FourBishopsandsixteenpriestswerein Carnarvonduringthepastweektoparticipateinthesacerdotalsilverjubileeofthe Rev.J.G.McKay.Duringthecelebrations theparishpriestwasappointedArchdeacon ofCarnarvon.

Thejubileecelebrations commencedinSt.Mary's ChurchonSundaywhen HisLordship,BishopB. StewartcelebratedtheparochialMassatwhichthere wasageneralHolyCommunionfortheintentionsof theJubilarian.

Therewasafullchoir underthedirectionofMrs. B.Westonandthecongregationwasaverylargeone.

Dr.Stewartpreachedthe occasionalsermonduring whichhepaidglowingtributetotheworkcarriedout constantlyformorethan23 _yearsbytheparishpriest ofCarnarvon,theVenerableArchdeaconMcKay.

SpiritualFirst

Intheafternoon,His Lordship,who,incidently, wasafellowstudentwith thejubilarianinRome25 yearsago,blessedanddedicatedfourcommemorative stainedglasswindows whichdepictinbriefthe storyofthepriesthood.

BishopStewarttracedthe historyoftheCatholic priesthoodandexpressed admirationofthebeautiful windows.Therewasalarge ',crowdagaininattendance andSt.Mary'schoironce moresanglovelyappropriatehymns.

Bishop'sTribute

Therewasarepresentative gatheringofcitizensata civicfunctionarrangedby theCarnarvonMunicipal Counciltowelcomethefour visitingbishopsandclergy onMondayevening.

Thepartywasalsoa complimentaryonetoconaaatulateArchdeaconMcKayontheattainMentof hissilverjubileeofpriesthood.Thecouncilweresupportedbythechairmanand secretaryoftheGascoyneMinilyaRoadBoard,Mr.K. IllingworthandMr.I.G.L. Watkinsrespectively.

TheActingMayor(CouncillorMarsh)welcomedthe prelatesandclergyandsaid itwasanhistoricoccasion forneverbefore,hethought, weretherefourbishopsin Carnarvontogetherandso manyclergyattheonetime.

Itwasahightributeto ArchdeaconMcKay,hesaid, +thatsuchadistinguished gatheringhadcomefrom manypartsofAustraliato dohimhonour.

Theirparishpriestwas heldinhighregardand whilehehadalwaysplaced hisspiritualdutiesashis Arstconcernhehadtaken partinmanymovements overtheyearsinthewelfareandadvancementof thetownanddistrict.

TheArchdeaconwasa goodcitizenandakind friendnotonlytohisown peoplebuttothemanywho "cametohimforhelpand advice.

OnNov.9theschool childrenentertainedthe jubilarianwithashortconcertandafterwardsthe seniorboypresentedseveral handsomegiftstoArchdeaconMcKayonbehalfofthe PresentationSistersandthe children.

AccompanyingtheArchdeaconwereHisLordship theBishopofBendigo,Most Rev.Dr.B.D.Stewartand theRev.Dr.E.Collinsor ShentonPark.BishopStewartaddressedthechildren andSistersandspokeof thejubileeanditssignificance,andpraisedthework oftheirparishpriest,carriedoutfaithfullyandefficientlyoveralongperiod ofyears.

ArchdeaconMcKaythankedthePresentationnuns andtheirpupilsforthevery finepresentstheyhadmade tohim.Hepaidtributeto theSistersfortheirever faithfulservicetothe Churchinthebranchof CatholiceducationatCarnarvonandhemadespecialreferencetooneofthe Sisterswho,hesaid,had taughthimverymanyyears ago.Hewasdelightedto seeherpresentatthefunc-tion.

ArchdeaconMcKaygrant- edaholidaytocelebratethe occasionandattheconclusionofthespeechesice creamwasservedtothe largegathering.

OnNov.10,thesilver jubileeofArchdeaconMcKaywassolemnisedinSt. Mary's,StaroftheSea,by thecelebrationofHighMass followedbytheTeDeum.

TheMasswascelebrated inthepresenceofHisLordshiptheBishopofGeraldton,theMostRev.A.Gummer.Alsopresentwere TheirLordshipstheMost Rev.B.Stewart,Bishopof Sandhurst;theMostRev.L. Goody,andtheMostRev.B. Gallagher,BishopofPort Pirie.

ThecelebrantoftheMass wasthejubilarian,ArchdeaconMcKay.Assistants atthethronetoBishop GummerweretheVeryRev. F.Girke,S.C.A.,andthe Rev.A.T.Langmead.

ThedeaconoftheMass wastheRev.E.Sullivan; thesub-deacon,theRev.E. Byran,andthemasterof ceremoniestheRev.H. Middleton.

Attendantclergyincluded theVeryRev.DeanLynch, theVeryRev.0.O'Connor, Adm.,theRevs.W.O'Collins,S.J.,E.Collins,G.E. Sharry,andF.O'Sullivan.

Thecongregation,which filledthechurch,included thenunsofthePresentation convent,parishionersof St.Mary's,andnumerous otherfriendsofFatherMcKay.

Theoccasionalsermon waspreachedbyHisLordship,BishopGoody,who saidthattwenty-fiveyears agohehadbeenpresentat FatherMcKay'sordination tothepriesthoodandhis firstMassinRome;thatthe jubileeMassofto-daythus linkedCarnarvonwith Rome.

BishopGoody,continuing, saidthatthroughtheofferingofMasstheperpetuationofCalvary,withthe wholeoftheRedemption wasmadeavailabletothe parishionersofCarnarvon.

Objectively,theMasswas

thechiefreasonofthe priest'sexistence;though, infact,thepriestwaspresentatallstagesinthelives ofhispeople,fromthe cradletathegrave.Allof thesethingsexistedthat menmightbeabletoreceivetheBreadofLife.

Inothersacredritesthe presenceofthepriest, thoughordinarilyrequired, wasnotabsolutelynecessary,butitwasessentialfor theMassandtheEucharist.

HisLordshipconcluded bysayingthatallthosepre-sent,Bishops,priests,religious, withandfaithful,joined thejubilarianinthankingGodforallthegracesandblessingsreceivedduringthepasttwenty-five years;thatofFatherMcKay itcouldbesaid:"Welldone, thougoodandfaithfulservant"

TheHolyFatherhascalledonceagaintothefaithful tourgethemtoevengreater effortsforthegloryofGod andtheextensionofChrist's Kingdomonearth,byobservingaMarianYear.

Thiscanbedonequite simplybypracticalCatholicsbyjoiningtheLegionof Maryandprayingandworkingunderecclesiastical guidance.Theobjectof thisprayerandworkisthe sanctifyingofone'sownsoul byactiveco-operationin Mary'sandtheChurch's workofcrushingthehead oftheserpentandadvancingthereignofChrist.

WhatMembersDo

Activemembersattenda weeklymeetinganddo abouttwohourswork weekly(minimum).Itis surprisinghowcheerfully devotiontoOurBlessed Ladyinspiresthemtolook onthisasajoynottobe missed,andnotasasacrifice.

Theweeklymeetingis generallyheldintheevening,butwhereitisnotpossibletohaveanevening meeting,Comitiummay sanctionday-timemeetings. Mostpraesidiareportvacanciesforlegionariesover 18yearsofage.

Auxiliarymembership consistsofthosewhoare unableorunwillingtoassumethedutiesofactive membership,butwhoundertaketogivethelegion thepricelessbackingof theirprayers.

Thesedailyprayersare containedinaleafletobtainablefromanypraesidium;theyincludetheRosary.Theleafletiscalled theTessera.

Fromtimetotimeactive legionarieshavebeenforcedbysomereasonoranother,ill-health,stressof business,familycares,and soon,torelinquishmembership.Ineachandevery casethelosstothepraesidiumhasbeengreat,and deeplyregrettedbyallconcerned.Perhapssomeof thisgallantbandarenow

freetoresumeactivemembership.

Thisisaspecialappealto anywhocanseetheirway toreturntotherankstodo soasalovinggesturefor theMarianYear.Their compactwithMary,their Queen,stillstands;the gloriousbutheavyburden offaithfulmembershipis themeanswhichMary, MotherofJesus,utilisesto achievetheresultswhich shedesiresfromherlegion.

EvilsofApathy

Abriefexaminationofhis aimswillmakethePope's warningagainstindifference toCommunismmoremeaningful.Tobeginfromthe philosophicandreligious aspect,itistobenotedthat itisessentiallymaterialistic.Abolitionofreligion isheldasfundamentalto thesystem,whichofcourse hasfearfulrepercussionsin thewholemorallifeofthe people.

Allthoseattendantdisciplinesandrestraintsof religiondisappearalong'withit.Familylifeisbroken up;inplaceofparental trainingissubstitutedState controlofallchildrenold enoughtoleavetheirparents,inordertoreceive theblessingsofagodless education.

Aboveallhowever,inthe wholefieldofhumanactivityitmustbenotedthat theeconomicfactorissup- reme;aboutit,allactivitymustrevolve.State ownershipofallthemeans ofproductionisdemanded bycommunists,andalsothat ofcontrolanddistribution ofgoods.Inordertoeffect thismoresecurelyaclasslesssocietyisadvocated, broughtaboutbyclasswarfareinthepresentestab-lishedorder.

RapeofLiberty

Thisaccomplished,the proletariatistobeorganisedintoforcedlabourunits; theindividualthusbecomingamorecoginthevast Statemachine.Asaresult ofthismanisstrippedof allhisliberty;humanpersonalityisrobbedofits dignity,and"allthemoral restraintsthatcheckthe eruptionsofblindimpulse areremoved."Ofthetruth

CapitalismAbused

Butthechurchagrees withCommunismincondemningtheabusesof moderncapitalism,which theyclaimtoberesponsible forthetrulypitifulplight oftheworkingmantoday inmanypartsoftheworld. Capitalism,initself,as aneconomicsystemislawful,basedasitisonthe fundamentalrighttopossessprivateproperty.ModernCapitalismhoweveris theabuseofcapitalism,and isthereforeseverelycondemnedbytheChurch.

Itisbasedonthefalse conceptofownership:it ignorestheChristianteachingthatownershipisastewardshiptobeexercisedaccordingtothelawsofjus- ticeandcharity,andwith dueregardstotheneedsand rightsofothers.Ithasa socialaswellasanindivi dualaspect.

PerversionofAims

talismMoreover,ModernCapiisaperversionof thetrueaimofindustry. Thenaturallawordainsthat industrybeconductedin theinterestsofthecommunity.ButModernCap- italismconductsitsolelyin theinterestsofcapitalists;it itisessentiallyconnected withusury;itreliesonthe unjustandimpersonalsystemofcombinesandtrusts withitsgreatlyweakened accountability;andlastly foritsclaimthatgovernmentshavenorighttointerfereintheeconomic sphere.Inaword,itis "aneconomicsystemthatis hard,cruelandrelentlessin aghastlydegree."

IndefendinghisTheses againsttheCatholicauthorities,headoptedanattitude ofprideandarrogance,abandoningreasonforinvective.Hepouredcontemptuousscornonhis critics,andsoonmanifested ablindhatredofRomeand ofthePope.

Nordidhebehavedifferentlyafterwardstowards otherProtestantteachers whodisagreedwithhim. Hissermonswereobstinate anddogmatic.Hebrooked nocontradiction.Hetoleratednorival.Hearrogatedtohimselfthevery infallibilityhedeniedtothe Pope.

Thesefactsseemstrange tothosewhoknowonlythe Lutheroflegend,andhave neverstudiedthesubject forthemselves.ButProtestantscholarsarequite readytoagreewiththeexplanationsIhavegiven.

WhyMediocrity?

Somehomesproducegreat menandwomen.Other homesproducemediocremen andwomen.Why?Because somefathersandmothers whoareheadsofgreathomes donotspareanyefforttoput greatqualitiesintotheirsons anddaughtersbythetraining,bytheexample,bythe holinessthattheyshow theirchildrenandbythe atmosphereinwhichthey raisetheirchildren.

StrengthofChildren

Otherfathersandmothers claimtobetheheadsof homes,buttheydonotput suchaneffortintoit.They taketheeasywayout.They donotwishtopaytheprice thatittakestomakegreat menandgreatwomenoutof theirsonsanddaughters.As aresult,wehavesomechildrenwhoaremediocreand otherswhoarespiritually strong.

WhyshouldyoubebotheredwiththeFamilyRosary, youask?Well,anyman withfaith,andanyhusband. anyfatherofsonsandof daughtersandtheheadofa familyshouldnothaveto askthatquestion.Anywife andmotherofsonsand

menandwomenwhobecome greathusbandsandwives. fathersandmothers.Thisis notjustanopinion.The storyoftheagesisproof thatRosaryhomesmake greatmenandwomen.

Hereisanotherreason:To helpgettheworldoutofthe troubleandunhappinessitis nowin.Itisnotjustthe responsibilityofourdiplomatsandourgovernment officials,ofourarmies,and ournavies;itistheresponsibilityofeverysingleone ofus.Infact,youwhohave thetruefaithhavethegreatestpowerofall;youhave, moreover,thegreatresponsibilityofhelpingthisworld torisefromthetroubleitis nowin.

oneisOurLady.Sheis closesttotheOneWhohas thefirstwordandthelast wordtosayaboutlifeor death,orhealth,orpeace,or war,oranythingelsethat willeverhappentomenin thisworld.GodistheOne Whohasthefirstwordand thelastwordtosayabout everythingandanythingand sinceOurLadyiscloserto Elmthanallothers,theone wordfromherhasgreatpowerandinfluenceoverwhat Godwillsaytoourrequests.

TooMuchtoAsk?

Oneofthesurestwaysof gettingMarytouseherinfluencewithOurFatherin ourbehalfandinbehalfof thepeopleofthisworld,is theRosary.Shehassaid thatherself.IftheRosary initselfisthatpowerful,then howmuchmorepowerfulis itwhenitissaidinharmony withfather,mother,sons anddaughters?

4.-TheCarryingoftheCross.Jesusfallsthree timesunderHisheavyburden,buteachtimerises inHisheroicstruggletoreachthetopofthehill. Andwhy?Todieacriminal'sdeathonthecross Hecarries,soignominiously sacrificingHislifeforme. ButwhenHeseessome womenweeping,Helooks atthemwithcompassion andsays,"Weepnotfor Me;butweepforyourselves,andforyourchildren."Andontheway,He meetsHismother,andshe looksintoHisbloodyeyes mutely,knowingitwasfor thisthatHewasborn-herGodandherSon.In hertorturedheart,shecannotevenwishforHis deliverance;andthisisthecrossthatMarybears, unseenbyanysaveHim,ontheroadtoCalvary.

3.-TheDescentoftheHolyGhostupon Apostles.ButwithJesusnolongervisibleamongY hem,theapostlesareagaininterroroftheirlives. Againtheylockthemselvesin aroomandpray,andJesus answersthemaccordingtoHis promise,andsendstheHoly Ghostintotheirhearts.And beholdtheamazingchange: thesehumbleandtimidmen, whobythemselvescoulddo nothing,goforthandnotonly performprodigiesofcourage, butchangecivilisation.Thus, thewholesecretofsuccess,aboutwhichlibraries havebeenwritten,iscontainedinthismysteryof, OurLady'sRosary.ForneithercanIdoanything, butifIrenouncemyselfandoffermylifetoGod. Hewillenterme,andthroughmenothingshallbr impossible.
