Itwouldnotbepossible,insoshortan articleasthis,togiveanexhaustiveaccount ofPresbyterianteachings.ButsomementionmustbemadeoftheattitudeofPresbyterianstotheBible,theChurch,theMinistry,theCreeds,andtheSacraments. withtraditionalteachings fromtheverybeginningis becomingmoreandmore evidenttothem.
Presbyterianshavebeen outstandingintheiracceptanceoftheBiblealoneas theonlyauthorityonwhich truereligioncanbebased, andforthemostpartthey experienceaprofounddistasteforanytraditionsprior tothosedatingfromCalvin.
But,althoughtheystill subscribenominallytothe "Bible-Only"theory,many modernPresbyteriansare becominghesitant.
Theyarebeginningto realisethattheChurchexistedbeforealineofthe NewTestamentwaswritten, andthattheearliestChristiansobtainedtheirknowledgefromtheteachingsof theChurch, notfromthe readingoftheBible.
TheirscholarshaverecognisedalsothattheNew TestamentisnotasystematicaccountoftheChristianrevelation, thatitsbooks omittedmuchthatwasgenerallyknown, andthatthey themselveswouldliketo discovertheadditionalmatterfromthestudyofearly traditions.

InitsdoctrineoftheministryPresbyterianismholds auniqueplaceamongstthe ProtestantChurches.
MartinLuther,inrejectingtheauthorityofthe Churchfortheauthorityof theBible,repudiatedthe priesthoodasithadhitherto beenaccepted.Hemaintainedthepriesthoodofall believers,totheexclusion ofanysacerdotalcastereceivingspecialpowers abovethoseoftheordinary faithful.

NowJohnCalvinbegan byactingonthatprinciple. Hehimselfwasbutalayman;and,aswehaveseen, in1534hecelebratedthe Lord'sSupperintheEvangelicalChurchatPoitiers. But,in1536,whenhepub, lishedhis"Institutes,"h. hadconvincedhimselfthat therewasaspecialministerialofficeintheChurch, thatof"presbyters."
