Inhisaddress,Bishop Goodysaidthatthebellsof thisCathedral.thepealing organ.andtheclear-toned choristerswereaddingtheir 'sjoyousvoicetothoseoftens ofthousandsofothersin everypartoftheBritish Empire.Withexultation theywerecelebratingthe solemncoronationofHer GraciousMajesty,Queen ElizabethII,andtheturningofanotherpageinthe sagaoftheBritishrace whichthroughsomanycenturieshadinvictoryordefeat,inhappinessorinsorrow,beensocloselyknitto theThroneandCrownof England.

Throughallthevicisitudes ofhistory,theThroneof theCommonwealthandEmpirehadendured.Ruined kingdomswerescattered sadlyoverthehistoriccontinentofEurope;theHapsburgsweregone,andthe glorythatwastheHolyRomanEmpire;sowerethe Bourbons;sowerethemost

Si CatholickingsofSpain-the heirstothesplendoursof theNewWorldandtheenvy ofalltheStatesofEurope; theHohenzollernofPrussiahadfallen,too,andthe RomanovsofHolyRussia, butthedynastyofEgbert andAthelstanandAlfred A theGreatandSt.Edward stilllived.

ThelineofNormanWilliam,ofHenrytheMartyr, ofHenryVIIIandthewily Tudors;thehousesofthe unfortunateStuartsandthe insignificantHanoverians stillruled.Butthestock ofAlfred,ofWilliam,andof Henryhadbloomedanewin recenttimesinaseriesof modernkingsandqueens whohavebeenahonourto theselves,aglorytotheir people,andanexampleof courageanddevotiontoall thenationsoftherestof theworld.

Andourowndearqueen, continuedHisLordship,the latestscionofthatancient andnoblestock,hadbeen raisedbyGodtoruleever agroupoffreeandindependentnationswhichencompassedhalftheearth. Evenwhenitsopposition toourFaithwasmostsevere,ithelpedindirectlyto producethatsturdyEnglish remnantfromwhich,as CardinalNewmansawa hundredyearsago,emergedtheSecondSpringofthe ChurchinEngland.Even sobypersecutionincenturiesmercifullylongpast,the faithofIrelandwas strengthenedandpurified asbyfire;andbythegreat emigrationswhichensued theCatholicFaithofRome wasscatteredthroughout theEnglish-speakingworld, toproduceafecundand bounteousharvestwhich wouldhaveseemedimpossiblebutahundredyears ago.

Manydecadesofjustand goodgovernmenthadfollowedinrecenttimes,until to-day,undertheinfluence anddirectionofSovereigns trulyChristian,we,almost aloneofthepeoplesofthe earth,livedinapeaceand tranquillityoforderwhich shouldbeourmostprized possession,forwhichwe shouldemployallourefforts toensurethecontinuance.

To-dayisadayofjoy,of exultation,andofdedicationbothforourQueenand forourselves.QueenElizabethhasalreadydedicatedherselftoourservice, andthismorningsheseals thatundertakinginamost solemnmanner.Notwithingthestrainandfatigueof thelongceremonial-sheis bound,andshedoes,Iam sure,accepttherulershipof so withmanydevotedpeoples prideandjoy.

Ourownjoyandhappiness,manifestedinsomany waysinrecentdays,must alsocontainacorresponding dedicationofeachoneofus. That,aswevaluethefreedomandhappinessofthe wayoflifethatisours,we doinourdailylivesallin ourpowertomaintainitand toextendit.Allthatwe haveofcivilisation,ofculture,ofthatattachmentto fairplayandofsympathy forthesufferingandthe weak(whichareclaimed, notwithoutrealjustice,to bethecharacteristicsofthe averagepersonofBritish stcck),allthisisduetothe ChristianFaithinwhichour civilisationwasbornand nurtured.

TheDeeperLoyalty

TheteachingsofChrist aretheinspirationofallour institutions,andHisCommandmentswereatthe foundationofourlaws. Manyofushavestrayedfar fromChristinrecenttimes, andthosewhohavestrayed farthesthaveshownthemselvesteachingdoctrines moreandmoresimilarto thoseagainstwhichwehave risentimeandtimeagainto defeatintherecentpast.

Ourdedicationto-day,if itistocorrespondinbeauty andsinceritywiththatof ourQueen,mustbetothe serviceofOurLordJesus Christ-byWhomallkings andqueensdoreign.If curloyaltytotheQueenis tobetrueandundisguised, itmustspringfromaneven deeperloyaltytoChristour Kingandafirmresolution

Wearejoinedinsupplicationto-dayforthewellbeingandgoodestateofa Sovereignladywhoisalso ayoungwifeandmother. Mayyourprayersforher extendtohernoblehusbandandtotheyoUngprinces,andmayBlessedMary, theVirginMotherofthe Kingofallkings,everkeep underthemantleofher protectiontheQueenofthat realmwhichwasonceso gloriouslyknownasthe DowryofMary.

Andwhenyounglove blossomsintoacouple'sdesketobecomeasone,the prieststandsbeforethemat thealtarandsealstheir unionwiththesanctityof Matrimony-apledge,on God'spart,ofthegraces theywillneedtoseara Christlikefamily.

Thenearnessofdeath doesnothamperthepriest inhistremendousjobof leadingsoulstoGod.Heis there,atthesickman'sside, anointing"withoil,inthe nameoftheLord,"lest Satan'sfinalattackaccomplishitsdismalpurpose.

Andevenafterdeath,the parishpriestiswithhis wards-in-Christ.Through theofferingofGodtoGod intheMass,thepriestpleads withtheAlmightytogrant surceaseofpurgatorialpain, sothatthesoulshetended inlifemightliveeternally inheaven.

Theology,ontheother hand,consistsinlearning aboutGodandtheprecepts oftheFaithasrevealedin theinspiredbooksofthe Bible.Withthisinmind,it iseasiertounderstandwhy a andtraining,bothspiritually intellectually,extends overaperiodofsevenyears afterheascompletedhis secondarystudies.Seven yearsmightsoundalong timebutitreallyslipsby veryquickly. Thereisroomforgames eveninaseminary,andindeedtheyareanimportant partofthedailyroutine. Godgavemanabodyas wellasasoul,andsincethe bodywillplayanimportant roleintheirpriestlylives itneedstobedevelopedand strengthenedforthetasks ofthefuture.Thatispreciselywhythereisan emphasislaidonphysical exerciseattheseminary.

PhysicalFitness

Inwhatthen,doesthis physicalexerciseconsist?In thelineofsport,gamesare manyandvaried.During thesummermonths,cricket, tennisandswimmingseem tobethemainattractions. Withtheadventofcold weather,however,bootsand guernseysareonceagain broughtoutofmothball;, andagoodhardgameof footballsoonsendsthe bloodpumpingthroughthe veins.Hockey,ofcourse, seemstobean'oldfavourite'andfindsatimeand placeinanyseason.

Then,justincasesuch gamesasthesearen'tsufficienttodevelopyoung muscles,physicaltraining-"affectionately"referredto asP.T.-isincludedinthe weeklycurriculum.Allthis bodilyexercisepaysdividendsinthelongrun.

Itkeepsseminarianshealthyandwillenablethemt...) doreallysolidworkfor ChristaslabourersinHis vineyard.

Thedutiesofdailyseminarylife,therefore,formas itwereacloselyknitpattern.Intothispatterna varietyofthreadsare woven,eachfulfillinga specificfunction,yetatthe sametimesubordinateto theproductionofoneharmoniousdesign,namely,the formationofaholy,learned andhealthyseminarian, whowill,withGod'sGrace,,becomeaholy,learnedand healthypriest.

TheFeastofCorpusChristiisachallengeto thephilosophyofourtimes.Thesocialsystemsof thegreaterpartoftheworldpreachtheonedoctrine, thatsocietyhasnoendbutatangibleeconomicone. thatnosetofvaluesisrealthatcannotbeapprehendedbythesenses.ThetheoryofCapitalismdoes notexplicitlydenytheexistenceofaspiritualorder, butitcompletelyrepudiatesitsprimacyandevenits placeinthesocialandeconomicorders.Initspracticaleffectonlife,then,Capitalismnegatestherealityofspiritualvalues.Andthisisthesocietyin whichwemustalltrytolivethefullChristianlife withoutcompromise.WeretheChurchnotadivine institutiononemightexpectittoreactfromsuch conditionsbyacompleteretirementintothespiritual lifeentailingadetachmentamountingtoadivorce fromtherealitiesofitsmaterialenvironment.But thevirtueoftheChurchstillstandsinthemiddle way.Sherecognisesequallytherealitiesofthe spiritualandofthematerialorders.Theyareinterdependentasregardsthelifeofman,whose natureisnotmerelysoulnormerelybody,butbodysoul.Thespiritualhasprimacyoverthematerial. Thereisnocategorisation,butanessentialunityand harmony.

Soinourdaywhentheproblemofthesocial orderovershadowsallelse,whenthecrueldislocationofthematerialorderisdrawingmenawayfrom thelifeoftheChurch,theChurchhasintheEucharistarealsolventoftheirdifficulties.Ofold Godwasaspirit,andtheythatadoredHimmust adoreHiminspiritandtruth.ButsincetheIncarnation,Godhaspartakenofourfrailhumanity, sothatto-daywecanwithgratitudeandthanksgivingadoreandpiartakeoftheBodyofChrist.And onlybythisindividualreceptionofChrist'sBody canmenpersevereinthecorporatesolidarityof Christ'sMysticalBody,theChurch.TheFeastof theBodyofChristisasignofcontradictiontothose whosaythattheChurchisindifferenttothematerialbeingofmankind.ForiftheIncarnationand theEucharistdonotmeanthattheWordwasmade fleshanddweltamongstus,experiencedourprecisewoes,understandsthem,andisableandwilling torelievethem,itisdifficulttoknowwhattheydo portend.ButonlythroughChristwillthissocial reconstructionbemadesoastoleavemenoncemore freeandhappy.OntheFeastofCorpusChristi, therefore,letuspraynotonlythattheSoulofChrist maysanctifyus,hutthattheBodyofChristmay saveusall,hereandhereafter.

Itiswellknownthat CardinalMoranstoutlyadvocatedtheclaimofde Quiros.Therearestill,it seems,someverycompetent studentsofAustralianhistorywhothinktheCardinal wasright;butitmustbe admittedthattheweightof opinionhasturnedagainst deQuiros'titletobethe discovererofthisSouth.ernLand.

CherishedTitle

Letitbegrantedthathe wasnot;thefactremains that,thegloriousname "AustraliadelEspiritu Santo"wasofferedtothe peopleofthiscountry,and Catholicshavebeengladto acceptitasatitleofreligiousdistinction."Southern LandoftheHolySpirit"is anamewhichappealstous, "'andhasbeenusedagain andagainbygenerationsof AustralianCatholics.Surely itisalaudableambitionto strivetomakethisvastcontinentnotonlyinnamebut inrealitytheSouthernLand oftheHolySpirit.

TheideaoftheconsecrationofAustraliatotheHoly Ghostdidnotoriginatein thebrainofsomelearned AustraliantheologianduringthemonthsofpreparationfortheEucharistic Congress.Projectsofthis kindgenerallycomefrom theHolySpiritHimself throughlowlyinstruments likeMlle.Tamisier.

Letusrememberthatthe resolutionofPopeLeoXIII. toconsecratetheworldto theSacredHeartofJesus originatedinaGoodShepherdConventinLisbon.The consecrationoftheworld, ^andofRussiainparticular, totheImmaculateHeartof MarycamefromFatima andfromthefaithfulinsistenceofLuciadosSantosin urgingthedesireofOur Ladyfirstrevealedat Fatima.

DevotionalLegacy

Yearswentby,andatcation.Consecrationofthe theEucharisticCongressofcountrytotheSpiritofall apostolatewillhelptowards thatend.

1928,severalecclesiastics, includingArchbishopCattaneoandArchbishopSheehan,becameinterestedin thematter.Apetitionwas drawnupforpresentation toPopePiusXI.,which CardinalCerretti,PapalLegateattheCongress,grac- iouslyconsentedtoputbeforetheHolyFather.The receptionwasencouraging. PiusXI.wasverypleased withtheidea,andremarked thattheinitiativeregarding theconsecrationofthis countrybelongedtothe AustralianBishops.

OpportunityAwaited

Since1928asuitableoccasionhasnotofferedfor publicconsecrationofAustraliatotheThirdPersonof theBlessedTrinity.Aconsecrationsynchronisingwith thefifteenthcentenaryof St.Patrick'smissiontoIreland(432-1932)didnot eventuate.Partlyonthe adviceofMonsignorCattaneo,thenlivinginRome, anotherattemptwasmade in1937,theoccasionbeing theFourthPlenaryCouncil. Theopportunemomenthad notyetcome;andanother opportunitydidnotarisetill theNationalEucharistic Congress.CardinalGilroy andtheAustralianBishops acceptedtheproposalat theirgeneralmeetingofthe presentyear.Timedidnot allowpreviouspublicisation,butitseemedsufficientthat theactofconsecration shouldbemadeinthe atmosphereofintensefervourwhichtheEucharistic Congresscreated. Thereasonsforsucha consecrationcouldwellfill asmallvolume.Itmaybe possibletoreducethemto afew.

MissionaryVocation

Firstly,thetitle"SouthernLandoftheHolySpirit" hasprovidentiallyfallento us.Itwasfeltthatwe shouldmakeitourownby asolemnact.

Secondly,itwastheHoly Spiritthatbegantheapos, tolateoftheCatholic Church,somuchsothat thebookoftheActsofthe ApostleshasoftenbeencalledtheGospeloftheHoly Ghost

Thesamesortofremarkableinspirationcannot,perhaps,beclaimedforthe humblesoulwhodesired andprayedandworkedfor theconsecrationofAustraliatotheHolySpiritGodaloneknowsthetruth. Butatleastthefollowing factsmayberecordedwith themeasureofanonymity whichthematterseemsto demand.

Asimple,holywoman withgreatdevotiontothe HolySpiritdiedinSydney manyyearsago.Shelefther devotionasalivingheritagetoherdaughter.It wasliterallyalegacy,for onherdeath-bedsheadjuredherdaughter-whois aReligiousstillliving-to takeupthecauseofthe HolyGhostandhaveAustraliamadetheSouthern LandoftheParaclete.

Theapostolateisalways lookingfornewPentecosts. And,now,itisnottoo muchtosaythatthesigns ofAustralia'smissionaryvocationhaveappeared.There issolidreasontohopethat thiscontinentisdestinedto playagreatroleinthe Christianfutureofcountries washedbythewatersof thePacificand,perhaps,by otherwatersaswell.

Fourthly,ifwemayindulgeourpoorvisionin readingthesignsofthepast century,wemightsaythat devotiontotheHolyGhost shoudbeacompanionto thatoftheImmaculate HeartofMary.Thelatter devotiongoesbacktoSt.

JohnEudes,butitsprogress intheChurchcanbetracedclearlyfromthebeginningofthe19thcentury, andespeciallyfromthe thirtiesofthatcentury. OurLadyofFatimapro- claimedit,andithasbeen signalisedbysuchofficial actsastheconsecrationof theworldtotheImmaculate Heartin1942andthe specialconsecrationofthe Russianpeoplestothesame ImmaculateHeartin1952.

SeeingthatGodprepared aworthydwellingforthe HolySpiritintheHeartof theBlessedVirginMary,it isnotsurprisingthatthe onedevotionprovidentially calledforanincreaseofthe other.Hereareafewrelevantfacts.

Leo'sEncyclical

In1841FrancisMary PaulLibermann,theconvertsonofaJewishRabbi, founded,amidstincredible difficulties,areligious_congregationoftheImmaculateHeart sionstoNegroes.In1848an 18thcenturyCongregation oftheHolyGhosttookunto itselfthenewly-founded CongregationofFatherLibermann,andtheresultof thefusionhasbeenthevigorousCongregationofthe FathersoftheHolyGhost. ArchbishopMcQuaid,whose splendiddiscourserecently givenatSydneyUniversity couldwellbereckonedas anactoftheapostolateof theHolySpiritinthiscountry,ishimselfamemberof

Inthelastquarterofthe 19thcenturyCardinalManningwasanapostleofdevotiontotheHolySpiritin England.Histwochief worksonthesubjectare wellknown.

Threeyearsbeforethe endofthecenturyPopeLeo XIII.issuedhismagnificent Encyclical,"Divinumillu1 munus."Itsketchesina masterlywaytheplace whichtheHolyGhostholds andshouldholdinthelife oftheChurchandofthe individualChristian.It particularlyimpressiveto notethatthisfar-seeing PontifflookedtotheHoly SpiritforthenewPentecost whichwillbringthereunion oftheschismaticChurches.

SharingWithBrazil

Fifthly,certaincountries, underGod'sprovidence,becomethespecialhomesof particulardevotions.BelgiumandstillmoreFrench Canadabecamethegreat centresofdevotiontothe HolyFamily.Itissaidthat alandplacedunderthe SouthernCross,butinthe WesternHemisphere,namely,Brazil,standsoutas ahomeofpopulardevotion totheHolySpirit.Perhaps thatgloryshouldbelong alsotoAustraliainvirtue ofthetitlewhichsh!has inherited.

Sixthly,theconsecration shouldbringagreatoutpouringofthegracesand giftsthatthefirstGiftof allbrings.ThatistheHoly SpiritHimself,who,asSt. Thomassays,'proceedsfrom theFatherandtheSon"in rationeprimidoni"-asthe FirstGift.

EucharistandCharity

Seventhly,consecrateddevotiontotheHolySpirit willincreaseandspiritualiseandfructifyourdevotiontotheBlessedSacrament:TheChurchobserves thefeastofCorpusChristi ontheThursdayafterthe octaveofPentecost,because itwasthegraceofPentecost thattaughtthedisciplesto penetratethemysteriesof theHolyEucharist.The frequentationofthisSacramentatJerusalemwasa remarkablefruitoftheParaclete,centring,wemay feelsure,intheveryCe-

Ninthly,itwouldseem thatonthebasisofanationalconsecrationtothe HolyGhostthatdeepintellectuallife,whichisacharacteristicoflivingCatholicism,shouldgrowand flourishinAustralia.A ferventCatholicpeople shouldbeathinkingpeople, forasSt.Augustinesays: "Weloveourintellectverymuch"-notproudandarid intellectualism,butthe "sapid"knowledgewhich enrichesthemindandmoves thewilltogood.

Inaword,theHolyGhost shouldteachustofollow St.Paul'sgreatcharterof Christianhumanism:"Whatsoeverthingsaretrue, whatsoeverthingsarevenerable,whatsoeverthingsare just,whatsoeverthingsare pure,whatsoeverthingsare lovely,whatsoeverthings areofgoodrepute,ifthere beanythingvirtuous,if therebeanythingpraiseworthy-thinkonthese things."

Theseapprehensionsarose frothrecentstatementsby HomeMinisterKailasNath Katjutotheeffectthatthe Indiangovernmentdisapprovedofthe'tproselytization"ofHindusbyforeign missionarieswhoshould confinetheirworktoeducational,medicalandsocial servicefields.

Answeringquestionsraisedbyasocialistmemberin theHouseofthePeople, thelowerchamberofparliament,Mr.Nehrusaid: "Nogeneralrestrictionshave beenimposedontheactivitiesofforeignmissionariesvisitingIndiaforreligiouspurposes.Therestrictionsareconfinedtosome borderareaswheremissionaryactivitiesareconsideredharmfultoIndia.All foreigners,includingmis sionaries,arerestricted there."

lowaratherdisreputable theologicalfarragoinwhich theCatholicdoctrineofthe Eucharistismistakenlyand crudelyattacked.Iam rathershockedtothinkthat thestandardoftheologyin certainquartershasfallen solowastoadmitofthe publicationofsuchworthlessrubbishabovethe namesofwell-knownpeople.Itmaybeofinterest tocertainnon-Catholics,too, toseethiskindofthingdissected,asmanyChristians whodonotownallegiance toRomehavebeenembarrassedatattacksmadeon orthodoxEucharisticdoctrineinthenameofthe churchestowhichtheybelong.

NegativeCriticismofMassiveFaith

Theattackreferredtoisa manifestopublishedbythe UnitedProtestantcouncilin the"SydneyMorningHerald"ontheoccasionofthe recentSydneyEucharistic Congress.ThatCongress was,asImentionedbefore, generallyacclaimedasthe mostmassiveandimpressivedemonstrationofreligiousfaithinAustralianhistory.Itsspectacularexternalsuccess,anditsspiritualeffectivenessintheinteriorofmen'ssouls,were innowaylessenedbythe carpingandessentiallynegativecriticismofafewdiehardProtestantsoftheold school.Indeed,suchcrit-

icismasproceededfromthis sourcewasrightfullyignored,orevenresented,bythe majorityofnon-Catholics, whosawonlytooclearly that,besidesbeinginbad taste,itseemedtorepresent thereactionsofafrustrated few,who,iftheycouldnot construct,feltobligedtodestroy.Theoutcryraised bytheseultra-Protestants wasnotinitselfimportant; itwasrecognisablythe voiceofatinyminority, andsuchasitwas,itwas answeredquiteadequately byothernon-Catholicsin letterstothe"Sydney MorningHerald."

whichitwassupported.I amalwaysinterestedwhen Iseestirringsoftheological lifeinAustralia,andwhen Isawthismanifestoofthe UnitedProtestantcouncil, publishedinthe"Sydney

MorningHerald"forApril 17,Ipounceduponitwith someeagerness.Thedisillusionmentwastotal.Ihad expectedtoseesomeevidenceoffreshandpersonal thinking,butwhatIfound wasastalerehashofold anddiscreditedarguments andsomeobviouslysecondhandquotations,thewhole decoratedwithreferences

whichcouldbeimpressive onlyforthosewhoareunacquaintedwiththeworks concerned.Insomecases thereferencesarewrong, andingeneraltheyseemto revealthefactthattheauthorsofthemanifestohave onlythesketchiestknowledgeofthewriterswhom theycite-andthatonlyin translation.

Asfortheattitudeofthe Popes,thishasbeencharacterizeddeterminationtoprotectthefaithofa Christiansocietyagainst thedestructiveinfluenceof Jewslivinginitsmidst,and (ii)byawillingnesstoprotectJewswhoappealedfor supportagainstthepersecutionsofChristians.The tractfromwhichyouseem toquote,J.C.M.,recalls,for example,Papallegislation oftheMiddleAges,whereby Jewsareprohibitedfrom havingChristianslaves.
