YouthConveneToResolve ConflictOfChristv.World

TheannualY.C.W.StateConference commencedonlastFridaynight,atHighgate,whenalargeandrepresentative numberofmembersfromallbranchesin theStategatheredtoheartheopeningaddressesandthefirstpaperoftheconference.

Thispaper,"Theproblem ofworkingyouthinW.A.", waspreparedandpresented byNevilleWard,ofLeederville.

InacrispandbusinesslikemannerNevilledetailed thevariousproblemsaffectingthethreeaspectsofa youngworker'senvironment: hishomelife,hisworking life,andhisleisuretime.

Groupsthendiscussed thepaperand,followinga planofsetquestions,instancedindetailalltheproblemsoftheseenvironments.

Attheconclusionofthe discussion,andwhenreportshadbeengiventothe re-assembledConference, DanCallahan,oftheNationalExecutive,madea briefsummary:

"Beforewecandoanythingatallinourworkfor Christ,"saidMr.Callaghan, "wemustbecompletelyconvincedthatproblemsarein existencewhicharestoppingthegreatmassofyoung workersfromlivingafull Christianlife-preventing

themfromknowingandappreciatingtheirdignityas humanbeings,andassons ofGod.

"Itisimportanttorememberalwaysthatall youngworkersareinGod's minddestinedforaneternityofhappiness,asaresultoflivingtheirlivesin accordancewithGod'splan forthem.

"Wemustseeandbeconvincedofthetremendous contradictionwhichexists between,ononehand,the willofAlmightyGodinour regard,and,ontheother hand,thesituationasitactuallyis.

"Alltheseproblems,which havebeendiscussedinthe groups,arepartofthiscontradiction,anditisthejob oftheYoungChristian WorkersMovementtotackle and,underGod,toovercome them."

Bulbeck,andpresentedby PaulBurrows,on"ThefutureoftheY.C.W.inthis State."

Detailsconcerningthe techniqueandworkingof theY.C.W.Movementwere discussedagainingroups, andmuchdiscussionwas heldasaresult.

Someofthemethodsby whichY.C.W.canbecome amoreefectiveforceinthe societyinwhichmembers live,weredecidedbyConference,andwillbeputinto effectduringthenextyear.

Itwasresolvedatthe Conferencethattheexecutiveinvestigatefullyandas soonaspossibleworkfor theestablishmentofCredit Unionsinasmanyparishes aspossible.

FatherLeonhardJungblut S.V.D.,displayedhismasteryofIndia'snationallanguagewhilegivingevidence beforethecommitteeofthe workdonebyCatholicmissionariesamongtheBahalis,aprimitivetribeof MadhyaPradesh(Central province).

ThemissionaryisFather LeoJ.Steinbach,aveteran Maryknollmissionaryfrom Chariton,Iowa,whonow has40peoplepreparingfor Baptism.

ForalongtimeaShinto shrinededicatedtoUryu, theraindragon,stoodinthe middleofthecity.The shrinewasmovedin1908 andadoctorbuiltahospital onit.Thepropertywaslater soldtotheMaryknollFatresasasiteforamission.

FatherJungblutsaidthe onlybaitCatholicmissionariesemployedwasthelanguageofloveinwhichthey spoketothepeople.Itwas thislanguageandtreatment ofBahalisaschildrenof Godthatbroughttheminto theCatholicfold,headded. a Sir,-AspermanentconductoroftheW.A.SymphonyOrchestraforthe pastfiveyears,Iwasmost distressedtoreadin"The Record"ofSept.16anattackontheochestraplayers whichIconsiderunfairand unjust.Ihavedecidedto writethisletterbecause, also,Irealisehowdifficult itwillbefortheplayersto defendthemselvesagainsta sweepingattackwhichisdirectedatnobodyinparticularandtouchesthemall.

Idonotknowbywhat standards"TheRecord" critichasdecidedtojudge theW.A.orchestra,butI havemyownstandardsof judgementwhich,Ithink, deserveatleastasmuchrecognitionasthoseofthe critic,andafterfiveyears ofworkingwiththisorchestra,Icannotagreewith anythinghehastosay.

Firstofall,withoutany explanation,hequestions the"artisticintegrity"of theorchestra,andgoeson toaccusetheplayersofnot realisingtheover-allpictureofwhattheyareplaying.Mr."O.R."hasnot heardofthebassplayer whohadadayoffafter20 yearsandheardtheorchestraplayingfromthebody ofthehall.Afterwardshe wasmostannoyed,andtold hisfellowbassplayersthat whiletheywereplaying theirlovely"oom-pah" pieceinthe"Carmen"overturethebrassweredrowningthemoutwithanother tunewhichsoundedlike the"Toreador'sSong".

Thereisonlyoneperson intheorchestrawhoshould havethewholepicturethatistheconductor,andif theorchestrahasnotsatisfied"O.R."withtheoverall pictureofanyworkhehas heardImustbearthebrunt oftheblame.

Sir,-"LiberalStudent" claimswaterfluorinationas Red.Bycontrastarecent RussianU.N.contribution Statesthatincapitalist countriesthereissugar overproductionwhichsugar interestsaretryingtosell byheavyadvertisingof sugarluxuryfoodssuchas icecreamandsweetmeatsor byconversionintoalcoholic beverages.

Itisindicatedthatsugar andalcoholproduceobesity andindolenceandunderminemoraleandthatsweetmeatsandicecreamproduce acidinchildren'steeth whichattacksthemand causesrapidtoothdecay.

Whatthecriticapparently hasnottakenintoaccount isthefactthattheW.A. SymphonyOrchestra,like allthesmallerorchestras inAustralia,isnotbalanced. Inthefullorchestrathe proportionsofstringsto windisordinarilythreeto one,butinasmallorchestra of50playersthiswould meantoofewwind,andthe resultis19windand21 stringsinthepermanent orchestraaugmentedby another8-10stringsand2 or3wind.Withsuchsmall numbers,too,theplayer withlessmelodioustonecan beheardclearly,infacthe maycolourthetoneofthe wholesection.

Artists'Praise

Iamnottryingtosay thatalltheplayersare perfect-nobodyofplayers isperfect-buttheworstis noworsethanyouwould findincontinentalorchestras.Thedifferenceisthat inlargenumberstheplayer withnotosogoodtoneaugmentsthevolumewithout changingthecolourofthe section.

Tocondemntheorchestra asplayingwith"sloppyedgesandmuchuglytone," istoclosetheeyestothe limitationsoftheorchestra asabody.Todeducefrom thisthattheyare"abody ofplayerswhosestandards appeartohavenohorizons beyondthepayenvelope" iscompletelyunjustified andshowsalackofthe common-sensewhichshould beexpectedfromanycritic, irrespectiveofwhatother qualificationshemayor maynothave.

Nunsarethefashionthis evening,andIhavea furtherquestionfrom"Val'', TuartHill,whoenquires aboutBridgetPartridge, formerlySisterLigouri,who wasthesubjectofanarticle intheMagazine"People"of August11.

Itisthestoryofagirl whoenteredaconventin Wagga45yearsago.She wasveryhappyforsome yearsuntilitwasdiscoveredthatherteachingwas inefficient;shewasunable tocontrolaclassofchildren.Infairnessandjustice tothechildren,shewas thengivenlightdomestic duties.

Noonecanremainadrone inaconvent.Shecould haveaskedforadispensationtoreturntotheworld, anditwouldhavebeen grantedwithoutfuss.She chose,however,toremain.

Butdisappointmentanda senseoffailureprayedon hernerves;shebecamefretful,introspective,anddevelopedapersecutioncomplexwhichwaswithoutany foundationinfact.

Sheaskedforatonicand medicalaid,butwhen thesewerecheerfullygiven, shedeludedherselfthatthe doctorandSisterswere plottinghermurder.Rot,of course,butobviouslyshe wasbecomingunstable,and probablyirresponsiblefor theseflimsyfears.

Detailsareunnecessary, forthearticlein"People" isfairlyfull.Infairness, however,itmighthave givenmoreoftheJudge's summing-upinwhichhe criticizedtheactionofthe hostileProtestantfamily,the conductofthecasebythe OrangeLodgewhichwas markedthroughoutbysectarianbitternessandwhich tried,withoutanysuccess, tobringintodisreputethe conventsystem.

Hecommentedthatthe actionoftheconventauthoritiesininstitutingasearch forSisterLiguoriwasone thattheywereboundin dutyandcharitytocarry out.

"Iamamazed,"thejudge said,"thattheconvent authoritiesarecalledupon toexcusethemselvesfor havingsenttosearchfor her.Whatwouldhavebeen thoughtofthemiftheyhad notdoneso?"Wouldnot theheadofanyhousehold havedonesoifamemberof thefamilyclearedoffat midnightleavingnoword ofherdestination?

Theseshouldknow,and Iamconvincedtheywill tellyouwhateventhe formerSr.Ligouristillbelievesto-dayafterthirty yearsofanti-Catholicconditioning:"Iholdconvent lifeinthehighestesteem, andonnoaccountwould wishanyonetospeak againstit."

ConfusiononBible ChestertonearlydiscoveredtheweaknessofthenonCatholicpositionwhich soughttomaketheBible decideeverycontroversy.He sawthattheBiblecan speakonlythroughliving voices,onlythroughliving interpreters.Butwhenthese interpreters,speakingasthe voiceoftheBible,contradicteachother,confusion results.Whentheattemptto solvethedifficultyismade byenhancingtheauthority oftheBibleasthesole wordofGod,needingnointerpreterconfusionbecomesworseconfounded.

hisfatherforhavinglockedupabookofsuchbeauty andvalue,abookwhichthe sonthenproceededtotear intoathousandpieces.

"Iearlydiscoveredthat progressisworsethanProtestantismsofarasstupidityisconcerned.Butmost ofthefreethinkerswho werefriendsofminehappenedtothinksufficiently freelytoseethattheHigher Criticismwasmuchmoreof anattackonProtestant Bible-worshipthanon Romanauthority.

Onthecontrary,when shesaysthatagenuinevocationisbasedonreasoned convictionandthatonehas therequiredqualitiesand notonafeelingofattraction forthelife,MissBaldwin isonverysafeground.

ChurchLawInvolved

Nodoubt,asyousay,if whensherealizedhermistakeshedecidedtoremain. Godwouldhavegivenher thegracetopersevere.On theotherhandthisordeal mighthaveplayedhavocon hernervesandrenderedher unfittocontinuethelife.In thatcase-andseeminglyit wasMissBaldwin'scaseshewasperfectlyjustified inseekingareleasefrom herobligations.

Yourobjectionthatmarriedpeoplemaynotsimilarlyseparate,Ianswereda fortnightago.Incaseyou werenotlisteningthat eveningletmebrieflysummarize.MarriagewasinstitutedbyGod,andonlyGod canlaydowntheconditions. NowChrist,whoisGod, toldusthatmarriageisa life-longunion;divorceHe specificallyforbade.

Inthecaseofreligious Ordersofmenandwomen theChurch,notGod,isthe Founderandithasfull powertolaydownunder whatconditionsonemay enterorleaveanOrder.

Insciencedidweputourtrust...

ThencameWorldWar1.Therewasastronginfluencedevelopingtowardstheoccult.Allhadto beexamined:materialism,spiritism,theosophy,Buddhism,withcomparativereligioningeneralandwith anespecialleaningtowardsthephilosophiesandreligionsofIndia.

Whatstruckmemostforciblyaboutthisoriental schoolofthoughtwasitssubjectivity.Itbeganto dawnonmymindthatavastproportionofmankind mistakesthesubjectiveforthespiritual.

HANOI,NorthVietnam,Sept.16.-ThedefendersofDienBien-PhuhadMassuptowithintwohoursfromtheend.Theyhad fourpriestswiththemthroughoutthe55-daysiege.Thepriests nowbackfromaVietminhprisonrelatedtheirstoryofDienBien-Phu.

"TheendcameonMay 7,"Father(Capt.)Yvan Heinrich,chaplain,from RheimsArchdiocese,told theN.C.W.C.correspondent here."IsaidMass,surroundedbywounded,at3 thatafternoon.At5o'clock itwasallover."

Hisfellow-chaplain, Father(Capt.)MichelTrinquand,ofMeauxdiocese, hadsaidMassthesameday at11a.m.

WiththetwoFrench Armychaplainsweretwo youngParismissionaries, FatherPaulGuidon,from Lourdes,andFatherPaul Guerry,fromLyons.These twopriestshadstarteda missionamongtheThai peopleoftheregion.The Communistoffensiveforced themtowithdrawinto Dien-Bien-Phu.

AProtestantchaplain,the Rev.(Capt.)PierreTissot, parachutedintothefort threedaysafterthesiege began.Hestayedtothe end.

EverybodyinHoles

ThepriestsdescribedDienBien-Phu.Itwaslikea misshapensaucer,withthe Communistartilleryonthe rim.Insidethesaucer therewashighground,but theenemytookit.From thenon,theVietminhcould fireintothecentrefrom pointsonly650yardsaway. Theywerestillnearer+o someoutposts.Linesof .communicationwithinthe areawereallexposedto enemyfire.1

"Everybodylived in holes,"FatherHeinrichsaid.

Dien-Bien-Phuwasno fortressofstoneorbrick. Itwasapositionwhere FrenchUniontroopshad dugin,onandaroundan oldJapaneseairfield.They coveredtheirholesinthe groundwithcanvas,branchesandsandbags.Barbed wire,low"walls"ofclay andpiledsandbagswere theonlyfortifications.

"Fordaysahead,weknew abigattackwascoming."

FatherHeinrich,chiefchaplaininDien-Bien-Phu,recalled."ThenontheeveningofSaturday,March13, itbegan."

saidMasseverydayand threeMassesonSunday,in aidstationsandoutposts.

"Aftertheattackstarted,thenumberofCommunionsincreasedgres4ly,"FatherHeinrichsaid. "Inafewweekswebegan torunshortofaltarbreads andMasswine." Besides,Easterwascoming.Menwhomightmiss theirEasterdutyinsafer placeswouldnotneglectit inshell-poundedDienBien-Phu.

ParachuteHazards

Overtheradiotelephone thepriestaskedthechaplaininHanoiforaltarsupplies.Nextdayapackage containingMasswineand hostsdriftedgentlyunder awhiteparachuteintothe beleagueredarea.Itwas followedbymanyother "drops"forthechaplains.

"EveryFridayeveningI talkedtothechaplainin Hanoiovertheradio 'phone,"FatherHeinrich continued."Hekeptus suppliedbyparachuteupto theend.Someofthe packagesfellintotheriver oroutsidethedropzone. Wehadtocutuplarge hostsoccasionally.But wehadenough."

Eachpriestcarriedthe BlessedSacramentwith himallthetime.

"We'dmeetasoldieron hiswaytoorfromanoutpost.HewouldgotoconfessionandreceiveHoly Communionthereandthen. Themomentheappeared intheopenagain,hewas indanger.FatherTrinquandexplained.

HeroicLieutenant

"Abadlywoundedartillerylieutenantinsistedon makinghisfullconfession aloud,inpresenceofother officers who couldn't leave,"thepriestwenton. "Itriedtohushhimup, tellinghimadetailedconfessionwan'tnecessaryunderthoseconditions.But heinsisted.Hediedsoon after."

Therewerenearly1,000 CatholicsamongtheVietnamesesoldiersinDienBien-Phu.Thetwomissionarypriestsheardtheir confessions.

Thechaplainsalways foundGeneraldeCastries considerateandconscious oftheimportanceoftheir work. "Apriesttookcareof ofeachantenne(aidstation),"FatherHeinrich said."Threeofuswerein Dien-Bien-Phuprope-, whileFatherGuidonstayedatOutpostIsabelle, aboutthreemilesfromthe centre.

"Ineveryantenne,the doctorshadtoperform majorsurgicaloperations," FatherTrinquandadded. "Atfirstthecriticalcases wereevacuatedbyair.But afterMarch26thatwasimpossible,becauseofartilleryfireontheairstrip. Thewoundedhadtostay rightintheaidstations, whichbecameterribly overcrowdedlittlehospitals."

RedInhumanity

BothinVietnamandGeneva,theVietminhcommuniststurneddownappealstoholdtheirfirefor afewhours,toallowmercy planestoevacuatewounded.

"Theyfiredonambulance planesandhelicopters, markedplainlywithred crosses,"FatherTrinquand said.

Oneambulancehelicopter, carryingthebadlywounded sonofGeneralGambles, wasshotdownasittookoff inbroaddaylight.

"Itfellwithinourlines," saidthepriest."Lieutenant Gambleswaskilled.We foundhisrosarystillinhis hand."

ThePrimeMinisterinhis replyquotedAnthonyEden, theForeignSecretary,in theHouseofCommonsin Novemberlastyear,when hesaidthat"successivegovernmentshaveexpressed theirabhorrenceatthepersecutionofreligionandthe denialofhumanrightsanywhereintheworld."

SirWinstonsaidthegovernmentrestateditspositionlastDecemberregardingthetreatmentofCatholicsinPoland,andtheofficialparliamentaryopposition(theLabourParty) madeitclearthatthey sharetheseviews.

Thiswasheartbreaking, afterthespiritualharvests ofthepreviouseightweeks. "Thoseweekswerenot pleasant,"FatherHeinrich said."Butmanyamanwent toHeavenbywayofDienBien-Phu."

Expressingthehopethat therapidprogressofmedicinetodaywouldnotcause thedoctorstolosesightof thebenefitssecuredfor mankindbymedicineinthe past,theHolyFathersaid: "Whenthebarbarianinvasionssubmergedthe RomanEmpire,theChurch succeededinpreservingin itsmonasteriestheessential partofGreco-Latincivilisationand,inparticular, thewritingsoftheprincipalauthorsonmedicine.

"Moreover,faithfultothe practiceofChristiancharity, themonksgavethemselves tosuccouringthesickand infirm,andkeptalivethe traditionsfromwhichthe mostcelebratedschoolof theMiddleAgeshaditsorigininthe11thcentury, beforethefoundationof theuniversities."

ThePontiffwasreferring totheSalernoschoolofmedicinewhosestudents,he said,broughttheirhealing arttoallpartsofEurope.
