Freemasonrybecame prominentatthebeginning ofthe18thcenturyandas earlyas1738wefindit condemnedbyPopeClementXIIbecauseofits naturalism,itsinscrutable secrecy,itscomprehensive andterrifyingoathsand ritual.

Sincethattime,membershipofFreemasonryhas beenprohibitedtoCatholicsunderpenaltyofexcommunication.Butitis notclearthatthisprohibitionwasfullyunderstood forsometime.

ThoughMozartwasassociatedwithFreemasonry heseemstohaveremained apractisingCatholic.

DismayedbyLodge

Awriterinthe"EncyclopaediaBrittanica"notes inreferencetoMozart's membershipofMasonry: "Freemasonrydidnot,at thattime,involvethecen sureoftheCatholicChurch, orMozartwouldcertainlyhaverenouncedit".Thisis notabsolutelycorrect.

Theprohibitionwasthere since1738,but,ashasbeen remarked,itsfullimplicationsmaynothaveheel understood.Itisinteresting tonotethatMozart'smembershipofMasonrydidnot ensureforhim,fromthe Brotherhood,afuneralcortegeandanhonouredgrave.

Itseemsevidentthat Mozartwasneveran enthusiasticmember. Perhaps,likesomeofhis compatriots,suchas Goethe,Lessing,Herder,he wasdisappointedanddismayedbywhatheexperiencedintheLodgelife.
