Theincorruptionofthebodyafterdeath hasalwaysbeenregardedasapossiblesign ofsanctity,asbeingaforeshadowofourown bodiesaftertheJudgment.

Isay"possible,"foritis wellknownthatthebodies ofsomeofthosewhowere notsaints-eventhoseof condemnedmurderershavebeenknowntoreveal aremarkabledegreeofpre- servationafterdeath.

KnowingtheexaggeratedfaiththeRussianOrthodox ruptionChurchplacedinincorasasignofsanctity,theSovietatheistshave displayedsidebysidein theiranti-religiousmuseums thebodiesofcriminalsand ofmenreputedsaints,and inthiswayhavedonegreat damagetoreligion.

Thedestructionofacorpserequiresordinarilyfrom15 monthsto40years,depend- ingonclimate,soil,andthe conditionsofburial. dividualNevertheless,specialinorsoilconditions maypreservethebodilyfeaturesperfectlyforcenturies,asinthecaseofa bodyfoundwitharope arounditsneckinthebogs ofDenmarkandbelieved tohavebeenahumansacrifice2,000yearsbefore.

Sunday,October24,willbeobserved throughouttheArchdioceseasMissionSunday.Thisyeartheoccasionhasacertain poignancythroughthesuddendeathin AugustofArchbishopBernardini,president ofthePontificalMissionAidsocieties.We reprintbelowtheappealofthelateArchbishop,pennedbeforehisuntimelydeath: Atthemomentwhenwe makeourappealtothe faithfulthroughoutthc worldforafittingcelebrationofMissionSunday, whichwilltakeplacethis yearonOctober24,the thirdSundayofthemonth, weshouldexultinspirit. Infact,itisannouncedthat theIndochineseconflict, which-foreightyears-has sowedvictimsandruins andswallowedupimmense economicresources,has cometoanend.

Therewillcertainlybe nopeacefortheadorersof God,fortheChurchofGod, fortheworksofGod:Indochina,withKorea,ChinaLateArchbishopBernardini andManchuria,willbeginwasApostolicDelegatehere. orcontinueherCalvary.

TheChurch,thelast forcetoremainerectamid theruinsofeveryformof civilization,engagedinthe struggleforthepreservationofhumananddivine values,willdoHerduty evenwhencruellyattacked witheverytypeofweapon, fromviolencetolies,to corruption.

Snareswillbesetfor youthsandchildren;but theChurchwillalwaysremainstrongintheconvictionthattheeternalvalues ofthespiritcannotperish, alwaysconfidentinthe indefectiblepromisesof HerDivineFounder,always convincedthatthestorm willpassandthatthesun ofjusticeandtruthwill returninsplendour.

Itisrightandproper thatweshouldsendawon) ofenthusiasticadmiration andtheassuranceofour solidaritycompoundedof prayerandaction,ofunderstanding,generosityand hope,totheBishops,Missionaries,nativeclergyand allthefaithfulofthe ChurchofSilence.

Bishops,Missionariesand nativeclergywhoareengagedinthedefenceand propagationofthetruth againstfalsehood,offreedomagainstslavery,ofthe spiritovermatter,should knowthatahalfbillion Catholicsawareoftheirsufferingsandunitedwith theminfaithandcharity donotceaseforamoment tothinkofthemandto sufferwiththem.

ThewholeChurchloves andactivelyfollowsour missionaries,theheraldsof thefaithandofcivilization. Missionariesarenotalone astheyworkintheforests andonislands,inthegreat metropolisesorintheremote villages,inseminaries, schools,hopitals,leprosaria andasylurflserectedand

Thiswillbeespecially trueonMissionSundaythiscomingOctoberwhenthe wholeChristianworldwill becalledupontogiveavigorousproofofitsfaithand charity.

Thepress,radio,television,thelivingwordoflecturersandmissionpropagandistsmustcreateand maintainahighlevelof missionaryfervour,the religiousexpressionthatis inseparablefromthetrue andauthenticChristian character.

InotedwhenDr.HromadkawasvisitingAustraliathatacertainsectionofnon-Conformistswas socrassinitshatredofRomethatitwouldallyitself, evenwithmilitantatheism,todoCatholicismsome disservice.Itisnotapleasantthought,butthepresentdomesticunpheavalintheLabourPartyhas broughtthisdistastefulcliqueintotheopenona purelypoliticalissue.Evenso,itrepresentsbuta tinyminorityandbynomeansreflectsonnonCatholicsatlarge.

Happilyinmanyinstances,asinChinaandIndoChina,thedevelopmentofanativeclergyandreligiousnewchapterstothestoryofChristianheroism. convertedpaganswhentheEuropeanmissionaries werecompelledtowithdraw.Andthefirsttestof theworthofthosenativeChristianswasmartyrdomatestinwhich,forthemostpart,theyaddedgloriousnewhapterstothestoryofChristianheroism. Theirdeaths,tortureorimprisonmentnotonlybore thehighestwitnesstothetruthoftheChristian Faithbutitalsogavethelietothebogusnationalism fosteredbytheKremlin.Thesetyrantsarenotconcernedwiththenationalityofthemissionaries-it istheirmissiontheyhateandtheyarebentonits utterdestruction.

Again,whilemartyrdomaddsenormouslustre totheChurch,particularlyinAsia,thegermination oftheseeditsuppliesisinthefuture.ForthepreFentthesheepgounfed,fortheshepherdsare strickenandthefoldiswideopentoraveningwolves. PSYCHOLOGYLATEINFIELD

Asaresultofthestudyofthemissal,Ibecame convincedofthetruthoftheRealPresence,soit wasonlyamatteroftimebeforeIbecameaconvert. Inthemeantime,variousfactorscombinedto turnmetoCatholicism.WhenIstudiedpsychology partoftheDiplomainEducationcourseIfound thatmanyso-calleddiscoveriesofthe"science"were merelyrediscoveriesofwhattheCatholicChurch hadbeenpractisingforcenturies.

Whensome400experts meetinconferenceona subjectsuchasthis,and manyofthemwritelong andtechnicalpapers,and mostoftheremainderhave importantpointstomakein discussion,fullandaccurate Pressreportsarehardlyto beexpected,eveninthe mostconscientiousperiodicals.

ThePressaccountswere generallyveryperfunctory, anditishopedthatsooner orlatersomethingwillbe madeavailabletotheinterestedgeneralreaderwho wantssomethingmorethan these,butfaltersatreading theentireproceedingsofthe conference.

Jesuit'sStatement

Althoughitisvirtually impossibleevenforthe best-intentionedreporterto giveafairimpressionofa theologicalstatement, a gooddealofattentionhas beenattractedbyastatementmadeattheconferencebyPereLestapis,S.J.

Itwas,indeed,adifficult andcloselyreasoneddocument.Theissuewhichattractedattentioncanperhapsbestbere-statedin thisway-whether"crescite etmultiplicamini"isacounseltothewholehumanrace atalltimes,orwhetherat sometimesandplacesit maybedesirablethatthe humanraceshouldnotincrease,andthatmeasures whicharecompatiblewith themorallawshouldbe takentowardsthatend.

Suchastatement,bya priestofprofoundspirituality,shouldofcoursebe studiedwithcareandrespect.Butitisentirely wrongtoseethis,asmany secularjournalistshave done,asastatementof"the attitudeoftheChurch."

TheNewYorkTimeswas morespecificandstatedthat theyhadreasontobelieve thatPereLestapis'statementshadbeen"cleared withtheVatican."There areothercompetentmoral theologiansatworkonthis problemelsewhereinEuropeandAmerica,andit certainlycannotberegardedasacausafinita.

thetheoreticalquestionof whatacountrymaydoifit findsitself,infact,overpopulated,theinteresting thingabouttheconference wasthat,onthequestionof whetheranycountrieswere infactoverpopulated,the advocatesofthepointof viewgenerallyknownas "Malthusian"foundthemselvesoutnumbered,*encircledandforcedtoretreat.

Anglo-AmericanFad

Theword"Malthusian" shouldmean,strictlyspeaking,onewhofollowspreciselythedoctrinesofMalthus. Malthus'writings were,onmanyimportant points,soobscureandevasivethatitisdifficultfor anyonetofollowhisopinionsprecisely.

Althoughhedisbelieved thelargerpartoftheAnglicanfaith,Malthuswasnot anadvocateofcontraception,asaremostofthose whousehisnamenowadays. Theword"Malthusian," however,bycommonusage, ratherthanbyliteraryaccuracy,hascometobeappliedtothosewhofearan increaseofpopulation,and whoseektopreventitby advocatinganincreaseduse ofcontraceptives.

Malthusianadvocacyis largelyanAnglo-American phenomenon.Insidethe UnitedStatesithaslargely ceased,andthesizeofthe Americanfamilyhasgreatlyincreasedduringrecent yearscontrarytotheexpectationsofalltheexperts.

ButagreatmanyinfluentialAmericansarefanaticallykeeninadvocating contraceptionasasolution fortheproblemsoftheunder-developedcountries.

Theearlierandmoreferventadvocacyfromthe Scandinavian countries, whichattractedagreatdeal ofattentioninthenineteenthcentury,hasnow practicallydisappeared,exceptforthefaintvoicesof nowelderlypeople.

Catholicline,thoughequalytheyareunwillingtotake aspecificallyanti-Catholic line;whereasitissecond naturewithEnglishand AmericanProtestantsand Seculariststotakeaferventlyanti-Catholicline.

Itwasmoreinteresting stilltoseethechangein attitudeofanumberofthe Indiandelegates.MalthusianismusedtopredominateamongwesternisedIndians,butanumberofrepresentativesattheconferencetooktheoppositeview.

Twogoodharvestsin succession,eventhough theyareasmuchdueto transitoryweatherfactorsas topermanentimprovements inproductivity,havehada remarkableeffectona somewhatmercurialpeople.

Inanycase,eventhe mostsecularistMalthusian feelsacertainchangeof atmospherewhenhecomes toRome;itwasmovingto seehowdeeplysomeofthem respondedtothepersonal sanctityoftheHolyFather whentheyreceivedhis benedictionattheaudience inSt.Peter's.

TheconferencewasopenedontheCapitolineHill, bythereadingofamessagefromtheSecretaryGeneraloftheUnitedNations.Insteadofthepolite mumbo-jumbowhich is commonontheseoccasions, Mr.Hammarskjoldsenta messagewhichmadeevery delegatesitupinhischair.

Twothousandyearsago, heremindedus,ageneral censusofthewholeRoman worldwasorderedbythe EmperorAugustus;andit wasveryprobablypreceded byaconferenceofpopulationexpertsmeetingonthat verysite.

ionisnowuniversallyhostiletoMalthusianism. Divorce,abortionandcontraceptionweremadeillegal inSovietRussia-oratany rateverydifficultofaccess -aslongagoas1936,and alltheotherCommunist countriesarepursuingthe samepolicy.

Dogmaticandpersecuting atheiststhoughtheymay betheycanrecogniseunnaturalsinswhentheysee them,anditmaybethat, attheend,therewillbe morehopeforthemthanfor thecomplaisanthumanist agnosticsofBritainand America.

NearToBlasphemy

Oneparticipantinthe conference-aseniorcivil servant,closelyconnected withtheformulationof Americanforeignpolicyperpetratedastrikingbut entirelyunconsciousblasphemy,epitomisingthepoint ofviewofthosewho,lackinganyotherobjectofdevotion,make"TheAmerican WayofLife"theirultimate objective.

Hecarefullydiscussedthe foodsuppliesofsomeofthe poorerregionsoftheworld andconcludedthatthey mightjustbeadequate. "Butmodernman,"headded,"cannotlivebybread alone.Herequiresanautomobileaswell."

Afterall,itraisesthe wholequestiorloftherelationsbetweentheStateand thefamily.Wecanperhapsseetheproblemmore clearlyifwestateitsconverse-inacountrywhich isclearlyshortofpopulation,hastheStateany moralrighttocallupon familiestohaveanymore childrenthattheythemselveswishtohave,orconverselytoaskthemtohave lessinacountrywhichis clearlyoverpopulated?

Thisdiscussion,likeany otherdisciissioninmoral theology,canonlybecarriedonattheoreticallevel, anditisimportantthatit shouldbesodiscussed.

Buttherearemanypeoplewholacktheintelligenceto distinguishtheoryfrom fact,and,nodoubtweshall soonbetoldthatthe Churchisconsideringthe "factsofover-population," whichthetheologianisnot competenttodo.These factscanonlybeassembled bythedemographerandthe economist.

Whatevermaybethe directioninwhichthediscussionsofthemoraltheologianseventuallyleadon

ChangesInFrance England,ofcourse,reeks ofit,asofanodourofdecay.Anyonewhotriesto bringupalargefamilyin Englandisgivenclearlyto understandthatheisdoing thecountryadisservice.

Thedifferenceinatmosphere,assoonasyougoto anyothercountry,isastonishing.InFranceparticularly,duringthelastgeneration,thesizeoffamily hasshownadramaticincrease,andthewholeattitudeofthenationhas changed.

Aninterestingby-product ofthischangeisthatFrance isnowtheacknowledged worldleaderindemographic studies.TheInstitutNationaledesEtudesDemographiqueswasestablished byagenerousTreasury grantimmediatelyafterthe war.

AblydirectedbyM.AlfredSauvy,ithasledthe worldinalmostallbranches ofpopulationstudy,includingthedevelopmentof somebrilliantnewmathematicaltechniquesformeasuringtrendsinthechange offamilysize,whichhave rendered"birthrates"and "reproductionrates"entirelyobsolete.

SuchanInstitute,like mostFrenchinstitutions, willbefoundtocontain convincedCatholics,nominalCatholics,nominalSecularistsandconvincedSecularists,workingtogether sidebysideinreasonable amity.

Letthisremindus,he said,oftheseriousnessof theproblemswithwhichwe werecalledupontodeal, andofthehumilitywith whichweshouldapproach them.

Thesamemorning,we wereremindedthatwhen thefirstWorldPopulation Conferencehadbeencalled in1927,theadvocatesof contraceptivepropaganda hadhopedforaresolution fromthisbodyofexperts whichwouldgivemoral supporttotheirwork.

Delegates'Revulsion

Butitwasdecidedforthe 1927conference,andfor this,thatnoresolutions weretobepassed.ThepurposeoftheConferencewas solelythepromotionandexchangeofscientificknowledge.

Aspontaneousfeelingof revulsionpassedthrough manyofthosepresentwhen aJapanesedoctor,withunemotionalcountenance,describedhowhiscountry (actingundertremendous Americanpressure,though hedidnotsayso)hadin 1949enactedaso-called EugenicLaw,underthe termsofwhich,lastyear, overamillionabortions wereperformed.

Butthistheydidnotregardasfinallysatisfactory. Lastyear,over33,000Japanesewomenwerepermanentlysterilised,andthey hopetoextendthispolicy, astheAmericanshavedone inPortoRico.

TheAmericansarenow perhapsbeginningtorealise, evenifBritishMalthusians donot,thecontemptwhich suchproceedingsearnfor themthroughouttheworld.

Thenextspeakerafterthe JapanesewasaBulgarian Communist,andhecertainlymadethemostofhisopportunity.Communistopin-

HolyFamilywereinCensus2000YearsAgo Onedoesnotliketoin-somethingtodowiththe dulgeinthevulgarsportof pluckingfeathersfromthe eagle'stail;andthemajorityoftheAmericanpeople probablywouldnotagree withstatementswhichare madebytheircountry's spokesmanonthissubject.

Contraceptivepropaganda byBritishadministrators andeducatorsinAfrica, Malayaandelsewhereis quiteaspersistentand shamefulasthatofthe Americans,andmayhave

feelingsofirrationalhatred forourcivilisationwhich breakoutamongAfrican peoples.

AsmallgroupoftheparticipantshadtherareprivilegeofhearingMasssaidin theCatacombofPriscilla, (gracedbytheeternalfreshnessofthereligiouspaintingsofA.D.130)byapriest whoprayedforthewhole conferencepourquela Lumiereaussipenetredans lesames.

DenialOfExtremeUnction ToSickIsFormOfCruelty

ExtremeUnctionisnotabsolutelynecessaryforsalvation,but itiswrongtoneglectit.Itiscrueltodepriveaseriouslyillpersonofit.Relativesandfriendshaveagravedutytoseethatthe priestiscalledtothosewhoaredangerouslyill;andtheyshould notwaituntilthereisextremedangerofdeath.

Weshouldallbeanxious toshowOurLordhowwe appreciatethiswonderful sacrament,bywillinglyreceivingitassoonaswe falldangerouslyill,andby callingthepriesttoothers attheearliestpossiblemomentafteritisknownthat anillnessmightprovefatal. Evenwhenapersonis apparentlydead,hemaybe anointedforsomeconsiderabletimeafterdeathseems tohavetakenplace,as accordingtomedicalscience apparentdeathprecedes actualdeath.

Allshouldpraythatthey willnotdiewithoutreceivingthisLastSacramen'. Theideathatthesickare disturbedbythepriest's beingcalledintoanoint themisoftenatemptation ofthedevil.

Experienceshowsthat thesacredanointingbrings withitgreatconsolation

andpeaceofsoul.Inany case,itisbettertoriskdisturbingtheinvalidrather thantoriskhiseternalsalvation. Thesacramentisadministeredtoanymemberof theChurchwho,having cometotheuseofreason, isindangerofdeath throughsicknessorold age. Itcanbegivenonlyonce duringthesameperiodof dangerofdeath;butifthe dangerpassesandthen recurs,thesacramentcan berepeated.

Ifapersonisnotinpossessionofhissenses,he maybegivenExtreme'Unctionif,whenhewasconscious,beaskedforit,at leastimplicityorwould haveaskedforit,even thoughheafterwardsloses theuseofhissensesor evenofhisreason.

Beforebeinganointed

thesickpersonshouldgoto Confession,ifhecan,and alsomakeactsoffaith, hope,charity,andsubmissiontoGod'swill.

OneoftheeffectsofExtremeUnctionistoremove the"vestiges"or"lingeringtraces"ofsin,thescar leftbythewoundofsin.

Thatembracesthemental obscurity,thefrailty,the lackofvigourinresisting furtherevil,whicharethe resultofsin.ExtremeUnctionrestorestocomplete spiritualhealth.

Further,ithasbeenthe constantteachingoftheologiansthatthissacrament alsoremovesthetemporal punishmentduetosinbut dependentlyonthedispositionsoftherecipient.
