R.:Yes,theredoesseem tobesomeobscurity.Letus takethecontextfirst. In thisveryfamouschapterSt. PaulistiltingattheCofortheirstrange viewsabouttheresurrection ofthebodyonthelastday anditssubsequentdeath, lessness.

SomeoftheCorinthians, apparentlyheldtheold Greekviewthatwhilethe soulisimmortal, thebody perisheswithdeathand wouldneverriseagainin glory.Others, itwould seem,-thoughthiserror wasnotsocommonamong them-thoughtthatonl,y thoseChristianswhowere aliveatChrist'ssecond comingonJudgmentday wouldreceiveimmortality; thosewhodiebeforethat perishaltogether. Bothoftheseerrors, particularlythefirst(which deniedtheresurrectionof thebody)St.Paultakesup ashisfinalsubjectinthis letter.Heremindsthemthat thecentralfactoftheir creedisthatChristrose fromthedead;"sowith Christallwillbebroughtto life...,whatissowncorruptible,risesincorruptible.

Nowwecometoyour difficulty,verse51.There aretworeadings;theLatin vulgatewhichintheDouayRheimstranslationgives: "Behold,Itellyouamystery:weshallallindeed riseagain,butweshallnot allbechanged".Theunderlyingideahereisfairly plain,namely:-attheend oftheworldtheresurrectionfromthedeidwillincludepracticallyallmankind. Thosestillaliveonthelast daywillformonlyavery smallandthereforenegligibleproportion;hencethey areleftoutofaccounthere, asinHebrewsIX.27.

Theother,andprobably preferable,readingfrom betterGreekmanuscripts runs:"Weshallnotallfall asleep(ie.die),butwe shallallbechanged."Here thenegative,orword"not", istransferredfromthefirst tothesecondphrase,and themeaningisthis:-not alloftheelectorsaved willdie;thoseofthemwho arealiveatthelastdaywill havetheirbodiesglorified withoutpassingthrough death.

Hencetosumup:-the Vulgatestressesthatonly thebodiesofthejustwillbe glorified,whethertheydie previouslyornot;theother readingstressesthatsome willnotdie,buttheywill beglorifiednonetheless.

Perhapsyourdifficultyis thatyouare suggestionshockedbythis ofHolyScripture thatnoteveryonewilldie, andyoumaythinkitcontradictsSt.Paulinanother place,forinstancewhenhe writestotheRomans(V. 12),whichreads:"Itwas throughonemanthatguilt cameintotheworld;and, sincedeathcameowingto guilt,deathwashandedon toallmankindbyoneman."

ButSt.Paulheremerely statesthegeneralprinciple thateveryoneismortal, withoutproclaimingactual deathinthecaseofeachindividual.IndeedtheApostlesCreedconfirmsthebelief thattherewillbesomepersonslivingintheworldat theSecondComingof Christ:"FromthenceHe shallcometojudgethelivingandthedead."
