FatherRobinsonCloses ZealousPriestlyLife

Alifeoffifty-fouryearsinthepriesthoodendedonThurs-'* day,August14,withthedeathoftheRev.ThomasRobinson, C.Ss.R.InGod'sdesigns,hediedinPerth,where,attheturnofthe century,hiscareerasapriestbegan.

ThomasRobinson,born '81yearsago,inBallina, Co.Mayo,Eire,wasoneof afamilyoftwelvechildren.Threeofhissisters becamenuns,ofwhomone stillsurvivesinPhiladelphia,U.S.A. Several niecesalsoarereligious intheU.S.A.,andtwo nephewspriests.

HeenteredMaynoothcollegetoprepareforthe priesthood,asastudentof hisnativediocese.Atthat timeHisGraceArchbishop MannixwasatthebeginningofhiscareerasaprofessoratMaynooth,and amongtheexpressionsof sympathyreceivedbythe RedemptoristFathers,after FatherRobinson'sdeath, wasatelegramfromthe Archbishop:"Iamdeeply grievedatthedeathofmy oldfriend."

VolunteersforPerth

ShortlybeforeFather Robinson'sordination,BishopGibneyvisitedMaynoothandappealedfor priestsforhisscatteredand rapidly-growingdioceseof Perth.Thezealforsouls, whichwasevertoremain oneifhisoutstandingcharacteristics,inspiredthe youngThomasRobinsonto volunteertoserveinthe distantandneedymission. Counselledbyhisspiritual directortodelayhisdecision,lesthebebetrayedby mereenthusiasm,hegavea weektoprudence,andthen offeredhimselftoBishop Gibney.

Ordainedshortlyafterwards,hearrivedinPerth towardstheendof1899, withpermissionfromhis ownBishop,tospendsix yearshere,onloan.Atthe endofthattime,however, consentwasgiventohisremainingasapriestofthis diocese.Andsohemight haveremainedfortherest ofhislife,hadnothisdestinybeendeterminedbya calltothereligiouslife, ChargesinDiocese FatherRobinsonwasat,tached,atfirst,totheCathedralstaff,andbeganhis priestlyapostolateatSt. Brigid's,WestPerth,where MonsignorBourke,thevicar general,wasparishpriest. Shortlyafterwardshewas appointedtotakechargeof thenewdistrictofCottesloe, butbeforehecouldtakeup

Kalgoorlie,thecentreof theEasternGoldfields,then stillintheirearlydays, daysofvigorouslifeand increasingprosperity,was tobethesceneofhislabours,aslongasheremainedapriestoftheDioceseof Perth.

Kalgoorlieremainedalwaysforhimaplaceof cherishedmemories;he neverforgotitoritspeople. Andthosewhoknewhim duringthosebygoneyears neverforgothim;theykept thememoryofadevoutand devotedpriest,full,ofapostoliczealandwithaheart opentoeverygenerousimpulse.

Someoneretainsayouthfulmemoryofthetall priest,onhisbighorse, stoopingdowntogiveasovereigntoachild.whose familywasinneed.The testimonyofhisfellowpriestsofthoseyearsisthat theGoldfieldspeopleliterallyadoredhim.

TouchingTribute

Itwasatouchingtribute tohismemorythatthedeaconandsub-deaconofhis funeralMasswerebaptised byhiminKalgoorlie,that theassistantpriestwasonce oneofhisaltarboys,and that,amongthepriestsand laypeoplepresentathisobsequies,thereweremany whooncewerehisparishioners.

Thecrowningeventofhis pastorateinKalgoorliewas thebuildingofSt.Mary's church,ofwhichthegolden jubileewascelebratedlast November.Atthededicationceremony,Bishop Gibney,inrecognitionof FatherRobinson'szealous work,conferreduponhima titleofhonour,byraising himtothedignityofCanon. Subsequentlyhewasgiven thetitleofDean,and,later still,ArchbishopClunehad himnominatedaMonsignor; buthewasrememberedbest alwaysasCanonRobinson.

JoinsRedemptorists

In1913FatherRobinson leftKalgoorlieandthe ArchdioceseofPerthandreturnedtoIrelandtoenter theRedemptoristCongrega tion.Hewasaccompaniedby anotherdiocesanpriest,the lateFatherPatrickBrennan,C.Ss.R.Professedin 1915,heremainedforsome yearsinhisnativeland,duringwhichtimehewasspiritualdirectorofthefamous men'sHolyFamilyconfraternityinLimerick.

Abouteightyearsago, onceagainaccompaniedby FatherBrennan,hereturnedtoPerthtospendhisdecliningyears.Thevirtues whichadornedhispriestly lifefromitsverybeginning were,duringhisreligious life,asourceofgreatedificationtohisconfreresfor nearlyfortyyears.Hewas neverknowntospeakan uncharitablewordnorto seekadispensationfromthe leastpointofreligiousobservance,andhewasincapableofbeingprovidedto anger.

Hiszealwasoutstanding, evenwhenhewasnolonger capable,physically,ofmuch action;anditmightnotbe toomuchtosaythathislast actofzealbroughtonthe strokewhichcausedhis death.Ontheprevious dayhehadpaidavisitto theHomeoftheLittleSistersatGlendalough,toask themtoreeciveaman96 yearsold,whowasinneed ofcareandwhohadexpressedthewishtobecome aCatholic.

Throughouthislastillness thedailythoughtofhis pooroldwanderingmind wastogetupandcelebrate MaSs.Duringtheclosing hoursofhislife,fittingly, rosariesandlitanieswere reciteduninterruptedlyby hisRedemptoristbrethren, byotherpriests,bynuns, andbyfaithfulfriends.It wasalasttributetoahumble,holyandmuchbeloved priest.TheRedemptorist communityrealisesthathis deathhasmeantthelossof itsgreatesttreasure.

Thereisasteadyflowof memberscominginforthe sakeofthemedicalbenefits astheyrealizethatthey mustbelongtosome friendlysocietylodgeor non-profit-makingorganizationinordertoobtain thegovernmentbenefits.

AfaircrowdgatheredatBaker'sHill, onAug.15,towitnesstheblessingofthe newChurchoftheHolyFamilybytheMost Rev.L.J.Goody,AuxiliaryBishop. Becauseofthegenerosity ofthepeople,andinparticularofMr.E.M.Gumley,oftheKoojeddasawmill,thechurchwascompletedatacostofL1,100, whichisprobablylessthan halfitstruevalue. Mootedin1928

HisLordshiprecalledhow longithadbeenhopedto buildachurchinthedistrict.Theventurehad beenmootedasfarbackas 1928,whenhehadbeenparishpriest.Theadventof war,however,hadcaused theprojecttobeshelved. TheBishoppaidtributeto thetremendoushelpgiven bytheItaliansandother NewAustraliansintheerectionofthechurch.Heconcludedhisaddresswitha fewwordsintheItalian tongue, Thechurchisconstructedintimberwithatiled roof.Ithasaniceporch andtwolargesacristies.The interiorislinedwithplasterboard.Itliesonthe theGreatEasternhighway, nextdoortothelocalhall.

ThenewstatueofOur LadyofSorrows.wasbeautifullydecoratedbytheSistersofSt.Brigid's.Afull churchheardaninspiring sermonbyitsparishpriest inItalian.

TheweddingofMr.John CrisafulliandMaryFarandaistotakeplacewith NuptialMassonSaturday, Sept.5.Johnnie,asheis betterknown,isoneofthe mostpopularboysofthe district,andwillhavethe bestwishesofeverybody foraverylongandhappy marriedlife.

FatherCunningham,in congratulatingSisterGerard,saiditwasahappycoincidencethattheanniversaryofherProfessionshould occuronthegloriousfeast oftheAssumption,andthat theMassofthatdayshould beofferedamidallthe splendourwithwhichthe ritualoftheCatholicChurch sofittinglyaccompaniedher greatfeasts.

BishopParticipates

ThatHisLordship,the Bishop,shouldhonourthe occasionwithhispresence wasasignoftheimportanceofthiseventinthelife ofSisterGerard.PontificalHighMasswasthegreatestexternalexpressionof gratitudeanddevotionthe Churchcouldoffer,and was,moreover,inkeeping withtheinternaljoythat wasfeltsointenselyattimes suchasthis.

Hence,itwasfittingthat, onthatmemorableday,tl,ev joinedwithSisterGerardin thatsublimeActofEhanksgiving.

OurLord'scall,"Come,followMe,"andhadeverbeen anuntiringandenthusiasticlabourerinHisvineyard. Herkindnesstothepoorand theneedy,especiallyinthe difficultpioneeringdays, surelydrewdownGod's specialblessingonherasa trueSisterofMercy.

Thereligiousceremony concludedwithPontifical Benedictionandthesinging oftheTeDeum,

ConventofMercyinBunburyin1900,andwasprofessedin1903withtwocompanions,SistersM.Anthony andBerchmans,bothof whomhavebeencalledto theireternalreward.

garyasinPolandandelsewhere,hasprovedtobethe leastsuccessfuloftheCommunistweaponsagainstthe Churchandthefaithful.

Hismostdamagingadmission-damaging,thatis, totheCommunictcausein thedemocracies-washis statementthat:"Persons heldininternmentcamps whodidnotendangerthe Statemustbereleasedforthwithandthecampsclosed."

TheCommunistshave,of course,hithertodeniedthe veryexistenceofsuch camps."

TemporaryMeasures

ReportsfromViennaand Stockholmtalkofunrestin RumaniaandPolandtoo,so thatonemustexpectthat conciliatorymoveswillbe reportedfromthosecountriestoo.

Butitwouldbedangeroustoforgetforonemomentwhenconsideringthe policychangesnowbeing madebehindtheIronCurtainthat,intheeyesof theCommuniststhemselves, thesearebuttemporary measuresdesignedtomeet temporarydifficulties.The aim,asalways,istoensure theultimatetriumphof Communism.

Thechanges,sweeping andspectacularthoughthey appear,arenomoresothan thoseintroducedbyLenin, underthetitleof"NEP"theNewEconomicPolicy-

inRussiain1921.And therearesignsinplenty thatthepurposeisthe same,

Mr,Nagyhasadmitted "mistakes"inGovernment policyinindustry,agriculture,religionandpolice methods,andhaspromised changes.Toagreateror lesserextentthesituation throughoutEasternEurope ismuchthesame.

PeasantsRestive

Theruthlessdriveagainst thepeasantshasledto"passiveresistance"ontheir part.Theconsequentfood shortageshaveinturnled tounrestamongtheindustrialworkingclass.And theattempttoforcetoo muchCommunismupona publicnotyetreadyforit hasmadediscontentwidespread,particularlyamong thebetter-offpeasantsand "smallcapitalist"class whomtheCommunistsdetestbutcannotyetdowithout.

Thatwasbroadlythesituation,too,whenLenindid hisfamousswitch.

The"kulaks"weregoing slow,theindustrialworkingclasswasrestive,the Communistpartywastryingtoforcethepaceto Communism,andfailingto carrythepeoplewithit. Eventherecenteventsin EastBerlinwereparalleled bythemutinyofthesailors atKromstadt.

"Bythespringof1921," Leninsaidinaspeechata conferenceinOctoberof thatyear(Lenin:Selected Works.Vol.9,page286),"it becameclearthatwehad suffereddefeatinourattempttoadopttheSocialist principlesofproductionand distributionbythetacticsof "directassault,"i.e.,bythe shortest,quickestandmost directroute.Thepolitical situationinthespringof 1921revealedtousthat thesubstitutionof'siege' tacticsfordirectassault wasinevitable. ."

AnAmericanProtestant sectreceivedpermission fromItalianauthoritiesto bringfournewmissionaries intothecountry,itwasreportedhere.

Thepermissionwasreportedlyextendedtothe ChurchofChristwhich maintainssome20establishmentsinItaly.Thesecthas hadrepeateddifficulties withItalianauthorities.Last yearseveralofitschurches *ereclosedbecauseleaders ofthesecthadfailedto obtaintherequiredpermits.

Thefavourableactionby theItaliangovernmentis attributedtoeffortsofthe U.S.embassyhere.

TheChurchofChrist receivesmostofitssupport fromTexasadherents.All itscongregationsareautonomous.

Thecommentistypicalof othersintheBritishCatholicpresswhichhasnever ceasedtodenouncetheviolentanti-Catholicismofthe Titoregime.ThesecommentspointedoutthatdespiteTito'spromisesandthe adulationsoftheBritish governmentandsecular pressduringhismuchpublicizedvisittoBritain,his persecutionofreligionremainsascruelasever. WhenIwasselectedas amemberoftheFederal ParliamentaryPartytovisit NauruandOceanIsland, duringtheparliamentary recess,Ilittleimaginedthe wonderfulexperiencesthat weretobemineduringmy sixweeks'absencefrom WesternAustralia.Tome OceanIslandandNauru 4 werebutnamesdimlyrememberedashavingsomethingtodowithsuperphosphate-drearysmelly littlerockyoutpostsinthe Mid-Pacific,withperhapsa nativehutortwoandan oddAustralianhereand therebearingthe"white man'sburden"together with"maddogsandEnglishmenintheheatofthe soon-daysun."Howcompletewasmyawakening, whenafteratwelveday voyageinaphosphateship, the"Trienza",OceanIsland cameintoview.

Unfortunatelynoneof theoriginalinhabitantsof OceanIsland,theBanabans, isstillthere.AfterWorld WarII,thosenativeswho hadsurvivedtheJapanese occupation,duringwhicn morethanhalfofthem perishedwhentheirhomes andvillagesweredestroyed, hadgorietoanotherisland,Rambi,nearFiji, whichwaspurchasedfor themoutoftheirphosphate royalties.Thereis,however,alargenumberofGilbertandElliceIslanders andChineseworkingunder contractfortheBritish PhosphateCommissioners, whilethemainadministrativeworkiscarriedonby ahighlyskilledtechnicalstaffofEnglish,Australians andNewZealanders.

Theotherpassengers weremyfiveParliamentary colleagues,anofficial,Mr. Youngoftheheadofficeof theBritishPhosphateCommissioners,andayoung EnglishmenfromtheColonialoffice,whowithhis wifeandinfantsonJeremy,wasboundforTarawaintheGilbertIslands. Wewereaveryhappy companyandweresoonon excellenttermswiththe Captain,staffandcrew,and eagerlylookedforwardto ourtwelvedaysatsea,withouttheconstantjinglingof thetelephone,thepessimism ofthedailypapers,completelycutofffromanythingpertainingto"business asusual".

TwodaysoutofMelbourne,havingkeptinsight ofthecoastallthewaywe passedWollongongand PortKembla,andeagerly watchedoutfortheligh`s ofSydney.MuchinthetraditionofCaptainCook,we passedSydneyHeadsand althoughthelightsofthe cityweremostalluring,we continuedournorthward way,finallyleavingthe coastandsailingnorth-east fromByronBay.Athousandmilesseparatedusfrom ourfirstobjective-Ocean Island.

WarMemories.

Aswesailedthrough theCoralSeatherewasnot oneofusforwhomtheexperiencewasnotpoignant withmemoriesofthegal- lantmenandnobleshipsof AustraliaandAmericato whosebraveryandselfsacrificeofthoseMaydaysin 1942wepaidsilenttribute. Onwardswesailedpastthe Solomons,SantaAnna,San. ChristobelandSanCatalina,recallingtheintrepid voyagesoftheSpanishand Portuguesemarinerscenturiesago.

OurwelcomewasatypicalIslandone.Asthe "Trienza"anchoredoffthe treacherouscoralreef,the graveyardofmanyships,a motorlaunchcamealongsidewiththedoctor,harbour master,andotherofficials onboard.Afterourgreet- ingbytheGeneralManager, Mr.A.H.Gaze,andthe OceanIslandmanager,Mr. Adams,native"boys"deckedusoutgailyinleisof frangipanniandhibiscus, whichmadeusrealisewe reallywereabouttoland onatropicalisle. Wenegotiatedtheboardingofthelaunchwithoutmishap,andwere soonattheboatharbour, beingwarmlygreetedby thewivesofofficialsand bynativeswhohadtaken upeverypointofvantage withmanyofthemperched precariouslyonrooftops, cliff.;andtrees.Allmen, womenandchildrenlooked happyandcarefree,witn flowersintheirhairor roundtheirnecks.Cranes, engines,wheelbarrows, everything-animateorinanimate-wasdecoratedwith thescarletofhibiscusand bougainvilleaandthelovelycreamandgoldofthe frangipanni.Theairwas ladenwithperfume,andit washardtorealisethatin thistinyisle-amerespeck inthevastnessofthePacific-scenesofunparallelledbarbarityhadbeen perpetratedbytheJapanese afewshortyearsago.Despitetheterrificheat-in suchmarkedcontrasttothe winterweatherhereat home-wecrammedinto twelvehoursasmuchactivityaswenormallyaccomplishinaweek.

Forthetruestoryofthe PacificisnottheHollywood versionofhula-hulagirls andlazydaysandmoonlight nightsundertropicmoons, butthestoryoftheCross raisedaloftbymenand womentowhomlifehasbut onemeaning-thebringing oftheWordofGodtothe humblestofHiscreatures.

TohismemorythegratefulNauruanserecteda beautifulmemorialinthe missiongrounds,commemoratingnotonlyhisgallantdeath,buthiseven moregallantlifeofwhich morethanthirtyyearswere spentintheserviceofhis belovedNauruans.Father ClovezreturnedtoNauru withtheremnantsofhis flock,(morethanfiftypercenthavingdiedfromill-

Accordingtolatestgovernmentalstatistics,8701 petitionsfordivorce,annulmentandlegalseparationwerefiledin1952,the highestfiguresincethe post-warpeakyearof 1947,when9,915suchpetitionswerefiled.Howeve-, the7,106divorcedecrees grantedin1952representa decreaseofthreepercent against1951andoftenper centagainst1947.

In1942,whentheworld wasinthethroesofwar, theAustralianBrigidines werecalledstillfurther afieldtocarryonthewort oftheCongregation.Atthe requestofMostReverend DoctorPrendiville,ArchbishopofPerth,sevenpioneerscrossedthecontinent totakechargeofprimary andsecondaryschoolsat Subiaco,WesternAustralia. Theanswer,finally,rests withGod.Knowingthat Godisinfinite,wefullyexpectthatcertainaspectsof Cisbeingand.activitywill befoundtosurpassourpresentunderstanding.Why Hepermitsevil,andhowin theendHemakesitministertoanall-wiseandgood purpose,arejustsuchproblemsasweshouldexpect toariseatsomepointinour musingaboutGod-problemsthatinviteourenquiry,thatyieldsomewhat underpressureofourreason,andthenattheend baffleus.Whatwecando istomarshalafewconsiderations,andseecertain conclusionsconvergingtowardsapointofultimate solution.Happily,too,we areassuredthatthatsolutionexists,eventhough, underpresentconditions,we cannotproperlyattaintoit.

Itshouldbythistimebe clearthatthereisnosuch thingas"theCatholic Answer"tothisproblemasifyouhadmerelytoask it,andIhadmerelytoturn upabookandgiveyouthe reply.Thereisnoreadysnadeanswer.Iwouldsimplyaskyoutofollowme closelyasIturntheproblemoverandpointoutcertainaspectsthataremost susceptibleoftreatment.

Thefactthatthisgood Godallowsafringeofevil, asitwere,toexistround theborderofagoodcreationisimportant,certainly, and,undercertainaspects, perplexing,butitnomore destroystheexistenceof goodnessandtheconclusionswhichwebuildonthe existenceofthatgoodness, thandarknessdestroysthe lightwhichitsurroundsor withwhichitisinterspersed. Nowletusnotethatthe word"evil"hasseveral meanings.Wespeakabout crimeandsinasevil,and wespeakabouthumansufferingasevil;andwesometimesspeakaboutanimal sufferings,too,asevil.Evil issometimesmurderorinjustice;sometimesitisthe ravagesofcancerordisease;sometimesthepaidof thestrickenanimal.Obviouslywemustusesome distinctionshere.

LetuslookfirstatwhatI shallcall"moralevil"-the evilofwrongdoing.Could Godhavesocreatedman thatnoonewouldeverhave madeasinfulchoice,noone haveeverturnedhiswill

fromgoodness?Certainly

Godcouldhavedoneso,had Hewilledtocreatemanalreadyinastateoffinalhappiness,alreadyinpossession ofGodhimself.YetGod infactwilledtoputmanin astateofprobation,where hewoulddogoodfreely, andsometimeswithgreat effort.Godmusthave seenanimmensevaluein thatgoodnesswhicharises outofthefreeplayofthe humanwill-aresponsible will-facedalwayswiththe possibilntyofevil,yetchoosinggood.Forthesakeof thatgoodness,heallows mantoliveinthisdappled worldoflightandshadow, ofrightandwrong.

Itiswithinthescope ofourexperience,too,tosee thattheexistenceofmoral evilcan,initsownway,be madetoministertotheincreaseofmoralgoodness. Thevirtueofthemartyr underpersecution,theconstancyofthemuch-tempted man,whetherthetemptationbeagainstjustice,charity,orchastity;thefeirtitudeofthemanwhoresists oppression,whohelpsthe victimsofothermen's cruelty-thesearequalities thatareheightenedandaccentuatedbytheveryevil theydeny.

However,itwouldbefoolishtopretendthatwecan seethissatisfactorilyfor ourselves.Wearetooclose totheevil,tooinvolvedin itseffects,andhavetoolimitedavisionofmoralgoodness,tobeabletodomore thanguessfeeblyatthepatternwhichGoddrawsout ofourtangledhistory.

Pain'sPremonitions

Nowletusglanceatwhat Ishallcall"physicalevil"theevilofsuffering.Why istheresomuchpaininthe world,somuchdisease,so muchapparentlysenseless suffering?Firstletme makeapointwhichwill haveitsbearingonthesubjectofanimalsufferingalso. Painis,inonesense,akind ofnecessarycorrelativeto pleasure:Ifyouhavea nervoussystemwhichis capableofexperiencing pleasure,theninevitablyit willbesensitivealsoto pain.Howoftenwefind pleasurepassingintopain, andpainfadingintopleasureoverano-man's-land offeeling.

stoppedatgivingusawarningthatallwasnotwell,we shouldprobablyputupwith themagooddealmoreeasily.Still,theydohave thatusefulfunction,evenif theyconsiderablyexceedit.

Thereisadeeperconsideration,however,whichgoes furthertoaccountforthe mysteryofsuffering.Sufferingistheschoolinwhich mostofuslearnwhatever virtuewepossess.Itisin theteethofdifficultyand oppositionthatwemake progress.Oursufferingin factentersfarmoreintimatelyintotheformationof thenoblestelementsinour character;wearewhatwe arelargelybyourreaction topain,discomfort,distress. Thatistrueonthenatural level.

Onthesupernaturallevel wemaygomuchfurther. FortheChristian,painand sufferingaregivenameaning,obscurebutreal,bythe passionanddeathofChrist. Therethepainofthisworld findsitsconsecrationandits issue.TheChristiansuffersinmysticalunionwith Christ,andhissufferings therebyacquirearedeemingvalueandameaning, andareorientedtothatfinal happinessinwhichtheywill beswallowedup.Andthe painsevenofnon-Christians,Iwouldadd,arerelated,inamysteriousmannerthatIcannotpauseto examinehere,tothesufferingsofthatChristwhom thesemendonotknow.

HeavyDarkFringe

Thepracticalinevitability ofsomeanimalsufferingis, ofcourse,involvedinthat physicalconstitutionwhich isthebasisofanimal-plea- sure.Whatwedonotunderstandistheamountof crueltyandsavagewar whichseemstofollowon animalinstinct.However, wedonotknowhowmuch animalssuffer;andweare certainlymistakenwhenwe interprettheircapacityfor sufferingsintermsofour own.Moreover,whenall issaidanddone,suffering isnotthepredominantfeatureofanimallife;itisthe heavydarkfringethat gathersroundpositiveanimaljoy.

Onehadhearditallbeforeinoutline,buttohear itfromthefamiliesconcernedandintheareawhereit happenedwasastimulating experience.Itisamemory whichwillsurelyplayanot inconsideratepartinthe reconversionoftheHightoAberdeen,forexample,lands.
