ProtestantsregardCatholicpopulardevotiontotheMotherofGodasbeingpreeminentlyaRomishcorruptionandfoul idolatry. FewProtestantprejudicesbetray suchanabysmalnescienceofearlyChurch documents.

EvenHarnack, themost learnedoftheProtestant critics, sinspotentlyhere. Hehadreadtoowellto brandpopulardevotionto MaryasamodernPopish corruption.Butwhenhe foundSt.Augustineinthe fourthcenturypermeated withit, hewaxedhostile againstthegreatestDoctor oftheearlyChurch, and expressedhisastonishment thatsuchatoweringgenius shouldstoopsolow!

Newmanbringsthishistoricalfactoutforcefully inhisnovelCallista.Init hewasaccusedofwantof truth.Inapostscripttothe 1888editionhewrote,"It waswithnolittlesurprise thatIfoundmyselflately accusedofwantoftruth, becauseIhavefollowed greatauthoritiesinattributingtoChristiansofthe middleofthethirdcentury whatiscertainlytobe foundinthefourth-devotions, doctrinesrepresentationsand declaratoryofthe highdignityoftheBlessed Virgin.

WesleyProvedUnknowingly CatholicInSomeDoctrines

Itisindeedaboldassumptiontothink thatthebewilderingvarietyofbeliefsheld byMethodistscaneverbereducedtoone definiteandconsistentstandard.Allthat wecandoistogivetheteachingofthe "DeedofUnion,"of1932,towhichitisthe MethodisthopethatalltheirChurcheswill subscribe.

This"DeedofUnion" declaresthatMethodists claimaplaceinthe"Holy CatholicChurch,"andthat theyaccept,theApostolicFaith,thehistoricCreeds, theProtestantprinciplesof theReformation,theHoly ScripturesastheonlyRule ofFaith,andtheevangelicaldoctrinesinWesley's "Sermons"and"Noteson theNewTestament."

Greatdifficultyarises fromthefactthatMethodistscannotagreeastowhat the"HolyCatholicChurch" is,norastothecontents oftheApostolicFaith.Hosts ofthemdonotbelievein thehistoricCreeds,which cannotbereconciledwith theprinciplesoftheProtestantReformation.

ThetheoryoftheBible onlyastheRuleofFaithis negativedbytheappealto the"ApostolicFaith"and the"HistoricCreeds,"an appealwhichintroduces TraditionalsoasaRuleof Faith!

AndmodernMethodists repudiatemuchoftheteachingcontainedinWesley's "Sermons"and"Notes." Still,noclearergeneral statementofMethodistdoctrinecanbegiven,and thereforewemustturnto morespecificmatters,beginningwithabriefglance atJohnWesley'sownposition.

CalvinismRejected

Theeffectofthe"New Birth"was,accordingto Wesley,free,present,and fallsalvation.Indeclaring salvationfreeforallmen ofgoodwill,JohnWesley expresslyrejectedCalvin's teachingthatitisforthe electonly.

HeinsistedthatChrist diedforall,anddeclared Calvin'sdoctrineofthepredestinationoftheelectonly tobe"fullofblasphemy." Inhisrevivalmeetingshe stressedeachman'spower tochoosesalvation,andlaid immenseemphasisonthe needofsurrenderingtothe graceofGod.

Onthisimportantissue heseparatedfromhisassociate,GeorgeWhitefield, whobelievedintheCal-

vinisticdoctrineofsalvationforelectsoulsonly.

Ontheotherhand,by declaringsalvationfree, Wesleycannotbesaidto haveacceptedtheLutheran doctrineofjustificationby faithonly, andnotby works.Manymodern Methodistsstillteachthat Lutherandoctrine.Butthey arenotfollowersofWesley inthat.

ItistruethatWesleywas first"converted"ataMora vianmeetingin1738,whilst, listeningtothereadingof Luther'sPrefacetothe

Onthissamepleathat salvationisfreetoallwho arewillingtoacceptit, manyMethodistsalsofeel calledupontorejectthe Catholicdoctrineofmerit. ThatgoodworksaremeritoriousbeforeGod,anddeservingofeternalreward, theydeny,despiteOur Lord'swords,"Begladand rejoice,foryourrewardis verygreatinHeaven," (Matt.v,12).

WesleyonMerit

Buthere,too,Wesleywas CatholicratherthanProtestantinhisteaching."As tomerititself,ofwhichwe havebeensodreadfully afraid,"hewrote,"weare rewardedaccordingtoour works,yea,becauseofour works.Howdoesthisdiffer fromsecundummerita operum,'asourworksdeserve'?Canyousplitthis hair?IdoubtIcannot." (Fitchett,"WesleyandHis Century,"p.381).

Methodistsholdthatacceptanceofgrace,,with consequent"conversion," bringswithitanabsolute anddivinelybegottenassurancethatone'ssinsare forgiven,andthatoneis indeedinGod'sloveand friendship.Thistheyregard astheirgreatcontribution toProtestantism,thegenuinerecoveryofamost importantyetforgotten evangelicaltruth.

NEWDELHI,May28(NC).-Ina secondletterreceivedherewithindays, PrimeMinisterJawaharlalNehrurepeated hisearlierassertionthatIndiangovernment restrictionsonforeignChristianmissionariesarebasedon"politicalandsocial"rather thanreligiousconsiderations.

TheTwoWere Miraculously CuredbyHim

GeorgeWhitefield

EpistletotheRomans.But, in1741,hepubliclyrejected Luther'sCommentaryon Romans,andhisteaching ofjustificationbyfaith only.

Lateron,inhis"Journal" hewrote:"Thegranderror oftheMoraviansisthat theyfollowLutherfor betterorforworse,and hencetheirnoworks,no law,nocommandments."

In"Sermon20"hesays: "Weareafraidlestany shouldusethephrase'the righteousnessofChristis imputedtome'asacover 1orhisunrighteousness. Wehaveseenthisdonea thousandtimes.Warnthem againstmakingvoidthat solemndecreeofGod, 'Withoutholinessnoman shallseetheLord',bya vainimaginationofbeing 'holyinChrist.'Oh,warn themthat,iftheyremain unrighteous,therighteousnessofChristwillprofit themnothing."

Itwouldbeaninjustice toMethodiststoattribute tothemthedoctrinethat itissufficienttobelievein Christtobesaved.Calviniststaughtthatdoctrine, fortheydeclaredthatonce onehadreceivedtheassuranceofelectionandjus- tification, itcouldneverbe lost.Forthemthequestion, "Areyousaved"wasfull ofmeaning.

ButforMethodiststhe questionisasmeaningless asforCatholics.TheyagreewithCatholicsthatnoone iseverallowedtopresume certaintyofsalvation.Alwayslatersinsarepossible. Onecanfallfromgrace.

Still,Methodistshold,as JohnWesleyheld,that, whilstassuranceofeternal salvationisnotpassible,assuranceofpresentpardon ofsinispossible.Infact, itisnecessary.

RetractedinAge

Ifone'ssinsareforgiven, onehasthatcertainty, the HolySpiritimmediatelyand directlytestifyingtothe soulthatitisinthegrace ofGodandthatitisthe childofGod.Ifonehasnot thatcertaintyasinfallible asfaithitself, thenone's sinsarenotforgivenatall.

Inthisdoctrine,that mancannotonlyattainto thegraceofGod,butcan knowwithinfalliblecertaintythathehasattained toit,Wesleywasdefinitely atvariancewithCatholic teaching.

TheCatholicChurchadmitsthatonecanhavea well-groundedconfidence thatheisinGod'sloveand friendship,bothbythe knowledgeofone'sownsincerityandthetestimonyof agoodconscience.This trustinGodgivessufficient peaceofsoul.

Butabsoluteandinfallibleassuranceisnotpossible,andisbutaformof self-deception.EvenSt. Pauldidnotclaimit."I amnotconscioustomyself ofanything,"hewroteto theCorinthians,"yetIam notherebyJustified."(I Cor.,iv,4).Therearethings wemustleavetoGod.

Wesleyhimself,inhisold age,greatlymodifiedhis ideasonthismatter.He retractedhisteachingthat inwardassuranceisnecessaryforsalvation,andthat thosewholackitarestill intheirsins.

"Thequestionofforeign Christianmissionariesin Indiaisnotconsideredby usfromtheviewpointof Christianity, butfromthe viewpointofforeigners comingtoIndia,"theIndianPremiertoldBishop Mondel.

" entryof political Anyunrestricted foreignerscreates problemswhich us."-(H.MaldwynHughes, "ChristianFoundations," p.158).

Inhisearlieryears, Wesleyheldthestrange doctrinethatconversion oftenmeant,notonlythe forgivenessofsins,butthe instantaneouschangeofa sinnerintoasaint.It means"entiredeliverance fromeveryevilwork,sinful thought,passion,desire, temper,fromallinbredcorruption,andalltheremains ofthecarnalmind."(Sermon83).

TooSuddenSaints

From1759till1762.many ofhisfollowersclaimed thisexperience,andthe numberof"saints"multipliedexceedingly.Thosewho claimedthis"entiresanctification"weregrouped intospecial"SelectSocieties."

ButWesleywassoondisillusionedbytheirhypocrisy, jealousy, envyand discord. The"SelectSocieties"weresoonabolished, andWesleycamebackto Catholicsanitywithhis teachingofanobligationto tendtoperfectionbyprogressivegrowthinvirtue. Conversionisbutthestarting-pointfromwhichone mustpressontowardsholiness.

InevitablyWesleyhadto facethequestionofthe fateofthosewhodiedbeforehavingattainedtoperfectholiness.Forhehimselfheldthateverysoul mustbeentirelyholybeforeitcouldbeadmitted toHeaven, andtheDivine Presence.

Havingnoideaofthe CatholicdoctrineofPurgatory,hethoughtthatthe actitselfofdyingmust cleansethesoulofallresidualdefects.

Thesecondletterreleas-maygiveustroubleinthe edherewasaddressedtofuture.Thisquestionis BishopMondel,presidentof theChristianCouncilof IndiaandPakistan.The letterreleasedearlierhad beenaddressedtotheLutheranPrimateofSweden, ArchbishopYngveBrilioth.

However,sometimeago thesecretaryoftheCatholic Bishops'Conference,ArchbishopThomasPothacamury,ofBangalore,raisedhis voiceagainstwhathecalled"theatmosphereofsuspicion"inwhichChristian missionariesarebeingplaced.

"Wehadhopedthatthe timehadpassedwhen Christianitywaslooked uponasaninstrumentof foreigncultureandof foreignpoliticalandcommercialinfluence, andthat conversiontoChristianity wasanactofdisloyaltyand betrayalofIndia'sinterests,"theArchbishopsaid.

Theforeignmissionaries, hepointedout, haveadded tothewealthofIndia.Large sumsofmoneyhavebeen pouredintoIndiafromtheir homelandsforthebuilding ofschoolsandhospitals,he noted.

ArchbishopMartinLucas, PapalInternunciotoIndia, hasstatedthatanyCatholicmissionaryfoundtaking partinpoliticswouldbe summarilydealtwithby theChurchherself.
