Theinsinuationisoften madethatcommunismhas flourishedinCatholiccountries, whereasithastaken nofootholdinProtestant regions.Amongothers, BishopBromleyOxnamhas madeinnuendostothisef1'feetinmanylectures throughoutAmerica.

TheBishopstatesthat Protestantemphasisupon freedomcreatesaclimate inwhichcommunismcould! nottakerootandcannot survive.Bycontrast,he findsthattheallegedclericalismoftheCatholic 'Churchishostiletothe idealsoffreedom.Insuch anatmosphere, heasserts, communismcanmoreeasily thrive.

Thisargumentismade moreplausiblebycitingthe largecommunistpartiesin FranceandItalyandthe growingmenaceofcommunisminLatinAmerica.

Onesetoffactsworth notingisthatmanyCatholiccountrieshavenoproblemofcommunismwhatsoever.IfthereisaCommunistpartyinIreland,it 'hasbeenstrangelysilent. ThereisnopresentproblemofcommunisminSpain.

TheincidenceofcommunisminLatinAmericais quiteuneven.Evenabeginnerinlogic,knowing thesefacts,wouldfindsome

Ontheotherhand,communismhasspreadto seriousproportionsinmany areasofAsia.Theconquest ofChinawasprecededby thebuild-upofalargecommunistfollowing.Thesame conditionshavebeenrepeatedinIndo-China.

Indiahasagrowingcommunistproblem.Inallthese cases,politicalandeconomicconditionscontributed greatlytotheriseofcommuzism.'Certainlythe CatholicChurchwasnota factorinAsia.

Inthelastonehundredyears,Our BlessedMotherhasappearedtomenthree times,andeachtimeshehasbroughtHeavenlygifts-aHeavenlymessageandaHeavenlyweaponagainstevil.

Thegiftsarethethousandsofmiracleswhich haveattendedhercoming. Themessageissimpleandrealistic-Penance,Penance,Penance. Theweaponisabeautifulprayer;Mary's Rosary.

In1846,ontheMountain ofLaSalette, twolittle shepherdchildrensaw Mary.Seatedonarock, her elbowsrestingonherknees, herfaceburiedinher hands, shewasweepingbitterly.Tothefrightened childrenshegavethereason forhertears:Thesinsof menandtheirneglectof prayer. Inourowncentury, whilemen werebusykilling eachotheronthe battlefieldsofthe FirstWorldWar, Marycameagain, thistimetothree Portuguesechildren ofthevillageof Fatima.Sixvisits shemade, sixtimes shebroughther warnings:Wemust repentofoursins... wemustsaythe Rosary.Whowas shethechildren asked.''OurLady oftheRosary."

Inthesethree greatappearances ofMary,threefacts standoutasparticularlystriking. WhenMarycame, shecamealwaysto children.Whenshewas askedhowmencouldavert God'sanger,heroneanswer waspenance.Andwhenshe toldustopray,shesaidto praytheRosary. ThatchildrensawMary whengrown-upscouldnot, shouldcertainlynotsurpriseus.Truly,sheisthe motherofusall,butthe pureheartsoflittleones aremostworthyoflooking onher.Thatpenanceshould behermessageisnotastounding.

Whatdoesmakeuspause, however,isMary'schoice oftheRosary,outofallthe prayersoftheagesandall thewealthoftheliturgy,as theprayerforourtimes andourproblems.
