MusicalCritiquesAreHelpful

Sir,-WereadwithinterestO.R'scriticismofthe W.A.SymphonyOrchestra andMr.Pekarek'sreply.We canonlyclaimtobeaverage membersofthelistening public, for, althoughnot capableofcriticisingthe technicalabilityofanyone memberoftheorchestra, pastexperienceandsensitiveappreciationhavegiven usastandardofjudgment thatcanbeappliedtoany orchestraasawhole.

Thefirstconcertofthe yeargaveusaveryfavourableimpressionoftheorchestraandhonesforthe future.Sincethatfirstenjoyment,anduntiltheconcertofSat.25th,wehave beendiAappointedinthe performances, despitethe factthatdueallowancewas madeforthesizeandbalanceoftheorchestra.

Thispointcannotbeoffered,wefeel,asanexcuse ofmediocreimpressionsreceived.Wehavealsobeen awareofananxiousatmospheresometimes,whenvi*OggartistshavebeenacconspaniedbytheStateorchestra,asmentionedby 0.R.inhiscritique.

InO.R.,surelywe,have acriticwhoseobvioustruth andhonestymayhaveoffendedsome,butinthe mainwehaveagreedwith hiscriticismasappliedto concertswehaveheard.It iswithoutdoubtayoung orchestra,andjustlydeservestheencouragement giventoanyimmature,artisticgroup,butdespitethe admirableguidanceMr.Pekarekmusthavegiventhem overthepastfiveyears,it wouldseemthatasawhole itlacksthevitalenthusiasm ofyouth.

Perhapstherehasbeen nooutrightcriticisminthe past,butabsenceofemotionalinterpretationandan apparentlackofenthusiasm amongitsmemberscannot beexcused.Thattheorchestraiscapableoffinerand moresensitiveexpression wasprovedinSaturday's concertwhen,onecould onlyfeel,itwasstimulated orprovokedbyjustcriticisminthisdirection.

Certainlywenoticeda markeddifferenceinthe presentationoftheworks chosenonthisoccasion, whenthewholeconcert, andtheBrucknerSymphony inparticular, wasvery satisfying.

Althoughweagreewith Mr.Pekarekthatthestand-

Doesnotthismakeitvital thateachandeverymember oftheorchestrashouldcarefullyanalyseanyadverse criticismbasedonasound judgment, forthebenefitf theorchestraasawhole andtheirfutureperformances?

Wethereforehopethatwe willhavemoreofthisconstructivecriticisminthefuture.
