THEPUBLICLIFE
ThisMarianYear,1954,probablymarksthenineteenthcentenaryofthedeathandassumptionintoHeavenoftheBlessed VirginMary,accordingtoaninterestingcalculationmadeby MarionA.Habig,O.F.M.,inthisarticlefrom"Columbia".
Thus,theFeastoftheAssumption,recentlyproclaimeda dogmaoftheFaith,hasthisyearanextraordinarysolemnity.AccordingtotraditionOurLadydiedandwasassumedintoHeaven attheageof72.
In1951,theRev.Damiano Lar?rato,anadvocateof theRomanCuria,published theresultsofhisresearches onthechronologyofthelife ofChristinasix-hundred pagevolume,entitledChronologiuChristi.
Accordingtohisfindings, December25isnotanarbitrarydateforChristmas, butisactuallythedayof theyearonwhichOurLord wasborninBethlehem.And theyearofChrist'sbirthhe definitelydeterminesas748 a.u.c.(afterthefoundingof thecityofRome),or6b.c.
Itwasonlyinthesixth centurythatthesystemof datingeventsfromthebirth ofChristwasintroduced; anditsinventor,Denisthe Small,aScythianresiding inRome, unfortunately madeanegregiousbhinder inhiscalculations.
Hemadetheyear754 a.u.c.thefirstyearofthe Christianera(1a.d.),whereasheshouldhaveplaced thebirthofChristinthe year748a.u.c.Hemissed thedateofChrist'sbirth, therefore,bysixyears;and toindicatethenumberof yearswhichhaveelapsed sincethecomingoftheSaviouronthisearthwemust nowaddsixyearstothe currentyear.Thus,1954,is really1960a.d.
DenistheSmall'smistake isevidentfromtheproved factthatHeroddiedin750 a.u.c.(30March),theyear correspondingto4b.c.in oursystemofcountingthe yearsoftheChristianera; andnotonlywasChrist bornbeforeHerod'sdeath, butalsothemassacreofthe Innocents,whoweretwo yearsoldandunder,and theflightoftheHolyFamilytoEgypthadtaken placebeforethatevent.

Thefirsttorecordthe PresentationofMaryinthe TemplewasSt.Evodius, whoprecededSt.Ignatius asBishopofAntioch;he wasacontemporaryof Maryandperhapsoneof theseventydisciplesofOur Lord.
