Thatheisapriestto-dayisattributedtotheinfluenceofan orphan,theninoneofourreligiousinsitutionsinW.A.,bytheRev. HakonF.Loftsson,ofAkureyri,Iceland.Itisaremarkable storyofhowGracewassenttohimacross10,000milesofocean.

InalettertotheRt.Rev. Mgr.Rafferty,Adm.,Father Loftssonrelatestheextraordinarycircumstances whichledtohisconversion.

In1935,asaladattendingschoolinAberdeen, Scotland,FatherLoftsson livedwiththeMissesJenny andCatherineRush.These goodladieswerestaunch Catholicsandendeavoured toinstilsomereligious rainingintothelonely, Lutheranboycommittedto theircare.

Whateverthezealofthe ladiesmighthaveachieved, kowever,wasquicklyungonebyafellow-boarder, who,onwalkswiththelad, fliedhimwitharrantsuperstitionsagainstCatholics.

HetoldhimthatCatholicshadtopayfortheforgivenessofsins,andawhole lotmoreinignorantvein. Theboydidnotknowwhat tobelieve,butbegantobekevethatCatholics,"asa whole,werealittle strange."

Intothisspiritualtug-o'warwalkedJerry-aladof 15,whohadcomefroman institutionconductedbythe

SoitwasthatJerry (FatherLoftssonneverknew hissurname)becameunwittinglythemessengerof God'sGrace.HakonLoftssonbecameaCatholicanda priest,andhasbeenlabouringinhisnativeLutheran countryofIcelandsince 1947. HehasneverforgottenHisGrace,whoisinvesJerry,andhaswishedfortigatingthespiritualand yearstogetintouchwithmaterialconditionsofMalhim.But,alas!theoldtesemigrants,inAustralia, ladiesofAberdeenhaddiedhasbeenwarmlywelcomed andhisletterswerereturn-intheEasternStates.Asa ed.HethinksJerryre-resultofhisenquirieshe turnedtoPerthafterhishasannouncedhewillbe visittoAberdeen. abletomakeanoptimistic IfthisshouldreachthereportinMalta.

MotherGenevieve,who willultimatelyvisitthe300 HousesoftheLittleSisters throughouttheworld,has justcompletedvisitationin AmericaandCanada.

TheLittleSistersofthe PoorwerefoundedinAustraliaatRandwick,N.S.W. in1886.Theycareforthe agedpoor,regardlessof creed,whomtheyregardas sufferingmembersof Christ,andtowhomthey devotethemselvestotally.

TheGlendaloughHome

fortheagedpoorwasfoundedfromSydneyinMay 1920.Twenty-threeSisters carefor150inmatesofboth sexes.

IntheReservegrade,the "Saints"hadnoticeable successandhavewontheir waytothegrandfinal,to beplayedonSaturday,Sept. 19.Thiswasfinallyacheivedbydowningthestrong OldModernianteamlast Saturday,scorebeing2-1. Afeatureoftheplaywas MickConnolly'seffortin scoringtwoveryneatgoals, thefirstoneinparticular beingbrilliant.Therestof theteamablysupported Mickandtheresultwasa verysatisfactoryone.

Theprogrammeopened fittinglywithastirring chorus,"Gentlemen,the Queen!"Afterthatitwas Britishhistoryrunwild,interspersedwitholdandnew melodies,allofanEnglish flavour.Asashowitwas well-balanced-short,snappyitemsinquicksuccessionwithadefiniteunderlyingthemewhichputit inaclassabovetheaveragevarietyshow.

Thescriptswerewritten bytheversatilepair,Jim TondutandCliveWiltshire, whowerealsoresponsible fortheproduction.Their fertileimaginationsmade muchmerrimentoutofsuch historicalfiguresasRobin Hood,HenryVIII.,ElizabethandEssex,Captain Cook,andevenJ.Arthur Rank.TheVictoriaPark Youthgroupshaveproved conclusivelythatvariety showscanbehumourous andentertainingwithout anycoarsenessorcrudeness.

TheVictoriaParkYouth Movementsetaveryhigh standardforthemselvesin attemptingaTownhall concert,anditistotheir creditthattheycamevery neartoreachingthathigh standard.Itistobehopedthatthisonlyreflects theirhighidealsandstandardsineveryaspectofthe movementapostolate.Their showwasasuccessbecause allthecastsoobviouslyput their-verybestintoit.

Manynewmembershave joinedthemovementsasa resultoftheconcert,the olderoneshavegainedis poise,andselfconfidence, andithasinjectedagood friendlyspiritintotheir branches;so,alltold,ithas paiddividendsinmoreways thanone.-"V.P."

Theoldcouple,whorecentlycelebrated their69thweddinganniversary,havebeen subscriberstothis paperfromsoonafter itsestablishmentin 1874.Theyarestillwidelyknowntothepresentlettersgenerationfortheir anddescriptions ofearlydaysinthe colonywhichhaveappearedontheChildren'spageunderthe pennamesof"GrandmotherandGrandfather".

Thispioneeringcouplehavenothadan easytime.Bothwere bornof familiesearlymigrant atbushsettlements,Mr.Eastcott's homeinhisearlychildhoodbeingatworoomedjarrahandpa- perbarkhutinthearea nowknownasQueen's Parkandinthosedays referredtoasBlackboySwamp.

Mrs.EastcottwasformerlyMaryAngela Bancells.Herfather cametoAustraliaasa Benedictinenovicewith agroupofmonkswho laterfoundedNew Norciamonastery.

Findinghehadnovocationhemarriedayoung Irishmigrant.Theytookup landatRivervale,where Mr.Mancellsgrewfruitand vegetablesforPerthand Fremantlemarket.Asa younggirlMaryAngela Bancellshelpedherfather withhisfriutandvegetable roundand,inthisway,came toknowPerthandFremantle,inherwords,"like thepalmofmyhand."

MaryAngelaBancellsand WilliamJosephEastcott weremarriedin1884atSt. Mary'sCathedral,Perth,by thelateFatherDuff.

About18monthslater theyleftthetownshipwith alltheirpossessionspiled ontoathree-horsedrayto takeuptheirownholdingin virginbushatwhatisnow thetownshipofWagerup.

Mrs.Eastcottwasnursing asix-months-oldbabyand the bushjourneythroughthe tookthemthreedays andthreenights.Theonly implementsMr.Eastcotthad tohelphimclearhisland andgethiscropssownwere

ashovel,arakeandahoe. Theyfirstcroppedin1889. EARLYFARMING.

IttookMr.Eastcotttwo yearstoclearandsowfour acres.Inbetweentendingto thewantsofheryoungfamilyMrs.Eastcottrelieved herhusbandofthelighter dutiesaboutthefarm.This includedgrowingthevegetables(ajobatwhichshe hadhadplentyofpractice asayounggirlatRivervale)andhelpingwiththe clearing.Therewasnomilkinginthoseearlyyearsas theEastcottscouldnotaffordacow.Thenearest neighbourwasaboutseven milesawaysoforMrs.Eastcott'sfamilymilkwasa rareluxuryandbutterwas unheardofinthosefirst hardyears.

"Itmakesmesmile,"she said,"whenIhearyoung mothersdiscussingbaby foodstoday.Home-baked breadandsagowereallthe babyfoodsIhadtogive mychildrenaftertheywere weaned."

Mr.andMrs.Eastcott, wholivewiththeirdaughter,Mrs.Usher,didnot haveapartytocelebrate theirsixty-ninthwedding anniversary,butspentthe thedayquietlyandhappily together.

Theybothhaveremarkablyretentivemindsanda treasure-houseofmemoriesintowhichtheycan delve.

Theopeningofatimber millatYarloopin1895was aboontotheEastcotts.It providedthemwitha marketfortheirfarmproduce.Theywereableto buycows,andoncethe cowswerepurchasedtheyincreasedtheirincomefurtherbythesaleofbutterto themill-workers.

Attheearlyageoffifteen,Ozanamwentthrough aseveretrialwhichlasted fortwelvemonthsin doubtsaboutthefaithand indespairofsalvation. Laterhewroteofthat searchingexperience:

Theconcertconcluded withTschaikowsky'sSymphonyNo.5,whoseperformancewaschargedwithemotionalforceandintensely romantic.Yettherewas notraceoffemininityinthe romance-inthedramatic momentsofthis,asofthe othertwoworks,thepassionateplayingwasessentiallymasculine.Where quietandrestraintwererequired,theplayingwasgentleandsensitive. enjoyedTheaudiencethoroughly theconcertand applaudedgratefully.One feltthatallpresentmust have uplifteddepartedwithhearts andalastingmemoryofthenight'sstirringmusic.-M.K.
