Onthesameday,membersoftheThirdOrderof St.Francisandparishioners ofMidlandJunctionwill visittheshrine.

Itwasreportedthatthepublicattendancesat churchservicesovertherecentEasterseasonwere greaterthanhadbeenknownforsomeyears.One reasongivenmighthavebeentheshockingnews,just previoustotheholyseason,ofthefearfulprospects ofhydrogen-bombwarfare,andontheheelsofthis, therevelationofaComunistspy-ringexistinginAustralia.ThiscouldindicatethatthepeoplearelookingforHimwhoalonecangivetruepeace.Ifthen thepeoplearebeginningtolookforGod,itisthe dutyofCatholicstohelpinleadingthemtoHim.° Thatisadutywhichcanperhapsbebestfulfilledas apriestdedicatedinmind,heartandwilltobring mentoChristandtocalldownonmenthemerits ChristwonforthemonCalvary.

Theworldoffersmanyenticementsforyoung mentoremaininitandbeofit.Butwhenthey haveenjoyedallthattheworldcangive,withwhat aretheyleft?Allofthemwoulddoubtlesspursue professionswhichinthemselvesmaybelawfuland pleasingtoGod,buthowmanyofsuchcan,ofthemselves,aidtheminattainingtheireternalsalvation. Theyneedonlylookbeyondthemselvesandseeabout themtheindifferencethatexiststowardsGod,not tomentionthesinscommittedagainstHim.They areabletoremovesomeofthatindifferenceandmake reparationforsomeofthesins,aslaymen,butwhat Godwantsisyoungmenwhowillgivetheirwhole livestodoingthis.Intheeyesoftheworld,young Catholicmenmayleavemuchbehindthembygiving theirlivestoGod'sservice,butwhattheygainisimmeasurablygreater.OurLordhaspromisedeven inthislifeareturnofahundredfoldforanything givenupinHisname.Thecompletecoursetothe goalofthealtarislongandformostnotwithoutdifficulty,butmostpriestsconfesstheirseminarydays werehappyones.

Avocationcomprisestwoparts,anexternaland aninternalvocation.Theformerisnomorethanthe callingandadmissionoftheperson,judgedfit,tobe ordainedbythebishopwhoistoconfertheSacramentofHolyOrders.Theinternalvocationispresupposedbytheexternalvocation.Itisgenerallythe internalvocationwhichpeoplehaveinmindwhen theyspeakofavocation.Ithasitsbeginningsyears beforeayoungmanisactuallycalledintheordinationceremony,anditdevelopsovertheyearshe spendsintheseminary.Thequalitiesrequiredfor admittancetoaseminaryarefewandsimple:good health,averageintellectualability,moralfitnessand therightintention. Thepresenceofthefourqualitiesonlyneedbe ascertainedindecidingwhetherGodiscallingoneto beapriest.Wherethenisthemystery,theheavenly sign?Themostimportantqualityisarightintention. Thatmeanssimplythatone'smotivesinseekingthe priesthoodmustbesupernatural,thatis,insomeway connectedwithGod.Suchmotivesmaybemanyand varied,butoneneedonlyputthemotivesfeltbefore one'sconfessortodiscoverwhetherornottheyare adequate.Inthematterofavocation,therefore,feelingsarenotnecessary.Whatisnecessary,however,is aresolution,precededbytheconviction,thatone oughttobeapriest.Then,havingcomethatfar,no obstacleshouldhinderatestofthatvocationinthe seminary.Thewaymaybelongandthegoinghard, butthereisalsoajoy,neverbeforeexperienced,with thegentlestofMastersandkindestofFatherstoaid andguide.

Sir,-TheseriouspositionbroughtaboutinAustraliabythedisparitybetweenreligiousvocations andincreaseinCatholic populationsuggeststhatan improvementintheapproachtoencouragmentof vocationsshouldbesought.

Theobviousrejoinderthat moreprayerandpietywill increasevocations,Ithink, isonlypartialandignores thevalueofgoodworks:n theshapeofuseofthe methodsofresearchwhich manhasaccumulatedand developedinhiseffortsto improvehisordinaryenvironment.

Thereisnothingnovelin this,asinbothAmericaamid GreatBritaintheFaith itselfisbeingadvertised and'putacross'bymethods culledfrommodernbusiness.Inmodernbusiness whenaresistancetodevelopmentorsalesisencounteredthefirstthingwhich isdoneistoresearchinto andanalysethenatureand causesoftheresistance.
