A.:Yes,Ishould.Firstof all,therewasnoneedto waitfortheexcavationsof 1939-49todismissthat "canard"ofold-fashioned propagandists,thatSt.Peter wasneverinRome.No scholarwhowasworthhis salteverdalliedforlong withthatidea,fortheevidence,literaryandarchaeological,tothecontrarywas overwhelming.

Theideawasinfact broachedbysomeold-fash ionedpropagandists,who believed,mistakenly,that iftheycouldcallinquestionSt.Peter'sresidencein Rome,theprimacyofthe RomanSeewouldbeundermined,andtheposition ofthePope,asheadofthe Church,madeuntenable.

Inthesecondplace,I havetotellyouthatthere isnocertainevidencethat St.Peter'sboneshavebeen found.Whathasbeenfound isamemorialshrine,deep downbeneathSt.Peter's, andcoveringasmallempty spaceinanancientcemetery.Theshrinehasbeen identifiedwithpractical certaintyasthe"trophy"of St.Peter,erectedonthe VaticanHill,towhicha RomanpriestGaiusrefers abouttheyear200.

Thisshaftwasacommon featureofChristianaltars. Itleddownfromthealtar totheplacewherethebody ofamartyrwasburied, thusgivingworshipersa senseofcloseconnection withthedeadmartyr, and alsoallowingthemtolower objectstotouchthebody itself.

Itseems, then, thatthe shaftrunningdownfrom lateraltarsheretothe earlyshrineamongthefirst centuryChristiantombs, pointsdirectlytothespot wherethebodyofSt.Peter oncelay.Theonlybones, however, thathavebeenrecoveredfromthisshaftcannotbesaidwithanycertaintytobethoseofSt. Peter.

Tothearchaeologist, these factstellstheirownstory. Thisisthespotreverenced bytheearlyChristiansin connectionwiththebodyof St.Peter, theheadoftheir Church.
