"Thesubjectisthatcontentionsone-thetitleof "rDefenderoftheFaith,'and itsinterpretation.Weknow thatitwasoriginallyconferredbythePopeon Henry,whileHenrywasa Catholic,butlater,inthe generalchaosthatfollowed, Parliamentdugthistitleup again,'reconditioned'it,and attachedittoaProtestant sovereign-orsoweunderstand."
A.:Yes,thatismoreor lesswhathappened.To makeyouraccountstrictly accurate,youwouldneedto addthatHenryhadthetitle madehereditaryin1543, thatParliamentrepealedit in1554,andthatitwasreintroducedandgivenpermanentlegalstandingunder ElizabethI.
Bythenitwasquiteclear thatthewords'Defenderof theFaith,"couldnolonger meanwhattheymeantwhen theywerefirstappliedby PopeLeoX,asatitle,to HenryVIII.Whattheydid mean,henceforth,isnotso easytodefine.Isuggested,acoupleofmonthsgo, whenIdiscussedthis subjectindetail,that the"faith"ofwhichthere wasquestioncouldhardly beanythingelsethanthe faithoftheChurchofEng- iand.
Itwasforthatreasonthat itseemedtome,asitdoes tomanyothers,thatthe titleisasomewhatinappropriateone,especially hereinAustralia,where thereisnolegallyestablishedreligion.Thedroppingofthetitlefromour %coinage,then,regrettableas itseemedtomanysincere Anglicans,appearedtomany othersperfectlyjustifiable: ananomalyhadceasedto exist,thatwasall.
Butnowyouaddaconsiderationthattellsinfavouroftheretentionofthe -title.Letmesaystraightwaythatyourargumentis notwithoutforce.Itis onethatmanyAnglicans, whoarenotreallyconcernedtoclaimanyprivileged positionfortheirChurch, wouldinfactendorse. It isalsoonethatIhadseriouslyconsideredmyselfbeforetakingupaposition againstthecontinueduseof thetitle.
Youwrite: "Atthatdate(thatisto say,intheearlyseventeenth century),theinterpretation ofthistitlecouldrelateto onlyoneofthetwosections ofEnglishChristendomBomanCatholicorAnglicanProtestant.Butisnot theinterpre,ationofthis*titleto-daytoonarrowand medieval?TherearemillionsofCatholicsandProtestantnon-Conformistsubjectsofthesovereign,and thistitleshouldperhaps haveawiderandmorecomprehensivemeaning-meaning'DefenderoftheFaith' ascoveringallformaof Christianfaith."
A.:Ifthetitle"Defender oftheFaith"wereone whichmerelyexpressedthe sovereign'sallegianceto Christianideals,thenI thinkitwouldbequitea goodideatokeepitup.But .therearereallytwodifficultieshere.Firstandforemost,itisimpossible-par-ticularlyforusCatholicstoforgetthesourceandthe originalmeaningofthe title.
Touseatitleawardedby ,thePopeforservicestothe CatholicFaithandtheHoly Seeinsuchawayastoendorsea externalreligioussettlement toCatholicismand disowningallegianceto Rome,seemsaverypara- doxicalprocedureindeed:it reallyamountstohaving
thingsbothways-andmany ofusdislikethis.Evenif youbroadenthemeaningof thetitle,itisdifficulttoescapetheassociationsofthe past:fourhundredyearsof historyarenotsoeasily cancelledoutasthat.
Inthesecondplace, itis difficulttobroadenthisparticulartitlesufficientlyto meetthepresentsituation, withoutpracticallyemptyingitofcontent.Evenputtingasidethedifficulty whichyoumentionina laterpartofyouletter, viz., thattherearemanymillions ofMuslinandothernonChristiansubjectsofthe Queen, itisaverytouchy businesstryingtoarriveat somedefinitionofthe Christianfaithwhichwill satisfyallthosewhocall themselvesChristian.
Youcandoitifyouwater downtheideaofChriStianityuntilitmeanssomereferencetoChrist:butthen inwhatsensecouldthesovereignhecalleda"defender"ofsuchavagueamorphousbelief?.
Iadmitthatforagreat numberofpeopleChristianityisnowadaysaveryindefiniteterm.Sometime ago,aFranciscanpriest, whoiswellknownatCambridge,toldmethat,after givingmarriageinstructions toagirlwhowasgoingto marryaCatholic,butwho washerselfanunbaptised person,hedecidedtoask herwhethersheconsidered herselfaChristian.
Shewasveryoffendedby thequestion."I'venever
doneanythingdishonourable inmylife,Father,"shesaid. Well,thatiswhatChristianityhascometomeanto manypeopleinAustralia, too.Arewethengoingto broadentheQueen'stitleto meansomethinglike:"UpholderofHonourableConduct"?Ifso,whatofthe feelingsofthosewhobelieveindogmaticChristianity?Theywouldn't careverymuchforatitle withthismilk-and-water meaning.
Onceyoutrytocrystallise inamoredefinitewaythe notionofsuchChristianity astheQueencanbeconsideredtodefendonbehalfof herpeoples, youaregoing torunintotheproblemsof contradictorybeliefsshelteringundertheonename ofChristianity.
Ifthereisquestionofthe "defence"ofathing, you musthavefairlyclearideas onwhatitisthatistobe defended.Itseemstome thattherewouldbesome troubleinarrivingatclear ideasonthissubject'that wouldbesatisfactorytoall.
Thesearesomeofthe reasons, then, thatIwould opposetoyourargument. Atthesametime,Iwould haveyouunderstandthatI ambynomeansagainstthe useofsometitleimplying theprofessionofChristianitybytheEnglishsovereigns.Butthisparticulartitle,"Defenderofthe Faith,"doesnotseemtobe particularlywelladaptedto thatpurpose.

A.:Yes,itdoesaccept thesechildren.Itwould beunthinkabletodeprive childrenofthemeansof salvationsimplybecause theirparentsweren'tall theymighthavebeen. Thereisjustonefurther commenttobemade.The Churchfindsitinexpedient, inpractice,tobaptisechildrenwhoarenotindanger ofdeath,andforwhose educationintheCatholic faithnoprovisionismadeor likelytobemade.That wouldbetoconferthemost preciousofgifts,andthen seeitfrustratedofitsprincipaleffects.
