HisGracetheArchbishopalsoreleased newsthataregionalschoolforboysistobe builtatSubiaco.Aboys'schoolisalsoto beerectedatBunbury.Bothbuildingswill bereadyforoccupationearlyin1954.

TheschoolatSubiacowill servetheparishesofSubiaco,ShentonPark,andFloreatPark.Theplans,which havebeencompleted,provideforatwo-storeybuildingcomprisingfiveclassroomsandascienceroom, receptionandBrothers' rooms.Itwillbebuilton theblockatthecornerof StationstreetandSalvado road.

SYDNEY,April23.-St.Patrick'sEcclesiasticalcollege,towhichextensionswill bemadefollowingtheblessingofacornerstoneduringtheNationalEucharisticCongresshere,hasproducedalmost1,000 priestssinceitwasfoundedin1889.

Itwasfoundedbythe Irish-bornCardinalMoran, whowasArchbishopof Sydneyfrom1884to1911.It waserectedonagovernmentgrantoflandina beautifulelevatedposition overlookingononesidethe vastreachesofthePacific Oceanandontheotherthe gloriesofSydneyHarbour. Itsaimtoproduceanative clergy.Previouslymost priestsherehavebeenIrish orEnglish.

Formanyyearsthecollegehasnotonlybeenfilledbutovercrowded.However,throughacombination ofcircumstances,suchas thewar,thehousingshortage,andthescarcityof materials,itwasnotpossibletoundertakeadditions. Theextensionswillprovide threemorelecturehalls,80 separatebedroomsforstudentsandaccommodation forfourprofessors.

BornatBangor,inthe ClonfertDiocese,onJuly13, 1880,BishopDignanalso hadbeenanotededucator, temperancepromoter,and socialservicepioneer.He wasordainedinSeptember, 1903,afterhavingheaded hisclassatMaynoothcollege,Ireland'snationalseminary,wherehebecamea professor.

BishopDignanlaterwas madepresidentofSt.Joseph'scollegeinBallinasloe, CountyGalway,wherehis qualitieswerereflectedby themanydistinctionswon byhisstudents.Owingto thestateofhishealth,BishopDignanhadtoretire temporarilyfromeducationalwork,buthereturned tohispostatthecollege afteraperiodofparochial work.

Trainiii'forPriesthood IsBusiness-LikeAffair

St.Charlesseminaryhasbeenpressing forextensionsforalongtime,andatlast theyareunderway.Thefirstbrickwas laidonFebruary25.

Thebrickworkofone storeyofthenewtwo-storey uildingisnowcompleted, madalsotheextensiontothe refectory.Thestudents hadtoshiftoutoftherefectoryforafewweeksto enabletheworkmentofinish.Theyhadthenovel experienceofdiningina marquee,whichtheyerectedonthelawn.

Someofthe16olivetrees andsectionsofbrickwall hadtobebulldozedtoprovidethegroundforthenew building.Thisbuildingis tocontainthechapel,students'rooms,andwashrooms,andwillhousethe philosophersandvice-rector.

Itwillbejoinedwiththe presentschoolbuildingby meansofanarch,under whichwillpasstheseminary'snewdrive,whichis soontobeconstructed.

Thewholestructureshould becompletedin14or15 months'time.

Thepositionofthebuild-

inghascausedanalterationtothearrangementof theplayingfield,withfootballgoalpostsplacedonthe diagonalcornersoftheerst-' whilerectangularfield.The newfieldwhichisbeenlaid out,isnotyetreadyfor use,butitishopedtohave itcompletedatthesame asthenewbuilding.

Thepresenttemporary chapelistoosmalltohold the39students,fivepriests, andfiveSistersatthecommunityceremonies,suchas BenedictionandSunday Vespers.Thesanctuaryalso isalittletoosmallfora convenientperformanceof ceremonies,suchasSolemn HighMassandVespers.

Thenewchapelwillbe largeenoughtoovercome thesedifficulties.Eventually,butnotforsometime, itishopedthataseparate chapelwillbedesignedand builtfortheseminary.The presentnewchapelwill thenbecomeaclassroom.K.P.Smith.

ItisinhisdailyMassand Communionthatthestudentoffershimselfandhis daytoGodandreceivesin returnthegraceshewill needthroughouttheday andintheworkofhissanctification.

Atimeissetasideeach dayforavisittotheBlessedSacrament,whichthe studentsmaketogether. However,therearemany spareminutesthroughout thedaywhenthestudent canslipintothechat)eland spendafewmomentswith OurLord.

Twiceaday,beforedinnerandagainbeforetea,all gatherinthechapelforan "exercise"knownasthe "particularexamen,"whereinthestudentexamineshis

conscience,considershis predominantfault,andseeks thebestmeanstoremedy it.Aftermealsabrief periodisspentinchapel andalsosometimeisspent inspiritualreading.

Aprayerverydearto seminariansistheRosary. Thisissaidtogethereach eveningbeforetea.On Saturdaysanddailyduring themonthofMay,itisfollowedbythelitanyofOur Lady,chantedbythestudents.MaryistheMother ofthepriest;sheisalsothe motheroftheseminarian, andwhatbetterwayisthere ofdoinghonourandof beggingherintercessionand protectionthanthroughher Rosary?

Nightprayersaresaidin common,afterwhichisimposedthe"greatsilence." Studentsobservestrictsilencefromtheirnightprayersuntilafterbreakfast,so thattheymaythebetter preparefortheirmorning MassandHolyCommunion.

OnSundaysthestudents attendasecondMass,a MissaCantata,whichthey themselvessing.EachSundayafternoontheytake partintheDivineOfficeby chantingVespers.

SweeteningtheYoke

ThefourthSundayof eachmonthissetasideas adayofrecollection,during whichafewhoursarespnet inthecompanyofOurLord withaminimumofdistractions.Atthebeginningof thesecondtermtheannual Retreatisheld,towhich threedaysaredevoted.

Withouthisspiritualexercises,theseminarian's daywouldnotbeattractive.
