthisoftenledunfortunately,thoughverynaturally,toaviolentmental .ntagonismtoallProtestants;astateofaffairs whichmadeanyrealattemptatconvertingthenonCatholics,humanlyspeaking,impossible.

ThehistoricaloppositionbetweenCatholicsand ProtestantsinEnglish-speakingcountriesgrewup overthree-and-a-halfcenturiesandsuchantagor_ism(frombothsides)couldnoteasilybebroken down.Eventoday,onehundredandtwenty-five yearsafterEmancipation,whentheconsciousnessof thehistoricalbackgroundhasforthemajorityfaded ompletely,theresultsto,alargeextentstillremain.

IMPEDINGRELICSARELISTED

Inmyopinionasummaryofstilllivingrelics .ifthepast,whichimpedegreatlythespreadofthe Church'steachingmaybetabulatedasfollows:

1.Areluctancetobringmattersofreligioninto theopenandawidespreaddisinclinationand shynesstodiscussreligionatall.Thisnot infrequentlydegeneratesintodownrightmoral cowardice.

2.Asocialinferioritycomplex.Unconscious,of course,andunadmitted,withblustersometimesasanattemptedcompensation.Thisattitude,historicallyunderstandablebutinexcusableunderpresentdayconditions,leads toself-exclusionfrompubliclifeandareluctancetotakepartinpublic,semi-publicand evenpurelycivicactivities.

3.AsuspicionofthemotivesofProtestantsor post-Protestantsingeneralwithatoofrequentimputationofinsinceritytothemand aconsequentunwillingnesstoassociatewith them.

.s 4.Therefore,(asaconsequenceoftheformer), oftenanunreasoningintoleranceoftheintellectualpositionofnon-Catholicsandalack ofappreciation,understandingandsympathy fortheirdifficultiesbothrealandimagined. Sometimesacontempt,quiteundeserved,fortheindividualnon-Catholicministerofreligion;acontemptandadislikeforwhich thereisnoexcuseandwhichshouldbe reservedfortheerrorsandheresiesthemselvesratherthanforthoseinnocentlypro- fessingthem.

AnycampaignfortheconversionofAustralia whetherpurelylocaloronanationalscalewill,in myview,besuccessfulonlyinproportionasthe abovecharacteristicsareeliminatedfrommoreand moreofourCatholicpeople.Ourpeoplemustco- cperateifcampaignsaretosucceed.Charitywill bethebasisandgrace-ladenmeanstosuccess. Uncharitablenessbasedonpastresentmentswill causeeveryefforttobestill-born.

61 Inapproachingthewholequestionofconvert- makingitiscomparativelyeasytolisttheshortcomingsofmanyofourpeople.Itisequallyeasy tofindoutwhatarefrequentobstaclestomore numerousconversions.Itismuchhardertomake sound,practicalandconcretesuggestionsforthe remedyingofthesefaults.Itisdifficulttooffera betterplanofcampaignthanthosewhichhave alreadybeentried.

Ishoulddaresaythatoftentheseexistingprac- ticalschemesinthemselvescannotbebettered.The onlyreason.inmyopinion,whytheydonothave moreplentifulresultsis,first,theobviousonethat

inmanyplaceslittleiseverdoneatalland,seconci, wherethereisanactivecampaign,notenoughhas beendonetoconvertfirstofanourownMass-going Catholicpeopletoanattitudemoreactivelyinterested inbringingnon-CatholicsintotheChurch. Therefore,StageOnewouldbeanall-outpulpit apostolateonthepartoftheclergy;drivinghome,in seasonandoutofseason,thefactthattheonlytrue signofreallyliving,supernaturalFaithistheactive intentionofsharingitwithasmanyothersaspossible."Nonpossumusnonloqui .",saidtheApostlesPeterandJohn,"wecannotbutspeakofthe thingswehaveseenandheard".

Asimilarapostoliccompulsiontospeakatall opportunitieswouldconverttheworldagaintoday. Ourgoodpeopleshouldbeurgedoneverypossible occasiontosloughofffromthemselvesthedried anduselessrelicsofprejudiceandofpersecutions longpast;toabandonthatdiffidenceandshyness, whichmakestheirapproachtoandreceptionof strangerstotheFaithandconvertsseemsocoldand inhospitable.

TheyStoodFirmWhenManyFell

reallyMuchconcernedwiththeverylargecities. Theyhavesuchlargeresourcesofpersonnelattheir disposal,bothinskilledandeloquentspeakersand inalargebodyofwillingco-operatorsbothamongst theclergyandthelay-folk.

Insmallercentresthingsaremoredifficult.The fewhundredorthefewscoreofactivelyzealous peoplearebeingcalleduponconstantlytomanand directeverything-sodalities,societiesandthe variousbranchesofthelayapostolate.Findingsuitableandsufficientlynumerouspeopletostaffa campaignforconvertswillneedcarefuleconomy oflabourandmethods.

Attheoutsetofplanning,adistinctionmustbe madebetweenthetypesofcampaign-whetheritis directedtowardsthosealreadyinterestedinthe CatholicChurchortowardtheintroductionofthe Church'sclaimsandofamoreCatholic'atmosphere' tothevastmassoftheindifferentorthehostile public.Thelatterformofapproachoftenentailscon- siderableexpense,inradioprogrammes,forexample, andotherformsofadvertising.This,toalargeextent,mayhavetobelefttotheinitiativeandresourcesofthelargercapitalcities.

Somethingintheformofadvertising,however. canbedoneinthoseprovincialnewspapersinwhic4 spaceiscomparativelycheap.Thishasbeendone recentlyrathersuccessfullyinEngland.Hefethe adviceofconvertscanwellbeusedinthecomposing of'copy'likelytoarresttheattentionoftheaverage non-Catholic.

WHATREPELSNON-CATHOLICS

Asregardsthosehovering,sotosay,withinthe penumbaofthelightofFaith,somethingactivecan bedoneinacommunityofalmostanysize.Iwas speakingtoaNewAustralianconvertrecently.He hadbeengoingtoMassonandofffortwentyyears beforeheactuallybecameaCatholic.Duringallthat time,hesaid,notoneofhisCatholicacquaintances hadeverencouragedhimtotakethedecisivestep. ShortlyafterarrivinginAustraliahewashandeda leafletafterMassinvitingenquiringpersonstoattendaseriesoftalksfornon-Catholics.Hewentand endedtwentyyearsofhesitation.

Thissortofsemi-personalapproachcanbe practisedeverywhere;everywhereCatholicpeoplecan beurgedtoco-operate;almosteverywherevisitsto Catholicinstitutionsandtalkscanbearranged.It issurprisinghowinterestednon-Catholicsaretosee theinsideofaconventandtohavethefurnitureand vestmentsofachapelexplainedtothem.Thisoften isthebeginningofadeeperinterest.

Howoftenhaveweheardconvertscomplainthat oncereceivedintothe'brotherhood'(?)ofthe Church,theyhavebeenentirelyabandonedtotheir owndevices.Theywerewooed,encouragedandhelp- edduringtheperiodoftheirinstructionandatthe timeoftheirconversionbutthendroppedlikehot cakesassoonastheyhpdbecomeCatholics-no doubtbecausetheyareusuallyconsideredacomp-letedjobandmuchunfinishedworkdemandsprior attention.ThisbringsmetoaSecondSuggestion: Weshoulduseconvertsmoreintheworkof convertingothers.Thiswillkillseveralbirdswith onestone.Itwillgivetheneophytesafeelingof welcomeandusefulness;itwillbeusingtogoo1 advantagethosewho,almostinvariably,areamong themostzealousandferventofourpeople;itwill beutilizingthose,who,fromtheirownpastexper- iences,willbestsympathisewiththedifficultiesof otherseekersforthetruthandbeatthesametime thebestqualifiedtoanswerthosedifficultiesinlanguageintelligibletothenon-Catholicmind.

RESERVOIROFCO-OPERATORS

Wehaveatremendousreservoirofvaluablecooperatorsatourdisposalwhichsometimesgoes quiteunused.Thevalueandusefulnessofconverts forwriting,lecturingandeveninstructingcanhardly beoverstressed.Theywouldbemostusefulmembers ofanyPraesidiumoftheLegionofMaryworkingin theconvertapostolate,forexample.Theywould oftenhavemostpracticalsuggestionstomakeregardingeffectivepublicityandthepreparationofadvertisingmatter.Becauseoftheirnaturalcontacts,they willfrequentlybeinapositiontooforintroducing otherenquirerstotheFaith,whentheyhavebeen encouragedanddirectedtowardsthisend.

AThirdPointwhichrequirestobestressed,in myopinion,istheneedformakingapriest,orothsr suitableperson,easilyavailabletotheshyenquirer. Almostallconvertsareunanimousonthispoint.A dislikeandaninstinctivesuspicionofthehypothe- tical"RomanCatholic"priestisanalmostunisersal non-Catholictrait.Ontheotherhand,theaverage Protestantisquitefriendlytowardsthepriesthe knows.

Ithink,thatinallourapproachestothegreat non-Catholicmajority,whetherbyradio,publiclecture,advertisementorpersonalcontact,weshould beabletosay:FatherSo-and-soisalwaysavailable atsuch-and-suchaplaceduringyourlunch-houror, say,betweenfiveandsixo'clockandhecanalways becommunicatedwithbyletteratthesameaddress. Theplaceorplacesshouldobviouslybecentraland easilyaccessiblethroughpublicpremises-aprivate addresswouldbequiteunsuitableforthepurpose.

ACatholiclibraryorbook-shoporrepository wouldbeexcellentbecausetheshyandnervouscan alwayspretendtobeenteringforapurelyordinary purposeandtheycantellthemselvesthatiftheydo notlikethelookofthingstheycangetoutwithout havingbeencompromised.Thislittleconcessionto embarrassedself-deceptionwill,Iamconvinced, payhighspiritualdividends.

IntheseratherhaphazardjottingsIamnot

Toconclude,justashortsummaryofthings whichoftenattractandthosewhichoftenrepelthe non-Catholicofgoodwill. Theyarerepelled: bytheideathattheyarenotwelcomeinour churches.Discreetnoticeboardsoutsidethe church,givingplentyofinformation,willhelp todispelthisidea. bythefeelingthattheywillbecoldlyreceived bypriestorpeople.(Theyoftenare,generallythroughourshyness). bygabbledprayersinEnglish,particularlyunin- telligibleprayersafterMass,hurriedStations oftheCrossandmumbledRosaries.Theaverage non-Catholicisnotrepelled,Ibelieve,bythe LatinoftheMass,whichinducesinhiman attractivesenseofmysteryandmysticcommu- nionwiththeAlminghty. fromadoctrinalpointofviewbywhatthey mayoftenconsiderasadditionstodogma,e.g. theImmaculateConceptionandtheAssumption oftheBlessedVirgin;toalesserextentbythe InfallibilityofthePope.Isay,toalesserextent, becauseoftheclearScripturalimplicationsof thePetrinetextsoftheNewTestament.FrequentandclearinstructionontheDivinecommissiongiventoanauthoritativelyteaching Churchwillhelptodispelthis.

WHATATTRACTSNON-CATHOLICS

Theyareattracted: bywellkeptchurchbuildingsandattractive furnishings,particularlyofthesanctuary. Butifdemoniacalpos-sessionsweresimplynatural disordersChristwouldhave deceivedtheJewsandthe ApostlesbyHisactionsand words.Andthisisrepugnant.

Innumerablepatristictextsprovethatcasesof truedemoniacalpossession existedinthefirstcenturiesandthatChristianshad thepowerofexpellinguncleanspirits.

Thesamethingisconfirmedbythepracticeof theChurch,whichinstitutedaspecialorderofexorciststodriveoutdemons, andintheRitualhasspe- cialprayerstofreethepossessedfromthedevil.

Itisprovedbyhistory, whichrecordsmanycases ofpossession,thetruthof whichitisdifficultto doubt.
