PointofDebate
Variousauthorshave maintainedthatFatherHidalgowasvalidlyexcommunicatedbyFatherManuel AbadyQuepo,VicarCapitularoftheDioceseof Michoacan, becauseofthe persecutionexperiencedby otherpriestsduringthewar ofindependence, butothers contendthattheVicarCapitularactedwithoutproper authority.
"Iamverymuchinterestedinseeingthatthetruth isknown,"ArchbishopMartinezsaidinannouncingthe settingupofthecommission."Personally,Ibelieve thatFatherHidalgoinitiated ajustmovementatatime whenMexicoaspiredto independence, andthathe wastobeadmiredforhis politicalabilityandhis visionasaleader."
InitiationBanned
"However,"Archbishop Martinezadded,"whatI willneveragreetoisthat, beingaministerofGod,he shouldinitiatethemovementofindependence.This isnotpermittedbythecharacteroftheministry,which isfundamentallyoneof peace,anditwouldnever bepermittedbytheCanons oftheCatholicChurch."
FatherHidalgoraisedthe standardofrevoltagainst SpainonSeptember16, 1810.Fromthelittlecity ofDolores,wherehewas parishpriest,hemarched withanarmedgroupof Indianstothecapital.Not daringtoattackthecity, FatherHidalgoretreatedto Guadalajara.Hisforcewas routedatthebridgeofCalderon,andhehimselfwas capturedandexecutedat ChihuahuaonJuly30,1811.
