Newshasbeenreceived fromIrelandofthedeathof Mrs.BrigidMcKeon, MotherofRev.M.McKeon,DirectorofthePropagationoftheFaith,t'ria deceasedladydiedather homeatDrummin,Westport,Co.Mayo.

Thoughshefellillabout tenmonthsagothenews ofherdeathwasnotexpected.Herhusbandand sevenofherninechildren arelefttomournherdeath.

FatherMcKeonarrivedin theArchdiocesein1948,and havingservedascurateat MaylandsandtheCathedral,wasappointedDiccesanDirectorofthePropagationoftheFaithearly thisyear.

Anotherwayinwhich OurLadycooperatesis throughherintercession. Shehasbeencalled"suppliantomnipotence"becauseofhercloseintimacy withherDivineSonwho willrefusehernothing.

Ourconfidenceisallthe moresecurewhenwerealizethatherSonlovesus withanInfinitelove,but thatitpleasesHimto honourherinthefulfilling ofherrequestsinourbehalf.

Finally,Maryhelpsthe workoftheChurchbyher

officeasMediatrixofall graces.Everygracewhich menreceivefromGodis throughthehandsofMary.

AsJesusChrist,the Fountainofallgraces, cametousthroughMary, soeveryothersupernatural giftofGodcomesbyway ofthesamechannel.

FromthedateofAdam's fallatthedawnofhuman history,preparationswere madeforthereconciliation ofmanwithGodthrough Christ.Inthefullnessof time,theArchangelGabriel wassenttotheImmaculateVirginMaryandspoke toherthewordswhich, downthroughthecenturies, Christianshavenever ceasedtorepeat:"Hail,full ofgrace..."-andherreply: "Beholdthehandmaidof theLord;beitdonetome accordingtothyword."

Co-Redemptrix

Thoughmovedbyanefficaciousgrace,thatconsentwasfreelygiven, promptedbyapurelove ofGodandmansogreat astobebeyondourcomprehension.GodtheSon assumedahumannature.

Withoutceasingto God,Hebecametrulymac; singularinperson,twofold innature.Withoutceasing tobeavirgin,Marybecame theMotherofGod.

Itwasthusthroughthe consentofMarythatthe Divineandhumannatures inChristwerewed,that the"HeadoftheBody whichistheChurch"was conceived.Fromthebeginning,then,Marywas anactivecooperatorinthe workofourreconciliation withGod.

ThemysteryoftheIncarnationwasthehistorical beginningofourreconciliation.Butforitscomphtion,accordingtoGod's plan,theSacrificeofthe Crosswascalledfor.

Theworkofunityisa workofcollaborationwith Godforthesalvationof souls.Forittobeeffective, prayermustbeconjoined toeveryapostolicwork.

Inordinarytimesthe workisdifficultenough; intheseevildaystheobstaclesareespeciallygrave. Thepresenceofdiabolic tyrannyovermillionspreventsaccesstothem.

Manyofthosewhomwe canreachphysicallyare heldbackbyprejudice, doctrinalerrors,evenvices ofeverydescription.But letusnotbedisheartened. God,who-commandsthe work,willgiveusthemeans tofulfillit.Rememb,x thoseotherwordsfromthe Cross:"BeholdthyMother."

RedTreatmentOf CaptiveChildren

VENICE,Italy.-Whathoshappenedto the28,000GreekchildrenwhowerekidnappedfromtheirhomesbyCommunistsduring theGreekcivilwarof1946-49andbrought totheSovietUnionandRedsatellitecountriestobeindoctrinatedinMarxistideology?

Apartialanswerwasprovidedherewhen1,228"hostages"releasedbytheHun garianGovernmentarrived hereintwotrainsontheir wayhometoGreece.The majorityofthemwere youngsterswhostillrememberthesuddentragedywhichengulfedthere whentheyweretakenfrom theirhomestobeginanew lifeinastrangeland.

OurBlessedLadywasan intimatepartnerofChrist intheworkoftheRedemption,tosuchanextentthat sheisalsocalledthe"CuRedemptrik"ofthehuman race.

Oneofthegreatprojects oftheYearofMaryisto begherfortheconquest overevilinpersonala/13 sociallife,andfortheadvanceoftheChurch'swork throughouttheworld.

LetusimitatetheApostleswho,intheUpperRoom atJerusalem,prayedin unionwiththeMotherof Jesus.DuringtheMarian Yearespecially,letuspray inunionwithMarythat allmaybeone-asSt. Paulsays,"oneLord,one faith,oneBaptism;one GodandFatherofall,who isaboveall,andthroughoutall,andonusoll."

DevotiontoMary OldInIreland

InhisLentenPastoral whichhedevotestothe MarianYear,HisEmminenceCardinalD'Alton, ArchbishopofArmaghand PrimateofAllIreland statesthatheisconfident thatnowherewilltheHoly Father'sappealmeetwitha morespontaneousandmore generousresponsethan"in ourowncountry,which almostfromthemomentit receivedthepricelessheritageoftheFaithhasbeen notedforitsreverenceand loveoftheBlessedMother ofGod."CardinalD'Altan continues:

Providedthatwealways keepinmindthatherrole wassecondaryandsubordinatetothatofChrist,we caneasilyseethatshepreparedtheVictimforthe Sacrificeandthatbyher unspeakablesufferingsat Calvary,sheaddedher ownmeritstothoseofher Sonforourreconciliation withGod.

48HOURS'"SOLITARY"

Someofthechildrenrevealedthattheirteachers hadnohesitationinresortingtoseveredisciplinary measurestoeradicateevery traceoftheirearlyChristiantraining.

A17-year-oldboyfrom Florinarelated,forexam-' ple,thathewaspunished manytimesforcrossing himselfbeforesittingdown totable,andforkneelingin prayerbeforegoingto bed. Hestatedthatwhenhepersistedinthesepractices,he wasreprimandedandsent toanotherarea,where closerwatchcouldbekept everhim.

AnN.C.W.C.correspondenthadanopportunityto interviewatleast50ofthe youngpeoplebeforethey embarkedforEgoumenitsa inNorth-WesternGree,ee whererepresentativesofthe, GreekGovernmentandof thedissidentOrthodox ChurchinGreeceextended anofficial"welcomehome" totherepatriates. Abouthalfofthechildren wereunder10.Withthem wereadultsandyouthswho werereturningwithbitter memoriesofyearsofmiseryinRedslavelabour camps.Howmanychildrea hadsuccumbedtotheteachingsoftheiranti-Christian mentorswasproblematical. Butagoodlynumber,it appearedcertain,werereturningtotheirparentsin realneedofre-educationin theChristianbeliefsfrom whichtheyhadbeenweaned.

TAUGHTATHEISM

One18-year-oldboyfrom Yanitza,NorthernGreece, confirmedbyhisremarks howthoroughlythepsychologicalbranchoftheCominform,whichwaschargedwiththeCommunistindoctrinationofthechildren, hasbeendoingitswork. "Wehavebeentaughtby Communistteachers,"he said,"thatthereisnoGod, thatJesuswasjustamythicalperson."

Otherstoldofeffortstc impressuponthemthat "theworshipofStalinbelongstoourage,theageof Communism."Theysaid theyweretaughttohatethe "ChristianbourgeoisGod" ofthePope.

"Thatisalessonitmust havelearnedfromthelips ofourNationalApostle.A yearbeforehewascommandedtoundertakehis missiontoIreland,was heldthecelebratedCouncilofEphesus,whichvindicatedMary'sclaimtothe title,'MotherofGod',and condemnedtheheresyof Nestoriuswhomaintained thatsheshouldbeacknowledgedonlyasthemother ofthemanChrist.

"Thedecisionofthe Councilwasgreetedbyan extraordinaryoutburstof popularenthusiasm.Such memorieswerefreshinthe mindofSt.Patrickwhen hecameamongustobegin thelaboursofhisapostolate". Irelandcouldfeelproud thattheFeastofMary's Conceptionwascelebrated thereasearlyastheeighth century,ifnotearlier, clearlypointingtothe beliefthattherewas somethingextraordinary aboutit.

ManyIrishFranciscans, includingaformerArchbishopofArmagh,Hugh MacCaughwell,wereintrepidchampionsofMary's ImmaculateConception.

Someoftheotherchildrensaidthattheyhadoften beenwarnedagainstmakingthesignofthecrossor maintainingotherpious practices.Theysaidthe, hadbeenplacedindare cellsfor48hourswithoet foodorwater,whiletheir Communistteacherstauntedthembyshouting:"Go aheadandpraytoyour ChristianGodtosetyou free."

Afewofthechildrensaid theyhodspentsometime withPolishfamilies.The) saidthatCatholicpriests wouldcalluponthemfrom timetotimeandteach themprayers,meanwhile encouragingthemtohope andprayforthedaywhen theywouldbereunitedwith theirlovedones.

CHEERFUL

Anumberofthechildrenwhoweresenttowork intheHungarianlabour campsastheygrewolder saidtheytriedtoeasetheir lonelinessbyprayingfor liberation.Thesechildren reportedtheyhadbeenMe pressedbythecheerfulat-. titudeoftheGreekgrownupsinthecampswhoremainedstaunchtotheir religionTheysaidtheattitudeofthesebelievers wasinsharpcontrastt) thatofGreekCommunist refugeeswhohadtofind workinthecampsor starve.TheGreekCommunists,theysaid,hadno hopeofafuturelifeand wereutterlycalloustoeach other'ssufferings.

Evenamongthosechildrenwhostillclungtothe religiontaughtthemby theirparentsthereseemed tobestrongevidenceofthe confusionanddoubtsown intheirminds. Theyrelatedthatnextto God,theChristianconcepts ofmarriageandfamilywere primarytargetsoftheRed instructors.Theysaidthey weretaughttohatetheir "primitiveandbackward parents,"andthe"super.

"Youtelluswemustbow ourheadattheNameof Jesus,"askedonetinytot, "whydon'twebowourhead$ attheNameofGod,since JesusisGod?"Sister'sturn nowtoanswer.

TheclaimmadebytheChristianHeraldthatmorethan4,000,000Catholicshave joinedProtestantchurchesinthepast10 yearsistotallyunconvincing,bothbecause theevidencepresentedisinadequateand becausetheclaimcontradictsknownfacts.

Theauthorsofthefollowingarticlearemembenofthefacultyofthe CatholicUniversityof America,Washington, D.C.Dr.Furfeyisan eminentsociologistand statisticalanalyst.Dr. Mulvaneyhasrecently concentratedonthestudy atCatholicpopulation statisticsintheUnited States.

(TheChristianHerald, aninterdenominationalmagazinepromotingevangelicalChristianity,carried anarticle,basedonasurh.vey,whichclaimsthat 4,144,366Catholicswere "converted"toProtestantism inthelast10years.

Thearticleseekstoprove that,because1,071,897Protestantsarereportedto haveenteredtheCatholic Churchinthelastdecade, onemustnotassumethat thetrafficin"conversions' was"alloneway".Thearticlesaysthat,evenallowingforerror,thefigureon Catholic-to-Protestant change"couldhardlybe lessthantwotothreemi!lionsandinallprobability runsclosertofivemillions.")

InvalidBasis

TheChristianHerald's claimisbasedonaquestionnaire"sentto25,000" Protestantministersin23 cities,outofthe181,000 Protestantministersinall partsoftheUnitedStates.

Ofthose25,000towhom questionnairewassent, only2,219replied,whichis aratherlowproportionof respondents.

Themethodbywhichthe questionnairereplieswere statisticallyanalyzedisnot altogetherclear.Mentionis itmadeof"aprojectionto thetotalnumberofchurchservingpastorsintheUn:tedStates."

Apparentlythismeans thatifthenumberofrepliesequalled,sayoneper centofthetotalof"churchservingpastors"inthe country,thenthenumber of"converts"claimedon thosereplieswasmultiplied byabout100toestimate thetotalnumberofCatholic-Protestant"converts"in thelast10years.

Bysomesuchmethod,it seemsanestimateof4,144,366wasreached.

Togetvalidresultsbya mailquestionnaireisdifficult.First,itwouldhave tobeproved,inthepresentcase,thatthe25,000 ministerswhoweresent questionnairesweretypical ofthe181,000ministersin thecountry.Secondly,it wouldhavetobeproved thatthosewhoactually repliedweretypicalofthe 25,000whowerequestioned.

Noevidenceisgiventhat eitheroftheserequirements wasmetbythesurvey.It hasbeentheconstantex-

NowtheRomeDiocesan tribunalhasjudgedthe priest'scuretobemiraculous,andsubmitteditfor furtherexaminationbythe SacredCongregationof Ritesinthecanonisation causeofBlessedVincenzo Pallotti,founderofthePallottinecommunity,whowas beatifiedatthebeginningof theHolyYear.

TheHolyYearhadbeen amemorableoneforFather Turowski.OnJanuary22, hehadbeenpresentwhen thefounderofhiscommunitywasbeatifiedinSt. Peter'sBasilicaonthe100th. anniversaryofhisdeath.In thefollowingJune,Father TurowskileftRomefora routinevisitationtothePallottinehousesinhisnative Poland.

WhilehewasinPoland, HisHolinessPopePiusXII namedhimCoadjutorBishopofCzestochowa.But beforehisconsecrationcould takeplacetheCommunist governmentinWarsaworderedhimdeportedfrom thecountry,butsaidhe couldapplyforre-entry afterbecomingaBishop.

EarlyinDecember,whenit becameclearthatthePolishgovernmenthadnointentionoflettinghimreturn toPoland,FatherTurowski requestedandwasgiven permissionfromtheHoly Seetoresignhisepiscopal nomination.

Inthesamemonth,Father Turowskibecameseriously ill.Whenhiscondition continuedtogrowworse, theSistersinthehospital beganofferingprayersto

heandhisfollowersbecameknownasthe"Millerites." AsMarch21,1843,drew near,terrificexcitement prevailedamongstthem; butalas,thedaycameand went, andnothinghappened.Millerwentbacktohis calculations,checkedthem over,anddiscoveredthat hehadmistakentheyear.

March21,1844,wasthe correctdate.

Whenthat,too,failed,he movedthedateforwardto October22,1844.Failure thistimedestroyedhisconfidenceinhisownpredictions,andhedeclaredthat thesecondadventwould certainlytakeplacesoon, butthathecouldnotsay when.

OnApril29,1845,the MilleritesheldaConference atAlbany,N.Y.,todefine theirviewsandplanfor thefuture.Theydecided uponacongregationalbasis oforganization,anddrew upastatementoffaith whichincludedbeliefin theBibleonly,intheimminentsecondcomingof Christ,intheoverthrowof thePapacy,andinthe earlyestablishmentofthe Christonearth. Nodatewassetforthe secondadvent;butitis certainthatiftheyhad beentoldthattheworld wouldstillbegoingonas usualin1950,overahundredyearslater,theywould have credulousbeencompletelyinandscornful.

Itistobenoted,also,thattheMilleriteshadnc ideathattherewasany- thing tianwrongwiththeChrisobservanceofSunday. Infact,Adventistswhohad takenuptheobservanceof SaturdayinsteadofSunday,wereexcludedbythe AlbanyConference.

In1858anotherConferencewasheldatBoston wherethename"American MillennialAssociation"was adopted,tobealteredafew yearslaterto"TheEvangelicalAdventistAssociation."Butthroughallthese changesthenumberof adherentswassteadilydiminishing. ThefailureofWilliam Miller'sprophecythatthe secondadventofChrist wouldoccuronOctober22, 1844,seemedtoogreatan obstaclefortheAdventist movementevertoovercome. Newlife,however,came withtheremarkablediscoverybyoneHiramEdson, ofPortGibson.Hedeclared thatWilliamMiller'scalculationswerecorrectafter all.ButMillerhadmisunderstoodthenatureof Christ'ssecondcoming. HiramEdsongota"revelation"thatthe"sanctuaryto becleansed,"accordingto Danielviii,14,"isinHeaven,notonearth."HequotedHebrews(yin,1-2),"We haveaHighPriest in theheavensaministerof thesanctuary."

OnOctober22,1844,he declared,Christenteredthe heavenlysanctuaryto cleanseit!Itistruethat ChristenteredHeavenat theascension;but-said Hiram-Hedidnotthen entertheInnerSanctuary. Thateventtookplacein 1844,whenChristbegan investigatingtherecordsof allmankind,alreadydead orstillliving. In1884Mrs.EllenG. White-ofwhomweshall seemorelater-wrotein explanationofthis,"The judgmentisnowpassingin thesanctuaryabove.Forty yearshasthisworkbeen inprogress.Soon-none knowshowsoon-itwill passtothecasesoftheliving"(S.P..Vol.4,p.315). MetaphoricalUse

Inneithercasehasa crownofgoldorflowers beenplacedonthehead.It issimplyametaphorical wayofexpressingtheglory orrewardofachievement. Theterm"coronationof OurLady,"refersalsotoher title"QueenofHeaven."

JustasChristisKingor supremeLordofHeaven,so HisMotherisQueen,but thatdoesnotmeanthat eitherwearsaphysical crown.Thatismerelyour human,imperfect,andmetaphoricalwayofrepresentingafact.Or,rather,itis difficultforustounder-

standsomethingunlesswe canvisualiseorimaginethe objectofourthought.

Soitisnaturalforus, whenwetrytocontemplate thejoyandtriumphof ChristandHisMotherwhen theywerereceivedwith suchjubilationinheaven aftertheirtriumph,toimagineorpictureitafterthe traditionalmannerofan earthlyherowhousedtobe crownedintriumphonhis returnfromagreatvictory.

NotUnusual

Trynottobeundulydisturbedbythehumanearthlyrepresentationofthe scenewhich.yousay,distractsandannoysyou.You arenotatallunusual,still less,uniqueinthusimaginingacelestialsceneinan earthlymanner.Itisthe bestanyofuscandointhe circumstancesandquite naturaltous.

Thegloriousmysteries presentafurtherdifficulty toourimagination,inas muchastheydealwiththe glorifiedbodyoftheRisen ChristorofHisMother,a subtle,luminousunsubstantialthingwhichsuddenly seemstocomeandgo,and disappearsthroughwalls andlockeddoors.

Itisverydifficultforour imagination,orpowerofrepresenting,tograpplewith suchatenuoussubstance.

Youwillobjectthatthose whoinreligionhold"the otherside"neednotbeliars; theymaybeatmostmistaken.Ithoroughlyagree withyouthattheyarein sinceregoodfaith.Still theyaremistaken,anda mistakeisanerror,and whatistheuseofhearing argumentsinfavourof error?

whateverstepyoutakein whateverdirectionisbound tobringyouneareryour friend.Nowyourfriend Truthmustlivesomewhere, orelsehavenofixedabode atall.Ifthelatter-ifhe livesinfactintheNowhere -thenwhateverstepsyou takearelost,andlistening toanyonediscussingitis purelossoftime.

Manypeoplearedeceivedbythatcrypticsaying thattruthhasmanyaspects,asadiamondhas manyfacets.Thesaying mayberightlyunderstood. forseveralstatements,if notcontradictory,mayapplytothesametruth.But itisoftenforgottenthatin ordertoseeanyfacetsthere mustfirstbeadiamond-a hardandsoliddiamond.So alsotruthisahardand solid,unchangeablething. anditisnotourthinking thatmakesitso.

Thereisnostudentof grammar,mathematics,history,physics,chemistry,or medicinewhodoesnotacceptinfaith,i.e.,onthetestimonyofteachersorof previousscholars,animmensecorpusofdoctrine.

Further,theothertwo sourcesof information whichthescientistemploys areequallyfallible.His senses,orexperience,may leadhimtoerror,andhis intellectmayjumptowrong conclusions.Hencenot onesourceofhisknowledge isabsolutelytrustworthy.

Ontheotherhand,when Godteachessomething,I canbeperfectlycertainthat itistrueandthatIcanrely onHisword.Hecannot bedeceived.andHecannot wishtodeceiveme.

Hence,Divinefaith,i.e., acceptingatruthonthe wordofGod,ifandwhenI amsureHehasspokenit, isafarhigher,moretrustworthyandmorereasonable sourceofinformationthan anysourcewhichthescientistcommands.

Perhapsyouareunder theimpressionthatpeople neverreallyarriveatreligioustruth!Butifthatbe so,whatistheuseofhearinganyside?Perhapsyou thinkthat,thoughreligious truthisnotfullyandcompletelyascertainable,yetit canbepartiallyandapproximatelyarrivedat,and themoresideswehear,the closerwearelikelytoget tothetruth.Butthissurelyisimpossibleifthesides areoppositeorcontradictory. Letustakeanexample. Youaresearchingfora friend.Youdonotknow whereheis.Youlivein Como,asuburbofPerth. Wecanseewhyheisso; whyheisabletoplot-out withoutpityorcompassion hisvictim'storture,cold,v analysingtheeffectsofhis sadisticdevices,untilthe finalexultantmomentwhen thevictimbreaksanddisintegratesbeforehim.Such Evilasseenhereisofan orderfaradvancedbeyond thatofsensualgratification. BERLIN,March27(NC).-TheCommunistregimeofEasternGermany-now grantedfull"sovereignty"byitsSovietmasters-istakingnewmeasurestostrengthen itscontroloverschools

Thereareindicationsthat theregime-detestedbythe greatmajorityofthe18 millionpeopleunderits rule-feelsithasnotbeen rigorousenoughinthefield ofpubliceducationand nowdeterminedtobring schoolsintofullconformity withthecommunistpattern.

Shortlybeforethenationalconventionofthe EastGermanCommunist Party,scheduledtoopen March30,theregimeissuedadecreedeclaring thattheaimofalleducationisthetrainingofcommunists.Itdenouncesthose parentsandteacherswho stillclingtothe"reactionary"beliefthatpartypoliticsmustbekeptoutof schools.

Teachersarebeingsubjectedtotheclosestscrutiny.Asaresultmany have'wendismissedwhile othersretiredvoluntarily becausetheyfounditimpossibletocontinueworkingunderthepresentconditions.Particularsuspicion isdirectedtowardthose whostillteachreligionin schools.

Thisrenewedpressure ontheschoolsispartoftha systematiccampaignto makeEasternGermanya 100-percentcommunistsatellitestate.Amongreligiousgroups,thefirstto feelthisnewpressureis theEastGermanEvangelicalChurch.Itshead,Bishop OttoDibelius,recentlytold theAll-Germansynodheld inSpandau,nearBerlin,thatCommunistsupervision ofministersandreligious serviceshasbecomemore rigorous,afterasix-month periodoflesseningtension.

Catholicsbelievethatthis newpressureonthe churcheswillnotremain confinedtotheProtestants.

Whilesystematicallyincreasingpressureonorganizedreligion,theRedregimeatthesametime seekstocreatetheimpressionabroad-particularlyin westernGermany-that fullreligiousfreedomexists incommunistEasternGermany.

Itisgenerallyconsidered asapartofthiscampaign thattheRedregimesuddenlyannouncedithad givenpermissionforthe all-GermanannualProtestantcongress(Kirchentag) tobeheldintheSoviet ZonecityofLeipzingnext July7to11.

Thispermissionhadbeen previouslygrantedbutwas suddenlyrevokedonthe eveoftheBerlinFourPowerConferencelast month.

WestGermany's lorKonradAdenauercalledthesuddengrantoffull "sovereignty"totheEast Germancommunistregime bytheSovietsanoldtrick "oftheslySovietpoliticians tobringmoredelusionto theEastGermans."

WhentheCommunist cadresinsistedthateveryonejoinmutual-aidteams topooltheirlandandtools, LaoWangwasatfirstreluctant.Whatwonhim overwerethestoriesinthe papersproclaimingtheproduceofthemutual-aid teamsassuperiorinqualityandquantity.Hisown cropturnedoutwell,and hewasthinkingpleasantly oftheaddedprofitthatwas comingfromhisextramou, whenthefirstshockofa longandpainfulreawakeninghithim.
