ArchbishopBlessesAdditions ToNarrogin'sConventSchool

TheextensionstoSt.Matthew'sSchool, Narrogin,wereblessedandopenedbyHis GracetheArchbishoponSundayafternoon, Oct.4.Priortotheceremonyofblessing, alargecrowdassembledinthechurchtorecitetheRosary,thusinvokingtheblessingof AlmightyGodandthepatronageofOur BlessedLadyontheimportantworkbeinginauguratedthatday.

PontificalBenedictionwas givenbyHisGrace,assistedbytheRev.J.Hoganas deacon,andtheRev.J. Leechassub-deacon.

ThemembersoftheNarroginbranchoftheHoly Namesocietyprovideda guardofhonourforHis Graceonhisarrivalatthe school,wherethebrief ceremonyofblessingthe newclassroomswascarried outbytheArchbishop.Assembledonthespacious verandahwkthHisGrace weretheparishpriest,(the Rev.M.Giles),FatherJ. Leech(parishpriestof Kondinin),theMayorof Narrogin(Mr.T.Hogg),and Mrs.Hogg,thedistrict member(Mr.V.Doney) andMrs.Doney.

Theparishpriest,inan introductoryaddress,extendedaverycordialwelcometoHisGracetheArchbishop,especiallyasthe purposeofhisvisitwasto performaceremonymost pleasingtohim-thebless'ingandopeningofyetanotherschool.Henceitwas withthegreatestofpleasurethatheaskedHis Gracetoopenthenew building.

Mr.C.R.Wright-Webster, onbehalfoftheparishioners,endorsedtheaddressof welcome.

Indeclaringopenthenew sectionofthebuilding,the Archbishopoutlinedthe principlesofCatholiceducationandthereasonsfor theestablishmentofCatholicschools.Thegrowthof Narroginandthesurroundingdistrictshadmadethe extensionstotheschoolvery necessary,sothattheteachingofreligiousandsecular subjectssocapablyimpart- 'edbytheSistersofthe CongregationoftheMisiionsduringthepast35 yearsmightbedoneincircumstancesfavourableto achievingthebestresults.

Nowthattheparishhada schoolcommodiousand comfortable,thesublime -

workofteachingtherising generationtoknowand serveGodandtobeloyalto theircountrywouldbeall themoreenhancedand effective.

Afittingtitlethatcould beinscribedovertheschool wouldbe"EducatioChristianasaluspopuliest,"a Christianeducationisthe salvationofthepeople,said HisGrace.Havingbeen imbuedwiththesalutary principlesofareligious training,thepupilswouldbe goodChristiansandlawabidingcitizensreadyto workforAustralia,livefor Australia,andifneedsbe dieforAustralia,asso manyofthepupilsofCatholicschoolsdidinboth worldwars.

ReligionIsBasis

Finally,theArchbishop thankedtheparishpriest, theSisters,andthepeople fortheopportunityofperformingaceremonyvery deartohisheart,theblessingandopeningofyetanotherschool.

TheparishpriestofKondinin,theRev.J.Leech madetheappeal,briefly sketchingtheuniversalrule oftheCatholicChurchin everycountryoftheworld, of establishingschools whereinstructioninChristiandoctrinewouldbegiven firstandforemostasanecessarybasisforallother teaching.Withoutproperlyimparteddirectionin learningtheelementary truthsofChristianity,even theBible,wouldbeinadequateinprovidingasufficientknowledgeandtraining inthebattleoflife.

TheMayorofNarrogin andMr.V.Doneyeach spokebriefly,thankingthe parishpriestandtheparishionersfortheinvitation tobepresentatsucha pleasantfunction.

SinceSept.20,infourceremonies,in theparishesofLbedervilleandFremantle, andatSantaMariaandLoretocolleges, some684persons,adultsandchildren,re-* ceivedtheSacramentofConfirmationfrom theMost.Rev.L.J.Goody,AuxiliaryBishop. AfteranintervalofthreeTheceremonyconcluded years,St.Mary'schurch, Leederville,wasagainthe settingfortheConfirmation ceremony.Threehundred candidateswerepresented toHisLordship,Bishop Goody.AssistingtheBishopweretheRev.J. O'BrienandtheRev.E. McKenna.

gressinthebeginningwasparishaconsiderablesum slow,becauseoftheshort-ofmoney.Tothemhewas ageofmaterials,oncerestrictionswereeasedno timewaslostinproceeding withtheplanspreparedby Messrs.E.LeB.Henderson andThompson.Thebuilders,Messrs.Harnettand Horner,erectedtheadditionstotheschoolinamost workmanlikeandthorough manner.Tobotharchitectsandbuildershisthanks weredueforagoodjobaccomplishedinacomparativelyshorttime.

Themenoftheparishhad devotedthreeSaturdaysto theerectionofanewfence aroundtheschoolgroundsnosmalltaskwhenitwas consideredthatitinvolved thereplacingofover500 feetoffencing.Theirvoluntarylaboursavedthe

mostgrateful.Hewished alsotothanktheMunicipalityofNarroginfortheir servicesinmakingavailable theirworkmenandplant forlevellingtheschool grounds.Finally,hethankedHisWorshiptheMayor andtheHon.Mr.Doneyfor theirattendanceatthefunction.

FatherGilesthenasked HisGracetograciopsly grantaholidaytotheSistersandchildrenthenext day,arequestreadilyaccededtobytheArchbishop, andreceivedwithacclamationbythechildren.

Thefunctionwasbrought toaconclusionwiththe servingofafternoonteaby theladiesoftheparish.

Mr.McLaughlin,now33 yearsofage,waseducated bytheSistersofNazareth inAberdeen,Scotland.At theageof14hecameout tothisStatetojoinhisrelatives.Eventuallyhemade hishomewithMrs.andthe lateJ.P.Maxwell,apro- minentcoupleinCatholic activitiesofawiderange.

Afterthreeyears,hewent totheChristianBrothers Agriculturalcollegeat Tardunbutdevelopedno inclinationforrurallife.

HethenjoinedtheMerchantNavyandinthecourse ofhisvoyagesre-visitedthe MissesRushwithwhomhe hadformerlyboardedin Aberdeen.Itwasonthis briefvisitthathemetthe boyfromIceland,Hakon Loftsson,whoisto-daya priestinhisnativeland.

TheHon.Mr.O'Sullivan, MinisterforTradeandCustoms,saidinamessage totheChristianBrothers thatheadmiredthemfor theirdevotiontothetask oftrainingtheyoung.Itwas splendidtestimony,hestated,thataftersoshorta period,Bindoonwasableto accommodate180boys.He offeredhissincerecongratulationstothem.

Ofcoursenowthatthe aristocracyofbirthand purchaseinyieldingplace tothearistocracyofachievement,astheconferringof baronetciesonjockeysand actorswitnesses,wemay fairlysaythattheacting professionhas"arrived" socially.

WestPerthN.C.G.M.and Y.C.W.leaderswiththeir friendsgatheredtogetherat thehomeofMrs.Broderick onSept.9anddiscussedthe subjectsofsport,filmsand legitimatestage,thepoints ofdiscussionbeingtheaverageattitude,theChristian attitudeandinfluence.

Lengthydiscussionwas heldonsportandtheinfluencearisingtherefrom wasfoundtobegenerally good.Itwasfoundthat sporthelpsyouthtomix morefreelywithothers,to possessacertainamountof "give-and-take"andgenerallypromotesahealthy outlookonlife.Butitwas foundthatitcanmakeone uncharitableandselfishand abadloser.Mostsport, though,couldnotbetermed immoral. Afterciuiteanumberof

membershadgiventheir viewsonfilms,itwasfound thattheaverageperson, andyoungpersonsparticularly,attendsafilmatleast onceaweek.Afewcases werequotedofpeopleattendingthreeandfour timesinoneweek.

Hereweobservedthekeen attentiontoexpressivedetailwhichcharacterisesJuan JoseCastro'sconducting.

Thepervadingatmosphereofthissymphonyis oneofserenity,reflecting thebeautyofaruralscene. Theconductorcapturedthe trueessenceofthisparticu- larkindofmusicalbeauty, penetratingintoitsinner substance,sothattheperformancetrulyconveyedto usthequietlovelinessof thecountryside.

Thecontrastofthissection withtherichsingingstyle ofthenextsectionwasadmirable.

With"ALincolnPortrait" inthesecondhalfofthe programme,theorchestra gaveusthegracefulcharm of"SoireesMusicales,"a suiteofRossinidancesarrangedbyBenjaminBritten.WithMr.Castroconducting,therhythmofthese dances(whichincluded amongothersaTirolese andaBolero)wasexactly right.
