Alifeoffifty-fouryearsinthepriesthoodendedonThurs-'* day,August14,withthedeathoftheRev.ThomasRobinson, C.Ss.R.InGod'sdesigns,hediedinPerth,where,attheturnofthe century,hiscareerasapriestbegan.
ThomasRobinson,born '81yearsago,inBallina, Co.Mayo,Eire,wasoneof afamilyoftwelvechildren.Threeofhissisters becamenuns,ofwhomone stillsurvivesinPhiladelphia,U.S.A. Several niecesalsoarereligious intheU.S.A.,andtwo nephewspriests.
HeenteredMaynoothcollegetoprepareforthe priesthood,asastudentof hisnativediocese.Atthat timeHisGraceArchbishop MannixwasatthebeginningofhiscareerasaprofessoratMaynooth,and amongtheexpressionsof sympathyreceivedbythe RedemptoristFathers,after FatherRobinson'sdeath, wasatelegramfromthe Archbishop:"Iamdeeply grievedatthedeathofmy oldfriend."
VolunteersforPerth
ShortlybeforeFather Robinson'sordination,BishopGibneyvisitedMaynoothandappealedfor priestsforhisscatteredand rapidly-growingdioceseof Perth.Thezealforsouls, whichwasevertoremain oneifhisoutstandingcharacteristics,inspiredthe youngThomasRobinsonto volunteertoserveinthe distantandneedymission. Counselledbyhisspiritual directortodelayhisdecision,lesthebebetrayedby mereenthusiasm,hegavea weektoprudence,andthen offeredhimselftoBishop Gibney.
Ordainedshortlyafterwards,hearrivedinPerth towardstheendof1899, withpermissionfromhis ownBishop,tospendsix yearshere,onloan.Atthe endofthattime,however, consentwasgiventohisremainingasapriestofthis diocese.Andsohemight haveremainedfortherest ofhislife,hadnothisdestinybeendeterminedbya calltothereligiouslife, ChargesinDiocese FatherRobinsonwasat,tached,atfirst,totheCathedralstaff,andbeganhis priestlyapostolateatSt. Brigid's,WestPerth,where MonsignorBourke,thevicar general,wasparishpriest. Kalgoorlieremainedalwaysforhimaplaceof cherishedmemories;he neverforgotitoritspeople. Andthosewhoknewhim duringthosebygoneyears neverforgothim;theykept thememoryofadevoutand devotedpriest,full,ofapostoliczealandwithaheart opentoeverygenerousimpulse.
Someoneretainsayouthfulmemoryofthetall priest,onhisbighorse, stoopingdowntogiveasovereigntoachild.whose familywasinneed.The testimonyofhisfellowpriestsofthoseyearsisthat theGoldfieldspeopleliterallyadoredhim.
TouchingTribute
Itwasatouchingtribute tohismemorythatthedeaconandsub-deaconofhis funeralMasswerebaptised byhiminKalgoorlie,that theassistantpriestwasonce oneofhisaltarboys,and that,amongthepriestsand laypeoplepresentathisobsequies,thereweremany whooncewerehisparishioners.
Thecrowningeventofhis pastorateinKalgoorliewas thebuildingofSt.Mary's church,ofwhichthegolden jubileewascelebratedlast November.Atthededicationceremony,Bishop Gibney,inrecognitionof FatherRobinson'szealous work,conferreduponhima titleofhonour,byraising himtothedignityofCanon. Subsequentlyhewasgiven thetitleofDean,and,later still,ArchbishopClunehad himnominatedaMonsignor; buthewasrememberedbest alwaysasCanonRobinson.
JoinsRedemptorists
In1913FatherRobinson leftKalgoorlieandthe ArchdioceseofPerthandreturnedtoIrelandtoenter theRedemptoristCongrega tion.Hewasaccompaniedby anotherdiocesanpriest,the lateFatherPatrickBrennan,C.Ss.R.Professedin 1915,heremainedforsome yearsinhisnativeland,duringwhichtimehewasspiritualdirectorofthefamous men'sHolyFamilyconfraternityinLimerick.
Abouteightyearsago, onceagainaccompaniedby FatherBrennan,hereturnedtoPerthtospendhisdecliningyears.Thevirtues whichadornedhispriestly lifefromitsverybeginning were,duringhisreligious life,asourceofgreatedificationtohisconfreresfor nearlyfortyyears.Hewas neverknowntospeakan uncharitablewordnorto seekadispensationfromthe leastpointofreligiousobservance,andhewasincapableofbeingprovidedto anger.
Hiszealwasoutstanding, evenwhenhewasnolonger capable,physically,ofmuch action;anditmightnotbe toomuchtosaythathislast actofzealbroughtonthe strokewhichcausedhis death.Ontheprevious dayhehadpaidavisitto theHomeoftheLittleSistersatGlendalough,toask themtoreeciveaman96 yearsold,whowasinneed ofcareandwhohadexpressedthewishtobecome aCatholic.
Throughouthislastillness thedailythoughtofhis pooroldwanderingmind wastogetupandcelebrate MaSs.Duringtheclosing hoursofhislife,fittingly, rosariesandlitanieswere reciteduninterruptedlyby hisRedemptoristbrethren, byotherpriests,bynuns, andbyfaithfulfriends.It wasalasttributetoahumble,holyandmuchbeloved priest.TheRedemptorist communityrealisesthathis deathhasmeantthelossof itsgreatesttreasure.

HisLordshiprecalledhow longithadbeenhopedto buildachurchinthedistrict.Theventurehad beenmootedasfarbackas 1928,whenhehadbeenparishpriest.Theadventof war,however,hadcaused theprojecttobeshelved. TheBishoppaidtributeto thetremendoushelpgiven bytheItaliansandother NewAustraliansintheerectionofthechurch.Heconcludedhisaddresswitha fewwordsintheItalian tongue, Thechurchisconstructedintimberwithatiled roof.Ithasaniceporch andtwolargesacristies.The interiorislinedwithplasterboard.Itliesonthe theGreatEasternhighway, nextdoortothelocalhall.

ReportsfromViennaand Stockholmtalkofunrestin RumaniaandPolandtoo,so thatonemustexpectthat conciliatorymoveswillbe reportedfromthosecountriestoo.

TwodaysoutofMelbourne,havingkeptinsight ofthecoastallthewaywe passedWollongongand PortKembla,andeagerly watchedoutfortheligh`s ofSydney.MuchinthetraditionofCaptainCook,we passedSydneyHeadsand althoughthelightsofthe cityweremostalluring,we continuedournorthward way,finallyleavingthe coastandsailingnorth-east fromByronBay.Athousandmilesseparatedusfrom ourfirstobjective-Ocean Island.

Aswesailedthrough theCoralSeatherewasnot oneofusforwhomtheexperiencewasnotpoignant withmemoriesofthegal- lantmenandnobleshipsof AustraliaandAmericato whosebraveryandselfsacrificeofthoseMaydaysin 1942wepaidsilenttribute. Onwardswesailedpastthe Solomons,SantaAnna,San. ChristobelandSanCatalina,recallingtheintrepid voyagesoftheSpanishand Portuguesemarinerscenturiesago.
OurwelcomewasatypicalIslandone.Asthe "Trienza"anchoredoffthe treacherouscoralreef,the graveyardofmanyships,a motorlaunchcamealongsidewiththedoctor,harbour master,andotherofficials onboard.Afterourgreet- ingbytheGeneralManager, Mr.A.H.Gaze,andthe OceanIslandmanager,Mr. Adams,native"boys"deckedusoutgailyinleisof frangipanniandhibiscus, whichmadeusrealisewe reallywereabouttoland onatropicalisle. Wenegotiatedtheboardingofthelaunchwithoutmishap,andwere soonattheboatharbour, beingwarmlygreetedby thewivesofofficialsand bynativeswhohadtaken upeverypointofvantage withmanyofthemperched precariouslyonrooftops, cliff.;andtrees.Allmen, womenandchildrenlooked happyandcarefree,witn flowersintheirhairor roundtheirnecks.Cranes, engines,wheelbarrows, everything-animateorinanimate-wasdecoratedwith thescarletofhibiscusand bougainvilleaandthelovelycreamandgoldofthe frangipanni.Theairwas ladenwithperfume,andit washardtorealisethatin thistinyisle-amerespeck inthevastnessofthePacific-scenesofunparallelledbarbarityhadbeen perpetratedbytheJapanese afewshortyearsago.Despitetheterrificheat-in suchmarkedcontrasttothe winterweatherhereat home-wecrammedinto twelvehoursasmuchactivityaswenormallyaccomplishinaweek.

Pain'sPremonitions
Nowletusglanceatwhat Ishallcall"physicalevil"theevilofsuffering.Why istheresomuchpaininthe world,somuchdisease,so muchapparentlysenseless suffering?Firstletme makeapointwhichwill haveitsbearingonthesubjectofanimalsufferingalso. Painis,inonesense,akind ofnecessarycorrelativeto pleasure:Ifyouhavea nervoussystemwhichis capableofexperiencing pleasure,theninevitablyit willbesensitivealsoto pain.Howoftenwefind pleasurepassingintopain, andpainfadingintopleasureoverano-man's-land offeeling.
stoppedatgivingusawarningthatallwasnotwell,we shouldprobablyputupwith themagooddealmoreeasily.Still,theydohave thatusefulfunction,evenif theyconsiderablyexceedit.
Thereisadeeperconsideration,however,whichgoes furthertoaccountforthe mysteryofsuffering.Sufferingistheschoolinwhich mostofuslearnwhatever virtuewepossess.Itisin theteethofdifficultyand oppositionthatwemake progress.Oursufferingin factentersfarmoreintimatelyintotheformationof thenoblestelementsinour character;wearewhatwe arelargelybyourreaction topain,discomfort,distress. Thatistrueonthenatural level.
Onthesupernaturallevel wemaygomuchfurther. FortheChristian,painand sufferingaregivenameaning,obscurebutreal,bythe passionanddeathofChrist. Therethepainofthisworld findsitsconsecrationandits issue.TheChristiansuffersinmysticalunionwith Christ,andhissufferings therebyacquirearedeemingvalueandameaning, andareorientedtothatfinal happinessinwhichtheywill beswallowedup.Andthe painsevenofnon-Christians,Iwouldadd,arerelated,inamysteriousmannerthatIcannotpauseto examinehere,tothesufferingsofthatChristwhom thesemendonotknow.
HeavyDarkFringe

God'sMystery
Ihavespokenalreadyfor longerthanIintendedon thissubject,andIamconsciousthatthereismuchyet toadd.Youcanaska questionaboutevilinafew seconds,andyoucandolittlebywayofareplyinten minutes.Iwouldnowmerelyobservethatmanyofmy observations,whilehelping toreducetheproblemtoits rightdimensions,donot affectthequestionwhich onefinallyraises,andwhich wemayputthus:Granted that,inafinite,material world,andwiththebeings initconstitutedastheyare, someevil,moralandphysical,maybeconsideredinevitable,whydidGod choosetocreatethisworld, thisorderofthings,withits greatamountofevil?
