ArtisticScheme

Weareable, infact,to seeinlargemeasurewhat theworld-pictureofthe Jewswasatthetimeofthe writingofthisdocument; andwedoknowsomething (notperhapsasmuchaswe shouldliketoknow)ofthe literaryformsinuseamong theJewsandthepeoples withwhomtheywerein contact.

Thatbeingso,itisbyno meansimpossibletofollow theartisticschemeofnarrationwhich,underinspiration,thehumanauthorof Genesisadopted,andtodistinguishbetweentheimagerywhichheemploysand thetruthswhichheisconcernedtoexpress.

God,FinalAuthor

Atthispointitwillbe welltosaysomethingonthe subjectofBiblicalinspiration, asunderstoodbyCatholics.WeCatholicsknow, ofcourse, thatthevarious booksoftheBiblewere writtenbyindividualmen whowerenotpossessedof anymorescientificinforma-

Wealsobelievethatthey wroteunderdivineinspiration, whichmeansthatGod Himselfmaybeconsidered theultimateauthorofwhat theywrote.Howthenreconcilethenaiveteand faultyscienceoftheScripturalwriterswiththewisdomandomniscienceof God?

Well,briefly,theanswer isthis:God,inmakinga revelationtomenthrough thehumanauthorswhom Hechose,willedtoconvey religioustruth,notscientific facts.AsPopeLeoXIII. putit,echoingSt.Augustine,God"didnotintend toteachwhatwouldhelp nomantoattaintohissalvation."

TheBible, accordingly,is notahandbookofscience, butacollectionofbooks containingreligioustruths destinedtohelpmensave theirsouls.

Thehumanauthorofthe BookofGenesiscouldhave knownthescientificfacts abouttheoriginof theearthonlyby reasonorrevelation.Hecould, not haveknownthem, inpointoffact,by reason, sincehe wasinnoposition toassimilatediscoveriesmadelong afterhistime, orto becomeacquainted withconclusions thathavetaken mankindthousands ofyearstoreach.
