TheRevolutionhadbanned priestsandreligious.The familyshelteredmanya huntedpriest.Itwasfrom onesuchthatMarcellinreceivedhisfirstHolyCommunion.Thedailyfamily Rosarynurturedandsustainedhispietyandfaith, andgavedirectionandmotivetohislife.earlydedicatedtoMary.

Marcellinwasordainedon June22,1816,andappointedcurateatasmallcountryparish,Lavalla,ahamletinthedioceseofLyons. Zealous,hesoonsawthetit,terspiritualdestitutionof hisparishioners,andmore especiallyofthechildren. TheRevolutionhadbanishedreligion,inexiling priestsandreligious.

FatherMarcellinChampagnat'szeal,withMary's *patronage,ledtwonovices todedicatetheirlivesto educateboystoloveand serveGod.Thesetwoyoung menenteredacottage,their novitiate,onJanuary2, 1817.FatherChampagnat wasnotyetsixmonthsordained.

Godsignallyblessedthe (zealousguidanceofthis apostoliccurate.ForFather ChampagnatwastheBrothers'mentorandguidein thingsspiritualaslatereducational:thesuccessofhis apostolateatteststheexcellence;ridskillofthis notableeducationalist.

Amazinglyquicklythe MaristBrothersofthe Schoolsspreadthroughout France.Yetitisnotamazing,forallwasdonefor JesusthroughMary,andall wasgiventoMaryforJesus. InFranceduringthe founder'slifethenumberof schools,especiallyinrural areas,continuedtoincrease. Actuallyin1825,buteight yearsafterthehumblebeginning(tohouse150novices),therewaslaidthe foundationstoneofthe MotherHouse,OurLadyof theHermitage,St.Chamond, thedateAugust15.

Unendinghoursdevoted totrainingtheBrothers,to supervisingthe'erectionof trainingschools,butmore worrying,theseemingly uselesshourswastedina legalbattleagainstgovernmentalauthorities,took heavytollofthefounder's health.Shortlyafterthe founder'sdeaththeteaching instituteofSt.Paul-trotsChateauxlinkedupwiththe Marist Brothers, and throughthisprovidential fraternalunionallthegovernmentproblemswere temporarilysolved.Electionswereheldtoselect asuperiorfromamongthe Brothers.Rev.Brother Franciswaselected:his causeofbeatificationhas beenintroducedandprogresses.
