Thebeautifulclubhouse, hecontinued,wasnot merelyabuilding.Itwas apracticalexpression,and theclimaxoftheidealcf St.Thomas'tennisclub.He hopedthatyoungboysand girlsmightmeetthereon commonground-opponents,perhaps,inagameof tennis,butaspartnersina life-longunionintheSacramentofMatrimony.
Thesupportingspeakers wereMessrs.P.Sullivan, G.Edwards,andB.O'Dea, thechairmanbeingMr.M. Sayers.Thespeecheswere followedbyseveralmusicalitems,afterwhichafternoonteawasserved.
MembersofSt.Thomas'tennisclub,Claremont,hadgiven onexampleofheroicunselfishness,saidtheRev.P.O'Mara whendeclaringopenthefinenewclubhouse,(above),buildby voluntaryeffort,onSundaylost. valuedat£2,000,andconveyedtotheclubthebest wishesofHisGracethe Archbishop.
Undertheguidanceof twotradesmen,thebulkof theworkwasdonebybusy beesofmembers.Itis builtontheblockoppositetheconventschool, AgeneralCommunionand breakfastwasheldonSundaymorning,August22,at which80clubandjunior memberswerepresent.
At3p.m.theopening ceremonywasperformed bytheRev.P.O'Mara,beforeacrowdof200people, whobravedtheinclement weather.

Lastyear,inMelbourne, theVictorianassociationwas hosttothreeotherStatesTasmania,SouthAustralia, andWesternAustralia-this beingthefirstcarnivalofits typetobestagedbyCatholicbasketballers.
Competitionwaskeen,butthestrongVictorian sideprovedtoogreatahurdlefortheotherStates;they wentthroughtheseriesundefeated,andsocarriedoff thebeautifulshield,speciallydesignedandpresented forperpetualcompetition.
WesternAustraliawas votedthenextbestState, andlocalgirlshavebeen busyformanymonths,takingcareofallthemanydetailsinvolvedininterstateentertaining.

HANOI,NorthVietnam,August12.-One hundredandeighteen priestsareheldprisoners bytheCommunistVietminh,accordingtomissionauthoritiesinVietnam.
Theirinformationisdelayed,perhapsincomplete. Itispossiblethatsomeof thesepriestsaredead.
TheGenevaagreement callsforthereleaseofall civilianaswellasmilitary prisonersbyAugust20.
Onehundredandtwo priest-prisonersareVietnamese;oneisaLaotian;15 areforeigners.Thirteenof theforeignpriestsare French,twoareBelgian. ThreeoftheFrenchwere servingasauxilarychaplains.Twoofthesewere missionariesintheDien BienPhuarea.Theyhad takenrefugeinthebesieged fortress,wheretheyassisted armychaplains.IntheVietminhareas, priestsnotimprisonedare restrictedintheirmovements.Theyareusuallyconfinedtoonevillage,sometimestojustthechurch premises.

areonlyobservers,notdelegates,hascausedconsiderablecomment.
Therehavebeentwoattacksinthelocalpresson thismatter,andmoreimportant,wehavelostconsiderableprestigewithall delegates,particularlythose ofAsia,becauseofit. I thinkitishighlydesirable,thatthenecessarynatioinal committeebesetupinAustralia,andthatitseekaffiliationwithWAYbefore thenextAssemblyisheld. Itmustberealisedthat mostofthecountriesin AsiaregardedAustraliaas farinadvanceofthemselveswhenitcomestoyouth work.Thelackofanationalcommitteegivesthe impressionthatwearemore backwardthanthey.

Manyideaswerevoiced astotheattitudeofgirlsas CatholicActionistsafter schoolandonwhether catechismlearnedatschool helpedthem. ThenextcombinedmeetingwillbeonSept.5.
ThelongsilenceoftheIndianBishopswasbrokenbystatementsfromHisEminenceValerianCardinalGracias,ArchbishopofBombay,andArchbishop JosephFernandes,ofDelhiandSimla.Bothscored asbaselessthepublicisedfearsthatCatholicshrines wouldsufferifGoaweretomergewithIndia.Earlier thisyearPrimeMinisterJawaharlalNehrupromised thatthelargelyCatholicpopulationofGoawouldnot sufferanyinfringementofitsreligiousrightsifthat areacameunderIndianrule."Weproposetomaintainthespecialculturalandreligiouspositionof Goa,"hesaid.ItisestimatedthathalftheGoan populationisCatholicandtheotherhalfHindu.

Onboard,aschaplainto thenumerousCatholics amongthepassengers,was theRightRev.Monsignor JohnJ.Hunt,ofDetroit, U.S.A.,whosetoutassoon astheshiphadberthedto payhisrespectstoHisLordshipBishopListon.Atthe Bishop'shousehiseyefell bychanceuponacopyof "RadioReplies."
Hepickeditup,read throughafewpassageshere andthere,andthenexclaimed:"Say,that'sthe.kindof

WhileIwasshakingofftheliberalsubstitutefor Christianity(modernism,asitwasoddlycalled-it hadbeenmodernbeforethefirstwar),andslowly movingtowardswhatwespokeofsometimesas "prayer-bookCatholicism,"Idon'tthinkthattheidea thatRomemightberightevercrossedmymind.But theaxiomaticwrongnessofRomemusthavebeen tricklingaway.Icanhardlyhavebeensodullas nottoseethatsincethehigh-churchpointofview camesoclosetoCatholicism,Catholicismcouldn'tbe wrongaboutChristianitypalpably.
Imusthavehadsomeinklingthatdogmassuch asTransubstantiationwereintheirprinciplesolike theIncarnationitself-GodunderacreaturelyveilthatiftheyweregrossdistortionsofChristianity andutterlyincredible,asfightingProtestantismmaintained,itwouldbeveryhardtodefendtheIncarnationastrueandChristian.Iwas,withoutrealising it,onthewaytoseeingthatargumentsagainstCatholicismhavealogicinthemwhichishostileto Christianityaltogether,andthatthelogicofargumentsforChristianityleadstoCatholicism.Though itwasnotuntilIwasnearlyfinishedasanAnglican thatIsawthisclearly,animplicitapplicationofit wassoontofrightenmebadly.

AsIbegantounderstandthisIbegantoseewhat IhadthoughtwereadditionstotheFaithwereonly 'additions."TheChurchhaddonenoviolenceto the"ThouartPeter,etc.,"ininterpretingChrist's wordsasestablishingthePapacywithallitsprerogatives:andthedoctrineofMaryasthesecondEve, foretoldinGenesisandasearlyinChristianthought asyoucaretogoback,couldverywellcontainthe 6octrineofherImmaculateConception.
DOCTRINALCONFLICTUNSETTLABLE
Differentthingsworrydifferentpeople,andthis latterdoctrineIwasfindingharderto"reducetoantiquity"thanPapalInfallibility.Atapinch,though, Ithought,onemightjusttaketheChurch'swordfor it.thatitwasanimplicitpartoftheoncedelivered Faith.Thenquitesuddenlythedifficultybecame merelyacademic.
Iwasmadeadeaconattheendof1938,nearly, butnotquitea"Catholic"Anglican.Thelastreser'iationwentataclergyRetreatalittlelater.Itcan't havebeenmorethantwoorthreeweeksafterthe Retreatthat,withthesuddennessofasmackinthe face,themenaceofRomeloomedup.
Isawwithadreadfulclaritythatthesamesort ofargumentsaswewereusingfor"Catholicism"(i.e., forthecommonreligionwesupposedheldbyRome, Constantinople.andCanterbury),argumentsfrom unbrokendescent,numbersanduniversaldiffusion, fromtheimprobabilityofGodafterHispromises havinglettheChurchfallintoessentialerroruntil HerestoredthetruthinLuther,Wesley,andMrs. EllenWhite;Isawthatargumentsofthisverykind toldinfavourofCatholicism,andmorenaturally. becausetherewasnohintoffictionaboutitsunity.
Anditseemedtomethattherewasaverystrong presumptionthattheRomanChurchwassimplythe CatholicChurch-consequently,forme,now,theTrue Church-whenits400millionsareconsidered(God onthesideofthebigbattalions?-butthelightof Revelationwastolightentheworld,wasn'tit?),the faithfulnessandsacrificeofCatholicsasdemonstrattdbytheirschoolsalone,thewillingnessofsomany Catholicstodosomuchmorethanthey"had"to, theheroismofacelibateclergyandreligious,the saintsandmartyrs,theunityinfaith,andlastlythe factthatnoonedisputedwhetherthatChurchwas Catholic.
DIDROMECHANGEFAITH?
BycontrastthepresumptionthattheAnglican ChurchwasCatholicseemedweak,withtheequivocal historyattheReformation,itsemptyingchurches,the troubleitwashavingtokeepupevenamarried clergy,itsdoctrinaluncertainty,thefactthatnoend ofpeople,includingverymanyAnglicans,wereready todisputeAnglicanclaimstoCatholicity.
Yettherewasonething,Ithought,whichcancelledallthisout.Romecouldnotberightbecause itcontradicteditself.ItheldthattheFaithwasunchangeable.andithadchangedtheFaith.Ithad ?ddednewdogmas,notablethoseoftheImmaculate ConceptionandPapalInfallibility,whichwereneither primitivearticlesofbeliefnordeduciblefromprimitivearticlesofbelief.Bycuttingoffanyonewho rejectedthem(notbecausetheywerenottrue,but becausetheywerenew)itcutitselffromantiquity.
ORTHODOXYAGAINSTITSELF
IstayedanAnglican.Atanytimeduringthe nexttenyearsthatwouldhavebeenthemainreason why.Itsettledmeenough(notjustbyitself,but withothermoretrivialconsiderations)toletmebe priestedwithaclearconscience.Havingdecidedto stay,Istampeddownquestioningswheneverthey aroseandputupwiththeoccasionalfearsandblack glooms.Doubtsanddreadsbecamelessfrequent. AfterawhileIwasprettyhappy.

NEWMANONDEVELOPMENT
Thereisanindissolubleconnectionbetweenthe dogmaoftheImmaculateConceptionandthevisions ofSt.BernadetteandthemiraclesatLourdes.It wasaboutayearsinceIhadbeenunabletodisbelievethem,thoughIhadmanagednottoaskmyself theirsignificance.Iaskeditnowandgottheanswer fromtheseventeenthcenturyAnglicanBishop,John Pearson.HewasspeakingofthemiraclesthatMoses didandsaid:"TheywhosawinhishandsGod'somnipotencycouldnotdoubtinhismouthGod'sveracity.Astheobjectionsbrokeup,theCatholicChurch shonealwaysmoresteadilythroughtheminselfauthenticatingmajesty.Butone'spasthasalongarm. PerhapsProtestantism(Imeansomeformofitother thantheAnglo-Catholic)hadthetruth.WhenI consideredthough,Icouldonlyseehalf-destroyed Christianity.Forsay,"ItiscertainthatthereisreNealedtruth"asChristianitydoes,andthenextword is:"aninfallibleandunambiguousauthoritytoteach it."

infirm?Ifhismemoryservedhimright,onlyafew monthsagoinconnection withanothersimilarbuildingbeingerectedinthe samearea,thatquerywas raised.
Thatqueryrecalledasimilaronemadeatthe banquetgiventoOurLord atBethany,whenMary MagdalenanointedHisfeet withpreciousointment.
Inreply,HisGracesaid, hewouldmerelypointout thatthosewhoweregeneroustoGodandhelped,accordingtotheirmeans,in buildingtoHishonourand glory,werenottheclass whowereforgetfuloftheir obligationstothepoor,the sickandtheneedy.
Buttheyrememberedand tooktoheartwhatOurLord laiddownsoemphatically asthefirstandgreatest commandment.TheerectionofthatChurch,the Archbishopsaid,didnot springfromamotiveof vaingloryorvaindisplay.

Amongthepriestsatthe openingceremonywerethe Rev.P.Gavin,P.P.,theRev. M.Ryan(Quairading),who madetheappeal,theRev. J.Boylen(Rockingham), theRev.W.Clery(Merredin),theRev.D.Lenihan (Cunderdin),andtheRev. J.O'Mahony(Wagin).
Mr.Perkins,M.L.A.,and thechairmanoftheRoad Boardwereamongthe speakersatthefunction.
HisGracetheArchbishopcomplimentedthepeopleontheircouragein undertakingsuchasizeable liability.Herecalledthat whenhevisitedthedistrict in1944heurgedthemto inaugurateafundsothat theycouldbuildwhenthe warwasover.
Atthattime,saidHis Grace,thefarmingcommunitywaspassingthrough aleanperiod.Priceswere lowandlabourwasshort. Theywereinclinedtodespair,butheadvisedthem toremainonthelandno matterwhatthesacrifice.
ForiftheNewOrderthat waspromisedafterthewar meantanythingitsurely shouldmeanthatthefarmerswouldreceivetherecognitionwhichhadbeendeniedthemsolong.Thank Godthatithadhappened, saidHisGrace,andfarmers nowenjoyedaperiodof greatprosperity.
JohnBrosnanwasinducted asthefirstparishpriest.It wasplacedunderthetitle andpatronageofOurLady ofVictories.
ThefirstMassinthenew parishwasofferedinthe homeofMr.JackEdwards, at30Newry-street,onJune 15,1947.
Fromthenonuntilthe newschoolwasblessedand declaredopenbyHisGrace theArchbishoponNovember7,1948,twoMasses werecelebratedeachSundayandHolyDay,onein thetennispaviliononthe Boulevarde,andtheother intheStateschoolinGrantham-street.
Thesitewheretheschool andpresbyterynowstand wasacquiredfromMr.T. Dallamere,whoconducted adairythere,forthesum of£5,000.
Withinthebriefspaceof sevenmonthsaschoolwas built.Oneportionwasset asideasatemporarychurch andherethreeMasseswere celebratedeachSunday.
Thechargeoftheschool wasentrustedtotheBrigidineSisters,whocame eachdayfromtheirconvent inSubiaco.Thenunshave anenviablereputationboth insecularsubjectsandin religiousformation.

Intheyearstocome, continuedHisGrace,those whowouldkneelonthose pewswouldholdthename ofthepresentgenerationin benediction.Theirmemorywouldbeperpetuated ineverybrickandtile andboardandnailofthat building.
Buttheirmemorywould befarmoreindeliblyperpetuatedinthefleshytables oftheheartsoffuturegenerationswhowouldthank themforthesacrificesthey madeandthetraditions theyestablished-traditions ofFaith,ofpiety,ordevo-

Tothemreligionwasthe opiumofthepeople,the Churchwasabartoprogress.Butthepeopleof Narembeenthoughtdifferently.Theirpolicywas tobuildupsymbolsof Christianity.Inbuilding thatchurchtheywerecompensatingforthewanton anddiabolicaldestruction ofchurchesbehindtheIron Curtain.
TheyweremakingaprofoundactoffaithinChristianitybecauseoftheirfirm convictions-andtheyhad thecourageoftheirconvictions-thatitwasonthe foundationofChristianity, andonthosefoundations alone,andnotonthefoundationsofCommunismor anarchy,thatnationswould bebroughttogetherinharmonyandpeacerestoredto atroubledworld.
Inconclusion,HisGrace congratulatedMr.StanoCstellsonhisserviceabledesign,andthetradesmenassociatedwithhim,onthe highstandardofworkmanship.Consideringthesize ofthebuildingandthe natureofthework,theprice of£5,800wasindeedavery reasonableone.

Ofthemanyunusual featuresincorporatedin thedesignoftheChurch ofOurLadyofVictories, FloreatPark,perhapsthe colourschemeisoutstanding.Thepre-stressedconcretearchesembodiedinachurch forthefirsttimeinAustraliaarepaintedblue,which harmonisespleasinglywith thelightsalmonbrick.Both arethrownintoreliefby theblackbutceiling.
Theblackmarblefacing ofthealtarishighlighted againstthewalnutpanelling oftheloftyreredos,theeggcratetopofwhichisa baldachinocarriedoutin blueandprimrose.
Until1949,thedistrictaboutBruce Rockcomprisedportionoftheparishesof MerredinandKondinin,withMasstwice monthly.OnMay8ofthatyearHisGrace dividedBruceRockoffasaseparateunit withtheRev.M.Delahuntyasfirstparish priest.
TheparishofBruceRock includesthedistrictsof Narembeen,Muntadgin,Mt. Walker,Kwolyn,Ardath, andPantapin. Thechurchtherewas builtbythelateRev.P. C.Smith,whenparishpriest ofMerredin.Aporchwas addedbytheV.Rev.Mgr. T.Lenihanin1940.
Thepresbytery,anold woodenresidence,was transferredfromanother areaandre-erectedbythe voluntarylaboursofparishioners. TheRev.P.GavinsucceededFatherDelahunty asparishpriest,andwasresponsibleforthebuilding ofthefinechurchatNarembeen.

In1833hehadbought somerollsofpapyrifrom apedlarofancientcurios namedChandler.Theserolls 'contained some really Egyptianhieroglyphicsand drawings.
In1912,longafterSmith's death,thesehieroglyphics weresubmittedtoeightoutstandingEgyptianscholars, whoalldeclaredthefigures torepresentordinaryEgyptianfuneralritesandthat theyhadnothingwhatever todowithAbraham.But JosephSmithwasabsolutelyignorantofEgyptian writingandcustoms.

Smallerstillisthe "ChurchofJesusChrist (Cutlerites),"foundedin 1853byAlpheusCutler,one ofSmith'soriginalelders, asaresultofwhathedeclaredtobeadirectcommissionfromGod.There arebut24membersto-day whostillbelieveinthatdirectcommission.
Finally,thereisthe "ChurchofJesusChrist (Bickertonites),"founded byWilliamBickertonat Greenock, Pennsylvania. BickertonremainedafollowerofBrighamYoung forbutayearortwoand then,disgustedbyBrigham Young'spolygamy,leftthe Utahfoundationandwent toPennsylvaniatosetup forhimself.

HisvarietyofMormonismhasabout1,550members,notaverypronouncedgrowthfromitsoriginin 1862! Theyliveinsome thirtysmallcommunities, eachwithitsownchurchbuilding.

But.theincreasinginvasionofUtahbythe"gentiles,"andbusiness-relationshipswiththem,are resultingingreatsocial changes;whilstthemore criticalspiritofthemodernagehassteadilyreducwhichheissuedworthlessedthenumberofconvertsto
ginatedsoonafterthedeath ofJosephSmith.
WhenBrighamYoungwas electedleader,aminority, protestedagainsthisappointment,declaringthat JosephSmith'sson,also namedJoseph,wasthe rightfulsuccessor,and,undertheleadershipofJoseph Smith,junr.,setupin1853 asanindependentChurch. Themembers,oftenknown as"Josephites,"repudiate polygamy,denythatJoseph Smithevertaughtit,and assertthatBrighamYoung wasresponsibleforintroducingthedisgustingdoctrineofpluralwives.
Butthereisnotthe slightestdoubthistorically thatJosephSmithhimself proclaimedtherightand dutyofpolygamy.The "ReorganisedChurchof JesusChristoftheLatterDaySaints"claimstobethe truesuccessoroftheoriginalbody,andinadispute overpropertyin1894secur edacourtverdictto that' effect.The"Reorganised Church"hassome200congregations,with116,888 membersinall.

"Youmaynothavenoticedthesepeaksanddips recuraboutthreeweeks apartinaconsistent rhythm,thelowsevenmore/ regularthanthepeaks.But theydo.Youcanchart thispatternandpredictit. Knowingyourcyclewill permityoutoanticipate "highs"and"lows"andto planworkorfunaccordingly.
Actually,acyclicpattern canbeseeninallnature,includinghumanaffairs.Understandingtheappropriatecycleisbasicinbusiness,weatherreporting, farmingandmedicaldiagnosis.Justasweknowthat the17yearlocuststhat buzzedaroundlastsummer willbebackagainin1970, sowecanreasonablypredictthatmaroonwillbea popularauto,colournext year(itspopularityfollows arhythmofapproximatelytenyears).Andwecan beprettysureyourwife willbewearingabustle againafter1970,following the105-yearcycleinthe shapeofwomen'sdresses.

Notoneofthesedisputingsectshasabetter-ora worse-claimthananyof theotherstorepresentgenuineMormonism.Allequallyfail,iftheBookofMormonitselfisafraud.But, sincenothingsucceedslike success,weshallbaseour studyofMormondoctrines mainlyonthoseoftheUtah ChurchofJesusChristof theLatter-DaySaints.
JosephSmith,aswehave seen,grewupinanatmosphereofProtestantrevivalism,anddeclaredthathe wasleftbewilderedbythe claimsandcounter-claims oftheconflictingsects.As somanybeforehim,he soughtasolutionbyabandoningallothersandsettingupaChurchofhis own-thusaddingonemore outcropofProtestantismto increasetheconfusionthat haddistressedhiminthe firstplace!
Butatleastwecansee thatMormonismisentirely, theresultofProtestantprinciplesofprivatejudgementoperatinginapure lyProtestantenvironment. JosephSmithcannotbesaid tohaverejectedCatholicismforthesimplereason thatheknewnothingwhateveraboutit.
NewDispensation
HismovementwasareactionagainsttheconfusionofProtestantism,and itwastoafundamentaltype ofProtestantism-theonly religionheknew-thathe addedtheBookofMormon andsomefurtherrevelationswhichheimagined hadbeengrantedtohimself.
"Nogeneralstatement willholdgoodforeveryone. Eachpersonmuststudyhis owncycle.Thismuch canbesaid,however:the gradualfluctuationbetweenhighandlowover almostsixweeksranges acrosslessthanhalfthe
itwillnotbeclearlyperceptiblefromdaytoday.
