SALZBURG,Austria,Sept.13(NC.)-Bishop StefanTrochtaofLitomerice,recentlysentenced to25yearsimprisonmentbyacommunisttribunal inPrague,Czechoslovakia,isreportedtobecriticallyinthenotoriousPankracprisoninPrague.

Thereportssaythatthereislittlehopeforthe Bishop'srecoveryfromtheeffectsoftorture.The 46-year-oldBishop,aSalesian,was"banished" fromhisdiocesetwoyearsagoandlateraccused of"espionage."Requestsofpriestsforpermission tovisittheBishophavebeenturneddown.

Itisnotonlyduringlife thatthechosenoneswill comfortandconsoletheir parents,butatdeath, mothersandfathersofReligiouswillbefilledwith confidence,andgowithout feartomeetthatGodto whomtheysogenerously gavetheirchildren.

Ifonlymoreparentsreflectedonthedignityand valueofa"callfromGod", theywouldencourage,and notdiscouragetheirchildrenwhomayexhibitsigns ofareligiousvocationeither totheconventortothe priesthood."Theharvestis great,buthowfewarethe labourers!"

HewasbornatCusherdun,Co.Antrim,Northern Irelandandattheageof23 hemarriedandwithhis wifesailedimmediatelyfor Australia,landingfromthe OroyoatAlbanyinFebruary1892. HetravelledtoPerth, thenawildernessofsand withonlyveryfewbuildings.Afterfouryearsfarm experiencewiththelate Mr.LotonontheSwanhe selectedlandintheMoora districtandsettledtherein 1896,laterselectingfurther areasfromtheMidland RailwayCo. Hespentmanyyearsdevelopingandfarmingthe property;astimepassed withtheaidofthreeofhis sons,whonowownthe originalholdings. Fromtheearliesttimes hetookaactiveinterestin

GRASPEDNOTHINGOFTEACHINGS

SoonafterconfirmationIlefttheChurch,not againtoenterachurchfordevotionsforovertwenty ),ears.IhadgraspednothingthatIhadbeentaught. Icannotsing,andIhadbeenverybored.Thefault wasprobablymyown,formybrotherhasremained apillaroftheChurchtothisday.

Iseemtohavebeenanunlovingandunlovable child.IlefttheChurchbecauseIwasoldenough togetmyownway,andhadfoundsomethingbetter t,)doonSundays.

Dayschoolwasagreaterandbetterinfluence onme.Itwasacitycompany'sschool,well-establishedandwellrun,withfinebuildingsandacarefullycultivatedtradition.Further,unlikeSunday school,theboyswerebetteroffthanmyself.Some ofthemasterswerequiteculturedmen,whofor somereasonchosetospendtheirlivesrelievingyouthfulbarbarity.Theymadeagreatimpressiononme.

AlthoughIwasthenenchantedwiththetruths ofnaturalscience,Ireveredmostaclassicmaster, butwasmortifiedtofindanyconversationwithhim turnedtoenquiriesaboutmyelderbrother,asifmy interestinsciencemademeaphilistine.

CIRCUMSTANCESMAKEFORVIRTUE

MynewSundayoccupationwaswalkingandtalkingwithfriendsinthecountry.Thesewerethe arsofthehikingcrazeandmyschoolhadformed itsramblingclub,attractingtypeslikemyselfwho likedexercisewithoutorganisedsport.

Hikingwasawordwedisliked;wegotourinspirationfromGeorgeBorrowandR.L.Stevenson.In duecourseitbecameanoldboys'club;ladieswere acmittecltopreventthesecounterattractionsfrom disintegratingtheclub,andinthissocietyIspent someofthehappiestdaysofmylife.Iwasanearly memberoftheYouthHostelsmovement,andcrammedwalkingandclimbingtoursintoeveryholiday.

Catholiccontactshadbeennegligiblesofar. DuringthewarIhadtwoCatholicgirlsworkingfor rie;andtheydidnothingtojustifythesinisterreputationoftheirChurch.Infacttheywerequitenice girls,andnotthesorttobedominatedbypriestsor anyoneelse,includingme.

Butitwasfirewatchingatworkthatbroughtme intocontactwitharealCatholictalker.Ourfirst nighttogetherwetalkedallnight;afterthatwewere moremoderate.Hewasinterestedinphilosophy, e.ndwasattendingDr.Joad'slecturesatBirkbeck collegeintheevening.Ilearnedfromhimthatthe CatholicChurchhadaphilosophy,ofSt.Thomas Aquinas,andThomistphilosopherslikeMaritain. wasleftwiththefavourableimpressionthattheCatholicChurchknewitsbusinessthoroughly.

Inthesummerof1945IholidayedatOban,stayingattheLoyolaHotel.StayingtherewasaDr. Lavery,aGlasgowmedicoandanincomparableraconteur.Iwasgladitrainedsomuch,sothatIcould listentostoriesofWorldWarI,Malaya,Irelandand

IwasattractedtoEliotnotonlybytheprecision andeconomyofhisexpression,butbyhisconsistent refusaltobedrawnbeyondtheevidence.Yethe

hadbecomeaChristian.Hehadpublished"The WasteLand"in1922,butby1935,in"TheRock,"he waspresentingtheorthodoxChristianattitudeof lifeintheplainestpossiblelanguage.

IwaslaterinfindinEliot'spoetrythestateof mindthroughwhichIwaspassingexpressedina masterlymanner,thusgivingmeassuranceoftheir objectivereality.

Thesequence,"Gerantion,'"TheHollowMen," "AsnWednesday,"and"Marina,"coverthetransition fromdoubttobelief.Icanonlypointtothem,for theexpressionofthattransitionisutterlybeyondme.

Butthatistogoaheadtoofast.Atthetimemy icieaofGodwassomethinglikethis.InEngland imp°,rantpersonsareremoteandunapproachable; God,therefore,wasmostremoteandunapproachable.TheideaofitbeingpossibletooffendGod wouldhaveseemedabsurd.

BACKWARDSEARCHOBTRUDES

Sundayschoolhadtaughtmeotherwise,of course,buttheharpingonleprosy,crucifixion,blood andburntofferingssseemedliketheobsessionsofunhealthyminds,andIfledtothesweetnessandlight ofhumanism.SinceGodremainedhidden,IassumedHewishedtoremainso,andIdidnotpresumeto searchforhim.

AtthetimeIleftschoolthedepressionhadarrived,andalongwithsomanyothersmyfatherwas outofwork,soIbecameoneofthoseindigentstucentswhoappliedmodestabilitiesdiligentlytosecuringareliablecareer.Suchcircumstances,andnot soundprinciples,probablysavedmefromyouthful excesses.

Itseemsunlikelythattheadjustmentsofadolescencearehappyforanyone,leastofallforonewith amakeshiftmorality.Thetragi-comicsituationsof youngpeopletryingtofiteachotherintotheirdreams arestillpainfulinrecollection.Theydid,however, teachmethattheworldwasfullofothercreatures aspiringtohappiness,andprobablymadememore charitable.

MEANING

OFLIFETOTHEPOETS

Talkingwasmyaddiction.Withfellow-students,andinyouthhostelsalloverBritain,andon theContinent,too.Idiscussedeverythingunderthe sun.sometimeswellintothenight,andoftenenough itgotroundtoconsideringman'splaceintheuniverse. Pe-dingwasthenextbestthingtotalking,and onsolitarywalkingtoursavolumeofpoetrywouldbe mycompanion.Althoughthepoetsspokewithmore humilityonquestionsthatovershadowhumanity, theyseemedtohavetheclearervision.

Iwasalwayssurprisedatthethoughtlesswayso manyapparentlyintelligentpersonsburiedthemselvesincareersorfamilylife,orinotherwayscommittedthemselvesbeforetheyhadsettledfundamental questions.

"Howcouldyou."Iwouldask."bringanother personintotheworldwhenyoudonotknowwhy :'ouarehereyourself?""Doyoureallywantahome withalltheusualtrappingsorhaven'tyougivenit athought?"ButIwasdismissedasacynic.

FIRSTIMPRESSIONSOFCATHOLICS

Whenthewarcamemyfriendswhohadbusied themselveswithhomesandcareersabandonedthem 1.,rtheServices.I,ontheotherhand,feltlikesettlingdown.Activitieswerenowcurtailed;starvationandinvasionappearedaspossibilities,soIdecidedtoenjoydomesticpeaceforthetimethatremained.

Soithappenedthatwhilethewarbroughtdomesticupheavaltomost,inmycaseitbroughtdomestichappinessandpeace.Imarriedandlivedin apleasanthomenearmywork,whichhadnowbecomequiteimportant.Icouldnothelpreflecting bitterlyhowthewarhadcreatedademandforyoung people,whentheyhadsorecentlybeenadrugonthe market.

HAROLDWALTERPARKER

Jesuits.Thelast,ofwhomtherewereseveralabout theplace,weremadetoappearinaninteresting light.IrememberhimsayingofIrishpeasantsthat theycouldberagged,buthappy(hewascontrasting themwitharatherstiffEnglishfamilystayingatthe hotel),"and,"hesaid,"youcannotbemorethan nappy."

Hetookagreatinterestinallthevisitorsand quicklydiscoveredIwascontemplatingturningto teachingattheendofthewar.Hegavemeconsiderableencouragement,andtheadviceofhiswife,also adoctor,butformerlyaschoolinspector.

ThefollowingyearIwasteaching,andwentto Icelandtoseeformyself.Notconsciously,itwas myfire-watchingfriendwhotoldmethatIneededto seeaCatholiccountry. Idiscoveredformyselfthe charmofIreland;butwhethertheinspirationwas IrishorCatholic,Icouldnottell.Irecentlyfound thatcharm,capturedinabookofp)totographsentitled"APortraitofIreland."

HOPESPRINGSINANEWLAND

InmydesultorypursuitofhappinessIwasoccasionallydisturbed,eventormented,withunexpectedmomentsofgreathappinessorbeauty,beyondall hopeofattainment. Irememberoneparticular summereveningontheriver,themountain-topview cfthesunsettinginaseaofislands,andsoon.Others feltthis,too.

OnajourneyIoncediscoveredagirlhuddled withherchinonherkneesdreaminginthewakeof theship."Iwanttodienow,"sheannouncedwith herusualfrankness.Sheandherfriendweretwo fearlessgirls,butthatmadenodifference.Thelast IsawoftheotherwasabegraddledCommunistwith achildandseparatedfromherCommunisthusband. 'Neitherfearorcouragesaveus."

Itwasbecomingincreasinglydifficultformeto ignoretheclaimsofChristianity.Inmyyouth,betv:eenthewars,itseemedtohavebeenregardedas obsolescent,andthequestwasforitssuccessor.

NowthesecondWorldWarandtheatombomb weremoreencouragingforabackwardthanaforwardsearch.Someofthepoetsthathadbeenyoung betweenthewarswerenowexaminingtheChristian revelation,andmakingheavyweatherofit.

Weallknowsimplepiouspeople;thesoundness oftheirliveshastobeacceptedasaplainfactofobservation.Yetwhatsortoftruthisitthatsimple folkshouldgraspitbest?Neitherfearnorcourage saveus,norlearningeitherapparently.

Europeanditsproblemsseemedfaraway,nosqualor orpovertyinevidence,everyonehappilyoccupiedaccordingtohistaste,fullofhopeandenterprise.Here, ifanywhere,wasElDorado.

Ihadtochoosebetweentwoattitudestothe Church'steaching.One,thatitwastrue.Two,that itwasafabricationbythebestbrainsofEuropeto meetthedesiresofthehumanheart.IneithercaseI stoodtogainbyacceptingit;theonlyobjectionif thesecondweretruewouldbethedishonestyofacceptingit.YetlikeMaxBeerbohm's'HappyHypo- crite'Imightevenwearthemaskoftruevirtue withgoodeffect.Fortunatelyitdidnotcometothat.

Themysteriesoffaithwere,ofcourse,thedifficulty,andIsawnowayroundit.IstudiedCatholic doctrineassiduously.

ItwasshortlyafterthisthatIboughtabook entitled'TheVirginandtheChild'becauseIliked thechoiceofpicturesandverses.ManyofthepicturesIknewintheNationalGalleryandtheverses includedsomeofmyfavourites.Iwasenjoyingthis bookinSupremeCourtGardenswhensomething happenedtomewhichisdifficulttodescribe.Ilater founditdescribedcompletelyandaccuratelyasthe poem'TheTransfiguration'byEdwinMuir,butat thetimethenearestIcouldgetwasthedelightful visionoftheworldwegetinearlychildhood,and thefamouslinesofThomasTraherne;`thecornwas crientandimmortalwheat,whichnevershouldbe reaped,norwaseversown.Ithoughtithadstood fromeverlastingtoeverlasting.'

WhenIfoundtheselinesagain,from'Cent.iriesofMeditation,'andreadthemintheircontext Iwascertainwhatmyexperiencehadmeant.

ButinAustralia,thereis notasingleseatineither theRepresentativesorAssemblywhichsuchaParty couldwin.Ifanyofyour correspondentsthinkso,I shouldbegladtohear whichonestheythinkare vulnerableundersucha label.

Thetalethatmanyhonest non-Catholicswouldvote forsuchaPartyundera ChristianDemocratictitleis nothingmorethananidle dream.Toanyofyourrea- derswithexperienceofindustrialgroupactivityin theTradeUnionmovement tenyearsormoreago,the truthofthiswillbeselfevident.

Thesemovements(with orwithoutacapitalM) wererunonanon-sectarian hasimanyoftheirleaders werenotCatholics,andyet thestrongestandthemost effectiveallegationagainst themwasthattheywere inspiredbytheCatholic Church.Inspiteofthis, theyweresuccessful,but onlybecausetheiroppo- nents,beingineffectagents ofRussianimperialism,had noconstructive,rationallybasedpolicytooffer.

Thehopeforasystemof ProportionalRepresentation, expressedbyacoupleof yourcorrespondents,is equallyvain.SeveralAustralianStateshavetried thissystemanddroppedit andtheonlyHouseusingit today,namelytheSenate, isnoshiningexampleoflegislativeefficiency.Onpaper,thesystemseemsideal butithasnopractical chanceof',apingadoptedin theforseeaBlefutureand untilitis,itwillstillbene-

cessaryforacandidateto getbetterthan50%ofthe votestowinanyelectorate. Withregardtoindividual contributors,Ihavelittleto say.Mr.Bertola,whose mainargumentisapparently thathehasawifeandthree smallchildren,saysheis opposedtoCommunism. Thatisacoincidence,since Ilikewisehaveawifeand threesmallchildrenandI likewiseamopposedto Communism(althoughI don'tquitefollowtheconnectionbetweenthetwo).

ThepolicyofAustralia supportingthemilitaryoccupationofMalayaorIndoChinabecauseofourdip-lomatictieswiththeirEuropeanoverlordshasalreadyhelpedpushmany millionsofhelplessAsians undertheruleoftheSoviets andallowedRussiatomasqueradeastheliberatorof oppressedpeople.
