Werecentlypublishedasurveyofthe increaseinnumbersofchildrenenrolledin Catholicschools.Therewasanincreaseof 55%inthenumberofchildrenbetween 1939and1953,theenrolmentsrisingfrom 10,372to16,174.
Therehasbeennecessarilyasubstantialincreaseintheaccommodationfortheaugmentedenrolment.From1939tothe presentday,£422,000 hasbeenspentinthe Archdioceseonnewbuildingsalone.
Thisfigureisarrivedat simplybytotallingthe58 contractsletfornew schools,extensions,orreplacements.Itdoesnotincludethecostofequipping classroomswithdesks, classroomfurniture;the costofrenovatingand maintainingexistingbuildings. Therefore,totakeone example,thecostsareexcludedoftheexpansionof C.B.C.,St.George's-terrace, whichintheperiodunder reviewhasincreaseditsenrolmentfrom250to650.
Ofthe58separateventuresinbuilding,30have beennewschools;theremaining28representadditionstoexistingbuildings.
Boys'schoolsrepresentsix ofthe30newopenings;the remainderofthenew schoolsaregirls'ormixed schools.
Theexpenditureof£422, 000onnewschoolbuildings alone,tendstocreatetwo impressionsinthepublic mind,onefortunate,thesecondlessfortunate.The firstimpressionisthatthe Churchcancommandvitality,energyandgenerosity. Thesecondimpressionis thattheChurchhasenormousreservesofwealth.
Thesecondimpressionis regrettable.Thetruefactis thatthisexpansionispossible,becausethegenerosity oftheCatholicpeoplehas beenmortgagedinadvance. IndividualCatholicsshould makecleartotheirnonCatholicfriendsthatthe Churchbuildsonthesafe assetoffuturegenerosity, andnotonfictitiousreservesofwealth.
Ifthispieceofeducation wereimpartedthepublic generallymightfeelmore sympathyforourclaimsfor ameasureofgovernment assistance.

AccordingtoFatherIribarren,Spaincouldaffordto send2000secularpriests,2000 regularpriests,and6000religiousintotheSpanish-speakingregionsofCentral andSouthAmerica.He wrote: "Whatwouldhappenin Spainif,allofasudden,we deprivedourselvesQf10per cent.ofourpersonnel?Probablynothing.Andwhat wouldhappeninSpanish Americaifweweretomake thisgenerousgestureofsendingthese10.000personnel? Probablymuch."
FatherIribarrenplacedthe numberofpriestsinSpainat 29,580-22.087secularand7493 regular-andthenumberof brothersandnunsat17.205 and63.267,respectively.He saidtheover-alltotalof 110.052Spaniardsinreligious lifedoesnotincludeSpanishmissionariessenttoremote lands.

Presbyteriansareexpectedtobelievethatthisorganization,whilsthumanly constructed,isendowed withdivineauthority.Any judgmentofthe"General Assembly"istobe'accepted asfinal,andnotsubjectto reviewbyanyothertribunalonearth.
ThePresbyterianisprobablythemostauthoritarianofalltheProtestant Churches;andifthetheory wereheldinrealitybyits members,theywoulddiffer fromtheCatholics,notso muchontheprinciplesof authority,butmerelyasto whatshouldbetheorgans ofthatauthority.
Butitwouldbetoomuch tosaythatPresbyterians haveanyfaithatallin theirChurchasaChurch comparabletothatwhich CatholicshaveinthehistoricCatholicChurchofthe centuries.

ThereisnotoneworldwidePresbyterianChurch. NationalChurchesarequite independentofoneanother.
Itistruethat,in1877,an "AllianceofReformed ChurchesholdingthePresbyterianSystem"wasestablished,withmeetingsof representativesfromall countrieseveryfouryears. ButinnosenseisthisagoverningbodybindingPresbyterianChurchesinfoorganicunity.Atbest,the meetingsofthe"Alliance" areregardedasusefulconferences.
Intheirworship,PresbyterianChurchesarenot boundtoanyfixedliturgicalformsorprayers.
