InthepresenceofalargerepresentativegatheringfromFremantleandPerth, HisLordshipBishopGoody,ontheafternoon ofAug.23,unveiledthefoundationstone andsolemnlyblessedanddeclaredopenthe JuniorateoftheSistersofOurLadyofthe MissionsatTuckfield-street,Fremantle.

AfterBenedictionofthe BlessedSacrament,which wasgivenintheconvent ehapel,HisLordshipreturnedtotheJuniorateandaddressedthepeoplefromthe balcony.Ontheplatform 'besidetheBishopwerethe Rev.G.O'Callaghan,parish priestofEastFremantle; theRev.T.W.Purcell, O.M.I.,andtheV.Rev.F.E. Hope,Adm.Alsopresent weretheRev.J.Hawkins, 1.J.,theRev.H.Kearin andtheRev.H.Kelly.

AfterFatherO'Callaghan ladintroducedhim,His Lordship,inaneloquent addressoutlinedbrieflythe purposeandnecessityofa Juniorate.TheJuniorate,he id,wasaspecialsortof hoolforyoungpeople whobelievedtheyhada vocationtothereligiouslife. Itdidnotimposeanyobligationnordiditcallfora verygreatdecision.Itwas merelyahelptothedevelopmentandstrengthening vetgracesalreadyreceived.

timehesetforthvery strikinglytheimportanceof theworkatwhoseinaugurationtheywerethatafternoonassisting.Itwasan importantwork,hesaid,not fortheparishalone,forits aimwasnotparochial.It wasaworkwhoseinfluence

wouldbefeltthroughout thewholearchdioceseand throughoutthewhole Church.

Thepeopletherepresent werelivingcellsinChrist's MysticalBody,andthatit waswhichhadbroughtthem thereinspiteofallthedistractionswhichaSunday afternoonhadtooffer.He likenedthespreadingofthe Faithtoamatchwhich, thoughverysmall,could enkindleagreatconflagration.Thegirlswhowent forthfromtheJuniorate wouldenkindlethelightof Fathiinmanyaheart,and thosepresentthatafternoon

wouldhaveashareinthat greatwork.

SisterMonicaHas ConcludedFifty YearsInSchools

RecentlyinthechapeloftheSistersof St.Joseph'sconvent,SouthPerth,aMiss* CantatawascelebratedatwhichHisGrace theArchbishoppresided.Theceremony wastogivethankstoGodforthegolden _jubileeofreligiousprofessionofSisterM. Monica,awell-knownmemberoftheSistersofSt.JosephoftheSacredHeart. Thecelebrantwasthe Rt.Rev.Mgr,J.T.McMahonassistedbytheRev. W.Buckley.

Acombinedchoirofthe Sistersandschoolchildren receivedtheapprobationof allbytheirrenderingof theGregorianchantandthe appropriate,"VeniSponsa Christi".

Inconclusion,heurged hislistenerstomakeanallotmentwhereneither thievesnortax-collectors couldbreakthroughand steal,sothatwhentheyears hadpassedandtheyhad gonewheretheirtreasure was,theywouldbeableto lookdownandsee,shining inthedarkness,thelittle lightsthatthey,bytheirgenerosity,hadsetonfire.

Afternoonteawasthen dispensedontheconvent lawn,afterwhichthebuildingwasthrownopenfor inspection.

J.Kearney,S.C.A.,ofBroome,andtheRev.J.Luemmen,S.C.A. Rev.E.Worms,S.C.A.,alsoofBroome,waspresent,andmostof theBrothersfromtheChristianBrothers'Agriculturalschool Intheafternoon,theP.J.Clune,andanarrange-sons.TheRev.Albert MostRev.A.J.Gummer,mentwasmadewherebytheScherzinger,S.C.A.,wasthe BishopofGeraldton,gavePallottineswouldbecomerector,andalessspiritual Poro,ficalBenediction.Alsoshare-farmerswiththemanwouldhavegivenup presentweretheV.Rev.ArchbishopintheTardunindespair.Theywereso DeanM.Lynch,ofMullewa,district,'providedthatthepoorthattherewasno theRev.T.BryanofMor-Pallottineswouldundertakemoneytobuybinder-twine thespiritualcareofthatfortheharvest.Christmas district.HisGracewasatdinnertreatwasapacket thattimeAdministratorforofbiscuitsforall,anda theDioceseofGeraldton.Hebottleofwine.Another alsowaslookingforafarmChristmasdinnerwasgractosupporthisinstitutionatedbythepresentofanapple Castledare. each.

Hisaudience,hecon-awa,theRev.K.Spainof ThreeSprings,andtheRev. *ruled,hadallnoticedtheN.TobinofGeraldton. statueofthe'VirginMost Powerful'placedneartheDr.CluneAgrees entrance,andmostofthem,ThepresentPallottine .onaccountofthedevotion oftheMiraculousMedal, werefamiliarwiththetitle. ItwasunderOurLady'sinvocationthattheworkwas beingbegun.

HisLordshipthenrecalledthestoryoftheapparitiontoSt.CatherineLaboure,whenthesaint,noticingtherayscomingfrom OurLady'sjewelledhands, askedwhysomegemsgave forthnorays.OurLady repliedthatthosejewelsrepresentedthegracesfor whichnoonehadbothered ioask.Thepresentwork requiredmanygracesand itwasapityiftheywere notbestowedbecauseno onebotheredtoaskfor them.

TributetoOrder

Somuchdependedonthe *8uccessoftheJuniorate,for fromitwouldcomethe novicesandSistersoftomorrow,Sisterswhowould teachintheschools,not onlyintheWestbutallover Australia.Thefutureofthe Junioratewasmuchmore importantthanmanypeo-tierealised,aswithitwas boundupthecontinuanceof oneofthemostsuccessful, mostwidespreadandmost self-sacrificingoftheteachingOrdersoftheArchdiocese. HisLordshipthencongra-VotedReverendMother Provincialandallthesuperiorsontheirforesight, courageandconfidencein God'sProvidenceinundertakingthatworkwhich mustnecessarilyinvolvea heavyburdenofdebt.

Replyingonbehalfofthe Sisters,FatherO'Callaghan drewmanyalaughfromhis audience,whileatthesame

Missionschool.Tardun, betterknowninformer daysasSt.Joseph'sfarm, wasthechildofBeagleBay mission,Kimberley.They hadjustcelebratedtheir ownsilverjubileeofactivity amongtheaborigines,when therector,Rev.Fr.Droste, hadtocometoPerthforan operation.Whileinthe Southhehopedtobuysome sortofafarmwhichcould beworkedtosupportthe missionandatthesametime provideaholiday-placefor theFathersandBrothersof theMission. Atthattimeveryfew knewthattherewasamissionatalltobesupported inAustralia.Mostofthe supportcamefromoverseas. Hediscussedthematter withthelateArchbishop

OnJuly4,after25yearsIn1937theRev.A.Wel- workamongthenativesof theNorth,Bro.HenryKrallman,S.C.A.,leftBeagloBay topioneerthenewplaceat Tardun.HemetHisGrace atMullewaonthepatronal FeastofOurLadyofMount Carmel,andthesameday setoutforTardun.Forthe firstfiveweekshepitchedVictoria'sCharity histentalongsidethetents oftheChristianBrothers whowerealsoopeningupa block.Waterwasfound,and thefirst"monastery,atin shed,wasbuilt:Thiswasto serveforthenexttenyears.

LaboursRecalled

Perhapsthegreatest achievementofthelate FatherT.RobinsonC.Ss.R., inamaterialsense,wasthe buildingofSt.Mary's church,Kalgoorlie.Atthe timeofitsdedicationbythe lateBishopGibney,Nov. 22,1903,itwasthemost commodiousandbestappointedchurchoutsidethe metropolis.

OnthatoccasionBishop Gibneyexpressedhisdeep appreciationbyconferring uponFatherRobinsonthe titleofCanon.CanonRobinsonsaidthattheday wastheproudestofhis life.Thehonourthathad justbeenconferredonhim bytheBishop,was,hesaid, unexpectedandundeserved. Henowsawaccomplished, lems,S.C.A.,becamerector;mainlythroughthegoodseasonsimprovedandalsowillandgenerosityofthe thepriceforwheat.Thefol-peopleofKalgoorlie,his lowingyearthebrickmoddesirefortheerectionofa nasterywasbuilt.In1944magnificentchurchin FatherAlbertlefttobegintheirmidst.Hehadfound theMissionatWanderingitapleasuretowork Brook, amongthepeopleofKalgoorlie,andtothem,and nottohimself,wasduethe creditofhavingthenew St.Mary'sbuilt.

Anewerabeganwiththe Rev.GeorgeVill,S.C.A.He managedtobuymanyof theAirForcehutsfromGeraldton,largelyduetothe greatgenerosityofthe CatholicsofVictoria.These weredismantledandreerectedatthefarmwith theideaofbeginninga schoolfornativechildren.

The concludedreligiousceremony withthe"Te Deum".Benedictionwasa fittingendingtoamemorableday.

ThereaderofSt,Bernard willfindthestyleandmatterofhissermonstobe verybeautiful,thoughat timesalittledifficult,becauseinawriterofthe 12th.centurytheremustbe turnsofexpressionthatare unfamiliartousofthe20th century.Hewillalsoappreciatethefireandpiety ofthatgreatsaint,an1 aboveall,hewilldiscover atoncehisfertilemindin theuseofBiblicalmetaphorssopleasing,sofitting ascomingfromafullheart andmind.Asinglespecimenmustsufficetoillus trateallthis-theexquisite pieceontheHolyNameof JesusfromSermonXVon theCanticleofSolomon:-

Justatthemomentthere aretworatherseriouscases ofallegedgraftbeingheadlinedinthenews.Asa resultofthereportofthe RoyalCommissioner,Mr.J. Cynicismregardingthehonestyofpoliticiansbyand largeisaltogethertoowidespreadinAustralia.Perhapsmorethananyother singlefactor,itisresponsibleforthelackofrespect towardsthepublicauthorlightonly;itisalsofood. Areyounotstrengthenedas oftenasyourememberit? Whatsofattensthemind thatthinksofit?Whatso tonesupworn-outfaculties, strengthensvirtues,invigoratesgoodanduprightmorals,nourisheschasteaffections?Everyfoodofthesoul isdryunlessitbemoistenedwiththisoil;itisinsipid ifitbenotseasonedwith thissalt.

Onerecallssomecauses celabresrelatingtohotel licences,theownershipof starting-pricebettingpremises,housingpermits,releasesforbuildingmaterials andtheconductofmental institutionsinwhichpoliticiansandpublicofficials madeanythingbutabrave showing,andwereyetwithoutthegraspofthelaw,

Itispopularly,butillogically,believedthatabad manmaybeagoodpolitician.Andinpracticethe votingofthepartyticket hasassumedgreaterimportancethanthepersonal charactersofpoliticalas-

pirants. Nobodywants muck-rakingtobecomea featureofpoliticalcampaigns,butthepublicought toconsider,initscollective conscience,whetheraman whoisnotoriouslyunfaithfultohiswifewillprovein publiclifeatrustychampionofthemarriagelaws. Amanwhohasmadealot ofquickmoneyoutofthe "jerry-building"offlats, whichwillbeslumtenementswithinadecade,cannotbeconsideredtohave thehighestqualficationsfor theportfolioofHousing. Briefly,aman'sphilosophy inhisprivatelifewillinvariablyprojectitselfinto hispublicactivities.

Onewouldnotcaretosee aprofessionalabortionist appointedtoadministermaternalandchildwelfare,or aconfidencetricksterheadingtheCrownLawdepartment.NorcouldagentlemansuchasMr.Woolcott ForbesbeconsideredanornamentintheTreasury.For allthat,nexttonocognisanceistakenofthecharacterofapoliticalcandidate. Thisisamatterthat deservesattention,because theactivitiesoftheNationalSafetyCouncilsinvolve arespectableexpenditure ofpublicmoneysandthe publicareentitledtosee somevaluefortheirmoney.

Whatseemschieflywrong withthetypeofpublicity employedinthatitisa mixtureofthehorrificand theunsound.Therecitalof thenumberskilledor maimedwillhavenomore effectonthepreyentionof accidentsthanthegrosser figuresofcasualtieshaveon thepreventionofwar.The truthisthatthehuman emotionscanonlyacceptso muchoftheinsufferable. In1944,theArchdiocese ofChicagoundertookaninvestigationwiththepurpose ofsettlinginwhichagegroupvocationsweremost commonamonggirls.Four thousandnunsanswereda questionnaire,anditwas foundthat9percentof themhaddecidedtoentera conventattheageof12;31 percentbetweentheages of13and15;44percentbetweentheagesof16and20; and18percentaftertheage of20.Betweentheages of19and20mostvocations seemtobereceived.The inquiryalsorevealedthat thebiggestsinglefearon thepartofaspirantswas thatofmakingamistake. Theabsenceofpositive guidancewasfoundtobea majorobstacletomanyvocationsinoldergirls.Secondly,Marygrovecollegein Detroit,ataboutthesame time,conductedaninquiry intotherelationsbetween familiesandvocations.It wasfoundthatparentalapprovalwasdirectlycorrelatedwithfamilysize.Of 1,700nunsinvestigated,89 percentcamefromfamilies ofoverfourchildren,and only11percent.fromfamiliesofthreeorless,

Asoneofthemputsit: "Whenapotentialcandi- dateisdeflectedintoa parochialsocietyitmight bethatthepriestwants towaitandsee;butit couldalsobethatthegirl iswillingtobedeflected, eitherbecauseshehasnot yetunderstoodthatdirect dedicationtoGodisa 'stateoflife,'orbecause sheisreadytoseizea likelysoptoherconsciencewhenshefearsa completesacrifice,and thusavoidsit."

Itwastobeaboarding schoolfornativeandcolouredchildren.Itwastobe inallthingsequaltosimilarschoolsforwhite children.ByChristmas therewere30childrenon therolls.Whenthechildren returnedfromtheirholidays, threeDominicanSistershad takenoverfromthePresentationSisters.

In1951theRev.F.Girke, S.C.A.,becamerector.The iRev.F.Kelly,S.C.A.was inchargeoftheschool,and thenumbersrosetoover 80.Thesameyearsawthe arrivalofFatherLuemmen, andfourSistersfrom SchoenstattinGermany.In Novembertheschoolwas ,recognizedasan'A'grade institutionfornativechildren.
