DuringtheweekthemembersoftheLegislative Assemblyagreedtothepassageofaprivatebillenablingamantomarryhisdivorcedwife'ssisteranda womantobemarriedtoherdivorcedhusband'sbrother.Onlyonedissientvoice-thatofDameFlorenceCardell-Oliver-washeardduringthedebateon legislationwhichisagrossaffronttotheChristian andnationalconscience.

ThesordidbusinesswasintroducedbyMr.Watts, leaderoftheCountryParty,onthemostcuriouspretext.Heisreportedassayingthattheprovisionsof thepresentproposedlawwereinadvertentlyomitted fromthe1948legislation.Wefeelfreetodoubtthis assertion,andtobelievethattheomissionwasmade soasnottojeopardisethepassageofameasurefurtherwideningthegroundsofdivorce.

However,evenifMr.Watts'explanationisentertained,itstillremainsdifficulttoseethenecessityof thepresentmeasureinviewofthelegalhistory,qwit- edfromareportoftheSolicitorGeneral,bytheMinisterforJusticeandMr.Watts.

AttheNorthPerthhome ofMr.andMrs.P.R. Goerkeaneveningwas givenrecentlyforthedual purposeofraisingfunds forthecurrentTherryproductionandforpro- vidingaveryentertaining eveningforallpresent. Squaredancing,which roundedofftheactivitiesof theevening,wasverypopularwithyoungandold.

Thesocietyisnowplan-ningforitsChristmaspro- ductionanditiswiththis endinviewthatallmembersareaskedtoattend theirweeklymeetingto discussthevariousideasso farprojectedfortheChristmasplay.

Sunday,Sept.27wasan occasionunprecedentedin thehistoryofSt.Jerome's church,Spearwood,when onehundredandfive(105) childrenandadultswere confirmedbyHisGracethe Archbishop,assistedbyRt. Rev.Mgr.J.J.Rafferty, Adm.,Rev.R.Boylan,and theRev.J.Chokolich,the parishpriest.

CongregationStands

Becauseofthesizeofthe congregation,andinorder thatallmightwitnessthe ceremony,theseatswere removedfromthechurch, andMass,Confirmationand Benedictionwereobserved, standingandkneeling,this factaddingtothesolemnity oftheoccasion.Itisestimatedthat500people gainedentrytothechurch,

ThetruismisevenmorestartlingwhencontrastedwiththeEnglishscenewhere"reform"ofthissort isconstrainedbyvirtueoftheestablishmentofthe EnglishChurchandbythepoliticalpowerofthe LordsSpiritual.

Whenthenewspiritualestablishmentwasmade inEngland,the"reformed"Churchtookoverthe canonsoftheOldFaith.Inthismatterofthepro- hibiteddegreesinmarriagetheforbiddencategories ofaffinityweresetoutin1563,andaregiveninthe PrayerBook.TheEnglishlawof1835simplyadoptedthese,andupto1907itwasillegalforamanto marryhisdeceasedwife'ssister.Evento-daya manmaynotmarryhisdivorcedwife'ssister.

InAustralia,however,theprocessofmoral ecaywasaccelerated.InthisStatetheEnglishlaw ofthedeceasedwife'ssisterwasanticipatedbysome 31years.

TheprovisionsofthepresentBill,whilenot directlyprovidinganewgroundfordivorce,certainlyintroduceintofamilylifeaspeciesoftemptation whichpasttimesconsideredshouldnotevenbespecu- latedupon.

Everybodyrecognisesthatthereisacertainreverenceowingtorelativesandparentswhichisopposedtosexualintercoursebetweenthemeveninmarriage.

Ifnearrelationsareencouraged,astheycertainly arebytheproposedBill,tocontemplatemarriage. thewayismadeplainforpromiscuousimmoralityof amosthatefulkind.Inthesedaysofthehousing shortage,theissueisverypracticalandpressing, whenverymanyfamilieshavecloserelationsliving withintheirdomesticcircle.

Iftheseedofsuspicionisplantedandtheproximityofoccasionprovidedonthefamily'sveryhearth. awholefloodofunhappinessmaybeunloosed.The mutuallove,confidence,trustandrespectbetween bloodrelationsandthoserelatedinthefirstdegreeof affinitywillbeconstrained,weakenedandfinally brokendown.

DameCardell-Oliver'soppositiontothisunnaturalproposalistobeheartilycommended,asisthe constantendeavourtocheckthewideningofthe groundsofdivorce.Butitmusthavebeenastrange spectaclethatonlyonememberoftheHouseof41, andthatoneawoman,thoughtitnecessaryordesirabletospeakinthedefenceofmarriedlove,home life,thesanctityofthebond,andevenofnaturalaffection'However,inthevoting,eightmenlenttheir weight,unavailingly,towardsnegativingthemeasure.TheywereMessrs.J.Brady,J.Hegney,W. Hegney,Manning,May,Nalder,O'Brien,andBovell. ThisabominableBillisnowbeforetheCouncil, andonlypromptandvigorousactioncanbringabout itsdefeat.Inthis,asinsomanyothermattersnearlyaffectingtheChristianlife,itisatonceunphilosophicandaderelictionofduty,tocomplainafterthe event.Wedeemitaresponsibilityinconscience, andanimperativeoneatthat,forallCatholicorganisationsandindividualstoprotestwithoutdelayto theirparliamentaryrepresentativesagainstthismeasurewhichsomilitatesagainstthefamilyandthe home.

Wehavepeopletalking aboutthe "beloved"agedpoor",the poor''andsoon, Wearetoldthe"poor"love children.Theydon'tlove themanymorethanothers do.There'snoreasonwhy theyshould.

God,theydidnotglorify HimasGod"(Rom.i,18-21). Itispossibletoadmitthe existenceofpracticalatheists,thatis,menwho knowingtheexistenceof God,liveasiftherewereno God.Itisimpossibletoadmittheexistenceofnegative atheists,thatis,men,who endowedwithperfectuse ofreason,havenoideaof God,notevenaprimitive andconfusedidea,butwho invinciblyandinculpably areignorantofHisexistence.

PeaceConventionWillFollowRed

Leninin1920,andapplied toAustraliain1922,were perfectedindetailandappliedonaworldscalebythe VlIthWorldCongressofthe CommunistInternational, whichwasheldinMoscow inJulyandAugust,1935. Chiefarchitectoftheper- fectedplanswasthethen cominternGeneralSecretary,thelateGeorgDimitroy,who,priortohisdeath in1949,wasPremierofthe "People'sDemocracy"of Bulgaria.

Facedwiththenecessity ofbuildingamassfollowing fortheParty,ComradeDimitrovurgedthebuilding ofaunitedfrontofthe workingclassandabroad "People'sFront,"bothcontrolledbytheCommunist Party.

Dimitrovclearlyexplained thepurposeoftheunited front:

"Wewanttodrawincreasinglywidemassesintothe revolutionaryclassstruggle andleadthemtotheprole- tarianrevolution,proceedingfromtheirvitalinterests andneedsasthestarting" point,andtheirownexperienceasthebasis."(Proceedings,p.192).

ExchangingWars

Amongstthedecisionsof theCongress,weread:

"Thestruggleforpeace opensupbeforetheCommunistPartiesthegreatest opportunitiesforcreating thebroadestunitedfront. Allthoseinterestedinthe preservationofpeaceshould bedrawnintothisunited front."(Proceedings,page 591).

EarlierintheCongress, oneoftheItaliandelegates, ComradeErcoli(heisnow knownasTogliatti),had madesomeverysignificant statements:

(1)"Wedefendpeace,not becauseweareflabbyTolstoyans(Pacifists),butbecausewearestrivingtoensuretheconditionsforthe victoryoftherevolution.

An"AustralianConventiononPeaceandWar,"plannedtobeheldinSydneyon September26-30,followedbyaConferenceinMelbourneonOctober8-9,hasbeen beenspaciouslyadvertisedintheEasternStates.AtthesametimeaprominentCommunistleader,Mr.ErnestThornton,hasarrivedbackinAustraliafromPekingand othercentresofsimilar"Peace"conventions.Itisnotdifficulttorecogniseinthe Conventionallthefamiliarsignsofthe"Peace"Movementwhichwasdevisedatthe SeventhWorldCongressoftheCommunistInternational,heldatMoscowin1935.

Theideaofturning"imperialist"warintocivilwar for"peace"wasrecently re-echoedbyPietroNenni, leaderoftheLeftWing SocialistFrontinItaly.In aspeechatVerona,reportedintheCommunist"Tribune"(3June1950),Nenni declared:

"Ifthecommencementof acounter-revolutionarywar forcestheSovietUnionto settheWorkers'andPeasants'RedArmyinmotion forthedefenceofsocialism, theCommunistswillcall uponalltoilerstowork, withallthemeansattheir disposalandatanyprice, forthevictoryoftheRed Armyoverthearmiesof theimperialists."(Proceedings,page595).

AftertheVIlthWorld Congress,boguspeaceorganizationsunderCommunist controlsprangupinevery partofthenon-Communist world.HereinAustralia,an organizationknownasthe 'LeagueAgainstWarand Fascism"becameovernight the"LeagueforPeaceand Democracy."AninternationalPeaceCongress,sponsoredbytheComintern, washeldinBrusselsin1936.

Themovementissuedthe firstofaseriesofroneoed bulletinson20July1953.

Itannouncedthat"representativesfromVictoria, Queensland,SouthAustralia andNewSouthWales"had metatthePhillipStreet, Sydney,headquarters,"to establishthenationalorganisationfortheAustralian ConventiononPeaceand War."

Invitations,itwassaid, hadbeenissuedtocertain overseaspersonalitiesto attendtheConvention.

Butwhatoftherestof ourcountrymenherein Australia-thosefour-fifths whoarenotofourChurch? Forthemajorityofthem, too,Ithink,thetitleconstitutesadifficulty.How manyofthemlookuponthe faithwhichtheEnglish royallineprofessesasrepresentingexactlytheir ownreligiousbeliefs?Not soverymany,whenallis saidanddone.Sothequestionrecurs:"Defenderof whoseFaith?".Notthefaith ofCatholics,notthefaith ofthenon-Conformistsects, notthefaithofJews,not thefaithofthoselargenumberswhohaPenosettledreligiousconvictionsatall.

Itfollowsthatthetitle canonlyrefertothefaith oftheChurchofEngland. ButtheChurchofEngland is,inAustralia,notan establishedChurch.Nordo thenumbersofitsadherents,nominalorreal,put itinanypositiontocall thetune,inreligiousmatters,tothewholecountry.

Thetitle,then,"Defender oftheFaith,"mustberecognizedasaninconvenient one,atleasthereinAustralia,andthereneedbeno sighsoveritsomission.
