Themeoftheconference was"ModernYouthand Friendship."

Sincetherewasusually noimmediatehopeofmarriage,therewereoften doubtsaboutwhetherthe friendshipshouldbecarried linandwithwhatpurpose inmind,andevenwhether thefriendshipwaswholesomeinitself,hesaid.

Thedoubtshouldnever exist,hesaid,ratherthe friendshipshouldbelooked uponasacontinuallyenrichingexperiencefroma characterformationpointof view;ifithadtobeterminatedforanyreason,then bothpartiescoulddosoreluctantly,butassuredthey werethebetterforhaving knowneachothersowell.

Al] friendshipswereeithermorallyhelpfulor harmful,andtobehelpful theyhadtobebasedon genuineagreement-areal considerationthatoneself mightnotbepleasingto othersandthataspiritof self-sacrificemightbeneeded.

PORPHYRY:APleaforPity AndADemandforHumility

ThehistoryoftheChurchisatreasury ofexperiences.WesawlasttimeanexampleofCatholicActioninthesecondcentury.Butwecanlearnnotonlyfromthe shiningexamplesofpeoplelikethosepresentedinthestoryofMinuciusFelix.We havetobenefitalsofromsomeofourpast mistakes.

Insteadofignoringthat duringthepast2,000years thehumansideofthe Churchhadafewsetbacks, wemustratheranalyse theseinstancesinorderto avoidtheminthefuture. Thereisaproverbsaying thatthewisemanlearns fromthemistakesofothers.

ThelifeofPorphyry,a secondcenturypaganphilosopher,ismoreofatragedythanamistake.He wasabrilliant,intelligent person,oneoftheoutstandingrepresentativesofpagan culture.Laterinhislife hebecamethedeadlyenemy ofChristianity,somuchso thatevencenturiesafter himsomedocumentsrefer toanti-Christianliterature as"Porphyrism."

Intheedictsofsome Christianemperorsagainst paganwritingsheisthe onlyone,.hoismentioned byname.Itmaybean idlelamentationtothink thatthecourseofpasthistorycouldhavegoneotherwiseinsomeinstances,but IdaretosaythatPorphyry couldhavebeenoneofthe greatestChristianwriters.

Socrates,theChurch-historian,writesofhimas "Christianos." Normally Christianswerementioned as"fidelis,"andtherefore wemaythinkthathewas acathecumenasayoung man.

tellectualcentresintheRomanEmpireofhistime. Origen,aChristianteacher, hadaschoolatCaesarea; Plotinus,apaganphilosopher,hadhisdisciplesin Rome. Porphyrycame fromTyre(Syria),andby thetimehearrivedinCaesareahehadreceivedhis earlyeducationinthe Orient.

Hewasversedinthesacredandpaganliteratureof theJewsandthePhoenicians,andnowhisrestless mindurgedhimtoseek morewisdominothercentresoflearning.Theschool ofOrigenhadahighstandard,notonlyfromthe Christian,butfromevery pointofview.

St.Jeromewritesof Origenthathe"taughtall theschoolsofphilosophers insuchwisethathehad alsodiligentstudentsin secularliterature,andlecturedtothc.ndaily,andthe crowdswhichflockedtohim weremarvellous.These, hereceivedinthehopethat throughtheinstrumentof hissecularliterature,he mightestablishtheminthe faithofChrist."(Nota badexampleforCatholic teachers.)

ButnextwefindPorphyryinRome,amongthe disciplesofPlotinus.His viewswerenotyetantiChristian,ratherheretainedforalongwhileasincerevenerationforthePersonofChrist.Whathe dislikedweretheChristians themselves. Heturned againsttheChristianoutlookonlyafteratragicspiritualbreakdown.

Afteraclosestudyofdifferentpaganmysterieshe becamedisappointedin them,andwrotesuchforcefulattacksagainstthe pagansthatevenSt.Augustinequoteshisviewsonthe matterwithapproval.But thegreatdisappointment brokehislife.Hecontemplatedsuicide.Itwashis master,Plotinus,whosavedhimbysendinghimto sunnySicilyforaholiday.

Thereweretwopossible outcomesfromhisstateof mind:eithertoturnbackto Christianity.ortofollowhis pride.Hetookthesecondline,andbyvehement antagonismhe"justified" hisprouddetachmentfrom theChristians.

Onlyinhisoldagedoe.-; heechoagainthemessage ofChrist.Towardstheend ofhislife,inaletter,"Ad Marcellam,"heseesvirtue intruth,loveandhope,and forthesakeofoursoul,he says,weshouldcutoffnot onlyapart,butourwhole body

EveninthisbroadoutlinethelifeofPorphyryis reallytragic.Andhistragedyoriginatesinthatearly Christiancommunityin Caesarea.Unfortunatelywe havenohistoricdocuments toshowuswhatactually happenedintheCaesarean community.Wecanonly guess.

Inspiteofthegreatness ofOrigentherestofthe communitymusthavebeen ratherhumble,naiveand unimaginative.(OrigenhimselfarrivedfromAlexandrianotlongbeforePorphyry.)Porphyry,with allhisknowledgeandenthusiasmmusthavebeena nuisanceandembarrassmentforthem.

WeighingIssues

asaintbyvirtueofwanting amorevigorouslife.Butby ourcarelessattitudewecan antagonisethese"potential Porphyries"andwecan warptheirmindsandmix uptheirhealthyviews.We candrivethemintomistakes,andthenitissoeasy tomakejudgmentonthem. Butletusjudgefirstourselves,letusbrush-upour charityandunderstanding.

Letthe"Porphyries" judgethemselves.Andthey ontheotherhand,must brushuptheirhumility.It mustbehard,Ibelieve.But tofollowChristisalways hard,andtheannoyances theycomeacrossistheir specialcross.Theymust thinkofChristwhowasn't understoodevenbyHis owndisciplesuptothelast moment.

St.Augustine,whilewritingofPorphyryinhis"City ofGod,"givesalessonto allfuture"Porphyries": "Thusdrovestthoumen intomostcertainerror,and artnotashamedofit,being aprofessorofvirtueand wisdom,whichifthoutruly respected,thouwouldst haveknownChristtobethe virtueandwisdomofGod theFather,andnothave leftHissavinghumilityfor theprideofvainknowledge."

MONTECASSINO,Italy,May8.-May18wasthetenthanniversaryoftheWorldWarII.battleinwhichPolishtroopsfinallyconqueredtheheightswheretherenownedBenedictineAbbey ofMonteCassino,birthplaceofwesternmonasticismandage-old symbolofChristianpietyandculture,hadbeenbombedtocompletedestruction.

Inthatearlydevelopment ofChristianlifethey couldn'teasilyfindaplace forhim,butratherregardedhimassomethingalien totheirsimplethoughorthodoxoutlook.Wecannotreallyblamethemin thatstageofourhistory,althoughtheycouldhave shownmorecharityandunderstandingtowardshim.

Itiseasytojudge2,000 yearsafter,whenweknow thattheChurchnotonly hasplacefor,butsurely needs,theseoutstanding personalities,whocanbring newlifeintothecommunity.

MaybeParphyryistobe blamedevenmore.He shouldn'thaveconfusedthe naiveattitudeofasingle communitywiththeimmensegreatnessofthe Faith.Hemusthavebeen blindnottoseethediffereoce;nayhewasn'thumble atall,fortakingtoheartso deeplytheannoyancewhich musthavebeencausedby somemembersofthecommunity.

Itwasadayof mingledgriefand rejoicing:griefover oneofthemost tragiceventsofthe war;rejoicingover thewayinwhich agreatmonument ofChristianbeauty andarthasbeen virtuallyresurrectedfromitsashes. "TheAnglican"described suchareferenceas"McCarthysmeartechnique."

Nowthatisverycurious, becauseBishopBurgmann hasalongbackgroundof pro-Soviet,pro-Communist sympathy.WhatMr.Wentworthobjectedtointhe HouseofRepresentativeson April8wasaletterpublishedinthe"Canberra Times"andtheMelbourne "Age"ofthatdatetowhich BishopBurgmannwasone ofthesignatories.

WhatAreMotives?

Theletter,signedaswell byProfessorsC.P.Fitzgerald(FarEasternHistory), ManningClark(History), andDavidson,oftheAustralianNationalUniversity, wasconcernedtodenythat theVietminhrevolutionary movementinIndo-China wasCommunist,although ithadneverbeensodescribedbyMr.R.G.Caseyand Dr.Evatt.

Now,whenmenofeducationandresponsiblepositionundertaketomisrepresentanissueofsuchgravity,itisnotonlyreasonable butimperativetoinquire whattheirmotivesmaybe.

Firstly,astothefactsof thesituation,itmustberecognisedthattheVietminh "revolutionarymovementis exclusivelythecreationof HoChiMinh,whofounded itin1941.In1923HoChi MinhwenttoRussia,where hestudiedattheFarEasternToilers'University. Afterindoctrination,hebecametheassociateofthe RussianBorodin,whowas organisingtheChineseCommunistparty.

Insuchasurveythere wasnaturallynoconsiderationgiventothequestionof reunionwithRome,foreven tothemostsanguineProtestantthatmustseema prospectgrowingeverremoterasthesectssliptheir linesfurtherfromChristian fundamentals.

In1929,afterhisfirsthandexperienceinsuch matters,hereturnedtoIndoChina,wherehefounded theCommunistpartySo, HoChiMinhandhisgeneralissimo,Giap,havenot onlybeenCommunistsfor 20years,butworldfigures intheCommunisthierarchy.

OnlylastweekAmerican administrationofficialsstatedthatRussiawassupplyingSovietmilitaryadvisers totherebelforcesinIndoChinadowntothedivision level.

TwothousandCommunistChineseholdkeypositionsofmilitaryandtechnicalguidanceunderHo.

declaresheholdstheplaceof again,"IntheDayofJudgmenttherewillbetwo classesonlyontheearththosewhohaveworshipped thebeast,andthosewho havegottenthevictoryover thebeast.Thefirstwillgo toeternaldestructionwith thebeast;theotherswill receiveeternalsalvationat thehandsofJesusChrist". Itseemsincrediblethat therearepeoplewhocan thinkandspeakinsucha wayinthesedays.Yetthese arenotisolatedutterances.
