Metz,-France,July26 (NC)-Anunusualmissionarycampaignwascarriedon duringJulyinnorth-eastern France,aspriestsandlaymen travelledabouttheregion livinginwagons.

ThecampaignwasoriginizedbytheSonsofCharity CongregationwiththecooperationofBishopJoseph HeintzofMetz.

Some200younglaymen andlaywomenfromallparts ofthecountry-students, seminarians,nurses,farmers andworkers-answeredthe requestoftheSonsofCharityforassistance,givingup theirvacationstotakepart inthemission.

Theyvisitedhomes,distributedCatholicliterature andaidedthepriestsinother ways.Nineteamswereformed,eachheadedbythr priests.

BishopTrochta,apopular 49-year-old Salesian, was "banished"fromhisdioceseby thePraguegovernmentjusttwo yearsagoanddetainedin_an unknownplace.

Theprelatespentseveral yearsinaNaziconcentration campduringWorldWarII.He wasliberatedfromthenotoriousDachaucampbyAmerican troopsshortlybeforetheend ofthewar.

ThesentencingofBishop Trochtamarksthefirsttimein threeandone-halfyearsthat thePragueregimehasgone totheextentof"trying"and formallyimposing a prison termonamemberoftheHierarchy.

Thelastprevioussuchtrial wasinJanuary,1951,when twoSlovakBishopsweresentencedtolifeimprisonmentand anotherto24yearsinprison.

Sincethattimetheregime has"banished"anumberof Bishops,includingArchbishop JosephBeranofPrague,buthad notdaredgothroughthetravestyofa"trial."

"Time"commented:" tinyCambodia,with itssuccessfullast-minutedemands,haddemonstratedtotheworldthattheCommunistsarenotirresistible,thatstubborncouragestillcounts."Cambodia'svictoryineffectmeansthatthetwoStates, geographicallyintegralandfree,maybuilduptheir armedforcesfordefence,withforeignhelp,ifthey wish,andthatbothmaycallforforeignmilitaryassistanceiftheythinktheirsecurityisthreatened. WhatimpressedmemostaboutMr.Menzies' wordswashisapparentrealisationofthetrue,inner significanceofCommunismandhisappealtoAsiatics was,therefore,fromtherightmotives.Hepointedoutthat"Communistsareconfessedandclaimantmaterialists indifferenttoallmoralandspiritualconsiderations."Heveryrightlydecriedthe conflictofto-dayasrepresentedastheconflictbetweentwoeconomicsystems."Itisdesperatelyimportantthattheworldshouldseethisasamoral contest-abattleforthespiritofman."

AsiansDespiseMaterialisticColonialism

InseekingAsiansupportforSEATO.thePrime MinistermadeadirectappealtoAsianreligiousfeeling.Hereferredtq"conceptionsoftherightsofman inherentinthegenuinely-heldreligionsoftheworld." ThesehecontrastedwiththeCommunists'"callousindifferencetoallmoralandspiritualconsiderations."

ByemphasingthehereticalnatureofMarxism whichhascausedittoinvertallthesocial,political andculturalrealitiesuponwhichWesterncivilisationisbuilt,Mr.Menzieshasshownrealismofahigh orderandonewhichwillbecompellingtotheAsian nationswhichhaveonlycontemptforthematerialisticcolonialismofEurope.

ItisnotenoughtoplugdemocracyasanalternativewayoflifetoCommunism.Forathome,democracyhastendedtobeidentifiedwiththeCapitalistsystemofeconomics,inaword,withinjusticeproceedingfromminoritycontrolofwealth.Abroad,democracyhasstoodforcolonialoppression,anduntil veryrecenttimesthathasbeenapoliticalreality,especiallyinAsia.

IslamMayProveStumblingBlock

Ity FrancaGilbert wereeducatedinsecularschools.Theoddsarevery longthattheparentsarewithoutreligionofanykind. Eveniftheystillliveinthelingeringtraditionof someChristiansect,theirchildrenwhenexposedto theconspiratorialsilenceofsecularismwillreadily loseeventhatremnant.

Nomistakeshouldbemadeaboutthesecularsystemofeducation,foritisthesepticfocusofourtroubles.Itwassetupatatimewhenreligiousinfluences hadgeneralsway,eveninpubliclife.InapredominantlyProtestantsociety,Protestantismwasalive andactive.FamilylifecentredabouttheBible.But thesecularschoolverysoonsappedthisvitalinfluence,andintwogenerationstheProtestantchurches werecomplainingaboutemptypews.Astranger comingintoourmidstcouldneverdeducefromour publicinstitutionsthatthiswasaChristianland.For thebasicChristiantruthshadceasedtobeaformative,andwerescarcelyevenaleavening,influence insociety. Bycontrast,theCatholics,whohadmaintained theirownschoolsatgreatandprogressivesacrifice.

Theworldconflictto-dayhasnomoreplaceforneutralsthanithasforliberals.Fortheissue,being betweengoodandevil,whoeverisnotwithusis againstus.Thereisonlyblackandwhite-noroom forpastels.

WhoWillGuardtheChineseBorder?

Soitisthatevenbeforethetrucecommissionbeginsitstask,thetermsofthearmisticearebeingviolatedbytheCommunists.Themilitaryagreement providesthat"personswhowishtoleaveonezone foranotherwillbeauthorisedtodoso."Section eightofthefinaldeclarationcallsforthestrictestapplicationofthisprovision.YetthedailyPresstells oftheVietminhemployingwomenandchildrento blocktheroads.Privatenewssourcesdeclarethat theconditionisnotobservedfor75percent.ofthe populationinthenorthernzoneofVietminh.This, ofcourse,shouldsurprisenoone,forthefaithfulare stillboundandthefaithlessstillfree.
