Toattainpeaceofmind inhisownlowstandardshe persuadedhimselfthatthe Churchwaswrongindemandinganygoodworksat all.Heconvincedhimself thatmanistotallydepraved,thathehasnofreewill, thatallman'sworksare evil,andthatGoddoesnot expectamantobeanything sbutdepraved.

Well-informedProtestants nolongerspeakofhis "saintliness."Theydwell uponhischampionshipof free-thought,andonhis successinoverthrowingthe tyrannyofRome. ForwhilstLutherwas undoubtedlyareligiousman, hewasalsoaveryunbalancedmanwhofailedto regulatehisreligiousinclinationsinaccordancewith God'slaws,andwhoindulgedotherinclinationsin equallyinexcusableways. Lutherhadastrangely complexcharacter.
H.A.L.Fisherspeaksof his"vastanimalpower,of hisgaietyandwit,hiscoarsenessandhumour,hiswild veinofromanceandcrabbed scholasticism,hisnaivepeasantsuperstitions,andmorbidself-criticism."(AHist. ofEurope.p.543).

Yet,thatLutherindulged hisvicesandconcupiscenseisclearfromhisown writings,wherehegivesdisgracefuldescriptionsof hisownindulgencein everythingpassionate. Hisdiariesrecordshockingexcessesofsensuality, whichcouldnotbeprinted inanydecentbookto-day.
