Particularlyinteresting amongthepoemsshechose werethoseofCliveSansom,anEnglishmanwho hasmadehishomeinTasmania.Alargeandappreciativeaudienceapproved herchoiceandenjoyedher presentation.

Theproducerof"The WaxenMan,"Mrs.Dora Bulbeck,hasbeenasked topresenttheplayina Sundaynightconcertatthe RepertoryTheatre.

Itwillprovideonopportunityforthosewho wereunabletoseethe award-winningplayduring theDramaFestival.

Thispartoftheprocessioncontinuedonintothe SanctuarywheretheQueen reverentlyplacedthe crownonOurLady'sstatue.

AftertheRosaryhad beenrecitaiibytheRev.J. McGrath,MonsignorByrne enrolledeightaspirants, eachreceivingthewhite cloakofthesodalityand nineChildrenofMaryreceivedthebluecloakof OurLady'sSodality. Arrangementswerein handtomakethefeastof theAssumption,onAugust 15,apublicmanifestation ofthegreatloveandhonourinwhichCatholicshold theMotherofGod.The co-operationofotherparisheswassoughtinmaking theoccasionamemorable oneintheMarianYear.

PublicDevotion

FatherLynchsaidthat astheMarianYearprogressed,therewasevident agreaterinterestinpublic devotiontoOurLady.That wasonlyinaccordancewith theHolyFather'swishes. Therewas,however,room forastillgreaterdisplay ofpublicveneration,asa meansofmaking,notonly Catholics,butnon-Catholics,too,awareofOur Lady'sposition.

Signswerenotwanting, hesaid,atthemomentthat theinfluenceofMary'sinterventioninworldaffairs wasbeginningtobefelt. Thatpowerandinfluence waseverywhereevident, too,inthemanymiraclesof gracethattheworldhad receivedduringMarian Year.

TheIndiancomponentintheKoreanArmistice Commissionbecameconvincedofthetruenatureof theChineseRedsseeminglyagainstitswill.More recentlyMr.NehrucompelledtheAmericanstomake adetourof3,000milesinflyingbadly-neededmilitarysuppliestoIndo-China,becausehewouldnot permitthemtoflyacrossIndianterritory.

Intherapidly-developingsituationinEastern AsiabetweenCommunistsanddemocratsMr.Nehru hastriedhardtomaintainhisbalanceonthefence. Byeducationandupbringingheleansnaturallyto thedemocraticconceptoflife.Butthat,intheminds ofmillionsofAsians,isnecessarilyboundupwith colonialideaswhichopposetheirnascentnationalism.

Ontheotherhand,Chinahasseizedfromhim theinitiativeastheleaderofAsianaspirations,and ChinaonlystandsbythegraceofMoscow,whois anuncomfortablynearandmenacingneighbour.

Nehruisbesetwithasmany,ifnotmore,problemsthanisChina,withthenotableexceptionofaggressivecolonialaims.ButheshareswithChina andIndonesiathemystifyingambitiontoaddtoburdenswithwhichheisalreadyunabletocope.

MouthsFull,butReachingForMore

Therootproblemsforalloftheseincipientnations,noneofwhichhasaseparateexistenceofadecade'sstanding,wouldbe,Ishouldimagine,national unity,stablegovernment,andinternalsecurity.InsteadofthatwefindChinaeagerforforeignadventuresinKorea,Indo-China,andbeyond.Indonesia, withhugeareasoftheRepublicseethingwithdiscontentandsomeinopenrebellion,aimstohave moreterritoryattheexpenseoftheDutchandofAustraliansecurity.

IhavepreviouslydescribedNehruastheBenes ofAsia.Heistryingtoremainaliberalinaworld whereliberalshavenomoreplacethandinosaursand littlemorereality.Butbecauseheiswhatheis,he isthedarlingofthewoolly-mindedPressevenas Beneswas.Heispicturedforusamystical,introvertedmanofpeace.ButtherealNehruhasteeth andheisbeginningtoshowthem.Theattitudeof theIndianGovernmenttowardstheforeignmissions 'inthatcountryisobscuredbyaplethoraofconfused statementswhichpassforsubtlety.DespitetherepeatedassurancesofNehruwhichtendtosoftenthe harshutterancesofotherCabinetMinisters,thereis everyreasonforapprehensionthattheworkofthe ChurchinIndiamaysoonsuffercripplingblows.

Moreover,sincetheBritishquittedthesubcontinentin1947,therehasbeenmountingpressure togettheFrenchoutofPondicherry,Karikal,Mahe andYanoan;andthePortugueseoutofGoa,Diuand Damao,whicharetheremnantsofthesub-continent stillunderEuropeancontrol.

MeanwhilethefirstdefensiveblowagainstCommunismhasbeeninitiatedintheAmericansub-continent.LastFebruarytheConimunistPartyofBrazil,ideologicalleaderofRedsthroughoutLatinAmerica,madeanopencalltoviolentrevolution.Itwas firstheededinGuatemalawherePresidentJacobo ArbenzGuzmanswasbeingrunbytheReds.

Anti-RedRevoltWillBeBeaconofHope.

Afewweeksagohebeganimportingarmsona reallylargescaleuntiltheAmericanswerecompelledtoflysimilarsuppliestohisalarmedneighbours-HondurasandSalvador.Atthesametime anenquirywasafootinneighbouringBritishHondurasregardingthenatureandaimsofthePeople's UnitedPartywhichwerea"moral"forvictoryin thedelayedelections.

ThemilitarysituationisinfluxinGuatemale, bueRedreactionsareamusing.Tass,theofficialSoviet newsagency,isconvulsedwithsympathyat"this openviolationofthelibertyandindependenceofthe Guatemalanpeople."Totheburningindignationof theSovietdelegateatUNO,theAmericansbluntly replied:"Stayoutofthishemisphereanddon'ttry yourplansandconspiraciesoverhere."Itistime someonespoketotheSovietinthoseterms,anditis devoutlytobehopedthattheGuatemalanforeignadministrationwillbesoonoverthrown.Itwillbea beaconofhopetooppressedpeopleseverywhere.

WhatWeDon'tKnow

Here,then,isamanwith hiswillfixedirrevocably againstGod.Whatfollows?Inthefirstplacehe hasrebelledagainsthis Maker,hassinnedandhas notrepented:justicedemandsthathebepunished. InhellhereceivespunishmentfromGod;thatthere ispunishment,andthatit isgreat,weknow;buthow greatandwhetherornotit isunrelaxingwedonot know.

Themainpunishment, however,isnotfromtheexternalagentwhichOur Lordhascalled"fire,"but fromman'sownfreeseparationfromGod.Man's naturewasmadeforGod, andafterdeaththesoul seesthatfactwithblinding clarity.Nowwhenweare deprivedofsomethingthat ournatureneedswesuffer.

"Perhaps,"youmaysay, -"butthatdoesnotanswer theobjectiontotheeternity ofhell.Canreasonalone demonstratethathellought tobeunending?"Yes. Allowmetopresumethat Mr.Nicholsadmits-asindeedhedoes-anunending lifetocome;alsofreedom ofman'swillwherelyheis morallyresponsibleforhis actionsandthereforefor hisfuturedestiny. Deathclosesthefirst periodofman'slife,the periodoftestingandtrial, anditisdecisiveforallthat istocome.Thedecisivefactorisman'sfreewill.Duringlifeonearththereisin mostmenagooddealof fluctuation,andinallmen atleastthepossibilityof fluctuating.Atonemoment thewillissettowardsGod. Thencomesgravesinand thewillissettowardsself andawayfromGod.With repentanceandtruesorrow,thewillisturnedagain toGod.Andsoitgoeson.

Butwithdeaththefluctuationsofthewillare over;ithaschosenfinally andwillnotchange.Itis eitherfixedtowardsGodor fixedawayfromGod:that istosaymaneitherloves Godwithalovethatwill abideforeverorhatesGod withahatredequallyabiding.Intheonecasehewill spendeternitywithGod.In theothercasehewillspend eternityapartfromGodandthatisthe'essenceof Hell,separationfromGod.

Youmaycounterthat realhatredofGodisvery rare.ExplicithatredofGod mayberarebutthereisa formofself-lovethatis equivalenttoit.Thusaman mightgothroughlifeconsciouslyignoringGod-and thereforenothatingHim explicitly-butbuildingup suchaloveofselfthathe hasonlytobeconfronted withGodtohateHim.

Afterdeath,Godcannot beignored:andthenlove ofselfwillbringtothe

Howdidhejustifyhimselfinthis?Hefellback uponavaguetheoryofthe "ChurchInvisible."He viewedtheAnglicanChurch asavisiblelegalandhuman organisationonly.Forhim, theChurchofEnglandwas alegalestablishment,so that,indisobeyingthe Bishops,hewasviolating legalauthorityonly,and notspiritualauthority.

Thelatterauthorityhe persuadedhimselftohave fromthe"InvisibleChurch," amissionfromtheinvisible HeadoftheChurch,Christ Himself,withWhomheand hisMethodistswereunited byinvisiblebondsofgrace. Andhepersuadedhimself thatthushisindependent "Society"wasinnowaya separationfromtheChurch ofEngland.

Inordertostudycredit unionandco-oporganizationandoperationmore fully,MotherMarieAlicia andherassociate,Mother Adele,lastyeartravelled totheU.S.andCanadaon aspecialgrant. By.1744,theWesleyan MethistSocietywaseffectivelyorganised.Inthat sameyearthefirstWesleyanConferenceresolved thattheydidnotwanta schismfromtheChurchof England,andexpressedthe hopethattheywouldbe recognisedananauxiliary organisation.

Hebelievedimplicitlyin thenecessityofanApostolic successionofHolyOrders. butpersuadedhimselfthat therewasnorealdifferencebetweenbishopsand priests,andthatthelatter hadasmuchpowertoordainothersasthebishops themselves.

Hethereforeproceededto layhandsonhisown preachers,believinghewas givingvalidordination.In 1784.hewentsofarasto "consecrate"ThomasCoke as"Superintendent"over theMethodistsinAmerica. CokewasalreadyanordainedAnglicanclergyman, everybitasmuchasWesleyhimself.Wesleyhad nothingthatCokehimself didnotalreadyhave.

Inanycase,ifbishopand priestareoneandthesame thing.Cokecouldnothave furtherbeenconsecrateda bishop'Thereisanother mysteryhereinWesley's actionwhichseemsbeyond solution.Butonethingis certain.Hedidbelievethat ordainedpreachersreceived apowerandjurisdictionnot possessedbytheunordainedlaity;and,totheend,he foughtforaclergy-controlledSociety.Itwasa losingbattle. In1790,theyearbefore hisdeath,Wesleywrote: "AslongasIlive,thepeopleshallhavenosharein choosingeitherstewards orleaders.Wehavenot, andneverhavehadsucha custom."

To-day,peoplewhocall themselvesMethodistsstand fora"priesthoodofallbelievers."TheMethodistProfessorA.V.Murraywrites: "Ministersholdnopriesthooddifferinginkindfrom thatwhichiscommonto theLord'speople."Theyare setapart,hesays,"forthe, sakeofChurchorder,and notbecauseofanypriestly virtueinherentintheiroffice."("TowardsReunion," p.91).

ForthemodernMethodist, therefore,thereisnoApostolicsuccessionofHoly Orders.Whilsttheriteof impositionofhandshas beenretainedintheordinationservice,itisregardedasasymbolicalceremony only,ofnogreatimportance,andnotimplying anydoctrineofpresbyteral succession.

Ihadnotexpectedtofeel likethataboutaboriginal dancing.Fromvariousanthropologicalbooksread overaperiodofyears,I hadgatheredtheimpressionthattheAustralianaboriginewasaprimitivestoneageman,thathisintelligencewasofaloworder, thathisritualwasharsh andsavage.Therewas nothingharshaboutthis dancing.

Whatwasthepeculiar qualityoftheblackman's art?Firsttherewasthe orchestra:thedidjeridoo makingtheairvibrantwith itsmusic,andthesongmansingingandbeating uponhissticks.Together theyexpressedaharmony withalllifeandallliving things.Thedancerswarmedtothemovementand stampeduntilthedustrose incloudsaboutthem.

Here,too,wasanidentificationwiththelivingearth. Theirbodiesswayed,their

armsmovedfromsideto side,and,astheydanced. thedarknessclosedin.We werescarcelyawareofthis, suchwasoursatisfactionin watchingthepoetryoftheir motion.Soontherewas onlythelightofthestars andthefaintglowofthe threesmallfiresbywhich toseethem.

ReadingthePope's wordstotheworkers,I sawthatthereisonlyone solutionfortheseproblemsanditsolvesthem all.OnthefiftiethanniversaryofthatgreatsocialEncyclical,"Rerum Novarum,"PopePiusXII. drewourattentiontothe soundprinciplesofjusticeandlabourwhichit taught.

ToDivineHeart

Toinspiretheobservationoftheseteachingshe pointed,nottothecold figureofjusticewiththe scalesinherhand,butto theHeartofChrist,living,eagerwithlove.He speaksofthespiritofsocialjusticeenflamedwith "theardourofloveenkindledfromtheHeartof theRedeemer."

Thereisthetraditional recitalist,presentingtheperfectlytailoredpirogramme, everythingofthebestqualityandinperfecttaste.On Saturdayweweretreated totheRomanticandPostRomantic.

Schumann'sFMinorSonata,althoughnotintrue sonataform,tookuntoitselfmeaningandcharacter thatSchumannintendedit topossess,butwhichin lesserhandswouldbemissed.Albeit,Solomonisessentiallyamanlypianist, withoutanyofthesentimentalityoflesserartists: hisinsightintotheromanticismofthiscomposeris profoundandclear.

Thetriumphoftheeveningwastheplayingofthe fiveDebussyPreludes.There wastheoccasiontoexploit fullythevariedtimbreand touchofwhichSolomonis master.Andhedidexploitit,butsomusically,so

intelligently,thatitwould seemthatheviewedthem withasweetcomprehension oftheirpoeticaldimensions.

Hevestedthe"SubmergedCathedral"withsuch tragicbeautythatheap- pearedtoconveythenew significanceofthisexquis- itetonepoem.Iseemed to faintlyheartheplaintivechime penetratingtheiron curtainofmaterialism.

Atthesecondrecitalthe ScarlattiSonatainFMajor wasasashowerofgold.It wasperfectplaying.The clarityofhisarticulation wascompleteinevery rhythmicdetail.

Beethoven's"Appassionata"Sonatais,inmyopinion,oneofthemostdifficult bravuracompositions.For theworktobecorrectly portrayedpresentsasgreat adifficultytothemindas tothehand.Theretheartistgaveusarendition whichwasasnearperfect asIimagineitcouldever be.

Tothejoyofthe'audience,Solomongaveusa Chopingroup,thehighlight ofwhichwasthedelicately beautiful"Berceuse,"butto methisgroupwasofless musicalimportance,forit wasintherichmusical beautyoftheworksofnoble proportionsthatwegauged themeasureoftheman.

Atthesecondrecitalthe ScarlattiSonatainFMajor wasasashowerofgold.It wasperfectplaying.The clarityofhisarticulation wascompleteinevery rhythmicdetail.
