"Perplexed".Mosman Park,sendsalongletter whichwecanfairlyboil downtothefollowingquestion:DoesnotSt.Matthew (chap.19,v.9)recordOur Lordasallowingdivorce forunfaithfulness?

R.:No.Tounderstand thispassagewemustrefer ittoitscontext.Thequestion,youremember,wasput toOurLordbythePharisees:"Isitrightforaman toputawayhiswife,for whatevercause?"Thisnis adisputedmatteramongthe Pharisees.Oneschoolheld thatamanmightdivorce hiswifeforadulteryonly; anotherandmorelaxschool taughtthatdivorcewasallowablefortrivialreasons, "whatevercause."Inboth casesremarriagewasallowed.

True,Moseshadallowed them-not "commanded" themasthePhariseeshad claimed-divorceforadultery.Itwasatemporary concessionbecause"ofthe hardnessoftheirhearts,"ie. theexistingpracticewas toleratedbyGodfora time.

Christnowremindsthem thatitwasnotsofromthe beginning;Heremindsthem ofGenesis,chapter2,where beforetheMosaicconcessionmarriagewasalifelongunionwhich"noman canputasunder."

DominantPassage

Thediscipleswereso startled, soperplexed, and theysoappreciatedthegra- vityofwhatOurLordhad repliedtothePharisees, thattheycametoHimby themselvesinthehouseand askedHimfurtheraboutit. ExplainBibleTextsabout"Brothers"

"Puzzledbeliever,"MidlandJunction,writes:"Isit true,asIhaveread,that OurLordhadbrothersand sisters.Ifnot,howdoyouexplainthefrequentusein theNewTestamentofthe term"brethrenofthe Lord?"

R.:Thereisnotascrapof truthintheassertion.We explaintheterm"brethren" intheNewTestamentinthe samewayasitwasobviouslymeantintheOld Testament,namelytosignifycousinsorfellowclansmen.NeitherHebrew norAramaichadaspecial wordtosignifycousin; theyusedeithertheword, "ah"(brother)oracircumlocutionsuchas"sonof uncle"or"sonofthe brotherofthemother." (Thelatinwordforbrother, "frater,"originallyhadthis widemeaningalso).

Toavoidclumsycircumlocutions,particularlywhere thecousinswouldbesons ofdifferentunclesand aunts,andwheretherefore ifyouwishedtobethoroughlyexactyouwould havetowriteasuccession of"sonofthebrotherof themother"and"daughter ofthesisterofthefather" tillyouhadthoroughlyexasperatedyourreader-to avoidthis,theword"brethren"wasusedasaconvenienttermtocovertheoffspringofseveralunclesand aunts.

ClearEvidences

Youwillfinddozensof examplesofthiswider meaningof"brethren"in theOldTestament.Inthe bookofGenesis,forinstance,Abraham'snephew Lotiscalledhis"brother"; Jacobiscalledthe"brother" ofhis EleazaruncleLaban.Again, hasnosons;yethis daughtersmarrytheir "brothers"-andsoon.

ComingtothecaseofOur Lord,wehavestrongScrip- turalevidencethatHewas theonlysonofMary.None certainlyprecededHim,for Marytells Annunciation:theangelatthe "Howcan thisbedone,becauseI knownotman?"Noris thereanyevidencethat anyfollowed.IntheaccountofthefindingofOur Lordinthetemple,forexample,itisclearthatHeis heronlychild.And,later, totheinhabitantsofNazareth-whoshouldknow best-Heisknowninan exclusivewayas"theSon ofMary"(Mark6/3).

Itissignificantthatthis titleisreservedtoHim aloneintheGospels;though othersarereferredtoasHis "brethren,"theyarenever referredtoassonsofMary. Anotherstrongindication isthefactthatwhendying onthecross,ChristOur LordentrustedHisMother totheApostleSt.John.

Itisinconceivablethat Hewouldhavemadethis provisionforHisMotherif His"brethren,"ofwhomat leastfour-James,Joseph, SimonandJude-werealive atthetime,wereHisnaturalbrothersorhalfbrothers?

Twoobjectionshave sometimesbeenbrought againstthisview.Thefirst isSt.Matthew'stext"and he(Joseph)knewhernot

scureverse9ofSt.Matthew's19thchapter,whether thatversebereadasinour translationorinaccordance withthoseGreekmanuscriptswhichgiveitthe samewordsasinthe SermonontheMount,St. Matthew5/32.

If,ascertaincriticscontend,thewordsofSt.Matthewarepatientofdifferentinterpretations,that interpretationwhichisin accordwithSt.MarkspokenbyOurLordwith theexpresspurposeofdeterminingtheirmeaningmustbetherightone.In otherwords,throughoutthe NewTestament,including St.Matthew19/9,OurLord rejecteddivorceonthe groundofanunfaithful partner.

tillshehadbroughtforthherfirst-bornson."Butthe word"till"or"until"does notimplythatheknewher afterwards.

Manyinstancescouldbe quotedfromtheOldTestamentwheretheword "until"doesnotimplythe futureForinstance: "Michol, thedaughterof Saulhadnochilduntilthe dayofherdeath"merely meansthatshehadno childthenorafterwards.

Oragain,togivejustone furtherexampleoutof many,whentheMaccabees offeredsacrifice"because notoneofthemwasslain tilltheyhadreturnedin peace"doesnotimplythat anyofthemwereslainafterwards.

HebrewCustom

But,youmayurge,what abouttheword"first-born?" Doesitnotimplythatother childrenfollowed?Again, no.Thefirstmalechildofa marriagewascalledthe "first-born"immediatelyafteritsbirth,anditretained thenameevenifitremainedtheonlychild.Asa matteroffact,someofthe bestGreekmanuscripts omittheword"first-born". Anyway,itismerelyamatterofunderstandingHebrew customsandHebrewways ofspeech.

Ourownlanguageisfull oftrapsfortheunwaryforeigner.Evenasimple wordwherethereisnotrap couldcauseadifficulty, thoughonlyanapparent one.PrinceCharlesiscalled the"heir"tothethroneof Britain.Heirmeanseldest son.Doesthatnecessarily implythathehasyounger brothers?

Itisallaquestionof languageusage.Inthecase inpoint, languageusage agreeswiththeoverwhelmingtraditionthroughouthistorythatJesuswasthe onlySonofHismother Mary.Toassertthecontrary isaspoorinscholarshipas itisirreverent.
