FatherPeytonwouldbe comingnextmonth,and woulddirectthefinalrally onSunday,December20, saidHisGrace.

TheArchbishopcongratulatedpriestsandpeopleon thebuildingoftheschool, andthankedtradesmenand helpersontheexcellent spiritwhichsavedtheparishabout£2.000bysuch voluntarylabour.

ItwashisseventhopeningintheSouthPerth RoadBoardarea,andthe ninthifoneincluded Aquinascollegeandthenew schoolthatwasontheway atManningPark.

Thatactivitywithinthe shortspaceof17years,since 1937,whenSt.Columba's churchwasopened,mustbe arecordofachievement.

HehadcometoComoexpectingtoseeagoodserviceableschool,continued HisGrace,butwhathesaw inthefinishedbuildingdelightedhim.

BishopGoodydeploredwhathedescribedas"extravagance"intheGovernment'sschoolbuildingprogrammesincethewar.It seemedironic,hesaid,that afterspendinglavishlyon "expensivetrimmings",the Governmentnowhadlittle moneyforschoolbuilding.

Hedescribedthenew class-roomsasahappy mediumbetweentheexpensiveGovernmentschools andtheovercrowded,poorly -designedschoolofthe past.

TheFamilyRosaryPledgewillnotbindunder painofsin.Thosewhosignitwillpledgethemselvestojointheirfamiliesinsettingasidetenminutes eachday,whenmostofthemembersofthefamilyare usuallyhome,fortherecitationoftheRosary.Those membersofthefamilywhoarenotpresent,andindividualswholivealone,mayfulfilthepledgebyrecitingtheRosaryprivately.

Thereisscarcelyanyneedtopointoutthatthe RosaryisMary'sspecialgifttomen.Historyhas repeatedlyprovedtheirresistiblepoweroftheRosary againsttheenemiesofChrist.

Forthereareseveralconsiderationswhichmaybe urgedagainstSirWinston's assumptionoftheroleof historian.Foronething heisfartooneartothe eventswhichhedescribes. Whileitmightseemadvantageoustohavethe factsmarshalledwhile memoryisyetgreen,itis wellnighimpossibletosee theminperspective.Again, heisdepictingeventswhich havenotyetreachedtheir culmination,anditis,there-' fore,appallinglyeasyto makethepartloomgreater thanthewholemayseemto afuturegeneration.

Whentheappallingconditionofhumanaffairsis viewedinitsuniversalimpact,thematerialistmay understandablyinclinetowardsdespair.Buthe learnsnothingfromthepastandproceedsagainand' againtotrustinhisdiplomats,politicians,generals. andprophets,whosespiritualbankruptcyispellucidly plain.TheChristian,ontheotherhand,seeingthe pauperismofspiritwhichplaguesourtimes,andrealisingthatthereisaDivineplaninhumanhistory, looksbeyondthebrokenhumanpropsforthesalvationofsociety.Heknowsthattheindividualmanis notself-sufficient;heisconvincedthemoresothat meninthemassneedthehelpofGodinalltheir affairsandespeciallysointhecomplexbusinessofrebuildingsociety.

Itistruethat,in1511, LuthervisitedRomeon monasticbusiness;buthe didnotlosehisfaithbecauseofanyabuseshesaw there.Hereturnedto,GermanyasstronginhisCatholicfaithashehadbeen priortohisvisit.

RespectedPope

Itwasonlyyearslater, afterhehadbeenexcommunicatedfromtheChurch, thathewrotetosayhehad foundRome"asinkofiniquity,itspriestsinfidels,the Papalcourtiersmenofshamelesslives,"andthathis reverenceforRomehad beenturnedintoloathing.

Buthewasinterpretinganearlierstateofmindin thelightofsubsequentpre- judices.Inreality,letters writtenbyLutherafterhis returnfromRomespeakof thePopewiththeutmost respect.

Thechangethatcame overhimhappenedsome fourorfiveyearsafterhis 'visittoRome,anditwas certainlynotasupernatural conversionduetothegrace ofGod.Lutherhadfailed inhisownlifetoliveup totheidealsofholinessthe CatholicChurchhadput beforehim.

Toattainpeaceofmind inhisownlowstandardshe persuadedhimselfthatthe Churchwaswrongindemandinganygoodworksat all.Heconvincedhimself thatmanistotallydepraved,thathehasnofreewill, thatallman'sworksare evil,andthatGoddoesnot expectamantobeanything sbutdepraved.

Thenheinventedtheconsolinggospelthatmanis savedbyfaithonly,andnot byworks.Belief,andnot goodbehaviour,wasthe secretofsalvationhence1forthtaughtbyMartin Luther.

Protestantswhoidealize MartinLutherurgehissupposedsanctityasanargumentinfavouroftheProtestantReformation..but

therearetwoLuthers,the Lutherofglainourisedfiction,andtheLutherofhistoryandfact. TheLutheroffictionappearsintheProtestant pulpit,intheSundaySchool, andinpartisanbiographies.ButtherealLutherwillbe foundinhiswritings-I mean,ofcourse,intheunexpurgatededitionsofthem. Well-informedProtestants nolongerspeakofhis "saintliness."Theydwell uponhischampionshipof free-thought,andonhis successinoverthrowingthe tyrannyofRome. ForwhilstLutherwas undoubtedlyareligiousman, hewasalsoaveryunbalancedmanwhofailedto regulatehisreligiousinclinationsinaccordancewith God'slaws,andwhoindulgedotherinclinationsin equallyinexcusableways. Lutherhadastrangely complexcharacter.

H.A.L.Fisherspeaksof his"vastanimalpower,of hisgaietyandwit,hiscoarsenessandhumour,hiswild veinofromanceandcrabbed scholasticism,hisnaivepeasantsuperstitions,andmorbidself-criticism."(AHist. ofEurope.p.543).

Dean'sEstimate Orturntoanotherauthoritywhosetestimonyis abovesuspicion.DeanW. R.Inge,ofSt.Paul's,London,isundoubtedlya scholar.HeisalsoundoubtedlyaProtestantwhotakes nopainstoconcealhisantipathytowardstheCatholic Church.YethereishisestimateofLuther,asgivenin hisbook"Protestantism," p.28:

Yet,thatLutherindulged hisvicesandconcupiscenseisclearfromhisown writings,wherehegivesdisgracefuldescriptionsof hisownindulgencein everythingpassionate. Hisdiariesrecordshockingexcessesofsensuality, whichcouldnotbeprinted inanydecentbookto-day.

AtrueapostleofChrist doesnotgiveventtosuch expressionsas,"Tobecontinentandchasteisnotin me,"or"WhydoIsitsoakedinwine?"Self-control wasnotinLuther.Hegave freereintohislowerpas-sions,calmlysayingthata manhastodoso,andwill notberesponsibleforsuch conduct.
