Australia'sFutureDependsOn HavingFullChristianPolicy

SpeakingattheNewmansocietycamprecently,theRev.J.ChallissaidhebelievedthatUniversitystudiesandtheUniversityapostolatewereofthegreatestimportancefortheChurchto-day,becauseitseemedthatthefundamentalissues,whichwoulddecide thefateofourcivilisationwouldbefoughtoutintheuniversities oftheWesternworld.

Itwasalessonhehad learnedfromanextensive readingoftheworksof thepatronofthesociety, CardinalNewman, said FatherChallis.

CardinalNewman's teachingswereto-daythe subjectofintensivestudy incontinentaluniversities, becauseitwaswidelyappreciatedthatNewman's insightintothemental habitsofmodernman wouldhelptofindcommongroundwithphilosophersandthinkersin theuniversities.

'

Summarisingthepurposeofthecamplectures FatherChallissaidthey hadputbeforethestudentsafull,Christian programmeforthefuture developmentofAustralia: afullprogramme-every aspectofthepolitical, social, industrialand culturallifeofour countryhadbeenincluded; aChristianprogrammenamely, anapplicationof thesocialteachingsof theChurchtotheconcrete, historicalcircumstancesoftheAustralian scene.

TeachingIntegrated

Inotherwords,they wantedtoseeAustralia andAustralia'snational policiesastheChurch seesthem-toseeAustraliathroughtheeyesof thebishopsoftheChurch.

Inrecentyears,the bishops,withtheco-operationandadviceofskilledsociologists,economists,industrialists,tradeunion officials,expertsonforeign affairsandagricultural experts,hadworkedto applytheprinciplesof socialjusticeenunciated bythePopes,totheparticularconditionsofAustraliaandtomapouta programmeforAustralia's developmentaccordingto thoseChristianprinciples.

applytheprinciplesof socialjusticetothesocial conditionsofAustralia. It wasimportanttonotethat anysuchprogrammeas that, whileitcouldrightlybecalledaChristian programme, wasnotofficialCatholicteaching; exceptwhereChristian principlesweredirectly involved, asintheexamplescited, itcouldnotbe thesubjectofofficialstatementsbytheBishops.

However, thosenational policieshadtheapprobationoftheBishopswhich guaranteedthattheywere inharmonywiththe socialteachingsofthe Church.

InfluentialSection

FatherChallissaidhe wishedtoexplainwhy Universitygraduatesand undergraduatesshouldbe familiarwiththatprogramme.

Firstly, asintelligent andenlightenendCatholics theyshouldbefamiliar withthesocialteachings oftheChurchandtheeffortsthatwerebeingmade toimplementthem.

Secondly,asuniversity studentstheyhadawonderfulopportunitytoassistintheimplementation ofthatprogramme."I wouldsaythattheimplementationofthisChristian programme-orofanynationalpolicyforthatmatter-dependstoalargeex-1 tentonitsbeingpropagatedandacceptedintheuniversitiesandcarriedby graduatesfromouruniversitiesintopubliclife,"said FatherChallis.

Christianapproachtothe economic, social, political andindustrialproblemsof Australia, theywouldcarry thatsameattitudefromthe universityintopubliclife andtheywouldbeinstrumentalincarryingintoeffecttheChristianprogrammeoutlinedbythe BishopsoftheChurch.

Australia'sforeignpolicy wasofthegreatestimportancetodaybecausemore thaneverAustralia'svery survivaldependedonher adoptingarealisticattitude ininternationalaffairs.

Theleadershipofthe Westernnationsseemedto dependonfournationsin particular;theUnited States,Germany,Australia and,toalesserextent, Spain.

TheUnitedStateswasthe onlyworldpowercapable ofgivinganeffectiveand decisiveleadintheinternationalsphere;namely,in theUnitedNationsandin theworld-widefightagainst internationalCommunism.

couldbeoutlinedasfollows:

1.Australiashouldgive thefullestsupporttoAmericaninternationalpolicy. AustraliashouldsupportAmericaattheUnitedNations, andAustraliashould havesupportedAmericato thefullattheGenevaConferenceinsteadoffollowing theBritishlineofappeasement.

Australiashouldsupport theAmericanplanforan AsianDefenceCommunity; infact,Australiashould havetakentheleadinsuggestingandformingsucha pact.ArchbishopMannix saidinMelbournetheother day,"ouronlyhopeisin maintaininggoodrelations withtheUnitedStatesof America.Ifwedothat thereishopethatAustralia willbesavedfromdisaster, butifwelistentotheappeasersIthinkthefateof Australiawillbethefate ofPoland,Chinaandthe rest."

Inotherwords, theyought torealizethattheirmembershipoftheBritishCommonwealthandtheirtraditionaltieswithBritaindid notbindthemtofollow Britishpolicy.Therewas verylittleincommonbetweentheBritishattitude toAsia, whichwassimply amatterofkeepingopen avenuesfortrade, andthe Australianapproachwhich wasacaseofselfpreservation.
