Thereport,printedinthe newspaperTelegrafandattributedtotheGerman PressAgency,identifiesthe districtattorney.Theincidentwasbroughttolightby theAssociationofFreeJurists,ananti-communist groupinWestBerlin.

SpeakingoftheKikuyu Christians,andofhisdeterminationtostandbythem, FatherMcGilldeclares:

"Althoughoutnumberedby manythousandstoone,they willlaydowntheirlives ratherthansuccumbtothe evilsofMauMau.IfIam killed,Iknowthatmywork willgoon,andthatIshall leavebehindafaithinthe wayofChristwhichtranscendsallevilandwhich willeventuallyprevail."

TheMauMau"putthe finger"onFatherMcGillas farbackas1951.Thepriest hadreturnedfromhisfirst holidayinIrelandonlyto discoverthatmembersof hisflockwerebeingcoercedintojoiningtheMauMau. Immediatelyhebeganto preachagainstthemovement,heedlessofthefact thathewasinvitingquick retaliation.

AttackbyHundred FatherMcGillwasonsafari,visitingtheout-stations ofhismission,whenthatattackoccurred.Onreceivingthenews.hehurried back,andsoonwasexcoriatingtheMauMauinatalk tothelargestcongregation thathadevergatheredin hismud-and-wattlechapel. FatherMcGillwasnowgoingaboutwitharevolver strappedtohiswaist.Meanwhile,hebroughtarmed "askaris"intothemission andorganisedaKikukuresistancegroup,whosechief taskwastopatrolthemissionbydayandnight.

Oneoftheunusualfeaturesofthemissionisthe all-nightprayervigilonthe eveoftheFirstSaturdayof eachmonth.Thefaithful KikuyuChristianscome fromallovertheparishto intercedewithOurLady forpeaceintheirunhappy land.Theytravelonfoot fromplacesasfarawayas 20miles,manyofthem fastinginordertoreceive HolyCommunion.During thenight,theRosaryisrecited25times.

Thereportsaysthatthe accusedman,whileheldin thejailofAue(Saxony) pendinginvestigationofthe chargesagainsthim,desiredtoseeapriest.Theprosecutor,dressedupinclericalgarb,wenttothe man'scellandheardhis "confession"inwhichhe allegedlyadmittedtohavingslainhiswife. Hereportedhisfindings tohissuperiorauthorityin thecityofChemnitz(Saxony).Thereitwasdecided, however,nottomakeuse ofthe"confession,"inorder "toavoidundesirableoffenceinchurchcircles."
