OsservatoreRomano,VaticanCitydaily,reported thatthePrimatewasseizedbyRedpoliceandtaken offtoanunknowndestinaliononSaturday,September 26.Thearrestfolloweda raidandnight-longsearch oftheCardinal'sresidence, thepapersaid.

In"suspending"Cardinal Wyszynskifromoffice,the ',Polishregimeemployeda monoeuvreithasusedrepeatedly.Theregimehas traditionallyrefrainedfrom usingtheword"arrest"in forciblyoustingBishops fromoffice.

TheWarsawregimeassertedthatitactedwithin "itsconstitutionalpowers" InforciblyoustingtheCardinal-Primatefromoffice.

Sir,-ImustconfessIam diappointedthat"Puzzled Parent"feelsthattheYouth Movementsareincapableof successfulactionagainst the"baronsoftheslush press".

Someoneoncesaidthat Catholicsdonotrealisejust howstrongtheyare.That isquitecorrect,butthe YCWisaware.Individual actionagainstthepublishers andprintersisuseless,but concertedactionthroughout theCommonwealthmayandIhopewill-forcethese barons,throughgovernment legislation,tostepdown.

ActionIsPlanned

ActioninthisStateisalreadybeingplanned,but prematurerevelationwould wrecktheseplans.Allthat Icansayisthatwhenthis actiontakesplace,"Puzzled Parent"andeveryCatholicwillbackthemovement tothehilt.

Unfortunately, "Puzzled parent"seemstohavean incompletepictureofthe Hierarchy'sattitude.

Withthe"deposing"ofCardinalWyszynskibin thePolishGovernment,itisclearerthatanimplacable persecutionseekstodestroytheChurchinmany lands.ThePolishBishopsthismonthchargedthe Warsawregimewith"amadwilltodestroytheCatholicChurch."Whileinthosepartsoftheworld Bishopsandpriestsarebeingkilledorwastingaway inprisonorotherwiseimpededfromspreadingthe Gospel,itisobviouslymorenecessarythaneverfor Catholicswhoarefreetosupportthemissionaryacv tivityoftheChurch.

Theoutpouringofthebloodofto-day'smartyrsfor Christisthestreamthatwillcarryourcharityto ChristonthisMissionSunday.Whenwerealisethat thepriceoflifeitselfisbeingpaidfortheprecious possessionoffaithliterallybythousandsinmany landsto-day,howlittleisexpectedofus!

Thereare80,000menandwomenmissionariesin some600missionterritoriesoftheChurch.There,the Church.throughthehandsofthesemissionaries,is buildingschools,churches,hospitals,orphanages,and evenhomesfortheprecioussoulsthattheworldhas neglected.

Inasenseeachcontributortothemissionsonthis comingSundayisformingthebricksandmortarfor thatvastmission-buildingprogrammethattheChurck hasinoperation.Morethanthat,withtheprayers andalmsofferedthisSunday,Catholicswillbehelpingthemissionariessnatchthesoulsoftheirfellow, menfromtheforcesofevilandbringthemtotheconsolationsofthefaithinChrist.

Then,startlinglyenough, afterthisexpositionofyour ideas,youdemandtoknow why,giventhisstateof mind,youshouldn'tescape pectofwhichyouwouldnotijudgment.Inotherwords,if beheldaccountable.ButIhaveunderstoodyourletwhenitcametowhatI,tersaright,youhavenow calledthe"naturallaw",desertedthepositionwhich i.e.,thatexpressionofanyoutookagainstyourwife, unchangeablemoralorderandhavecomeintothearwhichiswrittenintohumangumentthistimeonher side,askingforacquittal now,andnottherighttobe condemned.

Well,thiswastheanswer withwhichyounowannouncedissatisfaction.The factthatyouaredissatisfieddoesnotintheleast surpriseme.TheutmostI couldhavehopedfor,even ifIhadarguedonthisdifficultsubjectwithaeogencyandclaritygreater thanonecanusuallyobtain overtheair,wastoshow youwhatpositionaCatholic oughtlogicallytotakeup onthematterofyourresponsibilitybeforeGod. Icanhardlyexpectyou toagreewiththisposition yourself,sinceyoudonot admittheprinciplesby whichaCatholicjudges;all Ilookedforwasarecognitionofthefactthat,if Catholicteachingisindeed true,yoursituationissuch asIhavetriedtooutline: thatistosay,oneinwhich yourmoralresponsibilityis lessenedbutnoteliminated.

RightingConscience

Butdoyoureallyhold thoseviews?Idon'tdoubt thatyoudo-onthesurface ofyourmind.Butdoyou reallyholdthemdeepinthe centreofyourpersonality, wherethestrongestconvictionsarerooted? Idon't know,andIhaven'tthe righttosay.ButIhavea suspicionyoudon't,because otherwisethequestionswith whichyouplymecould hardlyarise.

Ishallreplybrieflytonightaboutyourquestion regardingresponsibility,and returnnextweektodeal withyourcentralproblem -therealnatureofright andwrong.

Ontheotherhand,ifyoudeliberatelysidesteptheessentialandcentraldictates ofyourconscience,turning adeafeartoitsmostcharacteristicdeliveries,Ithink youmustdosoonlywith violencetoyourownnature, andinsofarasyoudothat youmustbeatoddswith yourself,secretinginyours personalityacontradiction betweenwhatyouareand whatyoudo,betweenwhat youaremadeforandwhat youaremakingofyourself.
