Thebeautifulclubhouse, hecontinued,wasnot merelyabuilding.Itwas apracticalexpression,and theclimaxoftheidealcf St.Thomas'tennisclub.He hopedthatyoungboysand girlsmightmeetthereon commonground-opponents,perhaps,inagameof tennis,butaspartnersina life-longunionintheSacramentofMatrimony.

Thesupportingspeakers wereMessrs.P.Sullivan, G.Edwards,andB.O'Dea, thechairmanbeingMr.M. Sayers.Thespeecheswere followedbyseveralmusicalitems,afterwhichafternoonteawasserved.

MembersofSt.Thomas'tennisclub,Claremont,hadgiven onexampleofheroicunselfishness,saidtheRev.P.O'Mara whendeclaringopenthefinenewclubhouse,(above),buildby voluntaryeffort,onSundaylost. valuedat£2,000,andconveyedtotheclubthebest wishesofHisGracethe Archbishop.

Undertheguidanceof twotradesmen,thebulkof theworkwasdonebybusy beesofmembers.Itis builtontheblockoppositetheconventschool, AgeneralCommunionand breakfastwasheldonSundaymorning,August22,at which80clubandjunior memberswerepresent.

At3p.m.theopening ceremonywasperformed bytheRev.P.O'Mara,beforeacrowdof200people, whobravedtheinclement weather.

Ineveryrespect,Sr.MargaretMary,wasamodel Religiousandagreatsource ofedificationtoherSisters inreligion,whonowmourn thelossofthiskindly-disposed,gentle,unobtrusive soul. Shortlyafterherprofession,Sisterwassentto Goulburn,N.S.W.,toshare theburdensoftheSisters whopioneeredtheestablishmentofthehospitalthere, andalsonursedinvarious otherhospitalsoftheOrder.

Sisterwasanativeof Melbourne,andpriortoenteringReligion,wasavery activememberofvarious Catholicorganisationsin thatcentre.Sheissurvived byasister,Sr.M.Loretto, ofSt.Joseph'sConvent, Sydney.

Withfaithandfervour,in keepingwithherreligious life,Sisterreceivedthelast Sacramentsandtillherlast consciousmomentpoured outherheartingratitudeto Godforallthegracesher Religiousvocationhadprocuredforher.

TheSolemnRequiem Mass,atwhichHisLordshiptheMostRev.L.J. Goodypresided,wascelebratedbytheRev.A.MorahanwiththeRevs.J.Challis,G.CrocettiandJ.McNamara,asdeacon,subdeaconandmasterofceremonies,respectively.

VictorianGirlBasketballers ComingToDefendShield

OnSunday,August29,theVictorian CatholicWomen'sbasketballStateteam willarriveinPerth,withtheobjectofdefendingtheInterstateshield,symbolof Catholicbasketballsupremacy. andmembersofthelocal associationshouldnotmiss thegoldenopportunityto seebasketballatitsbest.

Lastyear,inMelbourne, theVictorianassociationwas hosttothreeotherStatesTasmania,SouthAustralia, andWesternAustralia-this beingthefirstcarnivalofits typetobestagedbyCatholicbasketballers.

Competitionwaskeen,butthestrongVictorian sideprovedtoogreatahurdlefortheotherStates;they wentthroughtheseriesundefeated,andsocarriedoff thebeautifulshield,speciallydesignedandpresented forperpetualcompetition.

WesternAustraliawas votedthenextbestState, andlocalgirlshavebeen busyformanymonths,takingcareofallthemanydetailsinvolvedininterstateentertaining.

HANOI,NorthVietnam,August12.-One hundredandeighteen priestsareheldprisoners bytheCommunistVietminh,accordingtomissionauthoritiesinVietnam.

Theirinformationisdelayed,perhapsincomplete. Itispossiblethatsomeof thesepriestsaredead.

TheGenevaagreement callsforthereleaseofall civilianaswellasmilitary prisonersbyAugust20.

Onehundredandtwo priest-prisonersareVietnamese;oneisaLaotian;15 areforeigners.Thirteenof theforeignpriestsare French,twoareBelgian. ThreeoftheFrenchwere servingasauxilarychaplains.Twoofthesewere missionariesintheDien BienPhuarea.Theyhad takenrefugeinthebesieged fortress,wheretheyassisted armychaplains.IntheVietminhareas, priestsnotimprisonedare restrictedintheirmovements.Theyareusuallyconfinedtoonevillage,sometimestojustthechurch premises.

areonlyobservers,notdelegates,hascausedconsiderablecomment.

Therehavebeentwoattacksinthelocalpresson thismatter,andmoreimportant,wehavelostconsiderableprestigewithall delegates,particularlythose ofAsia,becauseofit. I thinkitishighlydesirable,thatthenecessarynatioinal committeebesetupinAustralia,andthatitseekaffiliationwithWAYbefore thenextAssemblyisheld. Itmustberealisedthat mostofthecountriesin AsiaregardedAustraliaas farinadvanceofthemselveswhenitcomestoyouth work.Thelackofanationalcommitteegivesthe impressionthatwearemore backwardthanthey.

Sometwentyyearsago, towardstheendof1932,I wastoldonedaybythe Brotherwhosedutyitwas toattendtovisitors,that therewasapriestdownstairs askingtoseeme.

HeprovedtobetheRev. J.Walsh,C.SS.R.,whowas thengivingamissioninthe parishofDaceyville,the nextsuburbtoKensington, aboutamilefromthe SacredHeartMonastery.He saidthathehadcometo makearequest.

Missioner'sNeed

"Duringthelastfour years,"hebegan,"youhave beenansweringoverthe aireverytypeofquestion aboutreligioningeneralandtheCatholicChurchinparticularsenttoyoubyvariouslisteners."

Twoorthreemonths wentby,withtheidea pigeon-holedandmentally, labelled"ForLaterConsideration."Butitwasthe kindofideathatrefusesto remainpassive,andatlastI beganliterallytocreate sparemomentstodevoteto typing,sortingandclassifyingthevarioustopics dealtwithduringmyfirst fiveyearsoftheQuestion Boxsession.

Itwasonlytowardsthe endofthefollowingyear, 1933,thatabook-lengthcollectionof1588questionsand answerswasfinallycompletedandreadyforprinting.

"Iamconstantlyengaged ingivingmissions,andone thingtheworkhasimpresseduponmeishowbadly weneedsuchabooktoinducepeopletostudytheir religion.

Thethoughtofdoingsuch athinghadneverentered myheadpriortothissuggestionbyFatherWalsh, andmyfirstreactionwas: "Impossible!"ForIwas teachingtheologyandseveralothersubjectsinour Scholasticateatthetime; andwiththecurrentradio sessionstoberegularlyprepared,nottospeakofthe correspondenceinvolved withprospectiveconvertsin distantplacesandthepersonalinstructionofthose nearerathand,Icouldnot

hear,butwhatyoucan getintotheirhandstoread isofthegreatestimportance,whenhecameacross oneofthecopiesof"Radio Replies"whichMonsignor Hunthadbeendistributing inAmerica.

Oneday,shortlyafterthe publicationof"Radio Replies"inSydney,the 20,000tonsBritishship "Franconia,"filledwith Americantouristswhohad chartereditforaroundthe-worldcruise,steamed intoAucklandHarbour,to givethetravellersalookat NewZealand.

Onboard,aschaplainto thenumerousCatholics amongthepassengers,was theRightRev.Monsignor JohnJ.Hunt,ofDetroit, U.S.A.,whosetoutassoon astheshiphadberthedto payhisrespectstoHisLordshipBishopListon.Atthe Bishop'shousehiseyefell bychanceuponacopyof "RadioReplies."

Hepickeditup,read throughafewpassageshere andthere,andthenexclaimed:"Say,that'sthe.kindof

FatherCartywroteat onceforathousandcopies tobesenttohimselfforuse inhisownwork.Before verylonghewasasking foranotherthousand,and thenyetanother.

Buthefrettedoverthe delayingettingthemfrom sogreatadistance,andat lastwrotetoaskpermission toprintthebooklocallyin America,sayingthatitwas impossibletocopewiththe demandforitinanyother way.

Permissiongranted,heset toworkinatypicallyAmericanway.Everythingin theUnitedStates,ofcourse, isdoneonamuchbigger scalethanhere,forAmerica hasapopulationof150mil lions,whilstwehavebut eightmillions.

But,evenso,itwasastonishingtolearnthat FatherCartybeganby havingafirstprintingof 100,000copiesof"Radio Replies"runoffthepress, afterhavingrequested Bishop(thenMonsignor) FultonSheentowriteaprefaceforit,andhavingadded anintroductionbyhimself togetherwithcaptionson eachpagetocatchtheeye ofeverycasualopenerof thebook.Itwasissued underthetitleof"Radio Replies.ByFathersRumbleandCarty,"in1938.

ThefirstAmericaneditionwassosoondisposed of,withanother100,000runningthroughthemachines, thatFatherCartywroteto mein1939suggestingthat IshouldcometoAmerica, bringingwithmeallmanuscriptsaccumulatedsince 1934,whenthefirstAustralianeditionwasoriginally published,andthatIshould co-operatewithhimingettingoutasecondanddifferentvolume.

VisittoAmerica

InCanada,Englandand Ireland,asintheUnited States,thereisscarcelya presbyterywithoutthe threevolumesonitslibrary shelves.Theyarewell knowninSouthAfrica.

Oftheextraordinaryresultsofsowideadiffusion ofthebooks,asindicatedin lettersreceivedfromconvertsinthemostout-ofthe-wayplaces,andfrom priestsaboutyetotherconvertswhohavenotwritten themselves,itisnotpossible tospeakinthisbriefarticle.

SomehoworotherIgrewupfearingandhating theCatholicChurch.Whenwewereverysmall, wheneverwehadtogopastthebasilica,weranpast. ThefearandhatestayedwithmewhenIleftthe PlymouthBrethrenanddriftedintoAnglicanism. Theversionofitinmyhometown(inNewZealand) wasratherlow-churchandlion-and-unicornishbakers'breadfortheCommunionandasortofN.E positionforthecelebrant,andateverychoralservice, ifmymemoryiscorrect,theysangthenationalanthem.

Teachingfittedthesesymbols.Stilltherewas warmthandgenerosityandthoughIhaddriftedin, affectionandconvictionsooncame.Idecidedtogo intotheMinistry,andwenttoDunedintoprepare forit.Iwentthereanopinionatedliberal-protestant Anglican(theliberalslantIhadpickedupoutside theparishchurch)andranintothebeauty,wisdom, dignityandtraditionofthehigh-church.

AXIOMATICWRONGNESSWANES

WhileIwasshakingofftheliberalsubstitutefor Christianity(modernism,asitwasoddlycalled-it hadbeenmodernbeforethefirstwar),andslowly movingtowardswhatwespokeofsometimesas "prayer-bookCatholicism,"Idon'tthinkthattheidea thatRomemightberightevercrossedmymind.But theaxiomaticwrongnessofRomemusthavebeen tricklingaway.Icanhardlyhavebeensodullas nottoseethatsincethehigh-churchpointofview camesoclosetoCatholicism,Catholicismcouldn'tbe wrongaboutChristianitypalpably.

Imusthavehadsomeinklingthatdogmassuch asTransubstantiationwereintheirprinciplesolike theIncarnationitself-GodunderacreaturelyveilthatiftheyweregrossdistortionsofChristianity andutterlyincredible,asfightingProtestantismmaintained,itwouldbeveryhardtodefendtheIncarnationastrueandChristian.Iwas,withoutrealising it,onthewaytoseeingthatargumentsagainstCatholicismhavealogicinthemwhichishostileto Christianityaltogether,andthatthelogicofargumentsforChristianityleadstoCatholicism.Though itwasnotuntilIwasnearlyfinishedasanAnglican thatIsawthisclearly,animplicitapplicationofit wassoontofrightenmebadly.

IwentonceortwicetoBenediction(neverto Mass)andwasalittledisturbedbythepeople'sdeotionandbyasenseofthesupernatural,whichthe swiftLatin,theflickeringlights,theincenseandthe unearthlybeautyofplain-chantdidn'tseemtofully explain.

MENACEOFROMELOOMSUP

praisedSylvesterforhavingconductedtheFathers towardsthedivinelightbytheever-unerringteachingofhisSee.

Ifroze. IhadreadCypriansayingthatfaithlessnesscoluldneverhaveaccesstotheSeeofPeter andJeromeaskingthePopetodefinewhatheliked andhewouldreceiveit.Thiswasdifferent.This wasOrthodoxy(whichhadseparatedfromthePope tsecausehewasthePope)speakingagainstitself. And,"lexorandi,lexcredendi"(officialprayerindicatestheCanonofFaith),asweusedtosay,referring tothePrayerBook,whenotherpeoplesaidthatthere wasnoAnglicandoctrine,onlythedoctrineofAnglicans. Thenanotherthinghappened.Itispeculiarly necessaryforAnglo-Catholicapologetictobeableto putitsfingeronthecriteriaofCatholicity,whichshow thattheRoman,Greek,andAnglicancommunions are(andthe"Protestant"communionsarenot)Catholic.

HowistheTrueChurchtoberecognised?By the"FourMarks"-that'sthestandardhigh-church answer.WheretherearetheBible,theCreeds,the Sacraments,andtheApostolicMinistry,thereisthe CatholicChurch.Itisabsentwhereanyofthemis absent.

AnglicanIntoCatholic

AsIbegantounderstandthisIbegantoseewhat IhadthoughtwereadditionstotheFaithwereonly 'additions."TheChurchhaddonenoviolenceto the"ThouartPeter,etc.,"ininterpretingChrist's wordsasestablishingthePapacywithallitsprerogatives:andthedoctrineofMaryasthesecondEve, foretoldinGenesisandasearlyinChristianthought asyoucaretogoback,couldverywellcontainthe 6octrineofherImmaculateConception.

DOCTRINALCONFLICTUNSETTLABLE

Differentthingsworrydifferentpeople,andthis latterdoctrineIwasfindingharderto"reducetoantiquity"thanPapalInfallibility.Atapinch,though, Ithought,onemightjusttaketheChurch'swordfor it.thatitwasanimplicitpartoftheoncedelivered Faith.Thenquitesuddenlythedifficultybecame merelyacademic.

Iwasmadeadeaconattheendof1938,nearly, butnotquitea"Catholic"Anglican.Thelastreser'iationwentataclergyRetreatalittlelater.Itcan't havebeenmorethantwoorthreeweeksafterthe Retreatthat,withthesuddennessofasmackinthe face,themenaceofRomeloomedup.

Isawwithadreadfulclaritythatthesamesort ofargumentsaswewereusingfor"Catholicism"(i.e., forthecommonreligionwesupposedheldbyRome, Constantinople.andCanterbury),argumentsfrom unbrokendescent,numbersanduniversaldiffusion, fromtheimprobabilityofGodafterHispromises havinglettheChurchfallintoessentialerroruntil HerestoredthetruthinLuther,Wesley,andMrs. EllenWhite;Isawthatargumentsofthisverykind toldinfavourofCatholicism,andmorenaturally. becausetherewasnohintoffictionaboutitsunity.

Anditseemedtomethattherewasaverystrong presumptionthattheRomanChurchwassimplythe CatholicChurch-consequently,forme,now,theTrue Church-whenits400millionsareconsidered(God onthesideofthebigbattalions?-butthelightof Revelationwastolightentheworld,wasn'tit?),the faithfulnessandsacrificeofCatholicsasdemonstrattdbytheirschoolsalone,thewillingnessofsomany Catholicstodosomuchmorethanthey"had"to, theheroismofacelibateclergyandreligious,the saintsandmartyrs,theunityinfaith,andlastlythe factthatnoonedisputedwhetherthatChurchwas Catholic.

DIDROMECHANGEFAITH?

BycontrastthepresumptionthattheAnglican ChurchwasCatholicseemedweak,withtheequivocal historyattheReformation,itsemptyingchurches,the troubleitwashavingtokeepupevenamarried clergy,itsdoctrinaluncertainty,thefactthatnoend ofpeople,includingverymanyAnglicans,wereready todisputeAnglicanclaimstoCatholicity.

Yettherewasonething,Ithought,whichcancelledallthisout.Romecouldnotberightbecause itcontradicteditself.ItheldthattheFaithwasunchangeable.andithadchangedtheFaith.Ithad ?ddednewdogmas,notablethoseoftheImmaculate ConceptionandPapalInfallibility,whichwereneither primitivearticlesofbeliefnordeduciblefromprimitivearticlesofbelief.Bycuttingoffanyonewho rejectedthem(notbecausetheywerenottrue,but becausetheywerenew)itcutitselffromantiquity.

ORTHODOXYAGAINSTITSELF

IstayedanAnglican.Atanytimeduringthe nexttenyearsthatwouldhavebeenthemainreason why.Itsettledmeenough(notjustbyitself,but withothermoretrivialconsiderations)toletmebe priestedwithaclearconscience.Havingdecidedto stay,Istampeddownquestioningswheneverthey aroseandputupwiththeoccasionalfearsandblack glooms.Doubtsanddreadsbecamelessfrequent. AfterawhileIwasprettyhappy.

In1947Iwasmadesub-wardenofSt.John'sCollege,Auckland.Oneafternooninthemiddleofmy secondyearthere,Iwasinthecollegelibraryand pickedupabook-Ican'trememberthenameorwho itwasby-butitquotedaprayerusedintheGreek OrthodoxChurchontheeveofSt.Sylvester.(He wasPopeatthetimeoftheCouncilofNicaea.)It

Iwasre-readingthehistoryoftheDonatists 'hereticsofthefifthcentury).ThistimeInoticed whatIhadmissedbefore.TheyhadtheFourMarks. Andtheywere(byAnglicans)acknowledgedschismatics.IcouldnolongerfindanAnglicantestto distinguishaspuriousfromagenuineclaimantwith thename"Catholic."

FROMASHIFTEDPERSPECTIVE

Onedayearlyin1949Icouldn'twork,thinking ofthesethings,andalsojustthenspeciallypuzzled anddismayedatthedeterminationofAnglicanpeoplenottogotochurchandwonderinghow,iftheAnglicanChurchwasGod'sChurch,Hecouldlether lifedrainawaylikethis.AllatonceIknewIhad tolookfairandsquareattheissuebetweenusand theCatholicswithoutassumingthatsomehowwe mustberight.

Itwas,morethananythingelse,amatterofseeinghowdecisiveagainstthemassivepresumptionI acknowledgedinRome'sfavour,wastheobjectior thathadkeptmebacktenyearsearlier.Ilooked stthisobjection,theFaith"addedto,"lookedatitnot onlywithAnglicaneyes,butfromashiftedperspective,throughCatholiceyes.

NEWMANONDEVELOPMENT

Thereisanindissolubleconnectionbetweenthe dogmaoftheImmaculateConceptionandthevisions ofSt.BernadetteandthemiraclesatLourdes.It wasaboutayearsinceIhadbeenunabletodisbelievethem,thoughIhadmanagednottoaskmyself theirsignificance.Iaskeditnowandgottheanswer fromtheseventeenthcenturyAnglicanBishop,John Pearson.HewasspeakingofthemiraclesthatMoses didandsaid:"TheywhosawinhishandsGod'somnipotencycouldnotdoubtinhismouthGod'sveracity.Astheobjectionsbrokeup,theCatholicChurch shonealwaysmoresteadilythroughtheminselfauthenticatingmajesty.Butone'spasthasalongarm. PerhapsProtestantism(Imeansomeformofitother thantheAnglo-Catholic)hadthetruth.WhenI consideredthough,Icouldonlyseehalf-destroyed Christianity.Forsay,"ItiscertainthatthereisreNealedtruth"asChristianitydoes,andthenextword is:"aninfallibleandunambiguousauthoritytoteach it."

Theco-operationgiven totheparishpriestinthe pastwasthesurestguaranteethatheneedhave noapprehensionregarding theheavyliabilitythatwas incurredinordertoerect thesplendidgroupofparochialbuildings.

HisGracecongratulated Mr.R.Summerhayes,the achitect,onisbeautifuldesign.Itwasoriginaland modern.Eventhoughit departedfromthetraditional,itwasnonetheless veryeffective.

TheArchbishopalsocomplimentedthefirmofcontractors,Messrs.Harnett andHorner,andthetradesmenassociatedwiththem ontheexcellenceoftheir work.

Thepeoplehadajustifiableprideintheirparish andtheywereanxiousto makesacrificesandtoface sacrificesinordertohave buildingsworthyofthe parish,worthyoftheexcellentsiteonthemain highway,worthyofthe noblepurposesforwhich theywereerected,and worthyoftheirfaithand generosity.

Thequestionwouldbe asked,continuedHisGrace, whyspendsomuchmoney onbuildingthatchurch. Couldnotthemoneybe betterappliedinphilanthropicworkonbehalfof thepoor,theagedandthe

onthisnew FloreatParkChurchwasEfficientlycarriedoutby

infirm?Ifhismemoryservedhimright,onlyafew monthsagoinconnection withanothersimilarbuildingbeingerectedinthe samearea,thatquerywas raised.

Thatqueryrecalledasimilaronemadeatthe banquetgiventoOurLord atBethany,whenMary MagdalenanointedHisfeet withpreciousointment.

Inreply,HisGracesaid, hewouldmerelypointout thatthosewhoweregeneroustoGodandhelped,accordingtotheirmeans,in buildingtoHishonourand glory,werenottheclass whowereforgetfuloftheir obligationstothepoor,the sickandtheneedy.

Buttheyrememberedand tooktoheartwhatOurLord laiddownsoemphatically asthefirstandgreatest commandment.TheerectionofthatChurch,the Archbishopsaid,didnot springfromamotiveof vaingloryorvaindisplay.

Butitsprangfromafull andvividrealisationof whatthefirstCommandmentimplied.Itwasobediencetotheimperiouscall ofFaiththaturgedthemto givegenerously,likethe MagdalenofoldandtosurroundtheirDivineGueston

thealtarwiththebestand mostartisticattheirdisposal.

Inbuidingthechurch theyweregivinghonour andglorytoGod-anhonour andglorydemandedof them-andatthesametime theywerenotremissin thedischargeoftheirobligationstothepoor,sickand needy,astheCatholichospitals,orphanages,homesfor aged,andtheSt.Vincent dePaulsocietiesprovedso convincingly.

FromtheOldTestament theyknewhowcloselyGod associatedHimselfwiththe buildingoftheTemplein Jerusalem.Heblessedthe laboursandthesacrificeof Solomonandhispeople.He seemedtolayallnations andallnatureundertribute fortheworthyaccomplishmentofthenobleworkof Solomon.

Theywerebuildinga templetoGod,notsorich inmaterialsplendourbut nonethelessfarmoredearto Himinthatitwastobea shrinewhereinrealityHe wouldtakeupHisabodein theBlessedSacramentin thetabernacleonthealtar. Nothingwastoocostlyand nosacrificewastoogreat wherethehonourandglory ofGodwereconcerned.

ThefirstMassinthenew parishwasofferedinthe homeofMr.JackEdwards, at30Newry-street,onJune 15,1947.

Fromthenonuntilthe newschoolwasblessedand declaredopenbyHisGrace theArchbishoponNovember7,1948,twoMasses werecelebratedeachSundayandHolyDay,onein thetennispaviliononthe Boulevarde,andtheother intheStateschoolinGrantham-street.

Thesitewheretheschool andpresbyterynowstand wasacquiredfromMr.T. Dallamere,whoconducted adairythere,forthesum of£5,000.

Withinthebriefspaceof sevenmonthsaschoolwas built.Oneportionwasset asideasatemporarychurch andherethreeMasseswere celebratedeachSunday.

Thechargeoftheschool wasentrustedtotheBrigidineSisters,whocame eachdayfromtheirconvent inSubiaco.Thenunshave anenviablereputationboth insecularsubjectsandin religiousformation.

Inconclusion,HisGrace congratulatedMr.StanoCstellsonhisserviceabledesign,andthetradesmenassociatedwithhim,onthe highstandardofworkmanship.Consideringthesize ofthebuildingandthe natureofthework,theprice of£5,800wasindeedavery reasonableone.

Theblackmarblefacing ofthealtarishighlighted againstthewalnutpanelling oftheloftyreredos,theeggcratetopofwhichisa baldachinocarriedoutin blueandprimrose.

Themembers,oftenknown as"Josephites,"repudiate polygamy,denythatJoseph Smithevertaughtit,and assertthatBrighamYoung wasresponsibleforintroducingthedisgustingdoctrineofpluralwives.

Butthereisnotthe slightestdoubthistorically thatJosephSmithhimself proclaimedtherightand dutyofpolygamy.The "ReorganisedChurchof JesusChristoftheLatterDaySaints"claimstobethe truesuccessoroftheoriginalbody,andinadispute overpropertyin1894secur edacourtverdictto that' effect.The"Reorganised Church"hassome200congregations,with116,888 membersinall.

JosephSmith,aswehave seen,grewupinanatmosphereofProtestantrevivalism,anddeclaredthathe wasleftbewilderedbythe claimsandcounter-claims oftheconflictingsects.As somanybeforehim,he soughtasolutionbyabandoningallothersandsettingupaChurchofhis own-thusaddingonemore outcropofProtestantismto increasetheconfusionthat haddistressedhiminthe firstplace!

Butatleastwecansee thatMormonismisentirely, theresultofProtestantprinciplesofprivatejudgementoperatinginapure lyProtestantenvironment. JosephSmithcannotbesaid tohaverejectedCatholicismforthesimplereason thatheknewnothingwhateveraboutit.

NewDispensation

HismovementwasareactionagainsttheconfusionofProtestantism,and itwastoafundamentaltype ofProtestantism-theonly religionheknew-thathe addedtheBookofMormon andsomefurtherrevelationswhichheimagined hadbeengrantedtohimself.

"Nogeneralstatement willholdgoodforeveryone. Eachpersonmuststudyhis owncycle.Thismuch canbesaid,however:the gradualfluctuationbetweenhighandlowover almostsixweeksranges acrosslessthanhalfthe

itwillnotbeclearlyperceptiblefromdaytoday.
