AlmightyGodhosblessedabundantlytheworkofthePontificalMissionAidsocietiesinAustraliaduringtheyear1952.From ApriltoDecemberwasaperiodoffinancialandeconomicuncertainty;creditwasrestricted,theliberalcirculationofmoneywas tightgned,andtherewasunemployment.Inthesecircumstancestohavemaintainedrevenuewouldhavebeensatisfactory,but theNationalofficereportsagainof£18,011overthegrosstotal of1951.ThisresultcanbeexplainedonlybythehelpofGod. AfterafternoonteaDr. Sullivansummedupthe conference.

Hesaidthat,themoral problemswhicharosein socialbehaviourwere mainlythelackofcharity, andthedangertochastity andtemperance.Hethen discussedfindingsunderthe headingofthefiveD's. DANCING.

Underdancinghesaid thatheagreedwiththe findingonwhypeoplewent todances,thatis,mainly forsocialreasons.However,thereweremoralproblemstobeencountered. Therecouldbealackof charityshown.Boysrefusingtodanceandleaving girlssitting-outwasan example.Healsonotedthe applausethatgreetedthe reportoncliquishness.That wasanotherexample.

"Jiving,"hesaid,wasfound tobeallrightinmoderation.Cheek-to-cheekdancing,beingasensualtypeof dancing,wasdangerous.He washappytosayhowever thathehadn'tnoticemuch attheMovementdances.

"DATING."

"Dating,"hesaid,wasan importantaspectbecauseit wassonatural.Themajorityfoundthat18-19years wastheearliestagetostart "dating."Doctorsaid,however,thatthatfiguremustvaryaccordingtothepartiesinvolved.Healsosaid thattheadviceofallpru- dentpeoplewastogoround ingroups.Itwasnotreally agoodthingtokeepcompanyregularlyduetothe moraldangerpresent.

Twiceweeklywasthepopularfigurewithregardto frequencyof"dating,"Doctorsaid,andastandard couldbetheregularitywith whichengagedcouplesmeet. Thatwasusuallytwoor threetimesaweekandhe saidthatitshouldberestrictedtothat.

KISSING.

Withregardtokissing goodnighthesaidthatmoderationwashighlynecessary.Kissingwasasignof veryspecialfriendship.If therewasthatsortofsalutation,hesaid,letitbe onlyasalutation.Inreply toaquestiononpassionate kissingDoctorsaidthatthe Church'srulinghaddefinitelybeenlaiddown.He saidthatitwasnotlicitto anyoneexcepttomanand wife.Notevenengaged couplescoulduseitlawfully.

Theconclusionsondecorumwerequitecorrect. Regardingdress,hesaid. theywerelivinginavulgar age.Itwasprobablyno worsethaninformertimes exceptthatadvertisinghad becomevulgar.Doctorsaid thatthecoarseexploitation ofthefemaleformwas boundtohavesomeeffect oneverybody.

Thebigmoralproblem withdresswasthetemptationputbeforeotherpeople. Reportsindicatedthatthere wasalotofthat. Hewasnotattemptingto setanorm,Doctorsaid,as towhatconstitutedimmodestdressbutinfilmsand advertisementsonedidsee manyimmodestdresses.It wasabadexamplebut decentgirlsknewwhere thedifficultieslay.

DRINK. Goingontodiscussdrink, Doctorsaidthatdrinkwas popularlysupposedtobea stimulant.Actuallyitslowed peopledown.Itreleased inhibitionsandthedrinker wasinclinedtodothings notnormallydone.From reportsagraveproblemexistedespeciallywith under-agedrinkingatparties.Hesaidthatitwas highlydesirablethatyoung peopleshouldnotdrinkat partiesandcertainlynotat dances.

CONFIRMATIONPLEDGE

Theyshouldremember theirConfirmationpledge. Hethoughtthatmanypeople tookitautomaticallybutit wasasolemnpromise.

Finallyhesaidthat everyonehaddonetheConferencewell.Itwasnoteasy togetdowntoconcrete discussioneveninsuch commonmatters.Hethought thatallcouldseeapattern forbehaviour.Noonecould domorethanlaydowngeneralprinciples.Itwasup totheindividual.

ThegrosstotalofMission Aidfundswasincreased during1952.Themain sourceofadditionalrevenue wastheincreasedmembershipoftheSocietyforthe PropagationoftheFaith. Thisisfullyinaccordwith themindoftheHoly Father;he,likehispredecessor,regardsitasthe principalsourceofMission aid,theremainingsocieties being,asitwere,ancillary toit.

ThesecondmostsuccessfulsourceofMissionaid wasthecollectionsonMissionSunday.Inthemind oftheHolyFatheritisthe dutyofCatholicstobecome membersoftheSocietyfor thePropagationofthe Faith,whileMissionSundayisaspecialappealto theircharity.MissionSunday,therefore,hasaseparpealtothecampaignsfor ateidentity,scopeandapmembersoftheSocietyfor thePropagationoftheFaith conductedintheparishesby theDiocesandirector.

Theywereassembled there,saidFatherKeohane, notinaspiritofboastfulness,buttoreturnthanksto Godforthegracesandblessingsbestowedonthe parishsinceitsinception100 yearsago.Ahundredyears, saidSacredScripture,was butadayinGod'ssight. Thatwasobviouslytrueof thetimelessnessofGod,yet inthehistoryofaparish,in thisyoungandvirilecountry,itwasalongtime indeed.

OriginofParishes

Everyparish,though smallperhaps,wasanimportantunitintheChurch ofGod,eachcontributing itssharetotheheritageof Catholicismandthespiritualwelfareoftheparishoners.Parishesgrewupand developedwiththeChurch fromitsearliestdays.

Thesepriestswereentrustedwiththecareofsoulsin districtscalledparishes, subjectofcoursetothe bishop.Astheparishesincreasedinnumber,theywere againgroupedintodioceses, withbishops,priestsand peopleworkingtogetherin unionandharmonyunder theonehead,thePope,Christ'svicaronearth. Everyparish,wasasit were,alivingcellandwhen groupedtogetherformed onebodywhichwecalled thechurch.Toodyaywas noexception. CardinalMoran,theCatholichistorian,inhiswork, "TheChurchInAustralasia" mentionsthatintheyear 1851threesmalloratories atBunburyandToodyay completedthelistofpa- rochialchurchesihthediocese.Notuntil1853,however,wasaparishcanonicallyerectedatToodyay. Thatdaytheycommemoratedthatevent.

NurseryofBishops

Fourgenerationscontinuedthepreacher,had passedandgoneInthat hundredyears;fourpastors whoservedintheparish wereelevatedtotheEpis-copacy-probablyarecord foranAustralianparish. TheintrepidBishopSalvado,thesaintlyBishop Griver,bothoftheOrderof SaintBenedict,thetireless BishopKellyofGeraldton andrecentlyHisLordship BishopGoody,allhadthe careofsoulsforseveral yearsinToodyay.

LionoftheCatholicChurch thisStateandthroughout Australiaisdueinnosmall Measuretothesupportand loyaltyofourCatholic people."saidFatherKtoh%enthatparish'Pas establishedtherewerescarcelythreeparishesand schoolsinthediocese.Now therearejuston80parishes,115churches,130schools, colleges,hospitalsandinstitutions.Fromthehuman pointofviewitwasremarkableandsurprisingthatthe Churchshouldhaveflourishedasitdid,fortheenvironmentinwhichitbegan wasmorehostilethan friendlytotheCatholic faith.

Catholicswerepoorand I. scatteredandthrougha denialofcivilrightshadto buildupanextensiveeducationalsystem.Theindustry,thecourageofthe bishopsandpriests,the loyalsupportanddeterminationoftheCatholic peoplenevertosurrender theirrightsovertheChristaineducationoftheir childrenwassomethingof whichtheycouldbejustly proud.

ShortlyafterOurDivine Lordascendedintoheaven thedisciplesgatheredtogetherincouncilanddecidedthattheapostlesshould goforthasChristhadcommandedandestablishthe Churchinvariouslands.

Eachapostle,asbishop andfather,gavetohis peoplethebreadofheaven andthewordofGod.In returnthepeoplegaveto theirbishopearthlybread andthematerialmeansof carryingonhisapostolate.

morningInthesanctuarythat wasthesuccessorto BishopBrady,HisGrace ArchbishopPrendiville.His Gracehasachievedwhat BishopBradycouldnever havevisualized,namelyto haveachurchandschool whereveragroupofCatholicshavesettled.Themushroomgrowthofchurches, schoolsandinstitutions wouldbeanenduringmonumenttohisGrace'sadministration. PresenttoowasV.Rev.Dr. Collinswhocateredforthe spiritualinterestsofyoung andoldduringthemany yearsIleworkedthere. Manyotherswhoserved thereweregonetotheir reward.Suchpriestswere giftsofGod,eachalinkin buildingupthatfidelityso characteristicofpriestsand people.

HisGracetheArchbishop inabriefaddressatthe conclusionofMass,offered hiscongratulations.Heremindedthepeopleofthe richheritagehandeddown tothembythepioneers,and exhortedthemtodotheir partintransmiltingthat heritagetofuturegenerations.HethankedFr. O'Kanewhohadorganized thecentenarycelebrationso efficiently.Andhepaida specialtributetotheSisters ofMercytowhomToodyay owedsoMuch. Theywereassembled there,saidFatherKeohane, notinaspiritofboastfulness,buttoreturnthanksto Godforthegracesandblessingsbestowedonthe parishsinceitsinception100 yearsago.Ahundredyears, saidSacredScripture,was butadayinGod'ssight. Thatwasobviouslytrueof thetimelessnessofGod,yet inthehistoryofaparish,in thisyoungandvirilecountry,itwasalongtime indeed.

OriginofParishes

Thesepriestswereentrustedwiththecareofsoulsin districtscalledparishes, subjectofcoursetothe bishop.Astheparishesincreasedinnumber,theywere againgroupedintodioceses, withbishops,priestsand peopleworkingtogetherin unionandharmonyunder theonehead,thePope, Christ'svicaronearth. Everyparish,wasasit were,alivingcellandwhen groupedtogetherformed onebodywhichwecalled thechurch.Toodyaywas noexception.

CardinalMoran,theCatholichistorian,inhiswork, "TheChurchinAustralasia" mentionsthatintheyear 1851threesmalloratories atBunburyandToodyay completedthelistofpa- rochialchurchesinthediocese.Notuntil1853,however,wasaparishcanonicallyerectedatToodyay. Thatdaytheycommemoratedthatevent.

NurseryofBishops

Whenthatparishwas establishedtherewerescarcelythreeparishesand schoolsinthediocese.Now therearejuston80parishes,115churches,130schools, colleges,hospitalsandinstitutions.Fromthehuman pointofviewitwasremarkableandsurprisingthatthek Churchshouldhaveflourishedasitdid,fortheenvironmentinwhichitbegan wasmorehostilethan friendlytotheCatholic faith.

ConfidenceinFuture Catholicswerepoorand scatteredandthrougha denialofcivilrightshadto buildupanextensiveeducationalsystem.Theindustry,thecourageofthe bishopsandpriests,the loyalsupportanddeterminationoftheCatholic peoplenevertosurrender theirrightsovertheChristaineducationoftheir childrenwassomethingof whichtheycouldbejustly proud.

Everyparish,though smallperhaps,wasanimportantunitintheChurch ofGod,eachcontributing itssharetotheheritageof Catholicismandthespiritualwelfareoftheparishoners.Parishesgrewupand developedwiththeChurch fromitsearliestdays. ShortlyafterOurDivine Lordascendedintoheaven thedisciplesgatheredtogetherincouncilanddecidedthattheapostlesshould goforthasChristhadcommandedandestablishthe Churchinvariouslands.

Eachapostle,asbishop andfather,gavetohis peoplethebreadofheaven andthewordofGod.In returnthepeoplegaveto theirbishopearthlybread andthematerialmeansof carryingonhisapostolate.

Inthesanctuarythatmorningwasthesuccessorto BishopBrady,HisGrace ArchbishopPrendiville.His Gracehasachievedwhat BishopBradycouldnever havevisualized,namelyto haveachurchandschool whereveragroupofCatholicshavesettled.Themushroomgrowthofchurches, schoolsandinstitutions wouldbeanenduringmonumenttohisGrace'sadministration.
