OurHolyFatherhasapprovedtheplanoftheMarianYearCommittee,settingasidethelastSunday inMayasadayofspecialprayerforanincreaseinpriestlyandreligiousvocationsthroughouttheworld. WehavethereforeconsidereditopportunetoaddressthisPastoralLettertoyou,belovedchildreninChrist. toarouseyourinterestinthispraiseworthycauseandtotellyouofourintenseinterestintheprogressand growthofthereligiouscommunitiesinourArchdiocese:
WedependontheHolyGhostforthisdevelopment,andtheapproachofPentecostwillremindushow thegraceoftheHolySpiritwasobtainedforthefirstBishopsoftheChurchthroughtheintercessionof theImmaculateMotherofGodandthePowerfulHelpofChristians.TheBishopsneedto-daythesame strongaid,andweseekitthroughtheintercessionofMaryinthisyeardedicatedtoHer.AlargeproportionofthisaidisgiventotheBishopsbythereligiouscommunitiesfoundinallthediocesesofthe world.
TotheApostles,andthroughthemtotheirlawfulsuccessors,theBishopsoftheCatholicChurch, Christgavepowerandacommissionto"gointothewholeworldandtopreachtheGospeltoeverycreature."Clearly,theBishopscannotdothisworkalone;theyneedthehelpofanarmyofgenerousmen andwomentoassistthem.ItisessentialinGod'splanofRedemptionthattherebe"otherChrists," bearingHisauthorityandclothedinHispriesthood,tobringthelightofFaithtothose"whositindarknessandintheshadowofdeath."Itisessentialthattherebe"ministersofChristanddispensersofthe mysteriesofGod,"toapplytosoulsthelife-givinggraceofGod.
Itisnecessary,too,thattherebedevoutandgeneroussouls,menandwomen,whohavededicated theirlivestoGodasreligiousBrothersandSisterstoassisttheBishopinhispastoralworkofcaringfor souls.TomanifestthefulnessofCatholiclifeandcharitytheremustbe,inadiocese,housesofcontemplativenuns,schools,orphanages,hospitals,collegesatsecondaryandtertiarylevels.Inorderthatthe KingdomofGodmaybeestablishedandextendedintheworld,thereisanurgentneedto-dayforavast armyofsoulswillingtodedicatetheirwholelivestoGod,"fortheharvestindeedisgreat,butthe labourersarefew."ThereissuchaneedintheworldthereissuchaneedinAustralia;thereisa greatneedinthisArchdioceseofPerth,wheretherehasbeenabigincreaseintheCatholicpopulation throughthecomingofmanynewAustraliansandthroughthenaturalgrowthoftheState.Wemustnot losesight,either,ofthehostofnon-Catholicsoulswhoareentrustedtotheprudentapostolateofthe Churchandwhoare"theothersheep"whomustbebroughtintotheonefoldoftheChurch.
Wewishtoturnnowtothereligiouslifeandtothereligiousvocation.Thereligiouslifeisoneof thegloriesoftheCatholicChurch.Itisthe"moreperfectlife,"whichwill,iffaithfullylived,bring those,whoembraceit,infalliblytoholiness.Thosewhobecomereligious,bothmenandwomen,aimto imitateChristbythepractice,inparticular,ofpoverty,chastityandobedience,whichareespecially manifestedinHislife.TheyaimtodotheworkofChrist,teaching,caringforthesickandorphan, aboveall,prayingfortheChurchofGodanditsmembers.Theystrivetobe"thesaltoftheearth"and thelightoftheworld,"spreadinganinfluenceforgoodtocounteracttheinfluenceforevilthatissomanifestoneveryside.
OneoftheconsolationsofourCatholiclifeisthatthishighaimhasbeen,andisbeing,achievedinthe religiousinstitutesoftheArchdiocese.Godhasblessedthem,extendedtheirapostolate,giventhemmore schools,morehospitals,moreorphanages.God'sblessingwouldbestillmoreevidentweretheremore vocations,forthereisstillmuchtobedoneandthisinlargeparthastobeleftundone.Thenumberof religioushouseshasincreased.Theself-sacrificinglifeofthoseinthemhasbroughtgreathappinessto individualsoulsandgreatcomfortandaidtotheBishops,clergy,andfaithfulCatholicpeople.
Wemaysay,then,thatlifeinthereligiousstateisasensiblelife,asafelife,ausefullife,ameritoriouslife,aholylife,and,forthosewhoarecalledtoit,asupremelyhappylife.Happinessultimately comesfromknowingthosethingsthatsatisfyourmindsandfrompossessingthosethingsthatsatisfyour wills.ButthereisnothingthatcansosatisfyourmindsandwillsascanGod.Livingalifeofclose unionwithGod,knowingHimparticularlyinprayer,andlovingHim"withthelabouroftheirhandsand thesweatoftheirbrows,"as,saysSt.VincentdePaul,theyobtainahappinessthatisnotofthisworld,a joythatnomancantakeaway.
AreligiousvocationisnotordinarilymanifestedbysomeextraordinarysignthatGodwantsasoul todedicateitselftoHisservice.Rather,itismanifestedinadesiretogiveoneselfmorecompletelyto Godthanispossiblewhilelivingintheworld.Anyyoungmanorwoman,livingthegoodlifeofanormalCatholic,whoenjoys,inaddition,ordinarygoodhealth,andwhoiswillingtomakesacrificesforOur Lord,can,byGod'sgrace,becomeagoodreligious.
Sometimesparentsraiseobstaclestothetruereligiousvocationofasonordaughter.Theyshould recallthatitisGodwhogavethechild,andthatHecould,ifHesowished,takeitbackinalesspleasantway.Youngpeopleevenintheir"teens"haveastrictnaturalrighttochoosetheirownstateoflife. Tostandinthewayofagenuinereligiousvocationofasonordaughtercouldbringgreatsorrowtothe parentswhosotrytothwartit.Whereparentsmayhavegoodreasontodoubtthegenuinenessofa child'svocationtheyhavetherighttoinsistonalimiteddelaytotestit.However,parentshavenoright atalltodominateachild'ssettledconscience.
ObeyingtheexpresswishofOurHolyFather,thePope.wearedevotingSunday,May30,tospecial prayerforanincreaseinthenumberandqualityofreligiousvocationsthroughouttheworld,andespeciallyinthisArchdiocese.WeshallpraythatGodmayhelpustounderstandbetterthenobilityand greatnessofthereligiousvocation;thatHemayinspireparentstobegofHimtheinestimablefavourofreligiousvocationsamongsttheirownchildren:thatHemayputintogenerousyoungheartsthe desireandthecouragetofollowChrist,leavingallthings.

HisGracecongratulated leaguemembersandthankedthemfortheworkthey weredoing.Hewaspar- ticularlygratefultothem forthehelptheyweregivingtheSeminary.
TheArchbishopreminded themoftheirobligation,as womenimbuedwithChristianprinciples,tobea leaveninginfluenceamong otherwomen'sorganisationswithwhichtheywere associated.
Insofarasothersrejectedmoralprinciples,hesaid, tothatextentwereCatholic womenobligedtopreserve anddefendthoseprinciples atalltimesandinevery place.
Theywereengagedin manysocialactivities,continuedHisGrace,andthey shouldregardthoseasan apostolate.Theirmotive shouldbecharityasdistinct fromphilanthropy. TheArchbishopsaidthat anurgentproblemfacing theChurchinAustraliatodaywasthequestionofvocationstothereligiouslife. Therewasagraveshortage,particularlyamong youngwomen,ofdedicated soulstostaffourschools, ourhospitals,ourHomesfor theaged,theorphan,and thepenitent.
TheHolyFather,just risenfromhissickbed,had pennedamagnifipentlet-
terinpraiseofvirginity, pointingoutitsadvantages, evenagainstmarriage,in boththenaturalandthe supernaturalorders.
Speakingtoparents,the Popeurged"mothersand fatherstowillinglyofferto theserviceofGodthoseof theirchildrenwhoarecalledtoit.""Letparents consider,"hewrote,"what anhonouritistosee theirdaughterconsecrate hervirginitytoherDivine Spouse."
Consequently,saidHis Grace,parentshadagrave obligationinthematter.He wasconvincedthatmany vocationswerelostbecause ofthepositiveopposition ofparents.Parentsshould realise,hesaid,thatAlmightyGodhadgiventhem theirchildren,andsometimesHeaskedthemtogive backthechildrentothereligiouslife.IftheyrefusedAlmightyGodmight takethechildreninaless pleasantway. Althoughtheneedofmanywell-trainedpriests isbasictothepreservationandextensionoftheCatholicreligion,thedivineworkofthepropagationof theFaithwouldbynomeansbemetwerethatradical requirementfilled.Forbetweenthepriesthoodand thelayconditionisthatwitnessoftheperfectChristianlife-atleastinstriving-whichfillsupsomuch thatiswantingofthespiritofChristinthelifeofthe Church.TheReligiousOrdersofpriests,Brothers, andnunsprovidetheopportunityandthemilieufor theleavingofallthingsandthefully-dedicatedfollowingofOurLord.That,withoutquestion,istheir chiefvaluethattheyshowforthChristtotheworld. Andtheirworks-ofmagnitude,richnessandvariety -followthem.Theyexpressinvisiblefashionthe heartsofGracethatinspirethem.Butthey,too,are feelingthestringencythatarisesfrommultiplying tasksanddiminishingorstaticnumbers.Thecloistersarenotovercrowded.
InAustralia,to-day,asHisGracetheArchbishophasemphasisedinhispastoralletter,thereisconcernchieflyaboutthefailureofyoungwomentorespondtoGod'scalltotheReligiouslife.Thereisnot adioceseinthecountrywhichisnotfeelingthepinch whenthematterarisesofopeningnewschools.Nuns arelackingtostaffourschools,ourhospitals,our homesfortheaged,theorphan,andthepenitent. Indeed,unlessthesituationimproves,thedaymay notbefardistantwhenlaywomenwillhavetobe employedinthoseworksofinstructionandmercy. Atthepresenttimethere arethirty-fourstudentsin theseminary,including sevenphilosophers.There arefiveprofessorsandan orderofUrsulinenunsattendtothecooking,cleaningandsoon.Oneofthese nuns,Sr.Philoinena,took herfinalvowsinthechapel atMassthismorning.

ExcitementRanHighonThatDay
WednesdayMarch31, 1954!Thegreatdayon whichweweretoseethe Queen!Excitmentranhighthat morning,becauseafterall thesemonthsofwaitingand listeningtobroadcastsand seeingpicturesoftheQueen, itwasourturntoseeher. Therewasabuzzofexcitementinthedormitory, aseverybodytalkedabout goingtoseetheQueen.
Afterhavingbreakfastwe wentupstairstogetdressed. Inashorttimethebuses arrivedtotakeustoour destination,Guildford.On thewaywepassedthe slaughteryardsandthesale yards,wherewesawafew cattle.Wealsopassedthe riflerange.
Whenwearrivedat Guildfordwealightedfrom thebusesandtookupour allottedposition.Wewatchedthearrivaloftheother schools.
Apolicemanwalkedup anddownthecrowdstelling ustokeepbackoffthe road.AfewminutesbeforetheRoyalprogressarrivedapolicemaninacar drovealongandtoldus thattheformationwewere holdingwasgoodandto keepit.
Thenwesawtheow.riderscomingintoviewand allcranedtheirnecksin thedirectionoftheRoyal car.Soonweheardthecry of"Theresheis".And everybodycheeredand cheered.
ThenIgotmyfirst glimpseoftheQueenand theDukeofEdinburgh. BeforeIrealisedthatthe Royalcouplehadarrived theyweregone.

Thepresentationof"Black Limelight,"byGordon Sherry,wasanambitious undertakingforanamateur company.
Itisamystery-thriller. Theplotisconcernedwith amurder,andthesuspect, whosewifeplaysdetective tofindarealkillerandso clearherhusband.Her solutionisarathernaive one,notbotheringaboutthe nicetiesofcrime-detection: usingsomelazylogictodeducetherealkiller,and whereandwhenhewill strikeagain,andworking inaconvenientlynarrow field,obliviousofallpossibleoutsidesuspects.The solutionissimpleandgreatlysurprising.
Themeritoftheplaylies notinanintellectualgame ofsubtledetection-thereasoningistooinconclusive forthat-butintheemotive effectsofitstautatmosphere.
Aplaydependingforits effectonthecreationofa certainatmosphere(ofsuspense,horror,etc.)cansucceedonlyifthecastiscapableofevokingthisatmosphere,wooingthespectator todoffthefabricationthat ishisownpersonalreality andbecomeabsorbedinthe hypotheticalrealityofthe play.
IthinkPatchhasdonea goodjobwiththisplay.

tiondoesevokeatmosphere. Act1worksupwelltoa goodcurtainthatkeysup theaudiencewithanticipationofwhatwillfollow. Andthetensionincreases throughoutActII,consistentlymountingandfinishingonamosteffectivesuspense-note.
Unhappily,thepromising situationclosingActIIis notskilfullydevelopedin ActIII,whichopensina neutralkey;thedenouementcouldhavebeenmore efficientlyworkedout,and itsspine-chillingpossibilitiesmoretellinglyexploited;butthisappliestothe playitselfratherthanto theproduCtion.
Itisapitytherewas suchalongpauseforintervalbetweenthesecondand thirdActs.Infactany breakhereisaflaw;andallowingtheaudiencetoslip backintojollityovercups ofteaisundoingthecast's workofinducingthemto accepttheillusionofa highly-charged,suspenseful atmosphere.
ActIIisthestrongestact oftheshow,despiteholdupsinerectingacumbersomesetwhichisanti quated,afterthesmooth efficient"flashbacks"of films.Itisundulyelaborate;butitiseerieandintensifiesthegrimatmosphere,sothatthemurdersceneismosteffective.
Onthewholeitisagoodqualitycast.
MissMcCarter,asthe wife,playswell;although sheisratherimmature,not entirelyconvincingasshe voicesthewordsofa womanallegedlyrivenwith worryoverherhusband's predicament.Sheseemeda littleover-comfortablein herpart,notbeingthrown offbalancealongwithher character.Sheisnotin controlofherlines,tendingtodeliverthemataset tempo,notbackingthemup withovertexpressionsof theemotionsrevealedby thelines.
Attentiontothesepoints wouldimproveherperformance,butitisalready goodandnatural.Shedoes not"ham"herpart,andis pleasanttowatchandlisten to.
