Thesumof£8,395wasthefinalgrosstotalofcontributions totheofficialMissionAidsocietiesintheArchdioceseofPerth fortheyear1953,saidtheRev.J.Depiazzi,diocesandirectorof PontificalMissionAidSocieties.Thatsumsurpassedthereturns ofpreviousyears,andwascauseforgratitudetoGodandfora humblesatisfactiononthepartofthepriests,religiousandlaity whoworkedsowellinthatworkofloveandcharity,saidFatherDepiazzi.

Inaroughestimate,however,only50percent,ofthe remaining71,000adultscobtributetheordinarymembershipof2/2.Suchan analysis,too,isonlyapproximate,becausenoaccountistakenoftheextraordinarygenerosityofsome.

Yet,suchhasbeenthe progressinrecentyears, thesefiguresareinnoway disheartening.PleaseGod thedaywillcomesoonwhen theessentialneedofconcertedmissionaryactivity willberealisedbyallmembersoftheChurch.

Ordainedin1903,he cametoWestAustraliaimmediatelyandlaboured zealouslyforfiveyears, chieflyintheGoldfields,a: aperiodwhenthesacerdotalvocationheldmuch loneliness,hardshipsand sacrifice.TheRev.P. InanAustraliaDaybroadcast,theGovernorGeneral,SirWilliamSlim,saidhehadnofearforthe materialadvancementofAustralia,buthehopedwe wouldnotbecomesooccupiedwithmakingaliving thatweshouldforgethowtolive.Heinstancedthe dangerofuniversitiesbecomingtechnicalcolleges. SuchreflectionsareindeedaptonAustraliaDayfor, asweconsidertheexceedingyouthofourcountryas regardswhitehabitation,weacknowledgethatthe promiseoffutureprosperityliespreciselyinitsgeologicalantiquity.Wereitnothoarywiththefrosts oftime,theprospectsofoil,ofcoal,ofuraniumand othermineralwealthwouldnotexist.

So,itseems,thefutureholdsforusanexpanding planofwealthandeconomicsolidarity.Butthere isaconditionalclauseofgreatimportance-provided wehavethemanpowertodevelopourresourcesand toholdthecountryagainstinvasion.Ofalmost equalimport,however,willbeourabilitytowithstandthepressureofsuccess.Alreadyournationis deeplysteepedinmaterialism,andthereisreasonto fearthatincreasedwealthwillbutconfirmourpeople inthedelusionthatall'srightwiththeworld,forgettingthatGodisinHisheaven.

InamemorableChristmasbroadcast,theHoly Fatherwarnedtheworldagainstthefalseconcyption ofanewmaterialismthatpeacecanbeattained throughtechnologicalprogress.ThePopeasserted thatunlesstechnicswerekeptintheirproperperspectivetheywouldachieve"amonstrousmasterpiece, makingmanintoagiantofthephysicalworldatthe expenseofhissoul,reducedtoapygmyintherealm ofthesupernaturalandeternal."Theperiloftechnicalprogresswasthatitwouldtransformsociety intoa"colourlessmass"andthreatenfamilylife.It wasaformofmaterialismthatofferedamathematical formulaastheultimateanswertothequestionofexistence.

Thatisanadmonitionthatmightbewrittenon thewallsofourfactories.Itwillreflectitselfincreasinglyinthetrendofeducationtowardsmere mechanicstothetotalneglectofthehumanities.But mostgravelyitwillcreateavoidinthesoulofman, concentratingallhisfacultiesonthingsmerelyex- ternal,andignoringtheirfirstcause.Inaword, religionwillgointothediscard,notassomethingdenied,butassomethingwithoutwhichlifecanstillproceedsmoothlyandprosperously.

VeryoftenmenturntoGod,astoalastresort,us thegreatcrisesoflife-war,pestilence,poverty.But veryseldomdoesthemanofprosperityfeeltheneed ofanythingbeyondhimself,orifhedoesfeelit,itis usuallyfobbedoffwithfurtherself-indulgence.That iswhySt.Paulsaidtheloveofmoneywastheroot ofallevil.Andwhatistrueoftheindividualistrue alsoofcommunities,asthehistoryoftheJewishpeo- plevividlyillustrates.Hence,asoursecularsociety usesincreasingwealthtobuttressitscomplacency, Christianmenmustdeepenthewellsoffaith,of humility,gratitude,andofreparation.Forwithout visionthepeopleperish,anditisthevisionofGed, seennowobscurelyasthroughaglass,thatwillinvest theirtemporallifewithtruesecurityandsignificance, andassurethemtheface-to-facevisionofGodhereafter.

Thefirstwasbythe CensusCommissionerin Indiawhomadethe "alarming"predictionthat India'spopulationwould riseto520millionsby1981. Withtheimpertinence seeminglynativetobureaucrats,heattributedtheincreaseto"improvidentmaternity,"i.e.,motherswith threechildrenormore.

Since1921,heclaimed,the populationincreasehad progressivelyoutstripped thefoodoutput.Theanswertotheproblem,accordingtohim,isbirthcontrolto"stabilise"thepopulationat450millions.

SirRalphCilento,the notedauthorityontropical diseasesstated:"Theristogtideofpopulation againstthedwindlingflow offood.productionisthe moatseriousproblemfacing theworldtoday".

TheInformationDirector oftheUnitedNationsFood madAgriculturalOrganisation,Mr.G.Mulgrue,warnedthathalfthepopulation dtheworldwasstarving.

AccordingtoDr.F.T. Wahlen,theAgricultureDirectorofthesameorganisationstheworld'spopulation, atthepresentrateofinGrease,wouldreachfive thousandmillionsbythe andofthiscentury.

Overall,thepictureisa verydisturbingoneand mustgivepausetoevery manoutofthecommon emotionofpityorthemore splendidmotiveofChristencharity.

Dr.F.W.Clementsclaimedthatitwaspossibleto meettheproteinrequirementsofadultsalmostexclusivelyfromfoodsof vegetableorigin.Otherexpertsforetoldavastscientificincreaseinfishyields.

Allofwhichgivesthelie tothepessimistswhowant to"control"tlrthsrather thanincreasefoodsupplies. Butitstilldoesnotanswer theproblemoflivingspace whichremainsafertile plaguespotforwar-making,althoughampleroom andplentifulfoodsupplies willnotautomaticallybring peacewhichisofthespirit.

PopePiusXII.:Scientists backhisoptimismregarding anexpandingpopulation. anotableexampletowhich ourowncountrycontributes inmoneyandtechnicalassistance.

EachoftheexpertsI havequotedtacklesthe problemaccordingtohis philosophy.TheIndianisa paganandafatalist.He seespeoplediedailyinthe streets.Hethinksitkinder thattheyshouldnotbe born.Insofarashissolution representsthedecadenceof theWesternconscienceitis tobedeplored.Butnoone shouldbesurprisedthata paganplugsapagansolution.

SirRalphCilentotreats thematterasonemightexpectadoctortodo.Isit preferable,heaskstodieof malariaorstarvation?He regrettedthatthesuccessof scienceagainstmalariahad resultedinthepopulation jumpinginareaswherethe majorityofpeoplewere livingontheborder-lineof starvation.Hedidnotknow theanswertotheproblem, hesaid,''butwemustfind ananswer,becauseonthis hangsthefateofourcivilisation".

Theimmediatereaction totheworld'scryingmaterialneedsmustbetheoperationofsocialcharityon thepartofthenations

Butthecentralproblem remainsuntouched-the sheerneedoflivingroom, particularlyamongthenationsofAsia.Australiahas belatedlyawakenedtothe needofpopulationandour numbershavegrownto closeonninemillions throughmigrationofaselectivecharacter.Neither wenoranyotherWestern nationhasdoneanythingto alleviatethepressureofthe thousandsofmillionsof Asiatics.

YetasCatholicswemust recallthewordsoftheHoly Father,quotedbytheAustralianHierarchyin"Land WithoutPeople":-

"ThesovereigntyofindividualStates,however muchthisistoberespected, oughtnottobecarriedso farthatfreeaccesstothe earth'sbounty,whichis everywhereadequateto supportmultitudesofhumanbeings,shouldbedeniedtoneedybutworthy personswhohavebeen bornelsewhere. ."

Andagain:"Thereisthe questionofremedyingimmenseneeds;thelackof spaceandthelackofmeans

Meanwhileitistragicto hearSirJohnTeesdaleadvocatingacreagerestriction inalandsuchasours.Such smacksofanarrowand materialisticoutlook.The ageofruggedindividualism mustbediscarded.Inthe growingoffoodthereare biggerconsiderationsthan thewell-beingofAustralianfarmers.

TheHighChurch"SocietyforthePropagationof theGospel"sendsoutmissionariestoforeigncountriesteachingAnglo-Catholicism,whilsttheLow Church"ChurchMissionary Society"co-operateswith the"BritishandForeign BibleSociety"tosendadvocatesofProtestantismtothebewildermentofnativeswhodonotknow whattomakeofdiametricallyopposedreligions taughtinthenameofone andthesameChurchof England!

Isitanywonderthat "TheCommissiononChristianDoctrine",appointed bytheArchbishopsofCanterburyandYork,entitled theirReport,"Doctrinein theChurchofEngland"and not"DoctrineoftheChurch ofEngland",tothedelight ofModernistsandthedespairofAnglo-Catholics?

WhatIsBond?

Ithasbeensaidthat,despiteallthesedifferentand competingreligions,the AnglicanCommunionneverthelessretainsitsunity. Butwhatisitthatholdsall Anglicanstogether?Itmust besomethingdeeperthan "Establishment",forthat existsinEnglandonly,and theBishopsassembledat Lambethcamenotonly fromindependentAnglican ChurchesoftheBritish Dominions,butalsofrom theUnitedStatesandeven fromChinaandJapan.

TheAmericanEpiscopalian,Dr.LeicesterC.Lewis, writinginthe"HolyCross Magazine",triedtoanswer thequestion.Accordingto him,thebondunitingAnglicansiscertainlynotthe "PrayerBook",sincethere isnounifiedfidelitytoit; northeCreeds,whichmany professingAnglicansdonot believeandwhichmaybe deniedwithimpunity;nor "liturgicalworship",since thereistheutmostdiversity ofpractice.

Medicalexpertsspeakdif- ferently.Clouston,uiewellknownEnglishauthorityon mentaldiseases,whose opinionisfoundedonmany yearsofpersonalobservation, betweenstatestherelationship religionandmentalhealthinhisbook,UnsoundnessofMind: "Itis touchingtruethatreligion, inthemostintense waytheemotionalnature andthespiritualinstinctsof mankind,sometimesappears tocauseandisoftenmixed upwithinsanity. Butinnearlyallsuch casestheindividualwasoriginallyunstable,specially emotional,oversensitive,hy- perconscientious,andoften somewhatweakintheintellectualandinhibitory faculties,and,iflookedfor,othercauseswillusuallybe found."

Insanity,infact,goesup indirectratioasreligion goesdown.Thegreatincreaseininsanityhastaken placeduringthepast100 years,theveryperiodthat hasknownthegreatestloss inreligiousfaith.

PersecutionIn ChinaHasMade FaithStronger

NewsfromCanton,South China,statesthatthecongregationsattheChristmas Masseswerelargerthan everbefore.Thereports statethatsomeCatholics whohadremainedaway fromthechurchforasmany as30yearsarenowpracticingtheirFaithwithimpressivedevotion.

AletterfromShanghaireportedthattheChurchof ChristtheKing.inShanghai,wasfilledtooverflowingfortheChristmasMasses.Reportsfromother churchesinShanghaistatethatthecrowdsatChristmasweregreaterthanever before.

Theimpressivecrowdsat theChurchofChristthe King,inShanghai,may havebeenparticularlyirkingtotheReds,itispointedbuthere.Alaterreportsaysthatontheday afterChristmas,thechurch',s pastor,FatherAloysius Tsang,wasseizedbyRed policeandhasnotbeen heardofsince.Another priest,FatherGeorgeWang, S.J.,wasgrabbedbypolice twodayslater.

Letusreviewthetypes ofinsanity;Nearlyonein fiveofallthosewhodiein insaneasylumsdiefrom' paresis,i.e.,astheresultof syphiliticinfection,whichis alwaysatleastindirectly consequentonsexualimmorality.

Thenextmostserious formofacquiredinsanityis owingtoalcoholicexcess. Itoccursmuchlessfrequentlyinthosewhohave anyreligiousprinciplesthan inthosewhoarewithout them,becausereligionprotectsfromtheexcessesthat predisposetotheseconditions.

HumilityAndTrust

Religiousconvinctionhas adefiniteefficacyinmakingpeoplehumbleinstead ofconceited,andthisisan excellentfactorforprevent ing,thetendencytoinsanity.

Nearlyalwaysthepreliminarysignofinsanityisan exaggerationoftheego. Peoplewhooverratetheir importanceareoftenonthe roadtotheasylum.

Afterthetendencytoexaggerationoftheego,the mostcommonsymptonof incipientinsanityisdelusionofpersecution.

Thereligiousfeelingof trustinProvidenceandthe convictionthatGodwill somehowtakecareofthem keepsmanypeoplefrom allowingtheirdelusionsof persecutiontoappearas soonorasviolentlyas wouldotherwisebethecase.

Itisoftensaidthatreligionvictimizedtheinsane intheMedievaldaysbecauseitwasthoughtthat thesepeoplewerepossessed bythedevil,andthatthe thingtodowiththemwas tokeeptheminmanaclesin dungeons.

ThirteenthCentury

Onthecontrary,thelater MiddleAgesrecognized thattheinsanewerejust ailingpersonswhohadto betakencareof,properly treated,andkeptfrom hurtingthemselvesor others.

PaulofAegina,whowrote intheseventhcentury beforethemiddleages began,spokeofmelancholy asanaffectionofthebrain tobetreatedwithfrequentbathsandawholesomediet, togetherwithsuitableexhilarationofmind.Paulwas apopularauthorinthe middleages.

LikewiseBartholomewthe Englishman(13thcentury), whowroteanencyclopedia particularlyfortheclergymenofhistime,isacompleterefutationofthecanard thattheChurchencouraged theviewthattheinsane werepossessed.Inthat workBartholomewenumeratedexactlythesame causesofinsanityasthose thatmodernpsychiatrists areinsistingupon.

Themiraculousimageis preservedtothisdayat Genazzano,whichhasbecomethemostimportant shrineofOurLadyofGood Counsel.

ThecopyatNewNorcia, however,hasitsownclaim tothemiraculous,asthefollowingnarrativefromBishopSalvado's"Memoirs," published,in1850,will show:

NobodyeverheardofaCatholic'sturningfromhisfaithon hisdeathbed.Assurancethatthesacramentsaretrulyeffective forthedyingmakesaCatholicdeathbedatriumph.ExtremeUnction,oftencalledAnointingoftheSick,isoneofthegreatreasons forthisstateofaffairs.

ExtremeUnctionisdefinedas:Asacramentofthe NewLaw,whereby,through theunctionofblessedoil andprayerofthePriest healthofsoulisconferred onaChristianwhoisdangerouslyill,andevenhealth ofbody,ifthisisexpedient forthehealthofthesoul.

Withtheexceptionofthe Ritualists,allProtestants today,aftertheWaldenses, Wycliffeites,andHussites andLutherandCalvin, denythatthisunctionisa sacramentandcontendthat thewordsofSt.James mustbeunderstoodofthe giftofhealingbodilydiseases,whichwasconferred onmanyinthefirstcentury.

Thesavageswhosawthis greatwonderremained

spellbound.Gazingwith aweandvenerationupon thepicture,someofthem verynaively,butwithall truthsaid:"Thiswhitelady understandseverything.She hasdoneit.Yes;itwas she.Wecannotdosuch wonderfulthings."

Inthanksgivingforsuch agreatsignofheavenly favour,wecelebratednext morningasolemnvotive MassinhonourofOur Lady,atwhichalltheaborigineswerepresent.

Thenewswassoonspread farandwideamongthenatives,andeachnewarrival attheMassionwasmost anxioustovisitthechapel andseethe"WhiteLady whoknewandcoulddoso much."Suchvisitsoffered usawelcomeopportunityof explainingtothemthe mysteresofourHolyFaith.

BishopSalvadoconcludes thisnarrativebytellingus, thattheinfuriatedhusband andincendiary,called.Manunga,camelatertotheMission,showingsignsoftrue repentanceandaskingtobe allowedtoembracethe Faith.Hemadesatisfactionforhisevilactionby thegreatserviceshegaveto themisionaries.

Theartisticallyguilded frameinwhichthepainting issetwasthegiftofGovernorWeld,aCatholic.

Hehadagreatveneration forBishopSalvadoandthe monksatNewNorcia.

Whenvisitingtherein 1869,thepictureofOur Ladyhunginhisroomat theAbbey.Hetookthe opportunityofmeasuring thepictureandorderedin Englandaframeforitthat wouldbeornamentedwith cornsheavesandtonguesof flametocommemoratethe incidentnarratedabove.

Afewmonthslaterthe Governorfulfilledhispromiseandsentthebeautiful giftframeintowhichthe fleur-de-lishadbeenintroduced.

Scripturesays:"Isthere anyamongyousick?Let himbringinthepresbyters oftheChurch,andletthem prayoverhim,anointing himwithoilinthenameof theLord.Andtheprayerof faithwillsavethesickman, andtheLordwillraisehim up,and,ifhebeinsins, theyshallbeforgivenhim" (Jamesv,14-16).

Wenotethattheword"is sick"(asthenei)isusedin referringtothosewhoare afflictedwithgraveillness, ameaningthatisconfirmed bytheGreekwordkamnonta("thesickman"), whichconnotesonewhois dangerouslyill.

PriestsCanConfer

Thewordpresbytersdesignatesdulyordained priests,asisclearfromthe paralleltexts(Actsxiv,22; xv,2;ITim.iv,14;v.17, 19).

"Theprayeroffaith" doesnotrefertotheprayer ofthesickman,assome Protestantscontend,butto theprayerofthepresbyters. Oliveoilisusedinthe sacrament.Itiscalledthe oiloftheinfirm.
