Congregationalism

AsurveyoftheAnglican Communionwouldnotbe completewithoutabrief glanceatitspositioninthe UnitedStatesofAmerica.

Almosttwentyyearsbeforethe"Mayflower"pilerimslandedatPlymouth, U.S.A.,onDecember20, 1620,theChurchofEngland wasalreadyexistinginVirginia,itsclergysubjectto thejurisdictionoftheBishopofLondon.

In1630,however,many PuritanAnglicans,dissatisfiedwiththeHighChurch policyofCharlesIandof ArchbishopLaudofCanterbury,emigratedtothe AmericancoloniesandsettledinMassachusetts.

TheseAnglicansettlers, however, togetherwiththe clergywhocamewiththem, practicallyabandonedAnglicanisminfavourofCongregationalismshipping backtoEnglandthosewho protested.

ProblemofBishops

AtaConventionir.1789, whenaConstitutionforthe newChurchwasagreed upon, hefoughtagainstoppositionbyBishopSeabury fordoctrinalandliturgical changesinaProtestantdirection, asaresultofwhich elementswereintroduced intotheAmericanPrayer BookfromtheScottishRite, theword"minister"being substitutedinmanyplaces fortheword'priest,"and theformofabsolutionof sinsbeingleftoutofthe prescriptionsfortheVisita'ionoftheSick.

RiseofHighChurch

ItwasBishopHobart,of NewYork,however(18111830),whodidmorethan anyothertobuildupthe ProtestantEpiscopalChurch oftheUnitedStates.He wasstrictly"Episcopalian," refusingtoacknowledgethe validityofanybutEpiscopalOrders.

Afterhisdeath,theOxfordMovementinEngland, andthesubsequentriseof Anglo-Catholicism,gave risetoHighChurchtendenciesintheAmericanChurch whichledtostrenuousoppositionfromLowChurchmenandchargesof"Romanising"thereasinEngland.

And,asinEnglandalso, theconflictbetweenthetwo partiesresultedinaLiberal orBroadChurchParty whichpressedformoreand moredoctrinalandliturgicalfreedom.

TheAnglo-CatholicRevivalamongstAnglicans hasbeenoneofthechief causesoftheReunionMovementofwhichwehearso muchto-day.For,asopposedtoalowdoctrine denyinganyrealnecessity oftheChurchasavisible institution,Anglo-Catholics havebroughtintoprominenceamongstProtestants theNewTestamentteachingthatChristdoesindeed willonevisibleandundividedChurchsuchasHe Himselfestablishedinthe firstplace.

Moreandmorebooks, therefore, arecomingfrom Protestantpens, andnotonly fromthoseofAnglicans, deploringthescandalofthe multitudinousdivisionsamongstChristians.

ButAnglo-Catholicsare foremostintheirconstant insistenceonthenecessity ofReunion.Regarding themselvesasCatholics,they speakofthreelivingbranchesoftheCatholicChurch, Roman,Orthodox,andAnglican,whichareunfortunately,theysay,inastate ofschisminrelationtoone another.

TheyholdthatAnglicanism,despitethediversityin itsownranks,atleastretainssufficientofthemeans ofgracetosanctifyits members.ItsstateofseparationfromRomeandfrom theEasternOrthodoxChurcheshasbeenpermittedby God;butthatisonlyatemporarymakeshiftuntilthe schismishealed.

Butgrantedthegiftof FaithintheCatholicChurch astheonetrueChurchof Christ, noonewouldfailto perceivethisduty. Those whosincerelythinkofother alternativeshavenotyetattainedtothatdegreeof knowledgeoroffaithwhich everyconverttotheCatholicChurchhasdiscovered tobeoneofthemostpreciousgiftsofGod.Surely everynon-Catholicreader shouldpraythat, ifsuchindeedbethecase, hemight begrantedasimilargrace.
