Intherapidly-developingsituationinEastern AsiabetweenCommunistsanddemocratsMr.Nehru hastriedhardtomaintainhisbalanceonthefence. Byeducationandupbringingheleansnaturallyto thedemocraticconceptoflife.Butthat,intheminds ofmillionsofAsians,isnecessarilyboundupwith colonialideaswhichopposetheirnascentnationalism.
Ontheotherhand,Chinahasseizedfromhim theinitiativeastheleaderofAsianaspirations,and ChinaonlystandsbythegraceofMoscow,whois anuncomfortablynearandmenacingneighbour.
Nehruisbesetwithasmany,ifnotmore,problemsthanisChina,withthenotableexceptionofaggressivecolonialaims.ButheshareswithChina andIndonesiathemystifyingambitiontoaddtoburdenswithwhichheisalreadyunabletocope.
MouthsFull,butReachingForMore
Therootproblemsforalloftheseincipientnations,noneofwhichhasaseparateexistenceofadecade'sstanding,wouldbe,Ishouldimagine,national unity,stablegovernment,andinternalsecurity.InsteadofthatwefindChinaeagerforforeignadventuresinKorea,Indo-China,andbeyond.Indonesia, withhugeareasoftheRepublicseethingwithdiscontentandsomeinopenrebellion,aimstohave moreterritoryattheexpenseoftheDutchandofAustraliansecurity.
IhavepreviouslydescribedNehruastheBenes ofAsia.Heistryingtoremainaliberalinaworld whereliberalshavenomoreplacethandinosaursand littlemorereality.Butbecauseheiswhatheis,he isthedarlingofthewoolly-mindedPressevenas Beneswas.Heispicturedforusamystical,introvertedmanofpeace.ButtherealNehruhasteeth andheisbeginningtoshowthem.Theattitudeof theIndianGovernmenttowardstheforeignmissions 'inthatcountryisobscuredbyaplethoraofconfused statementswhichpassforsubtlety.DespitetherepeatedassurancesofNehruwhichtendtosoftenthe harshutterancesofotherCabinetMinisters,thereis everyreasonforapprehensionthattheworkofthe ChurchinIndiamaysoonsuffercripplingblows.
Moreover,sincetheBritishquittedthesubcontinentin1947,therehasbeenmountingpressure togettheFrenchoutofPondicherry,Karikal,Mahe andYanoan;andthePortugueseoutofGoa,Diuand Damao,whicharetheremnantsofthesub-continent stillunderEuropeancontrol.

Anti-RedRevoltWillBeBeaconofHope.
Afewweeksagohebeganimportingarmsona reallylargescaleuntiltheAmericanswerecompelledtoflysimilarsuppliestohisalarmedneighbours-HondurasandSalvador.Atthesametime anenquirywasafootinneighbouringBritishHondurasregardingthenatureandaimsofthePeople's UnitedPartywhichwerea"moral"forvictoryin thedelayedelections.

Here,then,isamanwith hiswillfixedirrevocably againstGod.Whatfollows?Inthefirstplacehe hasrebelledagainsthis Maker,hassinnedandhas notrepented:justicedemandsthathebepunished. InhellhereceivespunishmentfromGod;thatthere ispunishment,andthatit isgreat,weknow;buthow greatandwhetherornotit isunrelaxingwedonot know.

"Perhaps,"youmaysay, -"butthatdoesnotanswer theobjectiontotheeternity ofhell.Canreasonalone demonstratethathellought tobeunending?"Yes. Allowmetopresumethat Mr.Nicholsadmits-asindeedhedoes-anunending lifetocome;alsofreedom ofman'swillwherelyheis morallyresponsibleforhis actionsandthereforefor hisfuturedestiny. Hebelievedimplicitlyin thenecessityofanApostolic successionofHolyOrders. butpersuadedhimselfthat therewasnorealdifferencebetweenbishopsand priests,andthatthelatter hadasmuchpowertoordainothersasthebishops themselves.
Hethereforeproceededto layhandsonhisown preachers,believinghewas givingvalidordination.In 1784.hewentsofarasto "consecrate"ThomasCoke as"Superintendent"over theMethodistsinAmerica. CokewasalreadyanordainedAnglicanclergyman, everybitasmuchasWesleyhimself.Wesleyhad nothingthatCokehimself didnotalreadyhave.
Inanycase,ifbishopand priestareoneandthesame thing.Cokecouldnothave furtherbeenconsecrateda bishop'Thereisanother mysteryhereinWesley's actionwhichseemsbeyond solution.Butonethingis certain.Hedidbelievethat ordainedpreachersreceived apowerandjurisdictionnot possessedbytheunordainedlaity;and,totheend,he foughtforaclergy-controlledSociety.Itwasa losingbattle. In1790,theyearbefore hisdeath,Wesleywrote: "AslongasIlive,thepeopleshallhavenosharein choosingeitherstewards orleaders.Wehavenot, andneverhavehadsucha custom."
To-day,peoplewhocall themselvesMethodistsstand fora"priesthoodofallbelievers."TheMethodistProfessorA.V.Murraywrites: "Ministersholdnopriesthooddifferinginkindfrom thatwhichiscommonto theLord'speople."Theyare setapart,hesays,"forthe, sakeofChurchorder,and notbecauseofanypriestly virtueinherentintheiroffice."("TowardsReunion," p.91).
ForthemodernMethodist, therefore,thereisnoApostolicsuccessionofHoly Orders.Whilsttheriteof impositionofhandshas beenretainedintheordinationservice,itisregardedasasymbolicalceremony only,ofnogreatimportance,andnotimplying anydoctrineofpresbyteral succession.

Ihadnotexpectedtofeel likethataboutaboriginal dancing.Fromvariousanthropologicalbooksread overaperiodofyears,I hadgatheredtheimpressionthattheAustralianaboriginewasaprimitivestoneageman,thathisintelligencewasofaloworder, thathisritualwasharsh andsavage.Therewas nothingharshaboutthis dancing.
Whatwasthepeculiar qualityoftheblackman's art?Firsttherewasthe orchestra:thedidjeridoo makingtheairvibrantwith itsmusic,andthesongmansingingandbeating uponhissticks.Together theyexpressedaharmony withalllifeandallliving things.Thedancerswarmedtothemovementand stampeduntilthedustrose incloudsaboutthem.

Thereisthetraditional recitalist,presentingtheperfectlytailoredpirogramme, everythingofthebestqualityandinperfecttaste.On Saturdayweweretreated totheRomanticandPostRomantic.
Schumann'sFMinorSonata,althoughnotintrue sonataform,tookuntoitselfmeaningandcharacter thatSchumannintendedit topossess,butwhichin lesserhandswouldbemissed.Albeit,Solomonisessentiallyamanlypianist, withoutanyofthesentimentalityoflesserartists: hisinsightintotheromanticismofthiscomposeris profoundandclear.
Thetriumphoftheeveningwastheplayingofthe fiveDebussyPreludes.There wastheoccasiontoexploit fullythevariedtimbreand touchofwhichSolomonis master.Andhedidexploitit,butsomusically,so
intelligently,thatitwould seemthatheviewedthem withasweetcomprehension oftheirpoeticaldimensions.
Hevestedthe"SubmergedCathedral"withsuch tragicbeautythatheap- pearedtoconveythenew significanceofthisexquis- itetonepoem.Iseemed to faintlyheartheplaintivechime penetratingtheiron curtainofmaterialism.
Atthesecondrecitalthe ScarlattiSonatainFMajor wasasashowerofgold.It wasperfectplaying.The clarityofhisarticulation wascompleteinevery rhythmicdetail.
Beethoven's"Appassionata"Sonatais,inmyopinion,oneofthemostdifficult bravuracompositions.For theworktobecorrectly portrayedpresentsasgreat adifficultytothemindas tothehand.Theretheartistgaveusarendition whichwasasnearperfect asIimagineitcouldever be.
