Investiture

Thestolehasformerly beenwornbytheseyoung priestsacrosstheirleft shoulder;itiscrossedupon theirbreastbytheBishop withthesewords:"Receive theyokeoftheLord;for HisyokeissweetandHis burdenlight." Thechasubleisplaced overthepriests'shoulders withthesewords:"Receive thepriestlyvestment,by whichcharityissignified; forGodispowerfultoincreaseuntotheecharity andperfectionofwork."

Duringtheanointing,the Bishoppraysthatthehands ofthenewly-ordained priestswillblessandconsecrateinthenameofour LordJesusChrist.

TheBishopnowproceeds topresentthechalicecontainingwineandwater,and withalargehostuponthe paten,saying:"Receive powertooffersacrificeto GodandtocelebrateMass forthelivingandthedead. InthenameoftheLord."

TheMassisnowresumed atthelastportionofthe Gradual.AftertheOffertoryprayerhasbeenrecited,thenewly-ordained priestsoffertotheBishopa lightedcandle,symbolising theformerofferingofthe requisitesforthecelebrationofMass.

Co-Consecrotors

Forthefirsttime,the HolySacrificewillbeofferedbythenewly-ordained priests,togetherwiththe ordainingprelate.The wholeCanonoftheMass, includingtheConsecration, isrecitedaloud.

Themostsolemnmoment oftheceremony,theimpositionofhands,was heightenedwhenthe40 priestspresentplacedtheir handsontheheadsofthe ordinands.

UpontheSacramentof HolyOrdersdependsthe veryexistenceoftheother Sacraments,andsoHoly MothertheChurchhasinstitutedtheconferringof HolyOrdersduringthecelebrationoftheHolyMass, thusindicatingthecloseassociationoftheMasswith thepriesthood.

Theordainingprelateis vestedinfullpontifical vestments.Inthis,weare remindedofthefulnessof thePriesthoodwhichhas beenconferreduponthe Bishoponthedayofhis episcopalconsecration.

AsparishpriestofKatanning,hehadchargeofan areaaslargeasIrelandor Scotland.Theroadswere onlybushtracks,andhe hadtotravelbytrainand byhorseandsulkyupto40 or50milesfromtheline. TherewasnoCatholic schoolbetweenYorkand Albany.

Theathleticismofhis youthstoodFatherReidyin goodsteadforthisrugged existence.Hehadplayed footballwiththefamous Kerryteamwhichhadwon moreall-Irelandfinalsthan anyothercounty. Hisinterestinsportsurvivedintooldage.On

AtthemeetinglastMondayeveningMissJoan Dunnewasguestspeaker. Herdiscoursewasverytopicalandinteresting,andshe receivedagoodhearing. Shewasgivenaheartyvote

Forlastweek'sSymphony concertintheCapitoltheatre,theprogrammewas chosenfromworksofthree classiccomposers-Handel, HaydnandWagner-and theperformanceoftheseby theWestAustralianSymphonyorchestra,withWalterSusskindconducting, wasthoroughlyworthyof thesegreatmasters.

Commencingtheconcert withHandel'sConcerto GrossoNo.6,theorchestra gaveus,intheopening largo,playingwarmlypoeticandreverent.Theenergeticfuguewhichfollows waswonderfullyaliveand vitalinitscrisp,readyattack.Thiswastrue,too, ofthethirdandfourthallegromovements.Inthe thirdmovementthepianissimopassageswereexecutedwithremarkabledelicacy,whileinthesecond movement(musette),the playersachievedspontaneityandgraceoftimewith finerhythmicinflection.

TriumphantClimax

Thesecondhalfofthe programmewasdevotedto Wagner,andimmediately afterintervaltheorchestra playedtheovertureto"The FlyingDutchman."With fullorchestraathiscommand,Susskindcreatedan atmosphereofromantic drama.Thismoodcontinued,thoughwithmore sombrehues,withthepreludetoActIII,of"TheMastersingers,"whichwasthe firstofasuiteformingthe concludingitem.Thesolemnmoodoftheprelude wasdispelledbythegay "DanceoftheApprentices," thesefrivolitiesbeingthen interruptedbytheimpressivemusicoftheAssembly oftheMastersingers'guild. Themusicthengrowsinintensityuntilitfinally reachesatriumphantclimax.Onthepartoforchestraandconductor,the playingwasa'worthyexposition,bringingtothelisteneravividconceptionof thecomposer'sintentions.

Itseemedtomethatthe audiencewasratherlarger thanitusuallyisonFriday nights.Inanycase,the applauseacknowledged'the concerttohavebeena memorableone.-M.K.

ThisChurch,which,ata givenmoment,seemstobe soembeddedintheRoman Empire,orinFeudalEurope,tobeinseparablefrom medievalculture,orassociatedwithnineteenth-centurybourgeoissociety,is suddenlyfoundtobeindependentofthesethings,and tobestilltherewhenthey aregone.

Ishouldliketospeak aboutthestrangehostility whichthisChurchrouses, aboutthesenseofuniqueness,of"somethingdifferent",whichitalwayssuggests.Itisfeltassomething apart,somethingabout whichwe neutral:can'tremainjust arockofdivision intheworld.Whyisitthat somepeoplewouldrather seethosewhomtheylove becomeatheistsratherthan Catholics,andthatothers findinthisChurchthefulfilmentoftheirnoblestaspi- rations?Ishouldliketoassociateallthiswiththe personofChrist,andthe crisisordivisionwhichHis comingbroughtintothe world.

BeautyofHoliness

ButwhatIwouldespe-ciallysuggestisthatthose whoareseriouslyembarkedonavoyageofspiritual discoverymaybeledtothe Churchandfindinitthe guaranteesofadivineorigin,bymeansofthebeauty ofaholinesswhichthey therebehold.Pleasedodot mistakemehere.

Youwillfindplentyof Catholicswhowouldbeno greatcredittoanychurch; youwillfind,atvarious pointsintheChurch'shistory,evidenceofalltoohumancorruptionandspiritualemptiness.But,ifyou takewhatischaracteristic oftheChurch-itsspiritual teaching,itsliturgy,its sourcesofsanctification, themarkofthesupernatural uponthoseofitsmembers wholivetheirfaith;above all,ifyoucomeincontact, atwhateverremove,with theholinessofitssaints, youwillfindthatyouhave reasontostandabashedand attracted,withaweand desire,beforetheworkof God.
