InamemorableChristmasbroadcast,theHoly Fatherwarnedtheworldagainstthefalseconcyption ofanewmaterialismthatpeacecanbeattained throughtechnologicalprogress.ThePopeasserted thatunlesstechnicswerekeptintheirproperperspectivetheywouldachieve"amonstrousmasterpiece, makingmanintoagiantofthephysicalworldatthe expenseofhissoul,reducedtoapygmyintherealm ofthesupernaturalandeternal."Theperiloftechnicalprogresswasthatitwouldtransformsociety intoa"colourlessmass"andthreatenfamilylife.It wasaformofmaterialismthatofferedamathematical formulaastheultimateanswertothequestionofexistence.
Thatisanadmonitionthatmightbewrittenon thewallsofourfactories.Itwillreflectitselfincreasinglyinthetrendofeducationtowardsmere mechanicstothetotalneglectofthehumanities.But mostgravelyitwillcreateavoidinthesoulofman, concentratingallhisfacultiesonthingsmerelyex- ternal,andignoringtheirfirstcause.Inaword, religionwillgointothediscard,notassomethingdenied,butassomethingwithoutwhichlifecanstillproceedsmoothlyandprosperously.

Letusreviewthetypes ofinsanity;Nearlyonein fiveofallthosewhodiein insaneasylumsdiefrom' paresis,i.e.,astheresultof syphiliticinfection,whichis alwaysatleastindirectly consequentonsexualimmorality.

Religiousconvinctionhas adefiniteefficacyinmakingpeoplehumbleinstead ofconceited,andthisisan excellentfactorforprevent ing,thetendencytoinsanity.
Nearlyalwaysthepreliminarysignofinsanityisan exaggerationoftheego. Peoplewhooverratetheir importanceareoftenonthe roadtotheasylum.
Afterthetendencytoexaggerationoftheego,the mostcommonsymptonof incipientinsanityisdelusionofpersecution.
Thereligiousfeelingof trustinProvidenceandthe convictionthatGodwill somehowtakecareofthem keepsmanypeoplefrom allowingtheirdelusionsof persecutiontoappearas soonorasviolentlyas wouldotherwisebethecase.
Itisoftensaidthatreligionvictimizedtheinsane intheMedievaldaysbecauseitwasthoughtthat thesepeoplewerepossessed bythedevil,andthatthe thingtodowiththemwas tokeeptheminmanaclesin dungeons.

Onthecontrary,thelater MiddleAgesrecognized thattheinsanewerejust ailingpersonswhohadto betakencareof,properly treated,andkeptfrom hurtingthemselvesor others.
PaulofAegina,whowrote intheseventhcentury beforethemiddleages began,spokeofmelancholy asanaffectionofthebrain tobetreatedwithfrequentbathsandawholesomediet, togetherwithsuitableexhilarationofmind.Paulwas apopularauthorinthe middleages.
LikewiseBartholomewthe Englishman(13thcentury), whowroteanencyclopedia particularlyfortheclergymenofhistime,isacompleterefutationofthecanard thattheChurchencouraged theviewthattheinsane werepossessed.Inthat workBartholomewenumeratedexactlythesame causesofinsanityasthose thatmodernpsychiatrists areinsistingupon.

Inthanksgivingforsuch agreatsignofheavenly favour,wecelebratednext morningasolemnvotive MassinhonourofOur Lady,atwhichalltheaborigineswerepresent.
Thenewswassoonspread farandwideamongthenatives,andeachnewarrival attheMassionwasmost anxioustovisitthechapel andseethe"WhiteLady whoknewandcoulddoso much."Suchvisitsoffered usawelcomeopportunityof explainingtothemthe mysteresofourHolyFaith.

Whenvisitingtherein 1869,thepictureofOur Ladyhunginhisroomat theAbbey.Hetookthe opportunityofmeasuring thepictureandorderedin Englandaframeforitthat wouldbeornamentedwith cornsheavesandtonguesof flametocommemoratethe incidentnarratedabove.
Afewmonthslaterthe Governorfulfilledhispromiseandsentthebeautiful giftframeintowhichthe fleur-de-lishadbeenintroduced.
