When,in1726,JohnWesleyformedhis"HolyClub" atOxford,oneofhisstrict ruleshadbeenthatofregularweeklyCommunion accordingtoAnglicanrites. AfterhisMoravianconversionin1738,however,he tooktoopen-airpreaching; andofnecessityhisrevival meetingshadtobe"nonsacramental."

Ferventsermons,extemporeprayer,andstirring hymnsweretheorderof theday.ButWesleynever regardedhisopen-airservicesasprovidingallthe needsofpublicworship. Heassumedthathisconvertswouldalsoattend SundayworshipinAnglican parishchurches;andhe urgedthem,aboveall,to receiveHolyCommunion, the"supremeexpressionof Christianfellowship."

Buthis"Methodists"were notwelcomedtoCommunion bytheorthodoxAnglican clergy.Moreover,theyregardedtheirrevivalmeetingsandstudy-classdevotionasquitesufficientin themselves.

TheHymnBookofthe Societybecametheirchief bookofdevotion,andthey becamea"singing"and prayingpeople,withless andlessattractionforritual andliturgy.

WesleyhimselfeverretainedtheAnglicanLiturgy inaccordancewithhisduty asanAnglcanclergyman, andinsisteduponitsretention.Buthisfollowershad littleideaofitsimportance. Itistruethat,obsessed bytheideaof"personal conversion,"Wesleyomitted toinstructhisfollowers withsufficientcareinother mattershethoughtessential;butmodernMethodists donotstreesto-dayeven theexperienceofconversion asWesleydid.Forthem, theideaof"fellowship"has becometheall-important consideration.

HadhebeenCatholic MethodistChurches,too, havebecomenotonlynonliturgical,butanti-liturgical. JohnWesley'sown"ritualism"wouldhavebeenintolerableintheireyes.Their theoryofordinationisradicallydifferentfromhis.

HeinsistedonthepracticeofweeklyCommunion. Sincehisdeath,Methodists haveprofoundlymodified theirbehaviour,andmany admitthatHolyCommunionmeanslittleornothingtothem.
