WhatPresbyteriansHoldOfBible

Ministry,.ChurchandSacraments

Itwouldnotbepossible,insoshortan articleasthis,togiveanexhaustiveaccount ofPresbyterianteachings.ButsomementionmustbemadeoftheattitudeofPresbyterianstotheBible,theChurch,theMinistry,theCreeds,andtheSacraments. withtraditionalteachings fromtheverybeginningis becomingmoreandmore evidenttothem.

Presbyterianshavebeen outstandingintheiracceptanceoftheBiblealoneas theonlyauthorityonwhich truereligioncanbebased, andforthemostpartthey experienceaprofounddistasteforanytraditionsprior tothosedatingfromCalvin.

But,althoughtheystill subscribenominallytothe "Bible-Only"theory,many modernPresbyteriansare becominghesitant.

Theyarebeginningto realisethattheChurchexistedbeforealineofthe NewTestamentwaswritten, andthattheearliestChristiansobtainedtheirknowledgefromtheteachingsof theChurch, notfromthe readingoftheBible.

TheirscholarshaverecognisedalsothattheNew TestamentisnotasystematicaccountoftheChristianrevelation, thatitsbooks omittedmuchthatwasgenerallyknown, andthatthey themselveswouldliketo discovertheadditionalmatterfromthestudyofearly traditions.

Inthelightofthoselast wordsonemaywellask howthePresbyterian Churchcanpossiblyclaim tobeaChurchsuchas Christintended?ForHe, certainly, hadnointention ofre-establishingtheSynagogue!

InitsdoctrineoftheministryPresbyterianismholds auniqueplaceamongstthe ProtestantChurches.

MartinLuther,inrejectingtheauthorityofthe Churchfortheauthorityof theBible,repudiatedthe priesthoodasithadhitherto beenaccepted.Hemaintainedthepriesthoodofall believers,totheexclusion ofanysacerdotalcastereceivingspecialpowers abovethoseoftheordinary faithful.

HewascontentthatauthorityovertheChurch, previouslyexercisedbythe hierarchy, shouldbevested inthesecularprince;and heregardedthework oI ministersasmerelypastoral, afunctiontheirsby electionandcommissionon thepartofthemembersof theChurch.

NowJohnCalvinbegan byactingonthatprinciple. Hehimselfwasbutalayman;and,aswehaveseen, in1534hecelebratedthe Lord'sSupperintheEvangelicalChurchatPoitiers. But,in1536,whenhepub, lishedhis"Institutes,"h. hadconvincedhimselfthat therewasaspecialministerialofficeintheChurch, thatof"presbyters." Thatgotridofaspecial orderof"episcopacy".Bui. itadmittedaspecialorder of"presbyters." Atthesametime,Calvin allowedfortheappointmentoflaymenas"elders"; the"presbyters"topreach andadministertheSacraments;the"elders"toassistthe"presbyter"and helpinthegovernmentat theChurch.

Thereisagooddealof confusionamongstPresbyteriansthemselvesastothe distinctionbetween"elders" and"presbyters";somuch sothatPresbyterianscan bedivided, likeAnglicans, intoaLowChurchgroup, andaHighChurchgroup.

I,speakingoftheOrthodox andotherdissidentEastern Churches,declaredthat "Peopledonotrealisehow muchfaith,goodnessand Christianitythereisinthese bodiesnowseparatedfromthe age-longCatholictruth. Piecesbrokenfromgold-bearingrockthemselvesbear gold."
