TheMoslemdailynotedthatto-dayhundredsofIndiansarepropagatingHinduisminEuropeandAmerica,wheretheyhavebeenreceivedwithopenarms. ManlyHasTurned Out1,000Priests

SYDNEY,April23.-St.Patrick'sEcclesiasticalcollege,towhichextensionswill bemadefollowingtheblessingofacornerstoneduringtheNationalEucharisticCongresshere,hasproducedalmost1,000 priestssinceitwasfoundedin1889.

Itwasfoundedbythe Irish-bornCardinalMoran, whowasArchbishopof Sydneyfrom1884to1911.It waserectedonagovernmentgrantoflandina beautifulelevatedposition overlookingononesidethe vastreachesofthePacific Oceanandontheotherthe gloriesofSydneyHarbour. Itsaimtoproduceanative clergy.Previouslymost priestsherehavebeenIrish orEnglish.

Formanyyearsthecollegehasnotonlybeenfilledbutovercrowded.However,throughacombination ofcircumstances,suchas thewar,thehousingshortage,andthescarcityof materials,itwasnotpossibletoundertakeadditions. Theextensionswillprovide threemorelecturehalls,80 separatebedroomsforstudentsandaccommodation forfourprofessors.

Thecollegeauthoritiesalreadyhadonhand£50,000 whichwascontributedtoa specialfundappealmadein 1949,theyearofthecollege'sdiamondjubilee.

St.Patrick'sCollege,popularlycalled"thecradleof theAustralianpriesthood," isoneofthebestknownecclesiasticalestablishmentsin theCommonwealth.For nearly65yearsithasplayed aconsiderablepartin mouldinganddirecting Catholicthoughtandactivities.TheoldestexistingseminaryinAustralia,itwas formorethan30yearsthe onlyonethatpreparedstudentsforthediocesan clergy.

ProminentBishop DUBLIN,Ireland,April 14(Radio,NC).-Bishop JohnDignan,ofClonfert, formanyyearsanactive workerintheIrishindependencemovement,died onApril2athisresidence atBrendan's,Loughrea, CountyGalway.Hewas72.

BornatBangor,inthe ClonfertDiocese,onJuly13, 1880,BishopDignanalso hadbeenanotededucator, temperancepromoter,and socialservicepioneer.He wasordainedinSeptember, 1903,afterhavingheaded hisclassatMaynoothcollege,Ireland'snationalseminary,wherehebecamea professor.

BishopDignanlaterwas madepresidentofSt.Joseph'scollegeinBallinasloe, CountyGalway,wherehis qualitieswerereflectedby themanydistinctionswon byhisstudents.Owingto thestateofhishealth,BishopDignanhadtoretire temporarilyfromeducationalwork,buthereturned tohispostatthecollege afteraperiodofparochial work.

In1918,BishopDignan becameparishpriestofAbbeyandDuniry,andmeanwhilewasanactiveworker inthenationalcause.He wasacentralfigureinthe organisationoflocalSinn Feincourts,setupbyRepublicanleadersindefiance oftheBritishauthorities. InJune,1924,the44year-oldparishpriestwas madeBishopofClonfert,a diocesewhichtakesinparts ofCountiesGalway,RoscommonandOffaly.BishopDignan'sepiscopalcareerwasdistinguishedby hismanynotablesermons, andbyhisorganisational ability,especiallyinthe temperancecause.

BishopDignanwaschairmanforseveralyearsofthe NationalHealthInsurance society.Inthiscapacity, hepublishedaso-called BeveridgePlanforIreland, whichwonwideacclaim. Althoughnotacceptedby thegovernment,manyofits featureshavebeenembodiedinrecentsocialwelfarelegislation.

Hefurtheroutlineda programmethatwillgive freeeducationtochildren of800to1,000familiesin thepoorerManilaareas andincludevocational trainingcoursesandguidanceforadultsaswell asstudents.Supplementing thisprogrammewillbe thedistributionoffood, clothingandmedicineto thepoor.

Thepressingproblemof thetime,hesaid,wasthe eliminationofCommunism throughthealleviationof povertystrickenpeoplein theslums,especiallyin Manila.

ThisnewshasjustreachedpriestsoftheParisForeignMissionsocietyhere fromtheFrenchEmbassy inTokyo.TheFrenchauthoritiesreceivedtheinformationfromtheSovietgovernment,whichsaiditgot itfromtheNorthKorean government.

Apparentlytheydiedduringorimmediatelyafter whathasbeendescribedas a150-mile"deathmarch" ofcivilianprisonersand capturedAmericantroops whichstartedfromManpojinonOctober31,1950.

Trainiii'forPriesthood IsBusiness-LikeAffair

St.Charlesseminaryhasbeenpressing forextensionsforalongtime,andatlast theyareunderway.Thefirstbrickwas laidonFebruary25.

Thebrickworkofone storeyofthenewtwo-storey uildingisnowcompleted, madalsotheextensiontothe refectory.Thestudents hadtoshiftoutoftherefectoryforafewweeksto enabletheworkmentofinish.Theyhadthenovel experienceofdiningina marquee,whichtheyerectedonthelawn.

Someofthe16olivetrees andsectionsofbrickwall hadtobebulldozedtoprovidethegroundforthenew building.Thisbuildingis tocontainthechapel,students'rooms,andwashrooms,andwillhousethe philosophersandvice-rector.

Itwillbejoinedwiththe presentschoolbuildingby meansofanarch,under whichwillpasstheseminary'snewdrive,whichis soontobeconstructed.

Thewholestructureshould becompletedin14or15 months'time.

Thepositionofthebuild-

inghascausedanalterationtothearrangementof theplayingfield,withfootballgoalpostsplacedonthe diagonalcornersoftheerst-' whilerectangularfield.The newfieldwhichisbeenlaid out,isnotyetreadyfor use,butitishopedtohave itcompletedatthesame asthenewbuilding.

Thepresenttemporary chapelistoosmalltohold the39students,fivepriests, andfiveSistersatthecommunityceremonies,suchas BenedictionandSunday Vespers.Thesanctuaryalso isalittletoosmallfora convenientperformanceof ceremonies,suchasSolemn HighMassandVespers.

Refugeesareapttoexaggerate.SoStefankepttellinghimselfuntilanother friend,a journalistin London,senthimthetext ofthelaw,whichhehad copiedfromtheBulgarian StateGazette.Oneofthe articles,72-aread: "ABulgariancitizenwho
