Heart-StirringMusic
Theprogrammeforthe nightconsistedofthree works,commencingwith Mendelssohn's"Hebrides" overture.ThiswasourintroductiontoHerrHans Schmidt-Isserstedt,under whosebatonourorchestra gaveoneofitsfinestperformancesoftheseason: andthiswasachieved,not bytheconductor'sforcing andstrainingattheorchestra,butratherbyhisdeep sinceritywhichconveyeditselftotheplayerssothat theirheartswerestirred, andtheygaveforthheartstirringmusic.
Theconcertconcluded withTschaikowsky'sSymphonyNo.5,whoseperformancewaschargedwithemotionalforceandintensely romantic.Yettherewas notraceoffemininityinthe romance-inthedramatic momentsofthis,asofthe othertwoworks,thepassionateplayingwasessentiallymasculine.Where quietandrestraintwererequired,theplayingwasgentleandsensitive. enjoyedTheaudiencethoroughly theconcertand applaudedgratefully.One feltthatallpresentmust have uplifteddepartedwithhearts andalastingmemoryofthenight'sstirringmusic.-M.K.
