Forhim,therefore,the "newbirth"wasevidenceof repentanceofpost-baptismalsin,andofadewstart inthespirituallifewhich hadalreadybeenreceived. Buthegavelittlethoughtto theology,andsopreached thenecessityofa"new birth"withoutqualification thathisownfollowersinterpreteditastakingthe placeofbaptism,andprovidingtheverybeginnings ofthelifeofgracewithin thesoul.

Thestrangethingisthat Wesleyknewthis, andpermittedit, makingnoeffort tocorrectmisunderstandings, thoughthemisconceptionwasnotinaccordance withhisownconvictions. Thisisoneofthemany mysteriesofinconsistency inWesleywhichdefysolution.

The"innerlight"towhichWesleyappealedwas nosubstitutefortheabidingpresenceoftheHoly SpiritintheauthoritativeteachingChurchestablished byChrist. haveinsistedonthenecessityofbelongingtothe CatholicChurchandbeing inunionwithRome!

ButWesleywasinterested,notintheFaiththey professed,butonlyintheir rulesforspirituallivingand forprogressinvirtue.Doctrinally,hehimselfwas evervague,uncertain,and inconsistent;andanything butareliableguidetothe beliefsrequiredofChristians.

Wesleycertainlyaccepted thedoctrinethat"Goo's WrittenWordistheonly andsufficientrulebothof faithandpractice,"which allMethodistsprofess.But hedenounced"privateinterpretation"asaseedplot ofendlesserrors.

Absorbedbythoughtsof individualsalvation,and ofthenecessityofconversion,JohnWesleydevoted littleattentiontothegreat dogmaticaffirmationsabout God,theHolyTrinity,and theDivinityofChrist.

Thoseheneverdenied,of course.Hetookthemfor granted.Butconversion impliesrepentanceofsins, andthesubjectofsinassumedgreatimportancein hiseyes.

Hisstarting-pointwas fromtheNinthoftheAnglican"ArticlesofReligion," whichdeclaredthat"OriginalSin isthefaultand corruptionofthenatureof everymanthatnaturallyis engenderedoftheoffspring ofAdam."
