CalvaryAnalogy

WhenJesusChristvoluntarilysacrificedHislifeon theCross,saidFather Bourke,Hemeanttheconstantremembranceofitto affectvitallythewhole manneroflivingofthose forwhomHedied.And withdueanalogy,thesame istrueoftheresponsibility ofus,whooweourpresent enjoymentofacivilised modeofliving,tothesacrificeoftheirlivesbyhundredsofthousandsofAustralianswhomthenation commemoratesto-day.

Catholicsdidmorethan commemoratethem;tthey prayedfortheirimmortal souls.IntheCathedral thatmorningtheycameto speedtotheireternal % rewardthemenwhofellon Gallipoli,inFrance,inthe differentspheresoftheMiddleEastandItaly,inNew Guineaandtheislandsof ,thePacific,andmorelately, inKorea.

"Letusgiveaspecial remembrance,"saidthe preacher,"forthosewho languishedanddiedinthe indescribablefilthand squalorofprisoncampsintheFarEast.Letusprayfor thenavalpersonnelwhom thecruelseahasclaimed, andthecourageousairmen whohurtledtodeathin

everygrimtheatreofthe war.

"Maythemeritsof Christ'sowndeath,which were-offerintheMassthis morning,bringtoallof themrefreshment,lightand peace.Inthisway,thanks toGod'sgreatgoodness,we areabletorepaypartof ourimmensedebtto them."

Buttheyhadotherresponsibilitiesbesidesthat ofprayingfortheireternal repose,continuedFather Bourke.IfSt.Paulcould sayofthedeathofJesus Christ:"Christdiedforall forthem,"itcouldbe saidofthosemen'ssacrifices thattheyalsodiedthat thosewholivedafterthem wouldstrive,withequaldevotion,topreserveintime ofpeace,thatforwhich theygavetheirlivesintime ofwar.

ToSafeguardValues

Andforwhatdidthose mengivetheirlives?Unlesshishearerswerehopelesslycynical,theywere surelyagreedthatitwasto safeguardthevaluesofthe past-thevaluesofthelife theyknewandloved-that othersandtheirchildren mightenjoythemtoo.

Perhapsthefullrichness ofthatinheritancewasnot equallygraspedbyallof them,buttheysawsomething,andwhattheysaw theywerewillingtogive theirlivestopreserve.

Patriotismwasavery realvirtue.Itwassomethingthatsprangfrom theirverynatureassocial beings.Itwasaspiritual reality,madeupoftheindividualcontributionsof thevariousmemberswho formedacommunity.In aword,itwastheloyalty thatcamefromfacinglife together.

Itwasnownineyears sincethewarended.When theyexaminedtheinheritanceoftheAustralianway oflife-awayoflifebased onthesanctitiesofhuman liberties-awayoflife whichthosementreasured morethantheirownindividuallives,theycould scarcelyfeelthatasanationtheyhadkeptfaith withtheirnobledead.

NoNaturalHope

ThecoldfactofthematterwasthattheAustraliatheyknewandloved, couldsurviveononlyone condition,namely,avery extraordinaryintervention onthepartofAlmighty God.Foronallthelogic ofhistory,onalltheprecedentssincetheworldbegan,Australiaastheyknew it,couldnothopetosurvive.

Didnoteveryweekbring freshandalarmingreports oftheCommunistcolossus movingeverclosertoour shoresfromAsia?If,as seemedperilouslylikely, Indo-Chinasuccumbed, thenassuredly Siam, Burma,Malaya,andIndon-

esiawouldbeabsorbedinto thevastorbitofCommunism,andwouldthenbe marshalledagainstthis land.

Whocouldanylonger doubt,afterthedramatic eventsofthelastfortnight, thattherewasavirusat workintheirverymidst inAustralia,whichsought toparalysethemostvital meansoftheirdefence?

Whocoulddoubtthat,from thesameinsidioussource, emanatedinfluenceswhose wholeaimwastodominate thechainofunionsthroughouttheland,andthenmisusethosesafeguardsof humanrights,toimplement aCommunistpolicyforthe disruptionofthewhole economyofthecountry?

HowmanyAustralians, tillquiterecently,hadany ideaoftheperilthatencircledthem?Howmany evenyetrealisedit?And whythatincrediblelackof realisminamattersovital tothemselves?

PressIndictment

Oneofthemaininfluenceswhichhadbeendrug- gingthemintoinsensibilitywasthesecularPress.All theduringthepost-waryears distortioninitsreports ofworldevents;itsdeliberatesuppressionofnews aboutthesinisterhappeningsinCommunist-dominatedcountries;Itscalculatedbefoggingofthemindsof Itsreadersaboutthetrue natureofcurrentissues;all thatmustbelaidtothe chargeofmanysectionsof thepress.

FatherBourkesaidhe wouldsaynothingaboutits criminalcontributiontothe breakdownamongourpeopleofmorality,whichwas theveryfibreofanynation.Thefoulscavenging, whichenabledittofoist uponthepublicthosehighlyspicedaccountsofsordid sexcrimesanddeedsof violence,wasonesample ofitsdemoralisinginfluence;theshamelessdegradationofwomankindwhich pervadedsomuchofitsfilthyadvertising,wasan other.

InsidiousForces

Someofthepressunderminedtheveryfoundations ofthemoralcodebyits cynicaltreatmentofreligion,whichwasthevery soulofanation.They themselvesconstantlysaw proofofitsunscrupulous misrepresentationofthings Catholic,andontheother handofitsconspiracyof silenceinregardtothe Church'stremendouspositivecontributiontothesolutionoftheworld'sills.

Itallmounteduptothe conclusionthattheremust beinsidious,satanicforces thathadamajorcontrolof thePress'spolicies,and thatscarcelyanythingwas moreinimicaltothetrue welfareofAustraliathan themoralirresponsibilityof suchalargesectionofthe press.

AnzacDaywastoosacredanoccasiononwhichto indulgeinsentimentalvapouringsaboutpatriotism.It wasratheradayforsoulsearching,when,asanation,andasindividuals, theyexaminedtheirconsciencesinthepresenceofthe

dead,thedeadwhoentrustedintotheirkeeping thenationalinheritance.

AstrueAustralians,their firstdutytotheircountry wastoprayforit,andfor thosewhodirecteditsdestinies.PutasthegreatPope,BlessedPiusX,once said:Prayer,thoughof primaryimportance,must bebackedupbyaction. Catholicswereinapositiontodosomuch,ifonly theyrealisedit,toreally assisttheircountry.Betterthananysectionofthe communitythemeanswere providedtothemofknowingaccuratelythefactsof currenthistory,andthe truesignificancebehindthe facts;andwhatwasfar moreimportant,theywere giventheclearanddefinite principleswhichalone couldsolvethenation's problems.

PositiveCounter

Didtheyrealisethata dutylayoneachofthem whowasworthyofthe nameofCatholicandof Australian,toabsorbsuch knowledgeandtodisseminateitonallsides?Inthat waytheywoulddosomethingpositivetocounteract thecorrosiveinfluenceofa degeneratepress.Inthat way,too,theycouldeffectivelydischargetheirresponsibilitytothosefellow countrymenwhodiedthat theywholivedmightboth enjoytheheritageofa Christianwayoflife,and transmititintacttothe futuregenerations.

Fourhundredparishionersfromawide areaattendedtheopeningofthenewschool atBrunswickJunctionbyHisGracethe ArchbishoponApril11.Comprisingthree largeclassroomsinbrickandtile,thebuildingcost£6,924.

WhentheArchbishoparrivedaccompaniedbythe Rt.Rev.Mgr.J.Wallace andtheRt.Rev.Mgr.J.J. Rafferty,Adm.,hepassed throughaguardofhonour ofschoolchildreninmaroon andblueuniforms.

AftertheArchbishophad blessedtheschool,the Rev.E.McSweeney,parish priest,welcomedHisGrace andtheothervisitors.

FatherMcSweeneysaid thattheSistersofthePresentationOrderhadbeen teachinginBrunswickJunctionfortwoyearsunder greatdifficulties.

Thenewschool,designed byMessrs.Hendersonand Thompson,andbuiltby Messrs.EganandPatten,of Brunswick,hadbeenhighly commended,andwouldfill abadly-feltwantinthedistrict,saidFatherMcSweeney.

HisGracecongratulated FatherMcSweeneyandthe parishionersontheirinitiativeandvisioninbuildingthenewschool.It wouldmeasureupadequatelytothemodernrequirementsregardingschool buildingsandequipment,he said.

Quitealargenumberof thepupilswereofItalian. descent.HisGraceexpressedhisappreciationof thehelpfulness,co-operation,andgenerosityofthe Italianresidentsinthedistrict. TheArchbishopsaidthat statesmenwerebusyplanningareorganisationofthe world.Theywererightin assumingthatthelossof allsuchreorientationwas education.Buttheydid notseemtohavelearned fromhistorythatitwas onlyChristianeducation thatwouldsavetheworld fromchaosandruin!
