HereinPerth,membersof theYoungChristian WorkersMovementwillre ceiveHolyCommunionasa bodyintheirparishchurches,andthentakepartina rallyatHighgateHallon Sundaynight.
Thepurposeofthisdayis essentiallyspiritual,foron thisdayeachmembertakes stockofhimselfspiritually andofhiscontributionto themovement.
Andthesameisbeing donebysomemillions membersofthisinternationalbodyalloverEurope,Asia,AfricaandtheAmericas.
AndbackinBelgiuman ageingpriestmustfeelgratifiedtoseethatthesees ofanideahastakenroot, grownintoalivingforce andspreadoversuchan areain42years.
Y.C.W.Beginnings
Foritwasjustafterhe wasordainedthatFather JosephCardijnrealising thetragedyoftheworking classinthosedarkyears, gatheredasmallbandcf youngworkingladsin Brusselsin1912andsetmit toinvestigatetheproblems oftheyoungworkers.
Butwarbrokeoutand youngFatherCardijnwas imprisonedforprotesting againstthedeportationof youngladstoGermany.
Duringthisperiodofenforcedsolitude,FatherCardijncarefullystudiedthe problemofyouthandcame outwithhisideaofa plannedmovement.
Hisplanwasforamovement,organisedonalocal, regienalandnationalbasis, toformtheyoungworkers intogroupstosafeguari theirearlydaysatwork, watchoverthembothat workandathomeandmake upforthefailureoftheir familiestogivethemat leasttheessentialsofareligious,moral,intellectual andsocialeducation.
Remember,thiswaswartornBelgiuminthe1920's FatherCardijnknewthat theworkingclassworld wasnotwhatitshouldbe andhadtobechanged,but changedfromwithin-in otherwordsencouragedto reformitself.

Andthebestway,hedecided,wastomodifythe outlookandconductofthe workingclassthroughthe workingyouth.
FatherCardijnlefthis prisonandstartedforming hisgroups,firstcalling them"SyndicalistYouth"a nameexchangedin1924forJeunesseOuvriereChretienne-YoungChristian Workers.
Theideacaughtonand by1933themovementnumbered80,000inBelgium.
In1927fiveladsinClichy, aParisianslumarea,start edthemovementinFrance andby1937itsmembers numbered100,000.
Andin1937delegatesof themovementfromEnglandIreland,Lithuania, Holland,Portugal,Canada, ColombiaandMadagascarattendedthePariscongress ofthemovement.

priestcelebratedhisfirs' Masswith25,000Jocists,as theyareknownonthe continent,joininginthe offering.
Lateronthatdaythe enthusiasmwassuchthat CardinalVerdierdescribed theseJocistsas"childrenof aMiracle".

ThestoryofthemovementinAustraliaisoneof ahardstruggleagainst apathyandindifference.
Ithaditsbirthduring thedarkforebodingyearof 1940whenAustraliawasin themidstofagreatwar againstanenemywhich threatenedtoengulfEurope.
Realisingwhatthewar woulddototheyoungmen joiningupandknowingthat Australia'sfuturewoul.l dependonthatgeneration andthenexttheBishops ofAustraliagavetheir blessingtothemovement andthefirstgroupstarted inMelbourne.
TwoyearslaterthemovementstartedinPerth.
Butconditionsforthe workingclassinAustralia werenotthesameasin EuropeandEngland.They werealoteasier.Unions lookedaftertheirmembers. thepovertyandhardship wasnotsowidespreadand

Onlynow,14yearslater arepeoplebeginningtorealisewhatamovementsucn astheY.C.W.candoto helptheyoungworker.
Thesuddenchangefrom thesemi-shelteredlifeofthe schooltothewideopen lifeofthefactoryandofficecanandhavequite easilyprovedmorallyunsettlingfortheyouthjust leftschool.
Andtherepeatedattacks onhismoralcharacter,as hehearstheprofaneand obscenelanguageused freelybyworkmates,as heseesthesalaciousmagazinespassedaroundand jokedaboutfreely,caneasilytearhismoralfibrete piecesandturnhiminto anotherunfortunatebeing likethemselves.
Eveninanofficeheis notsafe.
Unlessthereissomething tocounteractthisunwholesomeimmoralenvironment-theyoungworker willfallfoulofthisenvironment-andtheY.C.W. providesthatsomething.
ChristandWork
Withoneofitsaimsbeing tobringbackChristinto thelivesofyoungworkers, themovementtrainsyoung wqrkerstore-christianise theirownlivesandthen trainsthemhowtochange theenvironmentinwhich theyworkandplayandfinallytrainsthemasleaderstofighttobring Christintothelivesoftheir fellowworkers.
Theyarenot"biblethumpers".Theyaretrainedyouths,withtheconvictionthateveryoneoftheir fellowworkershasan eternaldestinyandaspark ofdecencyinhimandthey workonthatsparktrying tofanitupintosomething biggerandbrighter.
Theytakeanactiveinterestintheirjobrealizing thatworkwasgivendignity byChristthecarpenter.
Atthesametimethey seethattheyhavegood conditionstoworkin,and seethatneithertheynor theirfellow-workersare exploited.Thismeanstakinganactiveinterestin unionaffairs.
Andfinallyinthebranches,cleanhealthyrecreation andsociallifeisprovided sothatthegoodworkdone inthefactoryortheoffice isnotwastedduringleisurehours.
Everydaythisgoodwork goeson.
Membershipofthemovementisnumericallysmall butitsinfluenceisgreathowmuchmorecouldbe achievediftherewere moretrainedleaders.
Yetdespitethepraises andblessingsofPopesPius XIandXII,themovement stillstrugglesagainstignoranceandindifference.
PerhapsInternational Y.C.W.Daymightbean opportunetimeforparents tospendalittletimemeditating.

Thebeardedpriest,a slim,palefigurewearing threerowsofWorldWar medalsonhisbreast,was surroundedbyabattery ofcameramenassoonas heappearedontheplatformtospeakfortheParliamentaryAssociationfar WorldGovernment.
Actually,theabbehadlittletosayaboutworld government,ofwhichheis akeenadvocate.Thecer.tralideaofhistalkwas thatmenmustbeprevented fromignoringthesuffering thatarisesfromthelackof elementarynecessitiesby bringingthatsufferingout intotheopen.Hesaidthat thiscanonlybedoneeffectivelybythosewhohave sharedwhattheywishedto reveal.

TheWorldUnion'sviews onequalpayforequal workandoneconomicopportunitiesforolderwomen, werepresentedbyits permanentrepresentative, CatherineSchaefer.Miss Schaefersaidequitydemandsthesamepayforthe sameworkandthatnonadherencetothisprinciple increasestheemployment ofwomentothedetriment ofmaleworkerswhoare headsoffamilies,andlow wagesforheadsoffamilies areapttocontinueonthe theorythatthewife'swages willcomplementthoseof herhusband.
"Onthelevelofinternationaltrade,"MissSchaefer stated,"non-applicationof theprincipleofequalremunerationpenalisesunfairlythosecountrieswhich havemadethisefforttowardsocialjustice,since theirpricesarenecessarily higherthanthoseofcountrieswhichexploitwoman's labour."
Discussingthesubjectof olderwomenworkers,Miss Schaeferrecommended creationineachcountryof aWomen'sLabourService ordepartmentwhichwould studytheproblemofolder womenworkers,andthereviewofexistingpension systemsinvariouscountries withaviewtoincorporatButfromnowon"wemust realiseandstatethatitisa muchsmallerthing."Now wariswagedbydestroying itsowntheatre,however large.
Fromthebeginningofits existencetheChurchhas beentryingtolimitbothin timeandspacetheevilsof war,thearticlesaid.The Churchtriedtosafeguard cultivatedfields,promote truceandpeace,andprotectworkers,womenand children,Withthespread oftheevileffectsofgunpowerandmechanics,the appealsoftheChurchbecamemoreimpassioned.
